Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 20 December

Evening Corrie fans it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

In tonight’s big story Michelle and Vicky’s brilliant plan to frame Robert for murder is ruined as Vicky rather inconveniently goes into labour in the crummy hotel she’s holed up in. She refuses to go to a hospital, so it’s left to Michelle to deliver the baby. Before tonight’s show I could have sworn that Michelle had no discernible talents other than folding her arms and being stroppy, but clearly she is the country’s top midwife as she manged to deliver a washed, cord-free, three-month-old baby in about five minutes flat. I take back everything I said about her, the sheer skill of that woman.

Talking of stroppy, Roy’s goes to make peace with new goth niece Nina. Deep in a System of a Down hole, Nina refuses to open the door despite Roy paying her overdue rent, bringing falafel and telling her he promised her dad he would take care of her. Desperate to get through to her he brings reinforcements in the shape of Carla. It’s a good choice, they’re both women with a shared love of a strong eyebrow and wearing black all year round. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we find out that Carla had a secret goth past and that she spent the 80’s listening to Bauhaus records and calling herself Carlvira Wolfsbane-D’Oom. After Roy opens up to Nina about his lonely childhood she seems to soften and speaks to him through the letterbox. I’m enjoying the Nina, Carla and Roy trio. I hope they don’t give her a ‘normal’ makeover in six months’ time and turn her into Rosie Webster mark 2.

Back on the Street Dopey Derek is still trying to sell the factory he doesn’t own to Sarah and Nick. He tells them it’s theirs if they can get him a fast £10k, so he can take his estranged wife and kids to Florida. Nick and Sarah ask the Underworld comrades if they can collectively raise the money and despite explicitly being told to not tell anyone, leaky vessel Izzy goes straight to Gary for a loan. Unsurprisingly Gary doesn’t take the news terribly well. Telling Derek threateningly that he knows where his family live, he forces him to sign over the factory to him for a pound. Is this the last we’ll see of Derek? Oh no it isn’t…etc, etc.

In other news Jenny tries to do a Christmas good deed and take Rita out for the day, but Reet gets the hump saying she feels like a tick on Jenny’s to-do-list. Also, Tyrone and Fizz try to punish demon child Hope for ruining the school nativity, but totally fail to notice the MASSIVE BRGHT PINK burner phone which she has sticking out of her back pocket. As soon as they leave the room, she immediately calls Jade who tells her to continue with the plan.

And so back to the other plan. Vicky has given birth to a baby boy and Michelle persuades her to stop being dead and go to hospital. It’s not long before the police come calling and the news of her return to the living reaches Robert. Released from his prison cell, he immediately goes looking for his child but he’s too late as Vicky has checked herself out of hospital. Turning up at the Street he confronts Michelle who initially denies everything and then folds like pack of cards telling him that she, Vicky and Tyler were all in on the plot to frame him for murder. Looking punch-ably smug Robert reveals that he’s recorded everything on his phone. Michelle immediately bursts into tears telling him she’s sorry and just wanted to punish him because he broke her heart (who knew she had one?).  He agrees not to go to the police with the tape recording, but only if Michelle will tell him where Vicky and his son are. She refuses saying she made a promise to Vicky, but will the threat of the police change her mind?

I mean I gotta say based on Michelle’s last 13 years of being utterly self-serving and narcissistic I’d say yup she’d save her own skin faster than you can say Queen of the Universe, but I’m sure the writers would prefer Michelle to leave the show as a good and noble person so she’ll probably do the right thing.  But maybe I'm being a bit harsh. What do you think Corrie fans - let me know in the comments?

And that’s it for this week. See you in a fortnight or catch me on twitter @mskelstar.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 4th Dec 8.30 pm

I feel so sorry for Roy. He hasn't had much luck when it comes to family (Carla and Wayne aside, not biological anyway) and finding a kindred spirit in half brother Richard, his sudden death has taken that away, but has Roy gained a niece in Nina? Offering her a place at Roys Rolls, the goth teen is reluctant but doesn't seem to have any other option as she's been orphaned. Roy blames himself for the carer not turning up and promises to resolve it.

Michelle and Vicky are also kindred suddenly, and with a firm offer for the bistro on the cards, can Michelle resist a quick £70K? A sudden attack of guilt seems a tad late, and especially for Michelle!. Vicky, however, is keen on a quick buck and a quick start, but will the baby drop before the bistro sale does? Visiting Adam for advice, Michelle decides to cut her losses and sell-up sharply.

Also seeking that quick buck, Ryan is unknowingly duped by dropping a package off to private eye Lenny (a trap obviously) which he seems to pass with flying colours. Can Gary trust Ryan with more sinister collections or loan sharking maybe? Ryan's a bit flakey though, right? he may also be scared as a threat from Gary cannot be ignored, as we know.

