Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 15 September 2023

Welcome.  Looks like Courtney has spent the night at number 7 - and Dev tells Aadi that such women will be his downfall which leads Asha to point out that his romantic history has not been perfect (eg Kim Tate  Erica Holroyd, Geena, Deirdre, Tracy, Nina, Patricia Farnham, Debs Brownlow [(who looked very much like Fern and Bernie) plus others].  Dev keeps trying to warn Aadi off his folly but the hormones are raging.  Courtney gets up in time for lunch in the Bistro.  Luckily Aadi can afford that because Darren has taken advantage of his controlling ability and cut off the cards, access to the joint account and has got his solicitor working on the divorce, reminding Courtney that she signed a pre-nup and they each leave the marriage as they entered it.  Courtney is starting to think she has made an almighty mistake.

Paul is refusing to use the wheelchair, but after a plethora of identical brand new laptops appear, he talks to Bernie and undercovers the fencing deal she has going with Big Garth and Shelly and the money.  He decides that he needs to buy Shelly a rather special piece of vinyl and to pop along to see her and say that there should be no more dodgy business - although along the way he admits to Billy what is happening and the vicar delivers no moral view - but is grateful for Paul's honesty.  Paul however finds the stroll too much and takes a tumble on a curiously empty (and much graffitied) quayside.  Eventually (well after the ad break) he composes himself and summons assistance - Todd - who both takes him home and gives him the bad news - "time for the wheelchair old chap".  Summer-salt powers the wheelchair into the Rovers where Daniel assesses the situation rapidly and tells Paul that being in a wheelchair does not mean he gets out of going to the bar for his round!  Ice broken and smiles all round.  Later Paul tells Bernie he will not be reporting her activities, telling her to be very careful, and tries to phone Shelly but simply gets her answering machine message again.

Edron Erections have signed the Bankford development land deal and celebrate with dinner in Speed Dahl.  Ed is mysteriously late and denies that Kirk can have seen him in Three Bookmakers (Curzon) Street.  Ron is not so sure and we saw Ed making notes of racing tips earlier in the day in Roy's on a newspaper.  Ron asks Ed if he is struggling but Ed assures him he has no problem and is in control; he is definitely not struggling, just missing Aggie.  Kirk spends the day buying dolphin-friendly food.

Stu and Alya start collecting video clips to send to Yasmeen for her impending birthday - but as Eliza is ignoring Stu's communications she is not invited to participate.  The  social worker, Felicity Hassall, tells Stu that Eliza may actually be better to stay with Dom for now - although Stu tells her about Dom's request for money it does not seem to hold much weight.  Roy has been asked to join Yasmeen's birthday  video where the Ruby / Sam / Eliza triad find out about the project and help him do a "Love Actually" card style presentation.  Ruby then tells Eliza some home truths about her behaviour which leads Eliza to sing "Happy Birthday" (no royalties payable any longer) backed on mouth harmonies by Ruby and Sam and once it is sent to Stu it cheers him that Eliza says "Love You" on the text message.  Is Hope going to be the new Ena Sharples?

Adam takes pity on Dee Dee's inability to organise her social life and gets Joel seated in the Bistro and welcomes a dolled up Dee Dee - who is not there for a post-work drink with the boss but instead an evening of chat with Joel.  They talk about brothers and Joel seems impressed that she is James' sister as he is a Wethy County supporter and remembers the coming-out storyline.  Later he walks her home and she kisses him - but is he that bothered?  And then they both kiss each other.

Darren has come to the conclusion that Dev is not responsible for Aadi's activities and comes to the shop to admit that  - but tells Dev the shop deal is off - he accepts that Dev is innocent - but being in business with the father of the 18 year old who has stolen his wife away is a step too far for his business connections and his personal feelings.  Darren departs telling Dev just how stubborn Courtney can be.

Paul tries again to phone Shelly - but still that wretched answering machine.  We see the phone ringing and then a carer (Jim) admitting to ambulance staff that there is no pulse and that he thinks she went in her sleep - which may be true although the look on his face might tell another story.  It looks like she will never get to listen to that Edwin Hawkins gospel vinyl.

Tonight amongst all the high drama and low cunning there was a short scene with Debs and Ron ordering at the Bistro.  In itself nothing - but a delightful exchange between the ever excellent Sue Devaney and Vinta Morgan, over who eats what and how they do it.  This is why we watch Corrie - the small domestic touches and please can we have more of them?  About 20 minutes in on ITV X - go find it.

