Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 26 November 2021

Kelly is sleeping rough on the Streets and has told Stu to get lost so it is no surprise when a passing drug dealer offers her something to make life easier.  She turns him down and later he is chased off by the returning Jacob (you remember Jacob [above] - he dragged little Simon into drug dealing and whom later Harvey Wallbanger wall-banged into hospital when he worked out that Jacob was ripping off the drugs he was supplying).  Jacob, some nine months, later appears to have fully recovered and warns Kelly off the first dealer who is delivering "spice" [Spice was banned in 2016].  Stu then turns up and Jacob departs leaving Kelly some tea.  She phones (how has her phone got any charge?) the first dealer and given by her wobbliness later has had the free sample as offered by the dealer.

Roy's departure is mentioned briefly and Nina has added more vegan options to the menu - I have mentioned recently that Roy's Rolls set is looking particularly worn so can I hope for a makeover - "Nina's Noodles" perhaps?  In the meantime I think someone needs to look at Roy's pricing as I am not convinced that Nina can make any money at the prices quoted on the boards.

Elsewhere Grace Vickers (remember her - Michael's ex and mother to Glory) is constantly arranging for the Bailey family to provide childcare - as Aggie alleges so that she can down expensive cocktails in a variety of City Centre bars.  Grace responds that she would not need to get some relief from childcare if the sofa in her free house was comfortable!  After some discussion Aggie agrees to fund a new sofa.  Much later Grace is enjoying a drink in the Rovers as Michael is looking after his daughter.   When she hears that Bernie wants to make Gemma's front room look better. Grace (above) makes it clear that for the right price she will soon be able to sell a new sofa.

"Influencers" are not people who have had the flu jab.  They are people who understand these ever newer methods of communication whereby you post a few pictures looking great and everyone rushes out to look the same.  Daisy is getting an online following.  Apparently she is posting pictures of her and Bertie and not making anything clear in the captions; so firstly she is appearing to be single, then she is appearing to be a parent - which of course makes her a single parent and of course everyone is amazed at how impressive she and the cute baby look.  So an "upmarket" baby clothes family sends over the latest collection in the expectation that she will dress up Bertie and undertake some of her impressive photo skills to give the brand a boost.  Which might be well and good if she had bothered to tell her "on" (but not public) boyfriend Daniel about it.  Which she does eventually and so he storms off and they are "off".  When he gets back to the flat they have a good old argument (and as my good lady wife pointed out she remembers Ken saying some very similar things to one Denise Osbourne) - before inevitably the passions are aroused and judging by the above they are back "on" (but not in public).

We are served a brief reminder that it is a year since Oliver left us and Steve, Leanne (above with most of the contents of Preston's Petals) and Nick are doing shift duties at the cemetery today.  This lead Abi to be one of the Sam sitters as she looks after the lad with Jack for a while.

Zeedan is still laundering cash (George and Eileen's meal - the former calls the latter "Eyelash") for his "former" father-in-law who is harassing Zeedan down the phone every chance he gets.  But he cannot take the daal van to a craft fair so needs to use the Speed Daal till; to minimise watching eyes he sends Yasmeen, Alya and Ryan for a spa day but Ryan returns and almost catches Zeedan in the money spin cycle (above) but Zeedan just about gets away with it - suspicions have been aroused I suspect.  Especially when he sees Hashim harassing Zeedan in Vicky Gardens.

Kevin feels that he and Abi need to break the constant cycle of talking and thinking about guns, Harvey, Seb, Kelly, Corey, Nina, Asha, Sam and Natasha.  Abi unwisely tries to get Sam talking by playing a game with him and Jack (who is about a foot taller than Abi these days).  When this fails to get Sam talking she eventually accepts the need to get away - as Kev puts it so romantically above and which they manage without quite crossing the rehabilitation of Kelly!

