Denise Black - from Corrie to Chekhov

Denise Black, who played Denise Osbourne in Coronation Street, was back on the Street for far too short a length of time, in my opinion. I rate her as a cracking actress and a fantastic character too and was hoping for a bit of romance between Denise and Ken when she returned to the show earlier this year.

But alas, it was not to be.

Denise is a hard-working actress who isn't short of work, however, away from Weatherfield. And she's going to be starring on stage in The Cherry Orchard which opens on Friday 13 October at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff.  You can find out more here.

This new version of The Cherry Orchard places the action in another time on the cusp of huge social change - early 80s Britain at the outset of Margaret Thatcher’s regime.

Denise will play the role of Rainey and she said: "Rainey is a dream come true for any actress and I'm lucky to be the first Rainey but no doubt there will be others."

Will Denise and Shona return? Find out here!

Last week we saw Denise Osbourne leave the cobbles after a wonderfully powerful scene with son Daniel. She told Ken she wasn't going very far in case Daniel needed her again. As far as Corrie's flawed mothers go, Denise is up there with the best of them and I hope we see her again soon.

A Corrie spokesperson told Digital Spy that this was the end of Denise's return stint and there are no plans for her to come back at the moment, though of course, nothing is being ruled out for the future given her strong family ties on the street.

And a Corrie source told Metro: ‘There are no current plans for Denise to return but as she is an established character, never say never!’

And as for Shona?  It does seem very likely indeed that after last week's argument with David over the reveal that Shona was Clayton's mum, wasn't a final exit for Shona.   In an interview with the Coronation Street Blog, which you can read on the link below, Julia Goulding said that Shona would be around on the show until at least October.

Denise Black on playing Coronation Street's Saucy Minx

Denise Black, who plays Denis Osbourne in Coronation Street, was interviewed on ITV's Loose Women yesterday about her return to the show.

It was a good interview and Denise said something about her role in Corrie that I'd completely forgotten. She said that when she was brought into Corrie originally, her character wasn't supposed to get together with Ken, it wasn't what had been planned for Denise.  But Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre, was unwell and away from the show. And while she was away, Denise was moved into the slot of Ken's love interest. Hence their affair and then of course, along came Daniel.

The Loose Women called Denise Osbourne 'a saucy minx' which I think is a good description of Denise when she was younger, with Ken.

Denise said she's getting a lot of love on social media and thinks that there's more mileage in the character too. This fan certainly hopes so.

She said that when she was away from the show, she starred in the stage musical Sister Act. When the show came to Manchester, she delivered invitations to her former Corrie cast members to come and see the show. On the enevelopes with the invitations in them, she'd written "by hand".  On the night of the show, Barbara Knox came to the stage door to give Denise a first-night card and she handed it over saying "by hand and by foot".  I love these little glimpses into life behind the scenes.

Speaking of scenes, Loose Women teased us with a clip from next week's Corrie which shows Denise in the hair salon chatting to Audrey and Rita. Ooh, it's bitter!  Lots of good stuff to come.

Watch the video interview here.

Denise Black Interview: The Return of Daniel’s Mum

The last time we saw Denise Osbourne on Coronation Street was back in 2007 - and now she’s back!

I travelled to Manchester last week to interview Denise Black, who returned tonight to the role of Daniel's mum, Denise Osbourne in Corrie.

Denise is one of my favourite actors and it was an absolute pleasure to meet her.  Full of life with a throaty laugh and a good sense of humour, here’s what she had to say about the return of Denise.

Denise says this about finding out she was coming back to Corrie: “The public seem to have known longer than I have that I was coming back!” she laughed. “Thank goodness they were right. I’ve never been in the eye of the media in that way. I was thinking ‘Wow…  what do they know and I don’t?’”

However, she wouldn’t be drawn into revealing how long she was back for.

When Denise knew she was returning to Corrie, she went back and looked at Denise’s first Corrie appearances in the early 90s.

She says: “It was a different me. I could hardly recognise me, I thought ‘God, I’m hot! What happened?’, but  the experience of life is different, I’ve gained a lot of experience in the interim years. I’m really proud to be part of it.”

I asked her if Denise would be rekindling her romance with Ken, and again she had another good laugh. “He’s looking good isn’t he?” she said, before revealing that there’s a lot of anger between them both to start with. Corrie producer Kate Oates said that Ken’s furious with Denise at first, with a lot of blame and counterblame goin gon.

Denise with the trinket box in which she placed her own personal items
In scenes this week we saw Ken unearth a trinket box which belongs to Daniel's mum.  Denise told us that she put a couple of personal items into the box.

“When I heard that there was a trinket box I put in Denise’s ring from 1992, which was always mine and I took it away and it’s back there. And also, a Corrie 35th anniversary gift went into the box. I also hung about with Rob Mallard (who plays Daniel) and stayed on his sofa and we learned lines so I know what he looks like first thing in the morning! History, that’s what you’re looking for in soap, so I’m very proud to be part of the Barlow history.”

