Coronation Street's Jimmi Harkishin wins Asian Media Award

Coronation Street actor Jimni Harkishin, who plays Dev Alahan, was presented with an award at the first ever Asian Media Awards 2013.

Jimmi was presented with The Sophiya Haque Services to British Television Award.

Jimmi told the Manchester Evening News: "I feel really privileged and honoured to have been awarded the Sophiya Haque Award for Services to British Television. When you win an award like this it means you really must be getting on a bit!"

The award was named in honour of actress Sophiya Haque who played Poppy Morales in Coronation Street.  Sophiya passed away earlier this year of cancer, aged 41.

Actress who played Rovers Return barmaid dies, age 41

Actress Sophiya Haque, who played Rovers Return barmaid Poppy Morales on Coronation Street, has died earlier today. She was just 41 years old. Sophiya fell ill before Christmas and was told just days ago she had cancer.

While undergoing tests, Ms Haque, developed a clot on her lungs and died this morning.

Her agent Oliver Thomson broke down in tears today as he told of his shock at losing “such a wonderful friend”.

He said: “Sophiya was a wonderful actress, a wonderful client but so much more than that a wonderful friend. She was adored by everyone she worked with and will be deeply missed.”

She was currently performing the role of Sylvia in Privates on Parade for the Michael Grandage Company.

Bollywood Beauty to be next Corrie barmaid

The next barmaid to start work at the Rovers Return in Coronation Street will be Bollywood actress Sophiya Haque. She's already started filming her scenes as Poppy.

Rovers manager Liz McDonald is going to find herself at odds with barmaid Michelle Connor when she appoints newcomer Poppy over her to be assistant manager of the pub. Sounds fun to me.