With Weatherfield's winter wonderland also a colourful affair, Micheal seems distracted by a lack of Tianna or Grace. I think Rita needs to give the wonderland a visit to cheer herself up as Gemma is otherwise occupied with 4 babies and has no time for her either - go figure. I'm glad they brought up the baby milk/breastfeeding issue though. As a dad myself, even I know you can't possibly feed four kids from just one woman - if you get my drift...

Later, Rita is on her own again and flicking through her photo album, the tears roll.

With the Winterland in full-swing, Micheal is also heartbroken as Grace fails to bring Tianna for a visit. Aggie almost relishes in Micheal's sadness but Ed and James rally round in support.

Maternal isn't ever a word you associate with Carla Connor but with Baby Bertie and newly orphaned Nina, Carla does seem to have developed a mothering instinct? Nina doesn't take Carla's new demeanour too kindly though when she's told the social worker never turned up and Roy left her dad on his own to die! Carla may not be the surrogate Mum for Nina, but can Roy be the uncle she needs and finally get him some family on the street?

What did you think to this Wednesdays Corrie? let us know in the comments section.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 15 November

Evening Corrie fans it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

Queen of the Universe haters look away now as this is a big Michelle episode. In the Bistro as Carla chatters away merrily Ms Connor is completely distracted. Normally this would mean that she was thinking about how utterly amazing she is, but this time it’s because she is looking through her errant fiancĂ©’s phone. Unfortunately it seems he’s been clever enough to have deleted any suspicious messages from Vicky (though apparently not clever enough to use a passcode). Carla, clearly the brains of the outfit, tells her to ring the Stoke Re-offenders Programme, which is where he is claiming to be. They of course have never heard of him, so Weatherfield’s answer to Cagney and Lacey use some kind of technology to track him to Vicky’s house. I really have no idea how this worked but then again I can get lost using Google Maps and feel strongly that Alexa might be in league with the devil, so I am not the person to ask.

As they wait outside in the car Robert is in the process of splitting up with Vicky. The selfish git tells her that the car accident has made him rethink his life and he’s realised he doesn’t want to be with her. The man really is lower than a snake’s undercarriage. Devasted Vicky reminds him that he stopped her from starting a new life in Ireland with Jed, a man who for all his faults, actually did want her. As their argument spills out onto the street, Michelle and Carla see them and it’s quite obvious they’re a lot more than just passing acquaintances. It looks like Big Daddy is busted and Michelle might actually have realised that other people exist!

Meanwhile at No. 1 Claudia and Ken have returned from a fruitless trip to Scotland having failed to find Daniel and Bertie. Hardly surprisingly really as it transpires that the floppy-haired scamp has been in Cheshire all this time. Peter goes to the rescue and tracks him down sitting on a hillside talking to Sinead. Peter tells him he needs to come home and face his responsibilities and that Sinead wouldn’t want Bertie to be celebrated from his family, but Daniel says he can’t face going back to their home. Peter eventually leaves without him, telling a disappointed Ken that he doubts Daniel will be back for the funeral.

In other news Amy gets jealous when Maria asks Emma when she’s moving back to the flat. In a bid to keep her sister around a bit longer she does a fake dive that an Italian footballer would be proud of and pretends to have twisted her ankle. When it looks like they won’t be able to go to see Little Mix together she fesses up to her lie, but lovely Emma understands and tells her that when she moves home they can still spend time together. Also, Billy offers Bernie a job as a cleaner at the church but when he later sees her celebrating her employment with Kel he warms the slimeball to stay away from No.5.

And so back to Michelle…she returns to the flat to find Robert already there. He starts straight in with another lie about having jacked in his job with the young offenders but she stops him and tells him she knows he’s been in Macclesfield with his pregnant Irish girlfriend. As everyone watching collectively sucks their breath over their teeth and shouts ‘OOOOO BUSTED!’ at the telly he lies again claiming he and Vicky were never together and it was a one-night stand that happened while they were on a break. Which is an excuse that didn’t work for either her previous husband or Ross from Friends! Michelle storms out and goes straight around to confront ‘the other woman’.

Poor Vicky, as if it isn’t bad enough to be six months pregnant and dumped by a two-timing man who looks like a surprised stoat, now she has to deal with a poker-haired arm-folding egomaniac who comes to her house and calls her an ageing skank who steals other women’s men. Remarkably she is very restrained and doesn’t knock Michelle’s teeth out. Instead she tells her that she was in a relationship with Robert and produces the engagement ring her gave her. The Queen of the Universe obviously cannot believe that any man lucky enough to be within her orbit could even consider another woman, but has Vicky said enough to convince her?

