Sharon's Secret Is Out! Corrie Blog Press Day Interview with Tracie Bennett

1980’s Coronation Street is ripe with characters that I would love to see make a return to the cobbles. However brief, and even just for an episode or two, I adore the nostalgia that gets inserted into the modern-day Weatherfield. Could you imagine if Curly revisited the cobbles, Terry Duckworth taking Tyrone for a pint, or like when we had Fiona Middleton’s (Emma’s Mum) recent brief stint? I could go on (insert your ideas if you wish). The most successful and most recent character reprisal has to be Jenny Bradley. Memories of that iconic wig for Jack Webster's kidnap are long faded, as Jenny is our now iconic Rovers Return landlady and has long since been close with Rita again.

With Rita in mind, I was elated when Corrie announced the return of Rita’s original foster daughter; Sharon Gaskell. As I wasn't born until 1981, I only have youtube as a reference for her original tenure but I can remember 1999 quite well when Sharon nearly sold the Kabin from right under Reet's feet. Sharon then married a man called Ian Bentley and never graced Weatherfield again - until now that is! Actress Tracie Bennett has since gone on to win critical acclaim and awards as a broadway musical theatre star, so when the email came from Coronation Street Blog to attend an online press day to interview this stellar star of stage and screen - I couldn't resist!

Lockdown has caused many problems but I've been spoiled rotten attending these online press days!

The zoom session was pencilled in for 30 minutes but Tracie is the consummate professional and talked for an hour. Tracie came across as being so warm, very genuine, and has those dulcet northern tones that I love! Having been on set since 5 am, the 12-noon interview did not stop Tracie from giving us some juicy Corrie chat!

Keen to find out what Sharon’s return is all about, let's take it back to April 14th where we had a chat with Tracie to find out what's coming up on the cobbles;

TB - (Tracie Bennett)  Q - (question)

Q When were you first approached about coming back? Is this the first time you've been asked or approached in the past?

TB  I’ve been approached a few times but they don't know if you're available. If I’m booked to do a show for 2 years, it's complete No as I can't get out of it, which they seem fine with. This time, I think they’d got the idea and had a look at my availability. Early machinations would have been about 16 - 18 months ago and they had a few storylines ready but were wondering where to go with it, and then pandemic hit! When September 2020 came, we decided to proceed from March 2021. A sad storyline was broached but with the covid-19 they decided against that. Whether that part of the story still goes ahead - I don't know!

Q Were you nervous about reprising the role after such a long time and did you watch any old footage to get a feel of Sharon’s character?

TB  I didn't go back and watch, I tried to remember the essence of her. There were some big storylines in the past. I've been in and out since 1982, then 1999. Sharon is 5 years younger than me. The essence is, she’s gobby, impulsive, and has a good heart but she didn't mean to be horrible. She was young enough and daft enough to get away with it, but not at that age now. It's like keeping the core of her, but not knowing where the storyline will go now. The impulsiveness is still there though. She hides under the veneer, and she’s hiding for her nephew now. Technically, it's quite a challenge now but I still skip to work!

Q What is it that makes you want to return as Sharon and revisit the character?

TB The storyline! I was told, it was dark and I wondered. You are interested in the flaws of a human being, under pressure, family related, guilt and duty - my acting chops needed to come back! They wanted to give me a good storyline, a big story, and that's what I wanted.

Q Can you talk to us about what Sharon has been up to and what has brought her back to Weatherfield?

TB  Sharon was a foster child originally. We then find out she’s got brothers called Wayne, Darren and Gary. Sharon got cancer and Wayne looked after her very well and felt she owed him. He then died and left his business to Sharon. However, Wayne’s son Harvey takes advantage of her because of this favour owed. Harvey emotionally blackmails Sharon into helping him find Leanne. Sharon also owes Rita a lot of money after selling the Kabin. She does have some guilt about deceiving her again and feels that remorse

Q What new friendships and connections can we expect from Sharon’s return and has she met her match with Jenny?

TB  A little bit but Sharon plays her like cat and mouse. Sharon comes in harmless but has seemingly met her match. Sharon can put her down quite quickly but has those layers of veneers we talked about, it can get very complex

Q Sharon also has some history with Leanne?

