Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 21 July 2023

First up is the curious case of "Who's the Daddy?" with Sarah being scanned next week and taking a blood test to determine the sex of the child; presumably it will not show a blood type which could not come from the parents?  Adam is trying to carry on as normal but mid-afternoon in a telephone call he is congratulated on becoming a father - and all the sleepless hours ahead.   Adam has a panic attack and a prospective client, Colin Budd, disappears in the hour he "loses" pulling himself together - as Daniel finds him later.

Tim is released having been held by the police overnight - the next stage will depend on Stephen.  At home he tells Sally, Gail and Elaine that he stuck to "no comment" in the interviews and has said nothing.

Audrey arrives from the hospital having sat by Stephen's bedside (the operation was a success) and wades in, telling Elaine she should be at the hospital with her fiance and Tim tells Audrey she should watch her back - Stephen is the one who should be in prison.  They show Audrey the signed joint life assurance policy - but this does little to change her mind and she turns it around - as it is a joint life policy Elaine must have set it up with Tim!

Back at the hospital Audrey updates Gail and Sarah when Stephen regains consciousness.  The news that he is awake is regaled to Tim and family by DC Tinker (when you need a uniform copper why send a detective?) who is able to say that Stephen has confirmed that he slipped and the police are terminating their investigations.  Tim remains convinced that Stephen is rotten.

Dev is all over Aadi who is about to commence his new job as Darren's assistant - which seems to being the hired driver for Darren's wife, Courtney.  Dev just wants in on the "Freshco units" deal, but Aadi is driving to the shops and not attending the meeting with a Koi carp loving architect.  Shopping done Courtney treats Aadi to a milk shake and listens to his business plans before revealing that the "arm candy" exterior hides an MBA trained brain!

A little later Courtney and Aadi go to Darren's office.  She alleges that she has heard there is another party bidding for the Freshco units who are building a consortium with retailer input, Darren is dismissive until Aadi pipes that Dev has the knowledge and more importantly the money.  Darren agrees to a meeting with Dev whilst Aadi and Courtney exchange smiles.  The four foregather in the Rovers and it is clear that Courtney has primed Aadi with some back story on one of Darren's failures when he had a small unit - but no parking so it struggled.  However Aadi has a solution - delivery lockers for parcels and the punters will spend.  The deal is on.

Paul tells Billy he is going to go to the MND Support Group meeting later in the day, even though he knows it will be hard he does not want Billy to join him (well it might be better than Blanche at an AA meeting).  At the meeting (in what looks like a new set) he is confronted by a stair lift and Shelly (Rossington - Natalie Amber) who is in a wheelchair and is also attending the MND group.  Paul leans down to talk to her and she tells him not to curtsy, she rolls into the meeting room and Paul decides that it is not for him and does a runner.  He admits as much to Billy and his embarrassment.

Isabella is not looking forward to being back in her builder infested flat in Italy - Sean and Mary pop along to bid her farewell.  Brian sees that he is back to the "Life of Brian" as a mediocrity.  Mary calls him kind, clever and decent which he interprets too positively - but she immediately dumps him back into the friend zone.  Later in the Rovers Brian gives Mary a small present which she appreciates but his romantic suit cannot be pressed.  Rita arrives and Brian admits his place in the friend zone.  Rita clearly has some thinking to do.

Audrey returns to the Metcalfe's with Gail and they apologise for earlier.  Elaine has gone to the hospital where Stephen explains that he lied because he wants them to stay together.  She asks him about the assurance policy - he denies forging her signature and says she signed it on a day when she was not well.  The lightbulb turns on at full megawattage and Elaine exclaims "Geoff Metcalfe".  The wood has parted and she can see the trees - it is all off and Elaine can spot all the lies - including the truth about Gabrielle.  She goes and Stephen cancels the life policy.

Aadi is about to celebrate his success (at least in Dev's eyes) when he gets a message and is apparently summoned to Darren's office.  Arriving there he finds Courtney who has her own agenda.  Apparently Darren grovels after straying and she has forgiven him twice.  Aadi confirms he does not have a girlfriend and Courtney launches herself at him.

I suspect Paul will be seeing more of Shelly on his journey - and what looks like a new set to use!  Talking of new sets and new uses Darren's office is getting a work out already.  Ryan Early (who plays Darren Vance) has had a previous role in t'Street but most recently has been an insipid physical trainer and judo instructor on The Archers; frankly Dev I would not trust him with your money after listening to a background phone call he made on Wednesday.  Stephanie Davis (playing Courtney Vance) has previously been part of Hollyoaks and I assume brought the costumes with her; frankly Aadi do you know whom you are bedding - she has already told you she has a brain as well her other assets!

