Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 14 February 2025

Good day.  After weeks of no Friday episodes we are back to normal tonight.  The drama tonight centres largely around the Platts, the Websters and Carla whilst other stories are on the back burner.  Max is hiding out in the closed (and sold) builder's yard and yet everyone apart from the police knows where to find him.  Lauren gets out of him his plan to go on the run to Belize and Aunty Becky but Shona tells him to think it through carefully.  Eventually he ducks out of the hide and disappears - but Shona and David track him down to the police station where not only is he helping the police with their enquiries but he is answering all of their questions in very full detail.  Shona brings Lauren up to date.  Max is going down and Harvey is promising to make his life interesting already.

I am not sure David is cut out to be a criminal; he tells Shona what is planned before it happens and word reaches Nick who hauls him out of the getaway vehicle (which sits outside the precinct for hours as Andy does not have the tools so is bound to be on CCTV somewhere) when he is told that Max is missing.  He appears all flustered in front of his mate, Andy,  who is organising it and David cannot concentrate.  Nick decides that he will find the money they need to get Harvey off David's back.  Shona and David continue to argue repeatedly.

Roy travels with Carla to hospital and we are given a couple of the excellent scenes these two can produce when paired; while waiting for the operation in the hospital Roy is explaining the invention of anaesthetics and how operations were performed prior to that.  The wait has been caused by Rob demanding a word by word explanation from Lisa as to how his murder conviction will be erased (remember he is in good company - Tracy managed it) - largely it seems because Detective Marsden may be light on actualities at times - allowing a crowbar to be applied to the evidence to expose a can of worms.  Rob wants insurance and insists on recording Lisa on his phone (how does he even have a phone?).  Eventually the operations happen and all seems well except that suddenly Officer Mandy Waring is summoned back to base and Rob will be back in the Big House on Monday.

Chesney keeps seeing a silver van and we find that Gemma's new bestie Lou has a husband, Mick, who drives a silver van - what are the chances?  And even better they are moving into Mawdsley St - right across the ginnel along with the three unseen children who apparently like the quads never need looking after by their parents.  For a new family arriving this is low key compared to the Battersbys!

Kevin breaks the bad news to Jack that he has testicular cancer, that it is not terminal and that there will be an operation on Monday followed by treatment.  Jack is very adult and gives his father a hug and tells him he loves him.  Abi tries to cook Kev a special dinner which goes wrong and is rescued by Debbie and the chef at the Bistro (I thought Debbie was no longer involved in the Bistro?) with a meal for two including burrata (a type of mozarella which is a cheese, Debbie explains).  Debbie takes Jack off to the Chariot Square Hotel for his tea.  Abi and Kev sack off the chicken breast in miso butter to go to bed and work up a thirst.

Steve makes his peace with Leanne and she joins him and Cassie at the bar where Leanne makes it clear to Cassie that Steve is not such a bad person and perhaps they ought to make a go of it.  They share a few drinks before Steve and Cassie depart to number One to watch some Scandi-noir and they later retreat to bed together (well it is Valentine's Day as evidenced above - and Glenda is with Michael isn't she?).  After Leanne has told the entire Rovers that she is not an arsonist, she and Yasmeen talk, the latter reminds Leanne she is still a family member needs to be put her anger aside.  As Leanne leaves the Rovers she crosses paths with Sam and in a very brief exchange she promises that the anger has gone and she wants to mend her ways and perhaps be friends again.  Cassie is noticeably drinking orange juice throughout.

The Steve McDonald view of women - a bit of a challenge, bit of an edge, not full-on Loopy Lou, but just a challenge.   At which point Cassie goes in for the kiss.

There were also cameo appearances from Ryan plus Adam with Alya.  For those who missed Wednesday and tonight Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) stole her scenes.  I have to record that however good the story and the journey it will be a poorer place without her around.  Her return was long desired and most of it has been wondrous and has been particularly bright this week.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 6 December 2024

Welcome to Friday night on t'Street.  Shona has not been home since "yesterday" but has sent Roy a message to day she will not be in as she is not feeling well (a headache) as he tells David who is looking for her.  When she does re-appear she rows with David but eventually two wise old men sit down with the couple separately - Roy with Shona and Max with David - to effectively remind both of them that they love each other and that Clayton might be important to Shona and objectionable to David the latter has to learn to live with that.  Which is all well and good until David discovers that Shona took the "morning after" pill this morning and that Daniel happens to have Shona's purse in his bag as he found it down the back of the sofa after Adam brought her home last night.  Given Adam's reputation of chasing women David reckons that Adam and Shona spent the night together - which Adam denies as he slept on the sofa (on the purse) and Shona had his bed.  David accepts the story.