Ah yes.  Kelly.  Stu popped round to Nina's Noodles and tries to get Nina to rethink her position but Asha chases him off.  In these episodes Stu seems to have forgotten to cough - but we all know that he is not well don't we?  Kelly is staggering around and finds a mixed group of teenagers drinking and asks them for money.  One of them offers her money if she debases herself by begging (and by implication, worse).  Nina having rethought is walking along the same area and she can see Kelly being shouted at by the teen group as one of them pours a can of beer over Kelly.  We get flashbacks for Nina (in panic mode) of the night she and Seb were the object of pointless shouting and the violence which followed.  Eventually Nina (after calling the police she alleges) finds her voice and tells them to leave Kelly alone (above).  She gets her own abuse (back to the graveyard and similar) but she finds the strength to stand her ground and the group back off as police sirens sound and they walk away leaving Kelly having to find words to say just how sorry and thankful she is.  Nina admits that she has had time to think and with a wave of the wand Kelly is spirited to Alahan House and takes up the residence offered several weeks ago.

More seriously Nina was close to a panic attack earlier.  Tonight alone in Roy's Rolls she is expecting Asha who is late and is clearly exhibiting further symptoms of panic and all we can ask "is she about to feel further long term effects from the past few months?"

Tonight was written by Susan Oudot and directed by Clive Arnold.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 27 August 2021

Good evening.  Jenny Bradley sorry Connor reminds us all that she is still married and despite Daisy's interfering ways has knocked back Ronnie who decides that there is plenty more fish in the sea.  Alongside a load of pollock he gets Debbie to join him a couple of bottles of Malbec after Jenny has made it clear they are just friends (and Ronnie even turns down a full English).  Johnny rocks up and whilst both he and Jenny say they love each other he tells her that she must move on and be happy as their time together is over.  Jenny puts on her best face and goes into the bar to woo Ronnie - to find him and Debbie sharing that Malbec.  A little later Johnny comes in and threatens Ronnie with a battering if he chases Jenny - and then admits he is joking and that he wants his wife to be happy and insist he will be keeping an eye on Ronnie to make sure he treats her right.  So will Ronnie and Jenny get together?  Above Jenny is watching Ronnie depart - he has just hinted that perhaps Johnny still loves her and Jenny points out that he is "seeing" Debbie!

The deepest, darkest cess pit of the Shuttleworth empire contains not only the individual known as Todd Grimshaw but also the mortal remains of one Pat Phelan, late of this parish and step-father to said Todd who uncovers the above receptacle.  Reportedly Nicola did not respond to George's letter about disposal and George has not yet found the right time to raise the subject with Eileen.  Anyone thought to ask Gary about Zack and his mother?  No thought not.  Anyway Todd has the screaming ab dabs and pretends (as Eileen is present) that he is scared of a very very large spider.  Todd is not having a good day as it started with a telling off from Bernie in the Street.  George prevents Pat being flushed away - but Todd wants there to be no remains!

I don't think that I have ever really liked Grace and now the single mother with a criminal record adds blackmail to the charge sheet.  Once again she heading to Hull as she has been dumped by Michael but Ed and Aggie have made it clear that they do not want to lose touch with grand daughter Glory.  Apparently unbeknownst to us Ed has been doing up another house a couple of streets away and the family currently have two mortgages.  Once the done-up house was sold the profits would enable the Bailey family to dig themselves out of the money pit they had dug before they joined the Street.  Grace decides that if she has the house then she can stick around the area and Michael can co-parent.  Without telling Michael, Ed and Aggie agree that Grace can occupy the house rent free so she does not go to Hull.  Meanwhile Ed is tendering for numerous jobs - but not having much luck so Aggie is going to have to do double shifts to keep the family from going under.

The main story concerns the impending court case over the killing of Seb Franklin and Imran is feeling under extreme pressure because ex-wife Sabeen is defending Corey Brent whilst he is defending Kelly Neelan.  Laura Neelan turns up - having just been convicted of child neglect - to demand that she takes the stand to tell the court that Kelly is a good girl, but Imran points out that is the sort of help he can do without.  Imran also has to tell Toyah that he has volunteered her to sit with Kelly during the case in the well of the court.  Toyah is very worried because the rest of the Street are supporting Abi and she feels the neighbours will be rather unfriendly if she does it.  But she accedes to the request.  Much of the episode is then taken up with setting up the hearing for next week (above).