Coronation Street Episode Review Thursday 7 September 2023

As they say ... if you have it flaunt it - so Courtney does - and is annoyed when Aadi won't sack off work.  To show what he is missing inside the hot tub she sends him a picture of herself in a bikini (not suitable for family websites).  Now I do not know much about this interwebby thingy - but I do know (thank you Asha and Kelly) that once a picture is somewhere out there it can reach places you might not want.  Business between Lee Darren and Dev appears to be going well and Courtney is under-appreciated - except by Aadi who reckons she is the real brains of the business and should be running it with Darren as arm-candy rather than vice versa.  Amy spots Courtney and Aadi flirting and gives him a right telling off as anyone can see what is going on in their "secret" affair!

As remarked elsewhere a revolving door on the front door of number 9 would be a good idea.  Abi has managed a night Cassie-sitting - but  the never seen Alfie needs his mummy and so she cannot continue.  Cassie is back to appearing to try and agrees to go with Abi to a "support group" but only if Tyrone comes.  She uses it as an opportunity to trot out her version of reality in that her mother threw her out of the house and she had to fend for herself.  As Her Majesty (and Evelyn) might remark at this point "recollections may vary".  Tyrone however swallows, the story, hook, line, sinker and entire fishing rod and fisherman as Cassie expected.  Oh for a Blanche at this moment!  For some reason Cassie is insistent that whatever Ty thinks of Evelyn she must not be told the story.  Abi begs for fairness on both sides but at the moment Ty is Team Cassie.

Max is directed by David to get to the salon (not Trim Up North) and start learning how to sweep up as part of his new career as a hairdresser.  On arrival he is deposited into a scene from "Grim Up North" as after the throwing fit it is clear that Lauren has smeared the walls with some hair dye (well it might be excrement but I will give her the benefit of the doubt).  As David and Maria are not in today they set about sorting it out and trying to clean up.  Luckily Maria when she arrives pulls out the smartest observation of the day - why is everything in the wrong place?  And how did that mirror (7 years bad luck Lauren) get broken?  Max attempts a cover up - but before long a policewoman is at Roy's Rolls seeking Lauren's assistance down at the station.  David only wanted a crime number for the insurance.  Roy gets Dee Dee and toddles off to the Plod Place (which from Imran/Toyah we know is miles away and a dangerous drive) to find that Lauren has been allocated a duty solicitor - "some old duffer" observes Dee Dee.  However the smart solicitor escorting Lauren has managed to secure a caution for Lauren and on return to Roy's Rolls dear avuncular Roy arranges for Lauren to spend some nights, at his expense, in a local B&B until she can find something more permanent.  Later Max tells Sabrina the entire story and she is relatively relaxed - Max will do until she finds someone better.

Ronnie has sold the shares, they have the cash and whilst some will be held for the "Bankford development" they will share the rest with it going into Ed's personal account - it cannot be into an account which Aggie can see.  Just a little later Michael is also in the money as the Nippersnapper cash has arrived!  And he simply does not know what to do with it as he tells Uncle Ronnie who suggests it be used to "build" something for Michael and the never seen Glory.  Unlike Maria it is clear that Michael will never become "Brain of Weatherfield" as he decides that the best home for his new found wealth is not bricks and mortar of his own, or indeed his own business - but to hand it over to "EdRon dodgy geezers I happened to meet in the pub Limited" for their new business.  Ed urges caution but the other two over-rule him.  What could possibly go wrong if everyone's eggs are in the same basket?

Eliza is planning watching 32 Marvel movies with her father Dom - one on each visit.  However after school she decides she is not going as her period started during PE.  She feels ashamed.  Stu does his best.  Later Alya re-assures Eliza and the visit to her father is back on - he might be a little late but she is sure he is coming.  Much later as they finish watching a Marvel film together she gets a message that his car broke down and she cannot visit.  Stu feels it proves that Dom is flaky but Alya suggests the benefit of the doubt.  Anyway Dom is going to take Eliza out for breakfast.

Of all the gin joints in all the world an "old duffer" better known as Joel and Diana meet again.  Dee Dee offers him a drink to apologise for earlier and even Glenda behind the bar senses the electricity in the air as the two look at each other.

Ty lays down the law.  Cassie is staying and he refuses to tell Evelyn Cassie's stories.  Evelyn storms around and tells Ty he has a week to come to his senses.  She packs to move back to the flat and Cassie says she will get herself sorted and Evelyn observes that will happen when Nelson gets his eye back.  Meanwhile two young girls are at risk because Ty wants to save his mother.

I think I will observe that what Cassie needed 40 years ago was a "Roy", regrettably about then he was catching the dodgers and divers and skivers in "Boys from the Blackstuff".  We could all do with a "Roy" in our lives.

