Corrie Press Day (PART 7) - Sally Metcalfe arrested!!

Welcome to interview N0. 7 from my visit to the Coronation Street set, and my day caught in a flurry of exclusive summer storyline interviews.

The last of my press interviews is saved for a Corrie legend. Being in the presence of Sally Dynevor (AKA Metcalfe, Webster) is a real treat and felt like an absolute dream. Back in June when I attended this press day event, Jack Webster’s sepsis storyline was a mere tabloid rumour, and 'spoiler alerts' had only just started being printed. Fast-forward 6 weeks, and following the partial removal of Jacks' leg (how good was that CGI!!), that storyline is now running alongside Sally’s council funding fraud fracas. Its almost poetic justice then, when Sally gets arrested next week, at a charity fundraiser, for young Jacks rehabilitation!

Q: Do we need to dig out our Free the Weatherfield One t-shirt?

"You definitely do. I need all the support I can get at the moment!" enthuses Sally.

“It’s a great story, I’m really enjoying it. It’s fantastic. We’ve got Nick Gleaves who’s playing Duncan and a little bit of comedy and a sad story, when Sally desperately tries to do something good for society” Sally continues “We put on this big event and we get everyone to come along and Sally’s dressed as a clown with big red nose and red cheeks- which I’ve had to walk around the building in for the last three weeks” she laughs “Tim’s a strongman, Gina’s a bearded lady and Yasmeen is a snake charmer – and of course, that’s when she’s (Sally) arrested. All of a sudden, a policeman walks in and she’s like ‘oh, he might be coming to help’ and then he arrests her. She’s shocked, she doesn’t understand what’s going on”

Q: Do you think she’s been naive and a bit gullible, or do you feel sorry for her?

“A bit of both.  To be given this power, to give a charity £40,000, on a girl really who’s just stitched knickers for the last few years is amazing. So, she has been naïve but she has been trying to do something good. I know she says ‘I’m snooty and pretentious and nobody likes me’ but in actual fact, I think she’s trying to do her best and she’s trying to be a good person so she has been very, very naive”

Q: Does Duncan specifically target Sally? Does he have a grudge against her?

“She’s just collateral damage, he was just an opportunist”

Q: She’s so trusting. Do you ever feel like you want to shake her?

“There are times when I feel she’s quite wise. I did a scene with Joe (Duttine – Tim Metcalfe) today and it’s all about him not trusting me and she suddenly becomes incredibly strong when she really needs to be. I like the fact that she’s an innocent sometimes and I like it when she knows she’s right, she can be really strong”

Q: How do you think Sally would cope if she ended up in jail? Would she crumble?

“For Sally that would be the worst thing, not only losing the privileges, being locked away in a room without your family and all of those things but just the shame of it. I think that would be horrible for Sally. The fact that everyone on Coronation Street knows she’s gone to prison – oh my God! She wouldn’t be able to walk down Coronation Street with her head held high, that’s for sure and she’ll get really ribbed in Underworld”

Q: What’s kept you on the cobbles all this time?

“Great stories, it’s like a family. I’ve been here 32 years. I can’t imagine not being here. It’s the best job in the world in so many different ways, great writing, funny and sad and it’s just a brilliant place to work and as an actor. When you’re picking up your scripts and you can’t wait for the next one it is so thrilling and I’d never get that anywhere else” she jokingly adds “ And I live 20 minutes down the road, that’s another good reason!”

Will Sally Metcalfe end up in jail? Is Tim’s incarceration also on the cards? Will Duncan get away with the crime? What do you think? Let us know in the comments section...

Huge thanks to our editor Glenda Young for letting me loose in Weatherfield!.A surreal, privileged, and on the whole, amazing experience.

Also, big thanks to Alison and all of the ITV Corrie PR team, for looking after me on the day.

CORRIE PRESS DAY (PART 5) - The return of Claudia Colby!

Welcome to interview No. 5 of my visit to the Coronation Street set, and my day caught in a flurry of exclusive summer storyline interviews.

In my opinion, this is one of Corrie’s most ingenious castings of recent years. So, not only am I sat effectively ‘backstage’ in the Corrie Hub ON SET no less, but we are now about to embark in a chat with Weatherfield crimper, Audrey’s frenemy, and possibly Maria’s new boss; it's TV legend Rula Lenska AKA Claudia Colby. The latter surname is undoubtedly a DALLAS reference? It could be - and I can tell you one thing, with the huge hairdo and classic glamour, she could well be from a Hollywood era. So, from 'tinsel town' to downtown Weatherfield, let's get the lowdown on the return of Claudia!

What brings Claudia back to the cobbles?

“Well basically, it’s the battle of the hairdressers. She’s now suddenly flying quite high and poaches Maria because she’s got several new franchises opening, and of course the return of Lewis Archer.’