TB Yes, although originally I didn't remember it being that bad. I had a chat with Helen Worth (Gail Platt) working out the dates and discussing past storylines. I didn't realise she had a bad history with Leanne, but I remember it now

Q What has it been like working with those original cast members like Helen, again?

TB Like that (clicks fingers) I've seen Helen a few times out and about. I've known Jimmi (Dev Alahan) for a long time and I knew him before he got on the show. Barbara and I bowed at each other when we first met again! I've not met the others yet as there’s a limited number of people on set at the moment due to Covid.

Q What was it like walking onto the new set for the first time?

TB Less emotional than it would have been, had it been at Granada studios. Corrie was a jump start for me, I wouldn't be working now if it wasn't for that. It was like a little rep company at the start, I went through so much development from 1982 -84. I was glad it’s all brand new, it was 22 years ago and I can make new memories and start again, almost. Just a few connections now to the old school, so it all feels brand new. Number 7 Coronation street is still there- which Sharon helped build!

Q What did you learn from originally working on Coronation Street. What were you taught from working with such legends as Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) and Jean Alexander (Hilda Ogden)?

TB Well, in those days it was concentration, but we did have rehearsals back then. They never marked the floor, it was like working in a play - very much theatre-based, almost. They were good to me. We would have a group Wednesday in the green room where all the women would get together. Me, Julie (Goodyear, Bet Lynch) Pat, Jean, Barbara (Knox, Rita Tanner) - would get together and Barbara would go off, but Anne (Kirkbride, Deirdre Barlow) would be there. We’d all chat and you know, these were strong northern women. At first, I used to think, well, why would they want me there, to join this group. You used to know them as their characters' names from watching the show for 20 odd years but then you’d get used to it. Pat (Elsie Tanner) would always say ‘Always dress effeminate, as a superstar, even when you come into work. You can always wear stockings and suspenders under those dungarees - and always wear a bit of scent’

Q What is your first love - theatre or television?

TB I can't decide I love both. When in theatre you're an athlete almost with what you eat and the strict routine. I do like that though, and it does work when you stick to the diet and the regime. When you don't have a matinee on Sunday you can have a blowout, but I'm used to the hard work and that's fine. If you're lazy, it would be much harder but I was brought up to work hard

Q Is there anything Sharon won't do when trying to track down Leanne and Nick for Harvey?

TB There’s kind of a limit coming when she cuts Harvey down a bit but eventually, she gets a bit terrified when she realises Harvey is a bit of a psycho. I have to play the part ambiguous to do all these different levels of deception. How far will Harvey go? There is a death threat and Sharon then questions her morality. She could end up going to prison for something but then realises the serious ramifications. Watch this space!

As I say, I love it when Corrie reprises these characters from the show's illustrious 60-year history. Time means that we can’t bring many characters back, but my word, Tracie Bennett would have been high on my list!

Sharon Bentley Returns... But Who Is She?

Tonight’s Coronation Street sees the return of Rita’s original foster daughter Sharon Bentley, played by award-winning broadway star and actress Tracie Bennett. A character that debuted in 1982, Sharon may not be familiar to us younger Corrie fans, so here is a quick catch-up ahead of this Wednesday night’s Corrie!

Who is Sharon Bentley nee Gaskell?

  • Originally introduced as Rita’s foster daughter (with Len Fairclough) Tracie made 173 appearances as Sharon Gaskell in 1982, 1983-84, returning in 1999.

  • In 1982 Sharon made a play for Brian Tilsley (Nick’s Dad) and lied to Gail that they were having an affair, before leaving to work at a dog kennels in Sheffield. Random! Returning briefly in 1983, Sharon caught the eye of Curly Watts but dumped him for his mate Terry Duckworth!

  • In 1999 she came back to invite Rita to her wedding to Ian Bentley, who she subsequently dumped at the alter - exposing his affair with Natalie Barnes. Happy that Sharon decided to stay around after the wedding fiasco, Rita offered Sharon a job at The Kabin. Sharon happily accepted, although she soon clashed with Rita's assistant, Leanne Battersby. Much to Leanne's horror, and that of a few of Rita's other friends, Rita offered The Kabin to Sharon as a birthday gift. Rita admitted to Sharon that she offered her the business as she was lonely.

  • After an ill-fated romance with Danny Hargreaves (Sally Metcalf’s Ex) and a suicide attempt, Sharon got back in touch with ex-fiance Ian Bentley, and much to Rita’s dismay she put the Kabin up for sale to purchase a house with Ian in Bolton. Rita bought the Kabin back off Sharon and sent her packing.