We do not get to see Les's funeral but before leaving the Street Leanne is making a real song and dance to get Nick's attention, which simply acts to wind up Toyah.  At the wake in the Bistro Leanne tells Nick that she has spoken to Mrs Crawshaw and gained approval for Sam to go on holiday with Nick so that they can have some family time.  Les's committal was with "All the Reasons" by Status Quo which fitted his memory well, after all Rick Parfitt did hit him.  Leanne spots Nick and Toyah being friendly and immediately breaks down in tears so Nick can comfort her.  Chesney remains unsure about the abattoir and the offer of £50k between them to sign an NDA.  His concerns grow when he is approached by Jim a fellow abattoir employee who says the place is an accident waiting to happen - the floors are not properly cleaned, there have been injuries - but Les would not drink on duty and so it was not his fault. Les head butting Curly and running over Theresa (the turkey) also get mentioned.

Debbie Webster has a new car - which for those interested is a TVR 280S S1 which apparently needs some attention from Kevin as the tyres seem a bit wonky.  Apparently convertibles are always cheaper at this time of year.  Bethany and Sarah consult Adam - but despite another botched op no legal action can be taken in this country - but it might be possible to pursue a director or shareholder if there was one based in the UK and what a surprise Debbie is a shareholder!  Sarah and Bethany take matters into their own hands and confronts Debbie at the Chariot Square hotel.  Later Sarah openly keys the new car in front of Kevin.  Kit wanders past and invites Sarah to go somewhere quiet to explain herself - which she does back at the flat.

Glenda, George, Mary and Brian appear together a couple of times - firstly discussing Christmas films and then Noddy Holder but seemingly unaware of Stan Potter - before their time I suppose.  Later they foregather in the Rovers to provide an audience for a further exchange between Sarah and Debbie and to discuss France where Mary on a flight of fancy recalls spending six months with a farmhand!    Debbie uses the opportunity of the row to tell Sarah that Bethany lied at the support group about it being cancer - which Daniel over hears and instantly cannot believe that Bethany lied about the cause of her stoma.  Bethany admits that they assumed it was cancer and she did not correct them.

Ramping up the Christmas spirit David is trying to decorate the house and Dev is serving bratwurst - as if anyone could turn down Dev's sausage (even if it does smell).

Gail and Jesse appear in the Rovers - Gail is insistent on selling the house and going to look at the new builds near the Red Rec.  Jesse fancies a villa in the South of France and seeks to convince Gail they will enjoy it.  Once home they switch on the lights on the now decorated tree - they come on and then go off.  Then Jesse points out their shipping name #Jail and they both laugh and hug.

Finally at the Rovers David and Shona are about to have a celebratory reconciliation beer.  Adam enters and David offers him a drink as reparation for the earlier accusation.  Adam then admits that Shona told him almost everything last night - but not the "who".  This upsets Shona who tells David she is not feeling well but as she attempts to leave Kit enters and says "We gonna talk about last night?".  So at the moment the implication is that Shona got herself rat-arsed, had some form of congression with an individual who may or may not have been Kit, was in some way found distraught by Adam who ensured she encountered no further harm but who knows much of the story.  And of course it may all be a red-herring.  Roll credits.

Last weekend the Sun on Sunday interviewed Sean Wilson who confirmed that following a voluntary interview with Greater Manchester Police they will be taking no further action over the report they had received about him which was materially at variance with the information initially provided by an unknown source to ITV Studios which prevented his anticipated return to Coronation Street.  I record this here because I feel one or two individuals seem to have conspired, with little available evidence, to destroy a whole body of work which the professional team at ITV Studios developed to explain Gail's departure and which in terms of the overall programme potentially reflected, for the long term viewers, a more welcome leaving story.  We cannot now know how that story was going to run and speaking purely personally I feel "I wuz robbed".  Sean Wilson has obviously spoken for himself and in the light of other recent allegations it is inevitable that management had to take the steps it did.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 22 November 2024

Tonight I feel as though the White Queen from Through the Looking Glass has been sprinkling her magic across Weatherfield (given that she can believe 6 unbelievable things before breakfast) and hope that I can convey events as they happened.  Lisa awakes on Carla's couch which is normally where Ryan spends the night - but apparently he enjoyed being elsewhere last night as we are later told.  Lisa cannot remember trying to start a sing along with Bo Rap.  Carla gets her a sausage bap from Roys Rolls - Lisa asks if she can have another sleep before she goes home.  Ryan is surprised that Carla did not seize the moment last night - and points out that it might not be too late.  Carla returns to the flat and tells Lisa not to continue getting dressed and drags the acquiescent woman into the bedroom.

