Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 20th of July 8 pm

50 grand, 30 grand, or 24 grand? That's tonight's prize money in the Corrie crime caper competition. Compensation or ransom money: I can't say I'm bothered, either way. I'd much rather we see a random romance on the red rec or in the rovers but in this Netflix / TV streaming era, they need to add spice to the Corrie hotpot. Tonight, Kelly remains trapped by her random enforcers in what I can only assume is a disused part of the Redbank building?  It's a superb set design! Kelly’s captors continue to menace her in the darkly lit basement whilst Gary scurries around to try and find the (ridiculous) £50K ransom demand -he still manages to get £24K (!) from somewhere.

Meanwhile, Maria gets a call from P.C Tinker telling her that the naughty handbag tracker has led them to arrest Darren, the environmental guy, who perved over her at last week’s council shindig. She tells Gary this, but he’s more concerned about assuring Kelly’s safety, who remains trapped and in danger - with distant police sirens giving a sinister edge to the proceedings. Gary meets the kidnappers and gives them £24K, but the men refuse to give her up. Later, he uses a tracker (are they a good thing, now?) to find Kelly but he gets knocked out in a scuffle. Gary soon awakens and crowbars the kidnapper, threatening to finish him off. Kelly then sees that side of him, the murderous one that we viewers all know. Later on, and safely home, they both discuss the aftermath of violence, and a palpable tension is now present between them.

Speaking of silly money amounts and crime, Debbie is struggling to get Ed that compo cash together, and rather than face bankruptcy, starts to get desperate. Aggie seems hellbent on wringing Debbie dry of £30K (a bit steep for an electric shock, but yeah okay) Meeting at Number 3, it seems it's a stalemate, with Aggie demanding the money, and within weeks. Will she kidnap Debbie if Ed doesn't get the cash? I am joking, but I do wonder how Debbie will get out of it? Anyway, that's enough of Corrie's crime for tonight's episode review. In a lighter and more traditional Corrie sense of things;

Gail organises another family meal for the Platt clan, and David announces a planned surprise for Audrey. I wonder if Max will reappear yet? In the meantime, David has a hard time tonight coming up against Gail, and an unforgiving Audrey. I wonder why the lad bothers! Funny though.

I don't play the sport, but I did find myself agreeing with Sean tonight ( a very rare thing) when faced with Frank’s awful attitude towards football and his blatant machismo. Finally showing his true colours to Dylan, Sean did the decent thing by dumping him, I thought, and in fact, that was my favourite moment tonight: real-life relatable drama.

Elsewhere - Phill conjures up another cringeworthy romcom moment in the factory, hurting his back. Helped by Fiz, he deliriously agrees to sign the annulment. Tyrone gets a new tattoo to cover up the AP, and it looks like Mick Hucknall, he didn't realise you can have laser removal treatment! It is expensive though. If I was him I'd borrow some from Gary Windass, or Aggie, just don't be asking Debbie, I think she's skint!

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 6th of July 8 pm

Phill-sized problems keep on coming for Fiz? Pre-wedding nerves are now 100% in overdrive for our flame-haired and harassed bride-to-be. Putting Tyrone firmly in his place, Fiz remains insistent on marrying Phil, and with battle-axe buddies Mimi and Evelyn settling scores, it only leaves Camilla as an outrider that could now destroy the big day? Tonight, the Hen party is in full swing with Maria devising a game of Mr & Mrs, which Camilla predictably wins. Things get worse for Fiz as Camilla admits to email exchanges between her and Phill, and that she still has feelings for him. It then transpires that Phill’s ex had an affair, which she regrets, and she wants him back. Fiz is understandably suspicious, what with Tyrone’s past actions, and spies on Phill, seemingly caught in a clinch with Camilla outside Speed Daal. Maria takes a snapshot on her mobile phone, and ironically, she takes that as proof of Phill’s subterfuge.

Meanwhile - Audrey calls a Platt clan council meeting to discuss divvying her fortune! Audrey isn't dying, but being a rich o.a.p and head of this hilariously dysfunctional bunch of reprobates, she decides to get her affairs in order and clearly aligned. Predictably, the bistro meal descends into chaos as various family members appear to butter up and bribe Audrey into submission, only for Audrey to announce the bequeathing of her cash to Weatherfield’s retail association (W.A.R.T.S) in memory of Alf. Disgusted, David decides to take action and consults Adam about taking power of attorney. Audrey then tells Stephen she’s lying about the warts donation, telling him to keep it a secret from the rest of the clan.

Later, Phill turns up at the Rovers and tells Fiz that he rebuffed Camilla and only shared an innocent hug - no canoodling. Phill then admits to never sending any emails, and Mimi is outed as the culprit. Phill banishes his Mother from the street and bans her from the wedding. Later on, we see Hope secretly accessing Phill’s laptop. Could she be the email spammer and be the one out to sabotage Friday's wedding?

