Out with the old Rovers

In the next few days we will be saying farewell to the current Rovers Return, though it has had a few minor changes over the years, it has stayed mostly the same.

There was those few months in 2008 when the Rovers Return did look quite different to its current look, though later that year the decor returned to a similar style to that of the 1985 Rovers.

When the Rovers reopens later this year, I'm thinking it will probably be a similar style to the current Rovers, but there is a few things that will be long gone. For me, the biggest difference in the Rovers will end up being the separating glass between the booths.

For years they have been the backdrop to many whisperings and secrets, some of my earliest memories of the show are of characters talking between them. There is one thing that I do hope remains the same though, I hope they place another portrait of Betty in the new Rovers, as they did in the old, perhaps a bigger one, and one that doesn't say "landlady" would be preferable.

Who would you like to see do a Terry Duckworth?

I will warn you from the off, this blog is not going to be terribly politically correct, and is probably all the better for that. If you are in any way squeamish, please do look away now.

As we are all getting excited amidst the build up to Rovers Fire: The Next Generation, I decided to watch again the benchmark in Rovers Return dramas - the original fire from 1986. One thing struck me that I'd previously forgotten about, although I don't know why. Young Terry Duckworth is almost something of a hero. Tearing about, helping neighbours and looking out for his mate, Kev. What I also noticed was that for the vast majority of the episode, our Terry runs about in nowt but a pair of jogging bottoms. I'm sure that was a treat for the audience of the day!

This made me wonder who we'd all like to replicate this dynamic performance in 2013. Rather than bring Terry back for a repeat performance (let's just not go there!) I thought it would be a good idea to look at the possible contenders and see who's the most popular. Given that there will be a strip show taking place in the run up to the fire, it seemed like common sense to me!

The obvious choice would be young Tommy Duckworth, following in his father's notorious footsteps. Or would you rather see the lovely Dr Matt running down the cobbles with his stethoscope a-dangle? It's a pity Tyrone is currently banged up as a guest of Her Majesty, but there's always that gruesome twosome, Rob Donovan and Ryan Connor to light up your evening! Or there's always old Nicky Tilsley, minus his 90's abdominal muscles?

Of course there is a very obvious contender I've left out: our Norris Cole. I'm sure that's a spectacle that would make all Mary Taylor's dreams come true at once!

So let's have your favourite, all in the name of fun of course! ;)

Who will be the second person to die in the Rovers Return fire?

The pictures are in, the press release is doing the rounds, and we all know by now that next week Coronation Street goes up in flames as the Rovers Return sets on fire and Sunita will die.

But who will the other person be who dies in the flames?

ITV have already confirmed that more than one person will die in the Rovers Return fire and that it won't be a regular character.

So who will it be?

I'm wondering if this Toni woman that's just come in from the fire station will be the one to snuff it?

We know it can't be Paul, Stella or Karl because we've seen paparazzi pictures of all three of those either at Sunita's funeral or in an upcoming storyline.  And Corrie would never kill off one of their main attractions like Tina, Jason or heaven forbid, Rita.  So who will it be?  What do you think?

Regurgitation Street

Do you ever feel like you've been somewhere before? I had a strange dream last night that Coronation Street had run out of storylines so the powers that be simply took all the old scripts out of the archives, added a few references to the credit crunch and One Direction, spruced it up with some product placement and trotted it out to the poor viewers.

What a horrible nightmare. Sadly, though it seems to be coming true. Ah yes, a fire at the Rovers Return! What a great way to celebrate the arrival of Spring. Gail and Sally can sit on the cobbles and toast their marshmallows while St Ella hides under a pile of manmade fibres with that bloke who used to be the totty in Taggart.

I can just see young Philip Collinson sitting in his office, stroking his white cat, sipping his Aqua Libra (ooops, more product placement) and wondering just how he can sign off his triumphant reign at the top of ITV's flagship soap. Perhaps he was watching Celebrity Big Brother at the time and caught a glimpse of Julie Goodyear, poor thing.

"Get it! Got it! Good!" he cried, and dug out his 1980s Coronation box set. Two and a half minutes later and the episode was written and ready.

One question remained though and that troubled him. Who could star in this Towering Inferno? It would have to be someone who hasn't had enough screen time of late. Suddenly he knew who it had to be. St Ella of the Back Room! But of course. Coronation Street fans' favourite. Young Philip knew it had to be St Ella - it would firm up her rightful position in the Best Actress category at the 2013 British Soap Awards. It was all coming together nicely...