Mason survived the night and Betsy wants them to get closer - but Mason appears to have grown a conscience and tells her that once he is sorted then he will consider it.  Logan and Matty are watching Betsy like hawks.  They eventually corner her in the alley off Victoria Street.  She says Lisa will be worried so they tell her to send her mother a text which she does using a code to say that she is in danger and the post coital Carla and Lisa are soon searching the streets to find her - but Logan/Matty are telling her that she needs to ensure Mason knows where his loyalties lie; luckily Ryan passes the end of the ginnel and Betsy calls him over and the ne'er do wells are on their way, one of whom Ryan recognises.  Mason meets Betsy in Roys Rolls and he passes her a piece of patisserie prepared in college today - and also gives Roy (who is partial to mille-feuille) a piece for later - Betsy declares her piece is gorgeous.  She denies having seen Matty and Logan.

Max is out of the big house and it does not take him that long to discover that Lauren is inside due to his parents' efforts when Kit interviews him and shows him the letter he wrote to Lauren.  He tells Jit that Lauren hit Joel to save Max's life - but he is still going to be prosecuted for perverting the course of justice.  Max is not amused.  Initially it seems that Frankie might be joining Lauren - but is there another possibility?  Lauren phones Roy and Max joins the call - Lauren would like him to take on Frankie and he tells David and Shona that is what he wants to happen.  However no-one seems to have considered that Max will go down for his own illegal actions.

Leanne is down - Oliver's four year anniversary is approaching and in Roys Rolls R'Tracy is back in full-on gobby mode wanting confirmation that she will be testifying against cult boy (Rowan).  And helping to get Amy's money back.  A little later Steve is getting coffee when Cassie comes in and is pleased to hear that Ken will be home soon - he just had too much warfarin (a blood thinner rarely prescribed these days as it has been replaced by Rivaroxaban which is much safer) in his system.  Steve then gives Cassie a dressing down for giving him too many tablets and sacks her again.  R'Toyota is listening and once Cassie has gone explains how Tracy knocked the pills flying earlier in the week so it probably was not Cassie's fault (although the audience is shouting as one that it WAS Cassie).  Tracy is told to leave number 1 by Ken and not to darken his door again.  Cassie is soon re-instated at Number 1 with a pay rise BUT we then see her searching online for drugs to make people drowsy!  Steve apologises for earlier and the more glamourous Cassie we now have makes a point of gracious acceptance.

Leanne pops into the Bistro and almost catches Nick and Toyah kissing.  How many men have those two both enjoyed?  Since Toyah's return it is Peter, Imran and Nick - are there more?  Toyah is coming to point where she feels that the world needs to know.  So presumably all will become clear next week, probably on Oliver's anniversary.

Betsy espies that Lisa is wearing a "new" top which exactly matches one Carla wears and immediately works out that she spent last night in Carla's bed and punishes her mother's misdeeds by throwing water over her top.  Lisa and Carla seek to explain that did not happen yesterday, but today might be another story.  Betsy reckons a day's difference has no effect.  As a result Lisa and Carla argue as Lisa wants to put Betsy first, so it is all over already.  Betsy is contemplating the day in Victoria Gardens and Carla joins her to tell her how life really is - and that Betsy needs to grow up.  Betsy does not want a Becky to be replaced and she does not want Lisa to want anyone other than her.  Carla tells her that we get one short life each, so wring some joy out of it.  That life has gone - and Betsy needs to accept that and allow herself and by implication Lisa the chance to move on.

Betsy offers Matty and Logan a deal.  If they promise to leave Mason alone then she will arrange to get them keys whilst the staff are on a team building day and they can have their fill of brand new laptops etc.  She will let them in and it will be the easiest job ever.  The deal is agreed.

So I struggle to believe that Max would not think about his own jail sentence, that Matty and Logan think that Betsy really means it, that Toyah has changed her mind so quickly, that Cassie is still drugging Ken, that Carla is no longer entirely straight, that Tracy did not really know where the pills should go and defend herself, that Roy won't enjoy the pastry and offer Mason work.  As it is after breakfast I am allowed seven?  I almost certainly won't be here next week but should be back in two weeks time to bring you all up to date again.
