Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 24 June 2022

We are all well aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, so a slightly inebriated Audrey should have known to stay away from a motorbike which has been hiding in the background for months.  Also, how did the front door get locked with Audrey still in there - or did I miss it?  Wednesday's cliffhanger was resolved when Brian (looking for his third trim in a few days) and Elaine (passing by) hear faint cries for help.  Coincidentally, Stephen responding to an overdramatic phone call from Sarah, arrives and breaks in to find his mother pinned to the floor.  An ambulance is summoned and R'Audrey and her Stephen are "blued and two-ed" to the hospital, where Audrey requires an operation for a ruptured spleen but is later well enough to tell Gail off and send her away with  Stephen becoming once again the favoured offspring.

Whilst Audrey was having her unexpected rest on the floor a Platt council of war gathered in Speed Daal - Gail, Nick, David, Sarah and Shona seeking wisdom from recovering alcoholic Peter Barlow on the best way to get Audrey to see the light and foreswear the demon alcohol.  Listening, I am not entirely sure that Peter's experiences were entirely helpful.  The pow-wow broke up when Brian panted down the stairs that there was someone in trouble in "Trim Up North".  I felt for poor Brian - he had obviously gone to the Platt residence at t'far end of t'Street and all the time they were all in Bistro just across the road from the barbers!

Tim and Sally are in Roy's Rolls and Tim tries to make a flirty joke which falls flat.  To work on their intimacy Sally has written "Things That Bring Me Joy" which includes "Visiting the stately homes of Cheshire, Creating objects of beauty with my crafting.  My hot tub.  Iconic old films that bring out the romance in my soul."  Tim responds with his little list: "Weathy County, Paul Weller,  Cheese." Oh, he adds rapidly seeing Sal's face - spending time with you my one and only true love.   They agree a lunch date in the Bistro, but Sal is definitely not impressed. Leaving the cafe Tim  is stopped by Aggie who tells him that she and Ed had a slight disagreement but had not had the chance to make up - so when Tim finds Ed and Ronnie in the Bistro later, rather than paying attention to Sally he is constantly using his phone to get Aggie to come to the Bistro.  Sally gets quite worked up at being ignored as she relates the timeless classic iconic romanticism of Dr Zhivago, especially as she has been told she has the look of a young Julie Christie.

I will let you find your own pictures of Miss Christie with such accoutrements.

Talking of romantic doctors Peter is also still worked up about Mr Thorne the surgeon and borrows an old tape machine which Ken used to use in his journalism days and which (amazingly) still works.  Peter invites Mr Thorne to Seb's memorial garden but Mr Thorne knows it is a set-up and insists Peter stops recording on his phone - which Peter does.  However the tape machine keeps running and eventually Peter has the evidence of an admission and is going to bring the man down.

Councillor Windass is almost glad she has been sacked as it means she has time to meet the union leader of the refuse worker's depot.  When Jimmy Dixon turns up he is a completely out of time unreconstructed antediluvian reptile looking for Maria's boss and having no interest in recycling - unless of course there is extra money in it which no councillor would ever offer to find ever - but Maria does.  Later Maria gives an interview which, unscripted, is excellent.  However the film is edited and released on social media and holds Maria up to complete ridicule.

George is almost in hiding as he is still trying to avoid Frank the school bully and together with Todd decide that they need to enable poor Sean to become aware of Frank's true nature as a leopard never changes its spots and therefore Frank must still be a bully, all they need to do is prove it.

Steve sees Sal in Victoria Gardens and gives her a pep talk about marriages and car crashes with reference to Tracy.  Steve makes it clear how much Tim loves her so the Metcalfes regroup in the Rovers.  And a few drinks later they depart for home!