First Imran argues for a delay to the hearing because of the leak of Corey's name by Jack Webster - but it is agreed that no-one much saw it before it was taken down and the judge rules against Imran on that point.  So the trial is on.  Imran does get agreement that the accused be allowed to sit in the well of the court rather than in the dock, so a minor win on that point.  He then seeks to have the case winning (as he sees it) "blood splatter" evidence to be permitted.  Sabeen has her own expert on the case and apparently the police both failed to photograph the trainers before putting them into store - so the original state of the trainers cannot be ascertained) and also stored them in a plastic bag rather than a paper bag - so they have "sweated" and therefore the current splatter pattern may well not be the original splatter pattern - Imran loses the legal point and is denied the opportunity to appeal.

There are a couple of sub-plots running alongside the main activity.  Simon having heard Leanne and R'Toyota discussing the case pops into the prison to see Kelly who tells him that she cannot see herself doing time.  She knows she was partly responsible for starting events - but repeats that she was not involved in Seb's death (and at the time we saw her holding back from running in when the beating started) and she cannot face being in prison for a long time.  Simon goes to the cafe to apply pressure on Nina to try and remember more of the events - but she is clear that it is far too distressing and she does not want to do so. Roy arrives and sends Simon on his way.  Sabeen later overhears that Simon has been interfering with a witness and no doubt will make much of that at the trial next week.

The other sub-plot is Abi trying to find ways of occupying her brain to stop thinking of events past and future.

Sabeen is playing mind games with Imran, tracking him down at the Bistro (odd place to work) ordering two Harvey Wallbangers and theoretically wanting to discuss the offer by the prosecution and the CPS of reduced sentences if the accused plead guilty - 8 years for Kelly.  Toyah is present as the drinks are delivered (spot the speaking extra above - new staff in the Bistro)!

And once home Imran tells Toyah not to worry about Sabeen - he did not touch the drink - but Toyah is concerned about Kelly and the offer.  Imran says that in the absence of the blood splatter evidence he does not really have a defence case and that Kelly's best option might be to plead guilty. He looks resigned to losing the case.  Which is tonight's action on the Street!

I am hoping that Jenny and Johnny can actually get back together; I do not like the way that Ronnie treated his wife when she visited and as I understand it he is married as is Jenny.  In fact I would like the wife to return and we hear the true story!  Grace and Michael - please both go to Hull - you know it makes sense.  Nina - I think you can remember (you're a Womble for those old enough).  And there are certain stories in Corrie that are too good to forget - come back Pat Phelan all is forgiven.

Next week Ms Kelstar will guide you through the no doubt complex legal discussions as the case unravels.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 30 July 2021

Really Billy?  We all know that Todd has been lowlife for over 10 years so why pack his suit and shoes for the soup kitchen?  Just given him his possessions - he needs that suit to go to work.  Indeed much of tonight concerns the after effects of Paul's broadcast of Will's tape.  To summarise rapidly Billy packed up his stuff and took some round to Eileen who refused to accept it.  Todd turned up from court (he must have been first on) and has been given community service so in line with Boris and Priti's announcements this week we should see him in a hi-viz jacket cleaning up the Street; this gives Bill a chance to throw his ring back at his ex-partner.  Having picked up the dumped bag he asked Eileen for a roof over his head but she also closed the door on him.  He heads to see George to ask for his wages and says he is heading off because his life in Weatherfield is over - the Maldives or perhaps Ashby-de-la-Zouch (or as the locals call it Ashby-de-la-Zouch-by-the-sea).

Todd has lost Billy, Summer and his mother and is at rock bottom; as George observes he cannot say anything without it being slight snide or dig or with a smile on his face and that Todd cannot sink any lower.  Then George makes a slightly strange remark above - so perhaps for much of the time we knew Archie he and George were estranged - which would explain much - but as George goes on to say he turned his life around and was eventually forgiven.  So he offers Todd the chance and make it to the people he has wounded - but it will be a long journey (and frankly I don't think Todd is capable of it) as Billy makes clear later that he will never be able to forgive Todd as he has broken both his and Summer's hearts.

