In pics: Coronation Street bus crashes 1969 vs 2015

The Coronation Street bus crash this week was spectacular, that was for sure. I really enjoyed it a lot.  For fun, here's a look at the Coronation Street coach crash of 1969 alongside the crash we saw on screen last week.

First of all, for a soap bus crash, you obviously need a bus.  

Then you need images of happy, smiling people on the bus, unaware of any impending doom.

 Key characters are then aware of the danger....

 They know something's not right...

 ... open mouthed with shock.

And of course you need a tree for the bus to crash into.

 At the hospital afterwards, there might be say, a head injury...

And plenty of hospital bedside scenes.

In 1969 Coronation Street filmed the bus crash in black and white. It was supposed to be Corrie's first ever episode filmed in colour - find out why it wasn't filmed in colour at our blogger Sunny Jim's  50 years in 50 days blog post for 1969.

The mini-bus slippery slope

Holy Hannah, that was superb, absolutely top notch stuff! The bus crash, rescue and hospital scenes were exciting, poignant, emotional and had me alternately on the edge of my seat and in tears.

Top marks to ITV, cast and crew who did absolutely awesome (in the literal meaning of that word) stuff this week! It was one thing to know what was going to happen, due to all the publicity and hype, but a completely different experience actually watching it. It was quite exciting!

Highlights:
Tracy Barlow rescuing Carla, her arch-enemy and the two of them sort of bonding in the ambulance over new boots and new debts.
Julie and Maddie working together to spearhead the rescue.
Tracy nearly going down with the ship, so to speak, when her boot got caught.

Steve in a broken huddle on the floor of the forest, babbling to Michelle and later admitting to her that he was ill.
Julie, the delayed shock hitting her, admitting to Dev that she was not, in fact, okay at all.
Sinead, scared and in pain, admitting to Chesney that she couldn't feel her legs.

First pictures: Coronation Street bus crash horror

These are the first shots of the dramatic mini-bus crash which leaves the life of one of Coronation Street’s much-loved residents hanging in the balance.

The staff of Underworld will be caught up in the horrific accident as they head off on a factory outing - in a Street Cars minibus driven by Steve McDonald.

The night ends in disaster when the bus is cut up and run off the road by a gang of boy racers.

As the dust settles at the crash scene it becomes clear that many of the passengers are injured and at least one of them is trapped in the minibus, which is dangerously close to the edge of a sheer drop!

Will everyone manage to get out safely before the stricken vehicle plunges over the cliff?

The crash will be transmitted across three episodes which will air on January 19th and 21st - but the drama continues in the weeks to come as the residents come to terms with the consequences of the accident.

Sinead Tinker is the most seriously injured and it will be touch and go as to whether she is going to recover from her injuries.

Meanwhile Steve McDonald is finally forced to face up to his depression as his actions on the night of the crash are called into question by his family and the other crash victims.

Arch enemies Carla Connor and Tracy Barlow are also at the centre of the drama which will change their relationship forever.

The mini bus crash was filmed over three weeks and the scenes include hundreds of special effects. Some of the filming even required the cast to be strapped upside down in the smashed up vehicle.

Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn said: ”Everyone involved in filming these dramatic episodes is very proud of the end results. The stunt is breathtaking and is real edge of the seat stuff.

“But, in the spirit of great storytelling, the crash itself is just the start of the drama and will have far reaching effects for all the people involved in the coming months.”

Coronation Street film bus crash scenes

There are paparazzi pictures online of Coronation Street filming in the bus crash scenes this week.  

Corrie producer Stuart Blackburn has already teased the crash, which will be shown early in the new year.

He said: "Yes, coming up in the New Year, there is a real tragedy that's going to affect a dozen or so of our characters. Last year we had David and the car crash and of course that was a stunt, but it genuinely felt like it had come from story. It wasn't us suddenly deciding that we needed to do something spectacular to get the viewers.

"It's the same with what we're planning, because it'll come from a relatively long-running story. It is going to be spectacular and a little bit heartbreaking!"

There will be an Underworld Works outing in the New Year. They all head out in a mini-van driven by Steve McDonald but there's a crash and some of the factory workers will end up in hospital with one person in critical condition.