Clearly the Sal and Tim stuff had real echoes of the Ogdens whilst the reversion to old technology was neat with Dr Thorne.  And will Elaine be Brian's new squeeze?  Clearly we are also seeing decent numbers in a scene now with the Platt family gathering and the whole feel is more like days of yore - but without any particular issues being examined - far more like proper Corrie as the family interplays (the Platts and the Metcalfes drive) - essentially the characters drive the narrative.  In many ways the most welcome episode in a long time.  Please tell me you agree on Twitter

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 23rd of February 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Free of son deaths, sinkholes, and shoot-outs, you would think Abi would enjoy the honeymoon period before more drama? Monday nights Corrie saw her admit to Sally that she had a one-night stand with a nameless suitor. We viewers know who it is, but how long before everyone else on the street finds out? With Sally finding out, it was evident that Kevin would soon find out, and tonight that was what happened. We did get to see the first half of the adoption hearing, and the results surprised me! Normally, soaps would have blown through that with a successful outcome, but having been adjourned until March, we get a swift and stark reminder of the substance abuse past.

Abi's mortified with the outcome, but Kev is upbeat and readies a campervan for their journey away. All was looking good until the van's Bluetooth tuned into Abi’s phone call to Sally (plus pronouns!) that was very clever indeed, and nothing to do with the EE sponsorship, ahem. It was, however, a super soap moment, and Sally’s involvement only added another level to this drama. With Kevin finding out the unsavoury truth, he and Jack headed off on their own. However, Kev leaves thinking it was Tez (Seb’s Dad) and not Imran. Surely the truth will out, eventually?

A few days back, I tweeted out my fandom for newsboy Stu. He's lost that cough superquick, thankfully, and having been formally introduced to Corrie's patron saint, Ken, it seems he may be sticking around? Tonight, having gained gainful employment and a roof over his head, thanks to Yasmeen, our ex-hobo chef/wine connoisseur has decided to grapple with Tracy too. The wine tasting switch subplot was light relief - I enjoyed it. Is there going to be a romantic courtship with Yasmeen? Drinks with his boss/landlord around their garden heater would suggest so? I think he would make a great pairing with Bernie - we shall see. Meanwhile, Tracy’s face at tasting grape-flavoured paint stripper was a delight. Will this put her at crosshairs with Yasmeen, again? I do hope so.

Hopefully, Sean will heed Imran’s (Monday night) warning and leave it out, or if we are honest about it, maybe he could just leave altogether? Tonight, he was back flouncing around the factory, and I’m thinking he’d make a great adversary of loony Lydia? He dished out some advice to her tonight which means Sean is officially involved in it now - am I right? We can only hope. Maybe Sarah can sack him?

Joseph’s latchkey kid existence (and in poverty for a quad of siblings) has brought some great drama to the street these last few months. I wasn't quite expecting it to culminate in him flying off with granny Linda to Portugal, but tonight, that seems to be what's going to happen? Great to see Izzy back on screen and I enjoyed Bernie and Dev's meddling, in the process.

Meanwhile, loves young dream, Amy & Jacob, have officially re-coupled up. A stunningly shot scene on an old wooden boat / dark lighting /candles could easily have been a pastiched rom-com moment, yet, these two fine youthful actors performed a believable courtship, of course, this will lead to more chaos on the street, as Jacobs dubious past comes back to the fore. Could this be a Shakespearean tragedy ala Montagues v Capulets or a violent reprise like West Side Story? I think the latter is where this is going, and I must admit, I’m looking forward to seeing more of Tracy’s (lesser-seen recently) nasty vicious bile. The sour wine will leave a bad taste, but I think Jacob's return will be much more bitter!

Overall, an enjoyable midweek visit to Weatherfield! Again, I must mention how pleased I am to see a plethora of cast back on the screen.

Same time, next week then!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 26th January 7.30 & 8.30 pm

This week, Wednesday night’s Coronation Street gave us the downfall of Bernie Winter’s recent kidnap cash scam (of sorts), and devil-child, Hope, suitably sold her down the river. I’ve enjoyed this storyline. I don't think I’m on my own in saying that Bernie wasn't a favourite (to start with) and now I think she has longevity, in the vain of Janice Battersby, perhaps? I've been watching classic corrie (for blog research, obviously), and you can see the similarities. Evelyn's involvement (in pushing this plot strand to a conclusion) was a nice touch and gave it added depth. Any added Evelyn involvement makes it top-level Corrie, of course. More of that, please. However, Bernie is now in real trouble with Dev, her blended family, and the Weatherfield keystone cops.