So, after a 22-year hiatus, Sharon Bentley returns to the Cobbles. In the meantime actress Tracie Bennett who plays her, has become one of the theatre world’s foremost leading ladies, winning two Olivier Awards for roles in West End productions and was nominated for a Tony Award for her portrayal of Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow on Broadway. Other musical theatre roles include Les Miserable and Hairspray. She recently played Carlotta in the National Theatre production of Follies and starred in the revival of Mame at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre where she is patron. Television work includes acclaimed ITV dramas Scott and Bailey and The Bay

What’s to come?

Well, Sharon does have some history on the street and our Reet has a harem of unofficial foster daughters, in the shape of fiery Jenny Bradley, and loudmouth, Gemma Winter. From clips that I’ve seen, (and vaguely remembering her 1999 return) I think she was quite a feisty one and a bit of a trouble causer. Will Sharon face-off against Gemma and Jenny? I’d reckon so and I’m sure Rita will give us a classic ‘ now listen lady...’ speech in the next few episodes!

PS - If you get a chance, jump on youtube and type in 'End of The Raindow', Tracie Bennet is uncanny as Judy Garland - Brilliant!!

Another Olivier Nomination For Sharon Gaskell

The nominations for the Olivier Awards, Britain's highest theatrical honours, were announced yesterday.  Among the nominees was a name familiar to Corrie fans.  Tracie Bennett, best known in Weatherfield as Rita's foster daughter Sharon Gaskell, has been nominated as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in Follies.

Tracie played Sharon on the show in two stints.  She was a tomboy fostered by Len and Rita in 1982, helping out at the builder's yard, before developing a crush on Brian Tilsley.  Even though he was married with a child, she pursued him, and then claimed that they were in love.  It lead to a falling out with Rita, and she took a job in Sheffield to get over Brian, returning briefly after Len's death.

In 1999 she came back to Weatherfield with a fiance, Ian.  He had an affair with Natalie Barnes, though, so she jilted him at the altar.  To support the newly single Sharon, Rita gave her the Kabin for her birthday;  however, after a disastrous relationship with Danny Hargreaves that saw her contemplate suicide, she reconciled with Ian and left town.  A heartbroken Rita bought the shop back off her, and they haven't spoken since.

Tracie is, of course, no stranger to the Oliviers - this is her sixth nominationShe's been nominated twice for Best Actress, and an incredible four times as Best Supporting Actress, winning twice in 1995 and 2008.  She's also appeared in a wide variety of other films and TV shows, including two (in my opinion) criminally underrated 1990s sitcoms, Joking Apart and Next of Kin.

The 2018 Olivier Awards, hosted by Catherine Tate, are presented at the Royal Albert Hall on the 8th April.

My favourite Coronation Street scene, ever

This is my favourite Coronation Street scene, ever.  It was after Sharon Gaskell had jilted Ian Bentley at the altar on their wedding day. She'd found he'd been having an affair with that well-known husband-pincher (and at the time, a grieving widow) Natalie Barnes.

Sharon stormed out of the church before she could say 'I do' to Ian, ran down the aisle and out into the frosty cold air. She found her way back to the Rovers to yell and scream at Natalie 'You've ruined my life!' before Betty tried to console with her with a brandy. But Sharon wouldn't be consoled, and Sally shepherded her out of the Rovers and away from Natalie, the woman who had caused her so much pain when she had her fling with Kevin years before.

The reason I'm posting this today is that I've just found the scene on an old episode of Corrie that I was watching. It's from March 1999 and the scene where Sally and Sharon emerge from the Rovers, I remember at the time, was one that had me in tears. It was the beauty of the shot, the two women united in their hatred for harlot Natalie, Sharon in her wedding dress and veil, and the snow falling softly, adding a freezing cold edge to an already bitter day.

When I found the scene today, it brought the beauty of it all back and I knew I had to rewind it and pause, take it all in again, and then here I am sharing it with you now too.

If there is one screen-grab that sums up your favourite Coronation Street scene, do please email it in with a few paragraphs about what makes it so special to you. I'd love to hear all about it.  And now, I think I'm going to console myself with a brandy.