Billy meets Paul in the Street and offers to buy him a brew in the cafe and give him a long overdue apology.  Paul capitalises on the offer and suggests a hot pot in the Rovers (above).  Billy repents - the "way I treated you (Paul) is unforgiveable and I wish I could take it back."  Whilst Paul acknowledges the apology he also his say about the way he was treated and he now feels that Billy was never good enough for him.

Aadi presses cider on Summer whom we later discover passed out in the flat when Todd breaks in (above).  Apparently she did not take her insulin today because she cannot stand the alarm on her phone buzzing in front of her friends.  She is sitting up quite quickly in hospital and Billy refuses to let Todd see her.  Billy also decides that Summer is going to be his first priority now.  Is he going to give up being an archdeacon again?  He promises her that from now on it is just the two of them.

Michael clearly regrets spending the night with Grace.  Also she has something going on as Michael sees a strange man leaving the house (above).  Ronnie and Michael have checked on James in the hospital where the operation has happened and he is unable to play for two months by which time as James knows getting a start in the first team will be very difficult, even if he is 100% fit.  Also most of the spectators will have forgotten that he has come out so that will all flare up again.  Michael later checks Grace's phone but is unable to find out what is going on.

Apparently Gemma has been talking to Freda (do they even know each other?) who has found a better BSL teacher to help Chesney.  Gemma conveys her excitement in sign language which leaves Chesney cold.  He is left even more cold when the teacher (above) tries to tell him something and we feel - like Ches - totally left out of the conversation - Ches grasps that everyone - and beyond that Gemma has to explain "learns at their own pace".  Later in the cafe Gemma, Freda and the teacher discuss the cochlear implants - but her objection seems to be based around robbing Aled of his silent world and being different.  Given there is no certainty of success I am not at all sure I understand the argument and (sorry) do not feel that the treatment here is helping explain it to me.

In a failed attempt to inject some humour into the evening Ty finds he has to construct a flat pack cot.  Alina withdraws but later remarks that she heard him shouting at it, apparently the instructions were rubbish.  We know this because he builds it in the living room at the flat and will have to take it apart as it will not fit the doorway into the bedroom.  So when Hope comes round it sticks out like a sore thumb (Ruby is at a sleepover somewhere else).  And Hope immediately expects that baby PopTy will get her (and Ruby's) bedroom and she is not giving it up (above).  Hope is already behaving like a stroppy teenager - "Frozen" is for little kids and pyjama parties do not cut it either!

Fiz has a date with Phill but is not overly interested in his story about monitor lizards and keeps rabbiting on about Hope not being related to the baby PopTy and then before Phill can get a word in edgeways Fiz realises she is not yet ready for another relationship and needs to look after the girls and get her head together, so that's all over for now (above).

And in the best bit of acting this evening the baby's missing teddy got it as Hope separated head from body.  I sense that Evelyn assuring Fiz that all was well with Hope when she came home earlier may not be right and in reality Hope has a touch of the "David Platt" syndrome and before long she will be pushing people downstairs, causing car accidents and no-one will be safe in her mission to destroy!

I felt at odds with the Street tonight.  Sometimes I feel that they have given up beating the carpets in the back garden and replaced it with beating us over the head for no good reason.  If you have not already detected it above I felt that the approach to the Aled story tonight demeaned the viewers.  It is standard practice when using a foreign language for English subtitles to be provided.  I am sorry as I know this will cause offence but firstly Gemma accepted the decision for the implants several weeks back and secondly if you are going to use sign language then treat it as the foreign language it is to most viewers and provide subtitles.  Instead we have poor Freda acting as interpreter and that mis-step wrecked what might have been the excellent intentions of the production team.  This is my personal view and you can address comments to me on Twitter.