And a short scene with Rita was played to perfection by both Barbara Knox and Peter Gunn.  Additional plaudits to Sally, Gail and Audrey as apologies were made and we were gently reminded of the long term connection between Sally and Gail.  Excellent.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 18 February 2022

Amy is not going to school because she is suffering the after effects of having had a drink she consumed being spiked with GHB.  Max is not going to school because David wants the school to be sure they have identified the perpetrator of the drink spiking.  Luckily everyone apart from Mrs Crawshaw appears to be aware that Max was videoing the event and might well have caught someone adding drugs to a drink.  Max prevaricates but once he is home alone he gets the memory card and transfers the content over to his laptop.  And what do you know - the person with a supply of GHB is one Max who had intended to drug Mr Osbourne so that the latter would really be able to understand David's experiences with the drug (although the rest of David's experiences are not up to be shared).  Once David establishes the truth he heads off to the police station although Shona heads him off at the desk and stops him showing the evidence to the police.  Once home David sits Max down and tells him that he needs to stop the crap with Daniel and reform (above).  But is it Max or his inherited genes?

Linda Hancock (formerly Armstrong) is back on the Street and everyone is trying to keep the events surrounding Joseph's disappearance a secret.  Once the now single Dev spots a single lady in the bar of the Rovers and in front of Bernie he goes into seductive mode and offers Linda a drink and tells the story of Joseph and his unscrupulous grandmother Bernie.  Once he is finished Jenny decides it is time to reveal that Linda is of course Joseph's other grandmother.  Despite it all Linda is forgiving and decides not to hold it against the family - after all the loft in which Joseph hid is almost part of the family too!  So she is about to Streetcar it off to the airport when Bernie decides to put the boot in saying she would do anything for her family.  Linda would do anything for her family too so the Streetcar does a smart U turn and Linda reappears at chez Ches to say that she wants a better catch up with her family (above).  And the most amazing part of this is that although we have not seen Jacqueline Leonard since March 2015 she hardly looks a day older!

Following a visit from the social worker there is a new scenario with Imran and Toyah.  As we know, due to infidelity once little Elsie leaves, Toyah will be pushing Imran out the front door faster than HS2 and their fostering will come to an end.  The social worker however is not aware of this and although Toyah and Imran are only foster carers it appears that the powers that be have decided they ought to have a chance to adopt Elsie.  No I don't get it either.  Toyah is totally non-plussed and repairs to Roy's Rolls where she encounters Abi and asks how her adoption of Jack is progressing; she also admits that things are not great between her and Imran.  Abi is totally confused having to pretend to knowing nothing about Imran's misbehaviour but covers quickly.  Adoption of Jack is going well - and everyone on the Street knows just how much Imran loves Toyah says Abi.  Toyah's resolve crumples immediately and once home has only three conditions for Imran: they draw a line under past events; that there are no other secrets and if they are going to do it they need to do it properly and get married.  Imran cannot believe any of it, denies there are any secrets and it looks like Elsie has new long term parents (and of course if you believe that you will believe anything!).  Cue big snog (above).

Sally has heard that her sister Gina is not well again - her bipolar has worsened.  She organises an online quiz with the factory team and we see some factory banter (hooray) - even if they are all a bit more distant than historically.  We do not see Gina but my guess is that Sally will find out that Gina needs some proper care and that Sally will leave for a few weeks leaving Tim in the tender care of Dr Elaine who has invested in a training programme, a stethoscope, a heart monitor (above) and a rectal thermometer.  Tim is particularly scared of the latter when it is explained where it goes.  Whilst Sally is running a quiz at the factory Tim and Elaine get into twitching playing the well known board game "Wingspan" where you collect birds spotted in your reserve (seriously).

In a scene we did not see the extended Barlow / McDonald family was at Oliver's grave as it was his birthday.  Main topic of conversation is Simon and Leanne are unhappy with Amy and how could she have gone out with Jacob after the pain he caused and everyone is falling out!

Meanwhile Adam has decided that offspring should be back on the menu and tells Sarah as much.  So when she gets home he is already dressed for action (above) and there is wine cooling and a couple of glasses.  Sarah is soon hot-footing it to the bedroom.  Outside Lydia is in Victoria Gardens and she is moving forward her plan to prove that Adam and the oyster eating man are one and the same as she uses two mobile phones to send messages back and forth (below).