Elsewhere tonight - Steve’s N0.1 roof problem causes more grief, but he manages to find a roofer via a flirtatious cab customer and agrees to pay three grand up front. Alya, Leanne, and Debbie are all annoyed at Toyah’s actions, which seem mired in grief, as she rejects Imran’s ashes. Stu discovers his daughter has moved and conveys his sadness to Yasmeen and Alya.

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 15th of June 8 pm

Imran is dead, Toyah facing a murder charge, and Abi is to have full custody of Alfie? Out of the three, it is the latter that I find to be the most inconceivable in Coronation Street of 2022. Yes, the kid's dad is dead, and Toyah faces a murder charge, but still, you wouldn't let Abi adopt a kid, surely? Arson, substance abuse, alcoholism, theft, forgery: it's a long, long charge sheet. And not forgetting an aborted abduction of baby Alfie, to add to the long list. Surely, surely (as much as I love Abi) not. Tonight, it would seem so. Tonight, we learn that Abi has reapplied for custody, and although she can only adopt her son, rather than fully, we still seem to be ignoring her criminal past - so that's alright then.

Talking of which, Toyah is introduced to her duty solicitor, who's a bit rough and has a (shock horror) tattoo! The residents discuss the whys and wherefore’s of reintroducing the Susie subplot, and even I have trouble remembering what that was about! Toyah? of questionable character? The factory staff have got short memories! Tattoo aside, Toyah must be glad that Adam (and his crazy hair) arent representing her. She may have driven that car into a brick wall, but surely it's mitigated, and Toyah didn't do it deliberately? At least I think that's what the writers want us to believe?

Legal language is banded around in abundance, as always, and Nick was correct in his assumption! If you live on Coronation Street - you are more than used to that kind of talk. Tattooed she may be, but we still get the duty solicitor explaining Toyah's predicament to Leanne and it's explained rather well. Even yours truly understands by the end of it, which is surely a litmus test for all Corrie viewers. Overall, things do look bad - can Toyah’s innocence win things? If she is innocent? I’m still not convinced, and neither is Leanne, even though she ends up paying for her legal team by the time tonight's episode is over. As I have previously exerted on this blog, I think some hidden crash footage is yet to be seen, which will save Toyah from jail? I'm sure the lovely-looking DS Swain is on it. More of her, please!

Cathy's calamitous cocktail class with Jim Fizz may have been full of comedy for us viewers, but the joke was ultimately on Brian. Cathy was drowning in sorrows upon discovering his Dear John letters to Julie Carp, and his hankering for Cornwall. Using Evelyn as a soundboard, tonight Cathy decides to confront Brian about the letters and confess her cocktail kiss with Jim. Meanwhile, Brian remains distracted by the Kabins magazine offerings, and after having a chat with Jenny, contacts Jim Fizz for a cocktail lesson. Unfortunately, Jim blabs about the stolen kiss with Cathy, and the truth is out. Cathy may have mocked up a headline banner proposing to Brian, but it's a different headline entirely by the end of the episode. It's obvious where this is going, but it's entertaining, all the same.

Meanwhile - Gail struggles to steer Audrey away from post-op recovery boozing but lands a job at The Bistro, so Shona gets sent on the wine run instead. Comatose by the end of tonight’s episode, it does seem that Audrey has a drinking problem? Corrie has done this before with Peter, so Im thinking a) it's been done for the older spectrum, or b) it's been muted a bit for comedy value? I doubt it's the latter so we will see how this pans out.

Elsewhere tonight - Weatherfield County unveil their new kit and Tim’s apoplectic! Roy recites his trainspotting memories, which is, of course, Corrie gold. Fiz and Phill’s wedding is confirmed for the 8th of July, and Fiz’s joy is dashed when it transpires that Mimi can make it after all, and plans to arrive early to cause mayhem, no doubt. Save the date on your kitchen calendar!

Brilliant writing again tonight, and following Monday’s hilarity, I think Friday night should be worth a watch! I am @rybazoxo self-styled cobbles connoisseur & Coronation Street superfan

Alan Halsall interview: Will Tyrone rebuild his life with Fiz or take a leap of faith with Alina?

Tyrone Dobbs is currently trying to rebuild his relationship with Fiz after sharing a kiss with Alina, but is it what he really wants? As Tyrone tells Alina to move away, Alan Halsall spoke to us about where Tyrone's real feelings lay, and what this could mean for his future with Fiz.

Tyrone and Fiz had all the symptoms of a happy partnership for many years, but after Tyrone developed feelings for Alina, it's become apparent to them that their relationship lost their spark a long time ago.

"I think Tyrone and Fiz have just been OK, just plodding on," said Alan. "There's no moment that they've lost their spark. I think it's just a progression of their normal daily lives and things have just got a bit boring and the kids, it's hard work. It's not like they've fallen out of love, I think they absolutely love each other, it's just that that spark's gone, and it just happens, sadly."