Can you confirm how long you’re returning for, is it a long-term stint?

"Yes it is long term, it was an added bonus, after all that time away. When people stop me on the street, they ask when I’m returning to Corrie as it's such an unusual relationship (between Audrey and Claudia). You’ve two older women who like each other, but try and get the upper hand on each other. I honestly am thrilled to be back.”

Did you slip back into the role quite easily, or did you have to go back and watch yourself in previous episodes?

“No, the relationship between Sue (Nicholls) and I is good anyway and on the first day we just really gelled. Although we weren’t given many lines as such, the relationship was already sparkling.”

Can you tell us about your first scene returning as Claudia?

“Basically, Audrey is in the salon telling a customer about Maria been thrown out, and I then I arrive. Somebody says to Claudia ‘are you a customer?’ as she arrives to see Audrey in the back room.
The script advises that Claudia arrives in all her splendour!"

An apt script note indeed for an esteemed actress of stage, screen, film… and our Corrie.

When I was sat in the Coronation Street reception area, prior to any interviews, I was starstruck as Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts) gleefully strolled in. Later that day, meeting Samia (Maria), and then Rula (Claudia), I envisaged strolling down Coronation Street heading to the salon, for a quick trim.

One question remains though. Just who will rule the roost in the battle of the Corrie Hairdressers?

Coronation Street Episode Review; Thursday 21st of June 2018 8.00pm

Welcome to the Coronation Street blog review of Thursday's hour-long episode

In amongst all this 'World Cup' football malarkey, it's nice to sit down and enjoy an hour of real drama, with no VAR* required (*nope.... me neither).

The course of young romance never did run smoothly on Coronation Street. Bethany reluctantly plays the reassuring BFF to a nervous Craig as his date with 'Speed Daal' waitress Kayla, approaches.

With the date now all arranged, has Cupid fired an arrow for the copper-haired 'copper'?.

The fall-out from Toyah and Eva's lies cause clashes between the Connor and Barlow/Battersby clans. Johnny wants a child arrangement order but Jenny isn't keen. Johnny sees a solicitor, demands a DNA test on baby Susie, and Eva is struggling to cope.

With Michelle and Kate firing venomous diatribe at the Battersby sisters, it looks like becoming an all-out cobbles war. Can Johnny and Jenny's marriage survive?

At the salon. Maria is left in charge as Audrey goes for lunch with a retired colleague. With Maria making management decisions, Emma's ditzy dithering gives her an idea. However, a sozzled Audrey has no retirement plans and decides to put Maria's rent up instead. Charming!.

At the factory, Alya introduces Sarah as her new PA. The girls aren't happy though as the job should have been advertised. Will her flurry of bad jobs for Sarah put the rest of the girls off of applying?.

Before the date, Kayla makes a swift trip to HMP Weatherfield. It appears she's visiting her Dad, who is, in fact, Neil Clifton, who sexually assaulted Bethany!!. Having sold his daughter a web of lies,  Kayla then launches a campaign to interrogate Craig and implicate Bethany.

It appears that cupid hasn't fired any arrows for Craig, it is more like a smoking gun...

Anyway, that's me done for another week.

By the time you read this, it will be Friday and another hour of Corrie is due tonight. GOAL!!.

Maybe football does have its benefits, after all!

Until next time Corrie fans...

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 06th of June 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog and the first of tonight's two-episode blog reviews.

Roy is all psyched up and disguised in preparation to bring down faux 'mystic meg', Rosemary.

Angered by Rosemary's sullying of Hayley's memory, Roy decides to head on down to her latest psychic event, with Cathy, in tow. Feeling randy (James Randi, that is) will Roy's sceptic theory prove Rosemary to in fact be a 'smooth criminal', and will her real accomplice be discovered?.

I think Gail's 'curse' may well continue...

Drug-busting cocaine heroin(e) Rosie Webster is reaping the accolades following the collapse of Antoine's fashion shoot crime capers. With ITV giving a Sally a call (fourth wall broken) she informs Rosie that 'Phil and Holly' of the TV show 'This Morning' want to interview her!!

At the hospital, Nicola and Eileen are both seeking positive futures following Phelan's downfall. With Gary remaining adamant that he wants to be a part of baby Zach's life, will Nicola even want to stay in Weatherfield?.

In other news... Kirk goes clothes shopping with Sharon, Steve gives life lessons to baby Zach, and Cathy has some memorable advice; 'Mobility scooters and Zebra crossings, don't mix!'.

A hilarious first episode tonight. Post-Phelan's revenge, I'm feeling rather positive (although Eileen and Liz identifying his body did make me feel slightly bereft).

Anyway, that's me done for another week.
