The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 31st July and 2nd August 1995

Alec resorted to desperate measures to stop Vicky from marrying Steve: shameless bribery.  He handed Steve a cheque for £5000, his on the condition that he left Vicky and never saw her again.  Steve told him to stuff it (though he did also suggest £8000 might be a better offer) and Vicky was furious with her granddad.  She announced that they were absconding to St Lucia to get married instead.  Mike agreed to let Roy stay on at Crimea Street if he kept his nose clean, but he should've been concentrating on his other tenants, as Tricia was spreading it round the Street that Deirdre was his bit on the side.  Word got to Audrey, and she passed it on to Alma; it distracted her from her business meeting and she ended up arguing with Mike.  He told her there was nothing in it and tried to get her to talk to Deirdre, but Alma chickened out.  Bill was worried about meeting Sally for the first time and decided to cook her a special tea.  He promptly set the kitchen on fire and had to call out the fire brigade.  And a puberty-stricken Nicky tried to get in with Fiona and Maxine at the cafe flat, pretending he was sixteen; they basically chewed him up and spat him out and he fled in terror.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 4th and 7th August 1995

Sally returned from her holiday (with a remarkably good tan considering she was meant to be in Wales) and discovered both her father-in-law and her wrecked kitchen.  He offered to rebuild it himself.  Sally was surprisingly calm about it all.  Imagine if 2020 Sally came back to a burnt out house; she'd have Tim's testicles dangling from a telegraph pole before sundown.  Jack and Vera also returned from their hols, chatting about buying timeshares, even though their inheritance cheque hadn't yet arrived.  Until then they were scrabbling around for cash, trying to get drinks on tick from the Rovers and passing off pesetas as ten pence pieces in the corner shop.  Bet gave Vicky a champagne breakfast and waved her off to her wedding abroad.  After she'd gone, Alec sat down with Bet and they had a heart-to-heart, a wonderful scene where he offered to stay with her at the Rovers.  She admitted she'd thought about it but still sent him off to Southampton.  Derek, meanwhile, got a parcel with a gnome's ear in it and a ransom note. Will this nightmare ever end?  Not Derek's, the viewers.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 9th and 11th August 1995

Deirdre was concerned when she heard a clattering outside the flats and reported a prowler to the police.  It turned out to be Jamie trying to sneak in; he'd forgotten his key and Tricia was out with a fancy man.  Deirdre took him in but had a word with Tricia the next day about neglecting him; she pointed out that her daughter was a pill popper so she couldn't exactly complain.  The policemen then headed to the Red Rec, where they arrested Derek for being a pervert loitering with intent after dark.  Weirdly they didn't believe his explanation, which was that he was hanging chocolate coins on the swing as a ransom for his missing gnome.  He ended up bellowing in the Street at the neighbours and I fear he's finally lost his mind.  (Incidentally the policemen were better known as Tom the teacher from Waterloo Road and Marlon Dingle).  Jack and Vera were reaching the end of their meagre savings, and having to ask for credit for a while, which caused them real heartbreak.  Luckily their cheque arrived from the solicitor's.  And in a sad little story, Des and Andy started tidying up before Phyllis arrived, because she could no longer cope.  At first she was offended but they had a chat and he agreed to pay her to do his ironing for him.  Bless.  She should've asked Des for a MIG fighter while he was at it.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 14th and 16th August 1995

It was all go in the Holdsworth household.  Reg was thrilled to hear that Eric Firman, head of Firman's Freezers, was thinking of retiring, and assumed he'd be next in line.  There was also a prospective buyer for the Corner Shop, though Reg was less amused to find it was Vera and Jack.  He assumed they were just being nosy, but when Vera explained about their inheritance, he fell over himself to bow and scrape to her.  She looked at the books and discovered Alf still had an outstanding debt of £26 which amused her endlessly.  Liz was distracted, as she thought she might be pregnant.  She and Jim were in turmoil after their terrible experience with little Katie, so when it turned out to be a false alarm, they were both relieved and upset.  They decided to consider more permanent contraception.  Gail went to see Ivy at the religious retreat and discovered she was in a right state since Don wanted a divorce.  Don, obviously, couldn't give a monkey's, though Josie felt a bit sorry for her.

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 18th and 21st August 1995

Liz got a call from Steve to say the marriage with Vicky had gone ahead; she was sad she wasn't at the wedding.  Don't worry love, there's going to be loads more for you to buy hats for.  Jim meanwhile decided to get a vasectomy, much to Andy's amusement.  The Duckworths put in a ridiculously low offer for the shop and Reg threw it back in their face.  Unfortunately Jack had already handed in his notice at the pub, leaving Bet to hire Bill as the new cellarman.  They had a party anyway, inviting the Street to share in their good fortune, and Jack stuck some optics behind that tacky bar in his front room.  He also gave Vera the engagement ring he'd never been able to afford to give her before, which was very sweet.  Reg didn't get the promotion, with Eric installing his nephew Leo as the boss instead, so he tried to get the Duckworths to reconsider their bid.  They were far too busy enjoying their new-found wealth to care.