Tyrone's feelings for Alina came as a surprise to no one more than himself, especially as he thought he had settled with Fiz for life. "I think Tyrone is just happy getting through day by day, he's quite a simple fella anyway," Alan told us. "He just gets his head turned by an attractive girl and an attractive proposition for him. It's something different, it's something new, it's something exciting. I don't think he was looking for it or expecting it.

"I don't think there's any intent at all from Tyrone. There's no malice towards anybody. In Tyrone's world, not just his relationship, I think he just wants everybody to be happy and for everyone to get on. Clearly, the situation that is, that's going to be very hard to do. I think he's so caught up in it all that he doesn't realise the damage that he's doing, and he's caught up in that whirlwind of excitement."

With their relationship now hanging in the balance, Tyrone does his best to try and make amends. However, his feelings for Alina are going to be difficult to ignore, leaving Tyrone in turmoil as he also thinks of Hope and Ruby. Alan said: "I think Tyrone will definitely be conflicted throughout. In a perfect world, he just wants to get caught up in this romance and see how that goes but doesn't really want to hurt Fiz. Of course, then as well, the even bigger dagger is the children. In these types of stories, it's often the children that get, not forgot about or anything, but they become kind of collateral damage in this type of thing.

"It'll be very tough for Tyrone and I think that's why we see him going back and forward. It's not that he hates Fiz... he loves Fiz, just not in that way right now, and he loves Alina in that way right now. It's just such a confliction for him I think right the way throughout."

During the attempt to rebuild his relationship with Fiz, Tyrone tells Alina to move away for the sake of his family. This isn't necessarily what Tyrone really wants though, and is a case of him once again putting his family ahead of his own feelings.

"I think Tyrone will quite happily do that, and I think Tyrone has done that most of his life- he would often put people before himself, and he's trying to do the best for his family at that point. Clearly, he doesn't want Alina to go anywhere, but he's trying to do the best for his family, and I think that's very much a character trait of his. He'll be hurt, but he feels like it's something he needs to do."

It always seemed like Fiz and Tyrone would stay together for the rest of time, so Alan was "shocked" to hear about this storyline. "It came as a bit of a surprise to me, for sure," he said. "Myself and Jennie [McAlpine] have known each other for twenty years, and honestly, there's not a day of it goes by that I don't love working with that woman- she is the most professional, just a joy to work with on a day to day basis. So, you start thinking: 'Oh, I don't want that to go, I love working with Jennie everyday.'"

Alan continued: "As the character, it's fantastic. We want to be part of big stories; this is a big story. It was a big twist to me; I'm hoping it's going to be a big twist to the audience. I hope people are spitting out their cup of tea at half seven on a Monday night saying: 'What's he doing now?' I'm sure he'll get clipped 'round the ear in Tesco a few times for it, but these are the stories we want to be involved with and I'm glad to be a part of it."

The public are bound to have a strong reaction to this storyline, something which could change perspectives of Tyrone. "We'll see the devastation towards Fiz, but also to the children, and I think people relate heavily to that. I don't think he'll get away with it this time. I think he'll definitely be portrayed as the bad lad, and rightly so. Even though I think these feelings have come up on him without meaning it, he's put himself in this position essentially."

Many relationships would crumble under this strain, but is there a chance that Fiz and Tyrone could work it out and stay together? "That's going to be very difficult I suppose after this story, but I don't know," said Alan. "I think in any relationship that you have in life, there's always huge tests. It's testing for every relationship in the world right now, just spending twenty-four hours a day stuck inside with each other, so people get through tests. This'll be a big one, but it might be the making of them, I don't know.

"I suppose that's another joy of us as actors is, we also don't know. We get the scripts and it's a bit of a surprise to us as this story was, and that's the fantastic work that our writers do week in, week out. I'm prepared to go with whatever the script tells me to do. Let's just see where this story takes us, I think there's a lot to go with it."

Tyrone is all over the place where Alina's concerned, but are they in love? "He's completely caught up in it all- the excitement, the romance, and if he sees that as love, then he definitely thinks he's in love, for sure. To whether Alina feels that or if other people believe that, I'm not sure, but for him, I think this is very real."

There could also be moments where viewers see Tyrone change aspects of himself in order to impress Alina. Alan said: "I think he'll do whatever it takes, to be honest with you. If she said it, he'd probably do it. I think there will be a lot of that to come."

Alan has been walking the cobbles as Tyrone for the last twenty-three years, and he is still enjoying it. "I can remember my first day so vividly. With the very, very sad news that we've had this week of Johnny Briggs passing, Johnny was one of the first people I saw in the green room- it feels like yesterday, but it also feels like I've had twenty-three years there. It's such an odd feeling. It's such a brilliant place to be daily. I'm glad Tyrone's been a huge part of my life for all that time. I relate to him in a lot of ways, and I don't relate to him in a lot of other ways."

With his secret kiss now out in the open, will Tyrone try to rebuild his life with Fiz, or will he take a leap of faith with Alina?