Denise says she’s known all three actors who played Daniel. She explains that she felt it important to “graft straight onto Rob Mallard as an actor and we both approach acting the same way, worrying and obsessing and thinking. You know you’re on it when you start to have your character’s dreams!  It worked, so Rob would be running lines with me, it’s being able to learn the script and keep up to speed. That’s why I think I couldn’t have taken this job if I hadn’t had Emmerdale before and survived.”

Many fans will be wondering where Daniel’s mum has been all of these years.  Denise revealed her back story as follows: “She ran away, she was having a breakdown. I had to get my head around how Daniel was not hauled in by the social services and why, when she got better, did she not go back. I had to believe that was just fear. Obviously Daniel looks incredibly like his dad and she thought he would be better off without her.  She has very, very low self esteem, poor old soul.”

When Denise first came into the show she was written about as if she was a street siren in the Elsie Tanner mould, so what kind of woman is she now?

“Flawed,” Denise says. “The brief I was given was that she speaks her mind, so she’s front footed, not always right, she’s a bit Marmite, you either love her or you hate her. If you are coping with the fact that you abandoned your son and look at the damage that it did I think she is going to be desperate to get it right now.

“If you look at the last time we saw Denise it was 10 years ago on screen, just three years before she abandoned Daniel. She wasn’t in a great state then, she came back and pitched to Ken that they brought up Daniel together and Ken said no.  That was the beginning of some kind of breakdown.”
And what is it that brings her back into the show and Daniel’s life?

“She’s always had her key,” Denis explains. “She returns to the country and sees her house up for sale. Also, the cops are interested in what happened to Denise after Daniel’s taken in for questioning and Denise is listed as a missing person. Now she’s a more interesting missing person, someone at work called her and said the police were asking questions about her. So when she saw the house up for sale, she thought it was now or never.”

And fortunately for Ken tonight, Denise arrived just in the nick of time!

It was a real pleasure to meet Denise and to tell her after the press interviews how pleased I was to see her back in our favourite show.

Denise Black: "I long for the old days of Coronation Street"

Denise Black is returning to Coronation Street as Daniel's mum Denise Osbourne.

And in an interview with the Manchester Evening News this week, she talks about her return to the show and her feelings on how it's changed since she was in it last.

Denise told the MEN: “Sometimes I long for the old days. I talk to Bill Roache and I know he feels the same. Coronation Street was a kitchen sink drama about the working class in Salford and now it’s not so local.

“I remember a scene with Betty and Raquel leaning on the bar of the Rovers, but it is what it is and times have changed. We live in a faster, shinier society now. My friend wrote an episode about Emily Bishop and her budgie.”

Denise played Denise Osbourne in Corrie on and off from 1992 until 1996. She had an affair with Ken which resulted in a son, Daniel. She then reprised her role in 2007.

Most recently she played Joanie in Emmerdale.

Denise is currently starring in the play Winter Hill  at Bolton Octagon from Thursday May 11 to Saturday June 3.

Daniel's mum Denise Osbourne - here's all you need to know!

As we now know, actor Denise Black has been spotted filming at Coronation Street and looks set to reprise her role as Denise Osbourne in the show.

But who is she? Where's she been and why is she coming back?

Well, in a nutshell, here's everything or at least the main things, we know about Denise Osbourne, and what her return could mean for her son Daniel - and her ex-lover, Ken.

Denise with hairdresser Fiona Middleton

Then, Denise, Daniel and Brian moved to Scotland in 1997 and  lost contact with Ken. Sometime later, Denise broke up with Brian and moved back to Manchester with Daniel.

In 2007, Denise sent a card to Ken after learning that Tracy had been sent to prison for murder. Ken went to stay with Denise after experiencing problems with Deirdre. Ken stayed with Denise for a few weeks and although Daniel grew frustrated at his father's presence, Denise became closer and made a pass at Ken. However, Ken turned her down and later returned to Deirdre after a reconciliation.

Her final line, to Ken, was: "Good luck with Deirdre."

I wonder what her first line is going to be when she turns up and sees how close Daniel and Ken have become?

Denise Black spotted filming at Coronation Street

There are some excellent paparazzi pictures out today which seem to suggest Denise Black is back on Coronation Street as Daniel's mum, Denise Osbourne.

The pictures show Denise filming with William Roache, who plays her former fling Ken Barlow.

I wonder what her return mean for Daniel but also for the rest of the Barlows, and whether she and Ken might rekindle their romance?  This is great news for this fan, I really love Denise Black and the character of Denise Osbourne will be a welcome return in our house.

You can see the pictures over at Digital Spy.