The best scene of tonight was the gathering outside Chez’s front door, and it was good to see Evelyn, Bernie, and Dev in serious confrontation, instead of the comedy corner shop stuff. The dawn/or dusk of natural lighting did give the scene a sense of dark foreboding and was a good direction. Tonight's plot also brought the 'Fiz always defending evil Hope' strand back into play. Will she finally see sense? Here’s hoping!

Also tonight, and still seething from Maria’s political pee take, Sally (sidelined by Tim’s post-op heart problem) decides to hang up her power suit and clipboard, in aid of her husband's recovery. Have we seen the last of our favourite Coronation Street Mayor? (Sorry, Alf) I hope not. I would not have thought of throwing Sally and Maria together, and although the acorn was the climate change story, I think Corrie has done well with this (unexpected) comedy tree. I hope we see more from them both soon. Talking of bolshy women, dashing Daniel seems to have been caught in Lydia’s net, whilst his ex Daisy struggles with her true feelings. Lydia is going to be a bunny-boiler, isn't she?

Elsewhere,(or, things that don't float my boat) Jenny inadvertently meets Leo’s Dad, Teddy, and the relationship progresses anyway, and Craig’s crutch investigation deepens.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 15th December 7.30

Sarah and Adam remind me a bit of Maria and Gary. Two attractive characters are put together, acting as a Corrie conduit, in bringing other characters into their orbit. A few years ago, when Sarah married Adam, I rejoiced at the bringing together of Houses Barlow and Platt, and we’ve certainly had a splash of drama (primarily the Carla affair) thus far, yet they’ve remained relatively strong. Suddenly bringing Adam’s Mike Balwin Esque lothario past into the equation though? Surely problems are afoot? Tonight, Sarah goes for another drink with girl crush Lydia who also has her little son, Finn, in tow. Meeting Sarah and Adam for a mulled wine, Lydia recognises Adam and swiftly leaves. It transpires that Lydia is one of Adam’s many many exes! So, what about Lydia’s little boy? We’ve already had Nick with his long-lost little son, Sam, is it Adam’s turn?

Curtis’s hypochondria, fake illness, and pill-popping peculiarity have finally come to the fore. What will Emma do? For all of her naivety, innocence, and seeing the good in people, I do wonder why (Emma, being the prodigal daughter of Steve and Fiona) is soo blind to this absolute weirdo? Neither of her parents would have put up with this! Visiting the hospital, Emma meets his consult and is denied any medical info, Emma tracks down his stepdad (another lie) who's less guarded, and not bound by any medical confidentiality. Emma then confronts Curtis with the truth, and like I say, for all her naivety, innocence, and good bones, why the chuff is she with this guy? I do hope she sees sense before the wedding!

Sally’s councillor persona is a stroke of genius. A story arc that the snobby nosey neighbour ex-mayor has long held, and I love it!. Coronation street's parking problem and red rec proposal are hot potato issues for the Community Q & A session. Before the meeting, Sally gets a visit from a Beavers Nook (lol) development rep, her ego soon primed by talk of posh houses and wine evenings, all very Hyacinth Bucket! Even everyman Tim is roped in by the promise of a football gig. I did enjoy Tim's shout for the working man (chumocracy, social housing etc) - a great example of the episodes strong writing. As we know, Maria is already an opponent of the Red Rec development and uses this as an excuse to launch her campaign to run against Sally!  I predicted this weeks ago but, in times of trouble, we need this familiarity from Corrie. Sally for Mayor, then?

Whilst Max continues to cause David parental nightmares (Corrie's poetic justice) Audrey's had another car accident, with her eye-sight getting ever worse. Is this a retirement storyline for Coronation Street's legendary hair doer-upper?

Elsewhere tonight -  Zeedan consoles Miriam, and gets a gobful from Kelly about Stu’s innocence.

Tonight’s Corrie was only a half-hour slot, but I must admit, I do like it nightly! Let me know what you think. I am @rybazoxo on Twitter,  your self-styled cobbles connoisseur
