Corrie's Candice joins Hollyoaks

Remember Candice? She's the Corrie crimper who left Coronation Street to go on tour with Status Quo in what must surely be the best ever soap exit.

Last year it was rumoured that Candice might be returning to Coronation Street. And now actor Nikki Sanderson who played Candice Stowe in Coronation Street has joined Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks.

Nikki will join Hollyoaks as Maxine Minniver – sister to wannabe glamour model Ann ‘Mitzee’ Minniver. Maxine is described as “a confident, lively, impulsive, flirtatious bombshell, with boundless energy and a penchant for living life on the edge - and to the full… a fearless risk-taker, Maxine is street savvy, witty, ambitious and can spot an opportunity a mile-off ”  So, not too different from Candice, then.

Nikki said: “Being a member of the Hollyoaks team has so far been an absolute pleasure and I am excited about what the future holds for my character.  I feel very lucky to be part of such a wonderful show and to be working with an amazing team.”

Her first appearance on the soap will come in Monday 5 November’s “first look” edition on E4.

No Corrie return for Sarah and Candice

Tina O Brien has revealed that she has not been approached about a return to Weatherfield, despite rumours which circulated last year that Sarah Platt and Candice Stowe were on the verge of a high profile return.

In an interview with New Magazine, Tina states that she hasn't been asked but would not rule out a return to the Street, although she doubts that she would be able to stick around long term.

I personally would be indifferent to a return for Sarah. She was a decent enough character but I would see no real purpose in a comeback at the moment. I really liked Candice and she held comedy value. She is the kind of character that would be a decent replacement for the soon to depart Rosie, but I can't think what would bring her back to the Street.

You were asked for your thoughts back in November, but what do you think now? Would a return for the duo be high up on your wish list or could you think of other characters you would rather see back first?

Nikki Sanderson: "I miss Candice."

Coronation Street crimper Candice Stowe is a legend. While most Corrie characters leave the cobbles in tears in the back of a taxi or on the Weatherfield Wayfarer with their belongings in a Freshco carrier bag, Candice hit the big time and left to be the hairdresser to Status Quo. What a way to go.

Nikki Sanderson, who played Candice, gives a great interview here about life on the Street as Candice and says: "I think I'll always miss her. She was my first major role and a massive part of my life. She will forever be loved in my heart! I loved it. With Candice it was fantastic. Sometimes she was moody and nasty. Next moment she was crying her eyes out. Then she was doing these really funny, comedic scenes. It was up, down and all over the place."

When asked if she would ever return to the Street as Candice, she said: "That's a major, 'I don't know'. You don't know what will happen in the future. Candice was fantastic but you don't know whether she could ever come back or whether she would fit back in with a storyline because quite a lot of people I was working with aren't there any more."

Nikki Sanderson is currently starring in The Vagina Monologues at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham from on February 4-15. Sally Lindsay, who played Shelley Unwin, is on the bill with Nikki too.

Nikki Sanderson, Sally Lindsay, Shobna Gulati in The Vagina Monologues

Three ex-Coronation Street actresses are taking part in the 10th anniversary of The Vagina Monologues. And that's a word I've never used on the blog before - do you know how hard it can be using the word monologue in a blog post? Full details of their performances are available at The Vagina Monologue's website right here. Sadly, they're not all performing in the same show although Sally Lindsay, who played Shelley Unwin, and Nikki Sanderson, who played Candice Stowe, will be together for one show in Glasgow. Shobna Gulati, who played Sunita Alahan, will be on stage with Linda Robson and Kellie Shirley in Wolverhampton. Catch 'em while you can, if that's your cuppa tea.

And if you missed Sally Lindsay in the BBC's Scallywagga, you missed a real treat, she was brill. Chillimondo!