When she gets back to the flat she tells Robert that she believes him and that Vicky is clearly a pathological liar. Feeling quite smug at having seemingly got away with it, Robert goes to bed leaving Michelle to sleep on the sofa. But as soon as he’s out of the room she pulls out some deeds of ownership for the Bistro and calls Adam.

So it looks like Michelle may be planning some sort of revenge on Robert involving pretending to be in love with him and then taking him for everything he has (a kind of recycled version of the Eva/Aidan plot?). Would it be too much to ask that she might consider the poor woman who is going to be left holding the baby and actually give her some of the money? Of course it would, this Michelle we’re talking about. She’ll most likely spend it on her very own bar or maybe buy herself an enchanted mirror which tells her she’s the fairest of them all. I hear Gary’s does very good deal on them.

And that’s it for this week. Are you happy that Robert has finally been found out, or are you wishing that Vicky could stay around a bit longer? Let me know in the comments or catch me on twitter @mskelstar.

Coronation Street Blog Interview: Kerri Quinn

One of the most rewarding and interesting aspects of interviewing any actor for me, is gaining an insight into how they approach their craft. It was therefore a joy to chat with Kerri Quinn, who plays Vicky Jefferies, at Coronation Street studios in Manchester. Those not wishing to encounter any spoilers may wish to look away now.

As we know, Kerri's character Vicky is pregnant with Robert Preston's baby, and along with his fiancée Michelle Connor, continues to be a victim of his lies as he navigates his double life with surprising efficiency. With Robert failing to commit, and ex Jed back on the scene offering her a fresh start with him in Ireland, Vicky is weighing up her options, which isn't going down well with the chef who wants to have his canapé and eat it.

To my mind, Vicky is one of the best characters to come on to the street in recent times. We first encountered her through a bullying storyline which involved her son Tyler harrassing Simon Barlow, and Vicky taking up employment at Underworld. She then reappeared months later on learning that Amy Barlow was pregnant, and Tyler was the father. We got to see more of this mouthy, headstrong, individual as a result, and her interaction with Tracy in particular was, and continues to be, a delight. It was in securing a short term job at the Bistro for Tyler that she came into contact with Robert. Months after her departure, I was as shocked as anyone to discover they had been having an affair, and that she was pregnant.

Kerri had no idea that her initial stint on the cobbles would result in a return visit with a big storyline. Her response when asked how she felt about it is a testament to her investment in her work. 'It was mixed emotions,' she replies, 'because I'm team Robert and Michelle. I think they're a great couple. But the actor in me was like, yes, brilliant. I was thrilled. I was ready for it as well. I really wanted the opportunity to make something of Vicky, because we'd seen her being boistrous and fighting and argumentative. So I really wanted to have a play with the character, and really tease out those nicer qualities, if she had any.'

Kerri has such a great handle on her character, and it shows when asked, in Vicky's ideal world, what she wants. 'I really don't think Vicky would be a very demanding person to be with,' she tells us. 'Yes, she's got her flaws. But what struck me about Vicky is she's really, really lonely. She doesn't have any friends. She doesn't have any family. So the only people that she interacts with are Robert and Tyler. There's stuff coming up where you do see that real vulnerable side of Vicky, where she has no one to talk to. I don't think she wants the complete fairytale with the big house, I think she just wants someone to love her and to commit to her. And have that reassurance and the stability. She's not a complicated person, she's just a very damaged woman. That's my take on it.'

His original appearance as a bully, and his initial treatment of Amy during the pregnancy storyline, didn't exactly show Tyler to be an upstanding young kid. But his maturity when he and Amy had a heart to heart in the community garden showed a glimmer of hope for his character, and a recent award at the 'Thug Oscars,' in the words of his mother, is enough to demonstrate his potential. I asked Kerri if he proves to be a good support to Vicky in the coming months. 'Tyler's holding down a job, and you definitely get to see the change in him, which is interesting, because I was very precious about not creating two monsters that live together,' she says. 'It's Tyler and Vicky against the world, and what I really wanted to see was how they behave with each other in their own home environment. They love each other, and if you fight with one you fight with both of them. So you do see this beautiful, endearing quality about Tyler. He adores his mother, and he would kill for her.'