Nice though it is to see them happy, the Duckies with money seems weird somehow.  Tell me I'm wrong on Twitter @merseytart.

The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 10th and 12th July 1995

Mike's attempts to sell number 1 to Ken were being thwarted by Tricia and Jamie.  They barricaded themselves in the house, enlisting Vera to help them out, and bellowed at him from the top window as he tried to let Ken and Denise in for a viewing.  (Denise had all sorts of plans for the house, like whitewashing the back yard and knocking through to the front parlour, none of which ever happened).  When Baldwin persisted Jamie filled up Uncle Albert's old chamber pot with what I hope was water and chucked it all over him.  Deirdre decided to make a life for herself back in Weatherfield.  She accepted Mike's offer to be caretaker at his flats on Crimea Street, and saw Tracy at Denise's flat.  They had a heart-to-heart where Deirdre told Tracy she loved her.  Josie was locking up the surgery where she worked when she was assaulted by a youth looking for drugs.  Don scared him off, but she was still shaken up, and agreed to stay at number 5 with him.  Jack had to attend the solicitor's for his late brother's estate, which panicked him because he assumed he was going to be lumbered with Cliff's debts.  It turned out the news was a lot better - he'd been left £30,000.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 14th and 17th July 1995

The flats at Crimea Street proved to be both a blessing and a curse for Mike Baldwin.  He offered Tricia a flat there to get her out of number one, and she happily made the swap.  Deirdre also moved in, though Ken was disgusted to realise she was "skivvying" for him.  However, when Deirdre mentioned her job to Alma, she was shocked.  Alma had no idea Mike had even bought the flats, and when he told her he had fingers in a lot of pies, she bristled.  He'd had a go at her for running her catering consultancy and she'd considered giving it up; now she realised how low on his list of priorities she was Alma decided to redouble her efforts and make a go of it.  Jack and Vera tried to work out how to spend Cliff's money.  They decided to sell up the contents of his house and splash out on a flash holiday.  Rita was also thinking about holidays, and offered to take Sally and the girls away for a bit of a break.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 19th and 21st July 1995

Jack and Vera headed to the market to sell off what was left of Cliff's stuff.  They discovered that they'd let the junk dealer run off with a valuable vase, but they couldn't get it back off him, and finished their day on the market with a pittance.  Curly and Des lent them the money for their holiday to cheer them up, though Jack admitted he was scared of flying.  Alec and Vicky returned from Southampton with Gilroy claiming he'd worked a wedge between the newly engaged couple.  She was playing him though, and Vicky booked a church for the wedding in August.  Alec got a fillip however when he heard Fiona talking about Steve's debts.  Don decided to divorce Ivy so he could be with Josie, and Deirdre encountered another of Crimea Street's residents: a certain Royston Cropper...

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 24th and 26th July 1995

Alec was resorting to desperate methods to get at Steve.  He went to the loan sharks (where a thug was played by the unlikely form of Kenneth from Benidorm) to try and get them to lean on him, and he went to Vicky's solicitor to try and get him to hold on to her inheritance until she was 25.  He ended up telling Steve that there was a clause in the will stopping Vicky from getting anything if she married unwisely.  Kevin was enjoying being on his own, getting the lads round to his house to... play Scalextric.  He soon had something to occupy him when his dad Bill turned up unexpectedly.  Kevin told Jim about Bill, and how they'd not seen each other for a decade - he'd not even met Sally.  It turned out Bill's wife, Percy's niece Elaine, had run off with another man.  Audrey immediately started flirting with him in the pub, and we all know how that ended up.  The hot water tank at Crimea Street leaked on the residents and Roy used the opportunity to cosy up to Deirdre, because he's kind of creepy in these early days.  He also has a much stronger Northern accent.  Deirdre was upset to realise Tricia had told him about Samir.  And Ken and Denise moved into number 1, with her deciding to get Ken put on Daniel's birth certificate.

FRIDAY - Only one episode today, from the 28th July 1995

Roy continued to harass Deirdre, making her feel uncomfortable, and she told Mike.  When Roy knocked on her door to offer her a drink (of whiskey!  Roy Cropper, drinking whiskey out of the bottle!) Mike gave him his notice.  Roy misinterpreted the situation, and thought Deirdre was Baldwin's fancy piece - which Tricia overheard.  Vicky told Alec that Steve would marry her even if she was penniless (LOL) but she still informed Steve that there was no clause in her parents' will barring their wedding.  Bill got comfortable back on the Street.  Maureen immediately started flirting with him in the shop, and we all know how that ended up.  Maxine moved Fiona into the cafe flat so they could be fun gal pals.  And there was a load of interminable nonsense involving Derek, his missing garden gnome and a mantrap, but I refuse to give it the attention it absolutely doesn't deserve.