...Oh, how I wish this was far from the truth and just a bit of a laugh, but sadly I'm not so sure. It really does pain me to say it but I'm really disappointed at the prospect of another Rovers fire. If you haven't seen the first one back in 1986, do track it down. It was well written, expertly handled and felt completely real, and a tad scary. It showed a community pulling together. I'll always remember those first few quiet moments as we saw images of a sleepy back street Weatherfield - it was haunting, hard-hitting and it worked. So why the need to rehash it in 2013?

I'm also annoyed that this is the way we will say goodbye to a lovely character and indeed, a lovely actress in Shobna Gulati. Sunita coming back was probably a mistake - they have mucked about with her character and given her nowhere else to go. I just wish her leaving didn't involve a cheap ratings ploy with her being burnt to a crisp.

I know television ratings are of paramount importance these days and stunts like this are apparently necessary in making sure Corrie maintains it's share. However as far as I can see  it is all a bit cheap, blatant and unnecessary.

How's that for a legacy, Mr Collinson?

Rovers fire, pictures released

I know you've all been on the edge of your seats waiting to be gripped by this news, so at long last, here it is: the big press release about the fire that's about to sweep through the Rovers. Not only that but lots of fab pictures too.

"This is the dramatic moment when Britain’s most famous pub goes up in flames - with two people trapped inside!

As these pictures of the inferno show, the fire inside the Rovers Return quickly takes hold whilst stunned Coronation Street residents watch in horror.

Flames billow out of the windows as a desperate Stella Price screams for help upstairs and Sunita Alahan lies unconscious in the basement.

The fire takes hold on March 18th as the street residents gather in Nick’s Bistro for a ‘Full Monty’ charity strip show. Just as the boys are about the strip to the bare essentials Norris rushes into the Bistro to alert everyone to the fire.

But who is responsible for the blaze which will eventually claim two lives?

The action packed episodes took three weeks to film and involved stunt doubles, a special effects team and specialist fire crews.

By the end of the week the iconic Rovers Return is a burnt out shell leaving friends and neighbours to try and come to terms with the shocking events.

And in the coming weeks shock turns to anger as it becomes clear that the fire was arson with Sunita Alahan as the number one suspect!

For actress Shobna Gulati the Rovers fire also heralds the end of her time on Coronation Street. She said: “It’s an amazing send off. It feels great and I feel so pleased. The Rovers itself burning was hard to watch. When you watched the inside burning there was Betty’s picture in flames, along with all those memories. Sunita was a barmaid there too so she had an inside out relationship with the pub. I had a stunt lady there to do any scenes I didn’t want to do, but when it came to it I just thought this is the last time viewers are going to see me as Sunita, so you might as well see my face and not the back of the stunt double!

“When I finished filming the fire I cried. I thought how awful it must be to actually be in that kind of disaster. It must be horrific because the heat was horrendous. I could feel the burn. You could actually feel your skin burning. I had a bucket of cold water for me to cool down in because I was that hot; hot beyond belief.”

Michelle Collins who plays Stella Price also found filming the fire scenes very dramatic. She said: ”Stella’s left the Bistro quite upset after the palava with Sunita and goes home. She just wants to relax and de-stress so she goes back to the Rovers for a nice bath. The lights go out first of all before she starts to see and smell smoke. At this point she doesn’t realise anyone else is in there and she thinks she’s the only one trapped indoors. Obviously she thinks everyone’s in the Bistro and that nobody will come to rescue her. At that point I think she genuinely believes she’s going to die. She tries to open the window, and it’s jammed and she can’t get down the stairs either.

“It was quite frightening. I didn’t think it would be as scary as it actually was! To be honest with you I tried not to think about it, which was a good idea. I spent my time talking to the special effects team instead. I did feel very protected by everyone there. There were lots of firemen there and lots of people safeguarding. And of course I had the rest of the cast and crew with me too! Everyone was really supportive and it really felt like a real fire.”"

For more pictures of the dramatic scenes, go here to the official ITV Coronation Street site. I don't know how I feel about this storyline, I'm not one for the big showpieces even though Corrie do them so well, and it's difficult to get all heated up about it when I know I'll be experiencing heat of a different kind when it's broadcast, lying on a sunlounger in lovely Lanzarote. Are you looking forward to it?

Stella to remain as landlady following the fire

The Sun reported last week that Michelle Connor was set to become the new Rovers landlady, this was then seemingly confirmed by Sharon Marshall on an episode of This Morning last week.

However Sharon corrected herself on Twitter, stating that following the fire, Stella Price (Michelle Collins) will remain as landlady of the Rovers.

I'm glad that she'll be staying in charge as I think she's starting to fit in, and Michelle seems more at home in the factory than she ever did in the Rovers.
