Coronation Street book that keeps on giving

It was back in 2014 when this little book was first published.

It's A Perfect Duet: The Diary of Roy and Hayley Cropper, a lovingly written tale of Roy and Hayley's storylines from Hayley Cropper's first scene until her final dying day.

Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played Hayley Cropper, very kindly wrote the foreword for the book

The reason I mention the book on the blog today is that I just want to remind everyone that royalties from this book go to Pancreatic Cancer UK.  I have today donated the last quarter's royalties and want to thank everyone who gets behind this and supports it.

Deirdre - A life on Coronation Street: a review

I have a collection of books based on Coronation Street, and at the end of last month another came through the letterbox.

But this is a special book. Not only is it written by our wonderful editor Glenda Young but it is also the first biography of a Corrie character - the soap icon Deirdre Hunt/Langton/Barlow/Rachid/Barlow.

I promised Glenda that I would do a review of the book, but I won't say much about the content because I don't want to ruin it for others who are yet to read it or are getting it for a Christmas present. 

The book has it all: brilliant photos, chronological storylines and features including Deirdre's men, jobs and fashions. But what else is brilliant is that includes fabulous quotes from the show from Deirdre and various other characters like Blanche, Ken and Rita. There are sometimes the script of famous Deirdre scenes like the love triangle in 1983 and her two-hander with Tracy in 2007.

What we see in this book is a wonderful character developing over 40 years - from cheeky dollybird in 1972 to the middle-aged matriarch of the Barlows who, if it wasn't for Anne Kirkbride's death, could have been a natural successor to Blanche.

There were even storylines that I wasn't aware of, and I thought I was a hard-core fan!

There's a quiz at the end and a list of her appearances which is sourced from the wonderful Corriepedia!

So I say go out and buy this wonderful book about a wonderful lady by a wonderful lady!

And let's hope this is the beginning of a biographical series. Rita next eh Glenda? Or Ken?

Listen: Radio interview about Corrie Deirdre book

BBC Radio Newcastle interviewed me this week to talk all things Coronation Street now that the  ITV official Deirdre Barlow tribute book has been published. 

The book has been hailed as a "must-have stocking filler for fans" and as a Christmas bestseller too.

Coronation Street facts and figures up for sale on eBay

A friend of mine has found this Coronation Street book of facts and figures while he was cleaning out his back room.  It doesn't look like an official publication and I wonder if anyone knows where it has come from and who Terry M is?

If you're interested in buying it, it's for sale on eBay now.

We won this as a Coronation St fan gathering whilst living in Canada.
This looks like either a Canadian fan-made publication or a Coronation St writer reference.

This Set is listed as Edition 1, Copy 55 and details the dates it was printed as "April 14 2005, 25 copies; April 20 2005, 25 copies, April 27 2005, 15 copies."

New Corrie book - Norman Bates with a Briefcase

Review: The Girl Who Just Appeared by Jonathan Harvey

Coronation Street writer Jonathan Harvey's first book, All She Wants, was really funny with a sharp, bitchy wit. His second book, The Confusion of Karen Carpenter, had lots of comedy but it was tinted with tragedy, too, but was also a good story. His new book, The Girl Who Just Appeared, is different again. but you couldn't call it a funny book. There is humour, but it's poignant and a bit sad in places and it's also a journey of discovery with a happy ending. All three books are sort of different, yet each tells a story of people finding out who they really are. It shows how talented Harvey is as a writer, not that I needed telling, I've long enjoyed his writing on Coronation Street.

This book begins as Holly Smith has just buried her mother and, now both of her parents are gone, she has decided to try to find out about her birth mother. She was told that she was adopted when she was a child and even then, she knew that must be the reason why she never connected with her family, though she loved them. All she knows is that she was born in Liverpool and adopted at a few months of age. She has an address of a flat where her mother lived but that's all she knows. When the flat comes up for rent, Holly decides to move to Liverpool to see what she can find out about her past. Yep, it's more coincidental than a coincidental thing but you need some sort of catalyst, don't you?

In the flat, Holly discovers a diary and some letters that belonged to a teenage boy called Darren, dated between 1981 and 1982. Darren's mother was a prostitute and he and his younger brother have had a tough life. We hear some of Darren's story, told through his diary, and it's tough to read sometimes as his life often seems hopeless. He never did well in school and his spelling and writing makes it evident why. As she reads the diary, Holly is drawn in to Darren's story and is sure he has a connection to her past, along with her landlords, Rose and Alan. Rose may know more than she's saying as well but Holly won't find out if she doesn't push a little.

It's difficult to say too much without giving away the story. I kind of guessed one of the twists but not quite in the way it ended up. This is a story about longing, needing to fit in and how Holly and Darren discover ways that they can do just that in order to be happy. I really liked the book as much as the first two. That's three for three so far. I definitely look forward to future books by Jonathan Harvey.

Watch Jonathan Harvey on Book Break

There is an online book show series called Book Break on Studiotalk.tv and this month's show features Jonathan Harvey, who is a Coronation Street writer and author. We've already blogged about his new book that's being released this summer, The Girl Who Just Appeared, and he's going to be on Book Break to talk about it.

Jonathan Harvey’s The Girl Who Just Appeared is a poignant, funny read which follows Holly (who was adopted as an infant) in the present day and Darren (who is negotiating life with his errant mother and the younger brother he is bringing up) in 1981. Flitting between the present and the past we gradually discover how Darren and Holly’s lives become intertwined.

They are joined by new novelist, Jessie Burton. The episode airs online tomorrow, Friday, July 4,  at 12:30 pm (British Summer Time) here. You can also watch it on YouTube on the Pan MacMillan Books YouTube channel.

Roy and Hayley's diary - a new, unofficial Coronation Street book

Flaming Nora!  I've had a week unlike any other of my life.  This was the week when my first book was launched.

The book is "A Perfect Duet. The Diary of Roy and Hayley Cropper". With a foreword by Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper).  It is an unofficial Coronation Street companion.

My publisher (I've always wanted to say that) keeps me updated with Amazon rankings and this week the book jumped in immediately at Number 18 in Books - Fiction - Biographical Fiction.

Book Review: The Rovers Return Companion

Tim Randall's new book, The Rovers Return: The Official Coronation Street Companion, is available now. I have just finished reading this lovely book and thought you might all like to hear about it.

The hardback cover is designed to look like an older book, with discoloured and frayed edges.  The content, however, sparkles!

The Rovers Return Inn is the heart of the long running British television show, Coronation Street. Since December 1960, the pub has been the center of action and the gathering place for the neighbours. Births, deaths, anniversaries and marraiges have been performed, celebrated and/or commemorated here. There have been disasters and triumphs, parties and drama and plenty of pints poured over the heads of those who misstep.

Tim Randall's book gives us the run down on the highlights of the pub since the beginning of the show including a potted history of all the licensees, barmaids and pot men. He tells us about the disasters, including both fires and a crash into the front of the pub by a truck (lorry) load of wood. We hear about babies born under the roof of the pub, deaths on site and some of the many marraiges celebrated. There are fancy dress parties, and pint dousing drama.

The book is full of facts and stories and lots and lots of great photos! Very much worth buying if you're a Coronation Street fan. I don't know if you'd get the photos in the Kindle edition so I would definitely recommend the hardback.