How to spot a good Corrie actor

Last night we went to the theatre to see Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland in End of the Rainbow and, well, I was absolutely blown away by her performance. The acting, singing and energy of the show which was primarily a one-woman show, was incredible. It's one of those shows that's going to stay with me for a very long time.

Tracie, for those older Coronation Street fans who'll remember, played Sharon Gaskell on Corrie.  Sharon was a fragile soul, engaged to be married to a bloke called Ian who had an affair with Natalie Horrocks and one of the most mesmerising scenes on Corrie was Sharon in her wedding dress bawling her eyes out on the cobbles after she ran out of her winter wedding, snow falling around her.  Tracie seemed to take that vulnerability and fragility of Sharon a little and you could see glimpses of it last night in the way she portrayed Judy Garland too.  There was also a lot of Elsie Tanner-like feistiness and physical resemblance in the way she played Judy Garland and we wondered why Tracie hadn't been considered (or maybe she had?) for the role of Elsie in The Road to Coronation Street.

Anyway, in the interval, Sunny Jim and I discussed how, very often, we only ever appreciate how good an actor actually is when we see them away from our favourite soap.  For instance, I never knew what a comedy talent Bev Callard was until I saw her in Two Pints of Lager and realised there was a lot more to her acting talents than being Liz McDonald. Until TV actors are there, on stage, live and up close and personal, you never really get that feeling of how good they actually are, what they're capable of. When we watch Corrie actors on Coronation Street five times a week, we become too comfortable with their characters, I think, and often fail to see the person behind the character, knowing that they're capable of acting their Corrie socks off if only the writers and powers that be would let them.

Anyway, I haven't enjoyed a theatre show like this in a very, very long time.

Check out the website here as the show's on UK tour.

50 Years Of Corrie In 50 Days – 1982

Day 22 of our 50 day countdown of Coronation Street - written by blogger Sunny Jim.

In 1981 work had begun on the building of a new outdoor set, which was opened by the Queen in May 1982. The previous one on Grape Street was starting to fall to bits and was unpopular among the cast due to its distance from the studio. The opportunity was taken to rebuild no. 7 which had collapsed in 1965 and provide a much more modern house which included central heating for the first time on Coronation Street. Len Fairclough had bought the plot of land and built the new house, though all the building took place off screen. He had initially intended to sell it but once it was finished, Rita liked it so much that they moved in and sold no. 9 to Chalkie Whitely.

Also a ginnel was built between No. 1 and the Rovers to put an end to letters from viewers complaining that every time anyone went to the toilet in the pub, they would actually end up in Albert Tatlock’s. Perhaps that’s why he was always so grumpy. 49,000 bricks and 6,500 roofing slates were reclaimed from Salford streets to give the set the right period look and at last the cobbles on the road would be running in the right direction.
The Faircloughs had started fostering the year before but in 1982 their relatively quiet lives were turned upside down by the arrival of 16 year old tomboy, Sharon Gaskell. She wasn’t happy working in the Kabin all day with Rita and Mavis so ended up helping Len with the building of no. 7. All was happy with the family until Sharon clapped her eyes on Brian Tilsley. She started babysitting for the Tilsley’s and threw herself at Brian, who, flattered by the attention and a little drunk, responded. It all ended in tears and raised voices when Gail found out and told Rita. Embarrassed to remain living near Brian, when she was offered a job as a kennel maid in Sheffield she took it and moved away.

Also in 1982: Jack Duckworth and Bet Lynch have a fling; Betty attacked; Hilda Ogden starts cleaning for Dr Lowther; Phyllis Pearce makes her first appearance; Brian Tilsley goes to Qatar to work; Mike Baldwin gets Maggie Dunlop pregnant but she marries Harry Redman; Slim Jim meets Stardust Lil; Mavis Riley meets Victor Pendlebury; Harry the budgie lays an egg.

Fireworks in The Kabin

Back in 1973  Mark Hillkirk was injured after a spark from the bonfire on the Red Rec landed in a box of open fireworks. Since then Rita has refused to sell them. She had a huge row about it with Sharon Gaskell many years later and Sharon told her that as the Kabin now belonged to her, she'd sell whatever she liked. It looks like now the Kabin is Norris's, then he'll sell whatever he likes too but I can't believe Rita would have been so happy to sell those fireworks to Peter tonight.

I'll get my anorak.