Which wraps up this week.  As ever Imran has kept a secret which I reckon means that someone, somewhere will soon know about his time with Abi.  Somehow I don't think we will see Gina but Sally may well have to help her get better.  And now Adam appears to be sending Lydia messages as Oyster man!  Elsewhere I understand Cherylee Houston is having a holiday in Ambridge so I suspect that Linda will not see much of her whilst she has a stay on the Street.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 28 January 2022

Faye does not want to go back to prison so is covering up her connection to a possible crime whilst Emma is so freaked about it she attends Ted Spear's funeral and starts to bond with Ted's grandson until Faye sends her an urgent message with a "photofit" from the police of the girl in Ted's flat as seen by the delivery driver.  Even the best and brightest policeman living on Coronation Street cannot recognise the individual in the "drawing" (above) although it reminds him of "someone".  When he realises that it reminds him of Emma, Faye breaks down as if under a month of interrogation, waterboarding and truth drugs and tells Craig how the events unfolded.  Following some wise words from David (!) Craig, being an upstanding citizen and model policeman, is immediately converted into a Met Police employee and tells Faye that not only did he wish he had not heard what she had to say he is now going to start pretending that he never heard it!  Eh lad.  That might work in that there London but it butters no parsnips in Weatherfield.

Bernie has been banished, for about 30 seconds.  Poor little Joseph also does a complete U-turn in about 20 seconds flat as he listens to various people laying into Granny Bernie (above).  He admits that she is not to blame and that Hope cooked up the disappearance to the loft.  Whilst Bernie might be allowed back by Gemini it seems unlikely that the rest of t'Street, Dev, Ches or anyone else (and apparently Beth is highly distraught as she tears a huge strip off Dev in the shop because she donated Kirk's birthday meal to Dev's appeal, so much so that Evelyn actually stands up for her boss and tells Beth to stop slandering him; why is Beth nearly always so objectionable?) is likely to forgive her actions in taking half the money and not being entirely honest about events.  She of course was simply trying to help the family out from under the mountain that the quads have caused (and frankly someone in social services ought to be on the doorstep most days of the week didn't they?).

When Lydia tells Daniel that she has tickets to a "poetry slam" I thought my hearing was deficient so consulted that interwebby thingy - and  yes they do exist.  (Monday - Salford).  Well who knew?  Anyway it is complicated because apparently Daisy's "influencees" (that's not a word is it? - the kids who hang on her every social media post) are Daniel's pupils and her social media posts will do the trick in getting them to go to "consent workshops" which Max sees as less important than "AV Club" until David puts him straight.  For once Daniel actually tells Lydia that he is going to talk to Daisy before doing so and when Lydia collects him from the Rovers (Ken is babysitting whilst Daniel and Lydia get slammed) it does look as though Daniel is not entirely sure which of the two dizzy dollies he actually wants to be with for the evening - until Lydia lays the law down with a sharp word (above).

I feel for Ty - County's opposition only had 9 men on the pitch and County still failed to win.

Leo moves into the pub and then gets summoned to work to be sacked (I assume that they have now filled in all the sinkholes in Weatherfield).  Jenny takes pity and says he need not pay rent whilst job hunting.  The ripple effect is that because Daisy wants a holiday in Gran Canaria she asks Jenny for a rent holiday; Leo overhears and arranges for his father to sub him the rent so he is paying his way (above).

I suppose the best news is that Elaine is back and telling Sally she has bought the wrong birthday card for Tim and that they should not have decorated the hospital room with banners and balloons.  Faye tells them both to take a chill pill as it was stress that put Tim in hospital.  Sally and Elaine exchange looks, however!  And they continue to exchange barbs (above) even when at Tim's bedside.  And Sally has given up her political ambitions so will have time to care for Tim - but Elaine volunteers to move for a while so that she can look after Tim whilst Sal is at work.  Sal seems less than pleased by the kind offer which Tim immediately accepts.

Even now, several days later, I think I am worried about the storytelling skills at ITV at the moment.  For example Craig is now suffering exactly the same problem as faced by Roy only a few weeks ago.  What is the purpose of Ronnie?  Has Leo no savings to sustain himself?  Why has Elaine turned into the mother-in-law from hell?  Why is Beth that nasty?  Why did we not see Hope being hung, drawn and quartered?  Is Lydia a closet bunny boiler?  And honestly Faye how you could you put Craig in that position?  And Emma why were you chatting up the grandson at the funeral? No doubt all the questions and many more may be answered next week.