I suspect my record of events hardly does justice to them and I have already been a little harsh in recent weeks.  So a few personal cards.  I have a family member who can deliver the "Cassie style" story - but who knows the real truth?  Given personal experience I do not believe them.  Addiction is bad - we know - but do we need both Cassie and Edison at the same time - so I will place bets on him not relapsing because we cannot have two cast members fall off the wagon together.  Courtney feels like a cartoon character (and sadly Dev now feels that he has moved into cartoon land as well).  All credit to those on screen - they are working wonders with the material and I also believe the writers are writing some excellent material (a great line from David to Maria about wearing marigolds) - but some of those storylines need to be removed and use the power of the writers and actors with some real character pieces and activities on the Street.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 28 July 2023

You never quite know what is going to come up and the week has had some great lines embedded in the action so I had quite a laugh on Wednesday - but will I be in similar spirits today?
Who's the Daddy opens the show - Sarah knows that it is the spawn of the Devil Damon but maintains that Adam has a baby Baldwin on the way (if it is a boy may I suggest it be called Michael Kenneth) and Uncle Stephen (such a nice well-meaning uncle) volunteers to stay in the flat and intercept the letter when it arrives.  He then proves to be a master forger with some cutting and pasting and copying and hey presto Adam is now the 99.99% probable father of the little tyke.  (Which to my mind raises an interesting question - what validity can really be placed in all those utility invoices people use to "prove" their identity?).

Never mind, Adam is chuffed to little mint balls (Uncle Joe's of course) and decides to throw a gender reveal party next week when the blood test results come in!  Sarah meanwhile remains a moody moo-moo and is not at all pleased about Uncle Stephen's deceit - and to think he is such a good upright upstanding member of the family.  Adam wants Nippersnapper to start a range of kilts so that he and the baby can match!

Ryan has new obsession - apparently Nick is a far faster runner and Ryan has ordered weights and other gym equipment.  A mystery package for Colm McSweeney has arrived at the flat which Ryan opens later and it contains what I am assuming are illegal steroids.  We see him taking a "before" photo and his journey to being "wham" or "swole" or "ripped" will be documented online he tells Carla who tries to explain that he needs to apologise to Daisy for his latest outpouring.

Dev has had a bad dream - but not as bad as the one where he had a sexual encounter with Steve.  Dev thinks that Courtney might be in love with him - Aadi can disabuse him of that thought.  Aadi is not sure they need to end up in bed with their new partners!

A meeting between the partners at the Bistro is the opportunity for the Vances to announce that they are off on a Caribbean cruise shortly so need to get the deal done.  Amazing timing - new units need fitting out and the money needed is paying for a cruise in foreign parts - and the Vances are keen to get the deal done before they go - so the Alahan cash is going to a good home - Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada - I wonder when the grenade will explode?  A little later Dev is explaining to Aadi how to savour a good wine (a £12 red!), much to the amusement of Courtney who is "hiding" in the kitchen having almost been caught in flagrante delicto with Aadi on the sofa who could not go through with it as there was Sunita on the side watching (in a photograph).  For the uninitiated, Dev later reminds the watching millions that is ten years since the wonderful Sunita departed.

Jenny has an obsession - her new spiraliser!

Daniel and Daisy are finding living at Ken's problematic - and flats are either too expensive or too grotty plus the refugees are still in Daniel's own house.  Stephen's housing problem is solved for a while when Tim lets him know that Elaine has said he can stay at the flat until she knows what she wants.

Todd and George attend the presentation for Young Funeral Director of the Year which surprisingly (to the competition) Todd wins receiving a small coffin in recognition.  George's competitor, Troy Sawyer of "Rest Easy" leaves Todd a note suggesting a new job - George sees the note and removes it.  Later he makes good on Elaine's suggestion of a pay increase by £200 a month - and Todd commits to becoming a qualified undertaker.  I wonder how much Ellie (Troy's candidate for the award) would have received had she won the award?  As George stated earlier he and Todd have full trust and confidence in each other and Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Services is not doing that well (did Estelle ever pay up - Little Big Shotz has a mention this week from Glenda).

In an apparent side story, Nick wants Damon out of the Bistro and tells Sarah that he has finally made contact with the invisible man (and the baby Daddy) who gave him an arancini recipe but will sign over the late licence and will not be involved in the Bistro.  Which would be well and good except that later Sarah looks at her phone and finds that Damon wants to be involved with her!  Just when Uncle Stephen had sorted it!

Sidelight - Yasmeen tells Ryan that she wants to do the Wild Atlantic Way and apart from Cork it was a fantastic trip when we did it earlier this year (part of my long absence).  Stunning scenery, some excellent food and the exotic Listowell and Ballybunion Railway. - truly one of the wonders of the  (railway) world.  And we only did parts of it - we did not make Dingle - so I hope Yasmeen will get there.

And finally - can Dev tell us the nature of the sexual encounter with Steve - more information needed!  I remain cheered by most of tonight and whilst I can understand just why Ryan might be driven by demons I fear for his mental state.  If you want to comment tell me below or let me know on Twitter.