Acknowledging that, given the nature of her character before now, Vicky is unlikely to be popular with the public, Kerri says, 'I have a very difficult job which is to take someone who, when she came on the street, was incredibly unlikeable, and now try and find some humanity and common ground where people can go, alright, so she's not all that, she's got a heart, there's a nice person in there somewhere. But I feel that needs to be justified, why she's so damaged, why she's so front footed, and I think this storyline with Jed will hopefully clarify a bit of that.'
Kerri adds, 'She's definitely got a chip on her shoulder. We've seen her ponytail and her leggings and loads of make up. I think that's her armour, as in, I'm not to be messed with. But I think in there is a sweet girl who's really just looking for an opportunity for a good man to love her.'

Being a big fan of the character, I noted Vicky's really strong start. 'Someone like that is good,' Kerri tells me. 'Especially with the fights and the factory. You need someone like that. But she also needs to have likeable qualities if you want to have longevity. You can't just have someone there who's going to punch the head off someone every day for no reason. It needs to be justified. I think hopefully this storyline will redeem her a bit.'

Kylie Platt and Becky Grainger are examples of two characters who had tough, abrasive starts, but who revealed softer qualities that led to them remaining on the street. Asked if she feels there might be this potential for Vicky, Kerri says, 'Yeah, I do. I think the difficulty there is how, because she has no links to the street. Nobody really likes her. She has no friends. She's been sacked. So it's how you do it. I think that's maybe why this storyline, when you see someone in a very vulnerable position and being screwed over by Robert, it does leave it open to people maybe having a wee bit more empathy for her. Again, that's it being justified. So yeah, I would like to think that they could bring her in for a longer period.'

In revealing that Vicky's ex, and Tyler's father, Jed, left her for someone else, Kerri is confident that her character would do the right thing by Michelle if she knew that Robert was still with her. This doesn't mean, however, that Robert would get off lightly if the truth came out. 'Vicky and Michelle are both quite strong, fiery women,' Kerri says. 'I would be terrified if I was Robert. But I also feel really sorry for him because you're just going, be honest, just come clean and it probably will fix itself.'

While she thinks it would be lovely if Michelle and Vicky were to come together in the event they find out about one another, Kerri is conscious that the show will likely go for what makes the best drama. 'Vicky's pregnant, so I suppose killing each other's not really an option,' she says, adding, 'And we still don't know. Nothing's set in stone, so I don't know how it's going to play out.'

What we do know is that Tristan Gemmill who plays Robert, and Kym Marsh who plays Michelle, are leaving the show, but what this will mean for Vicky is anyone's guess at the moment. We did have some fun speculating and teasing out some possibilities that might give Vicky the link to the street which would allow her to remain – a job at the Bistro while bringing up the future heir? Stirring things up back at Underworld? A love interest? At the suggestion that she could end up living happily ever after with Robert, Kerri acknowledges that would mean her departure from the show. In the event that was to happen, however, her response is a pragmatic one. 'I would just have to embrace the exposure of the storyline and go, cheers, thank you so much, and hope that it opens up other doors. At this moment in time, I'm going at the end of the storyline, and whatever happens beyond that will be a bonus. But I'd love to stay.' This writer would love to see that too.

Thankfully, Vicky won't be going anywhere for the moment. We're told that in the coming days, there will be a bust up between Robert and Jed, and she decides to set out for Weatherfield to confront Michelle. But it's not clear if she'll manage to go through with her plan. In the event that Michelle was to find out about Robert's betrayal, Kerri is asked if she would like Vicky to be the one to break the news. 'I would love to be that person,' she says. 'But for me, I feel a bit like I have to protect Vicky, because she's already got a bit of a bad rep. So if Vicky was the person to do that, I think it would have to be like taking one for the team, and saying, I'm really sorry, I have to sit you down and tell you this; I don't think it should be the two of them ripping each other's heads off. I think it's more interesting to see a common ground. And that would work better for my character, because then you would see a different side of Vicky, where she says, I'm so sorry I didn't know about you, I'm trying to do the right thing.'

Kerri, who is commuting from Belfast to Manchester for the role, is clearly a passionate, committed actor, and I ask her what has motivated her across her career. 'I'm a real homebird,' she tells me, 'and I've done theatre for years and years. I chose to stay in Belfast because I wanted to. And I just felt like I was a bit of a late starter to explore other elements of acting, like TV and film.' She continues, 'I had to get a bit proactive. So this is a new venture for me. It's early days in the whole TV thing. I just want to keep trucking and make new relationships further afield from Ireland, so that's what I'm trying to do.' And I wish her every success with it.

Interesting, funny, engaging, insightful – I could go on about Kerri, and her positive, enthusiastic attitude towards her role, craft and career. I love the character of Vicky and what Kerri has brought to it, and I too really hope that Corrie find a way to keep her in the show. No matter what storylines would come her way, there is no doubt that she would continue to bring something special to our screens, whatever the drama might entail.