If this gnome business doesn't end soon, @merseytart is going to stick his foot through his telly and send ITV3 the bill.

Classic Corrie is on ITV3 every weekday from 14:50, and it's now on the ITV Hub as well, so really you've got no excuse to miss it.  You're in lockdown, what else are you going to do?

The Week In Classic Corrie

MONDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 16th and 19th June 1995

The thorny issue of money haunted the Street's residents.  Steve was still in terrible financial state, but Vicky agreed to bail him out.  He promptly took the money and treated Fiona to a slap up meal.  Things took a turn though when she realised who'd paid for it and she threw his stuff out of the cafe flat.  Jack was in arrears with his Council Tax, much to Vera's fury; he told her he'd spent the money on their caravan holiday.  It looked like that was the end of Vera's retirement plans.  Audrey was still glowing over Alf's OBE (although she was disgusted when the Gazette used a picture of him with Betty), until the Council called him and told him that £7000 had disappeared from the Mayor's charity fund under the his watch.  Audrey wasn't bothered until Alf told her they might withdraw the gong as punishment.  And Derek's gnome went missing again.  He accused Des, and he accused the Platt children, and they all concluded he was out of his mind.  They have a point.

TUESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 21st and 23rd June 1995

The missing money from the Mayoral fund made the papers, and the whole Street was agog.  The piece claimed that Alf refused to comment, though they had contacted Audrey and she'd told the reporter to sling his hook because she was still smarting over Betty getting her picture on page 3 instead of her.  Tracy discharged herself from hospital because she was scared about seeing Deirdre again.  She fled to Blackpool.  Steve was dossing in the print shop which upset Liz; she didn't know why he didn't want to kip at hers.  The McDonalds gave the twins £500 each for their 21st.  But Steve received a windfall of a different kind when Vicky turned up in the factory and started taking her clothes off.  It turned out Vera hadn't paid the mortgage for a couple of months either, so a summons from the Council for the unpaid Tax was just piling on the misery.  Out of desperation she turned to God, praying for the money, and it appeared God was listening, because He promptly killed Jack's brother Cliff.

WEDNESDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 26th and 28th June 1995

Steve McDonald began a grand tradition in today's episode: if in doubt, ask someone to marry you.  The "lucky" lady was Vicky of course, and she accepted.  They celebrated by hanging out together at Des's house, a romantic rendezvous interrupted by a deeply shocked Phyllis.  Vera was wracked with guilt over Cliff's death, but Jack was more concerned about who was paying for the funeral.  Luckily Cliff's brother in law stepped in.  Deirdre returned from Morocco.  The Rachid family had been lovely to her, but her feelings about Tracy hadn't relented.  Ken told her that Tracy was in Blackpool and she didn't give a monkey's.

THURSDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 30th June and 3rd July 1995

Mike had a new business plan.  He planned on buying a block of flats on Crimea Street, and offered Deirdre a cheap flat if she'd act as manageress.  She went to stay with Blanche to think about it.  To pay for the flats, Mike offered number 1 to Ken.  Audrey went to lunch with Brian, her old chauffeur, where he told her that the person responsible for the missing money was actually Derek's old nemesis Councillor Harry Potts.  The twins celebrated their 21st birthday with a party in the Rovers.  Fiona gave Steve a birthday kiss which inflamed Vicky's jealousies.  She made a toast where she announced her engagement.  Bet was understandably incandescent with rage and summoned the big guns for support.  Alec!

FRIDAY - Episodes originally broadcast 5th and 7th July 1995

It's only when you see Alec and Bet back together that you realise how much you missed them.  Their banter was so effortless and charming and lovely it was a shame it was only temporary.  Vicky and Steve decided to get married right away, meaning that the Gilroys were left dashing to the registry office to try and stop it.  Alec told her to wait and have a proper church do, though this was just a subterfuge.  Vicky fell for it and went back to Southampton with him to plan the wedding in August.  Brian told Alf that Harry had a nom de plume, and Alf realised he'd signed cheques to the fake name.  Harry and his girlfriend blamed one another and the police were called.  Ken told Denise that he was planning on buying number 1, but she wasn't keen on them making it their family home because he'd lived there with his ex-wife.  She finally agreed, but only if she could look round it first; unfortunately Tricia refused to play ball.

Perhaps the worst part of Alec's return from Southampton is knowing that it's the beginning of the end for Bet's time on the show.  Commiserate with me on Twitter @merseytart.
