Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 4 October 2024

Good evening.  Tonight is dominated by a rave outside the gates of the closed Nuttall's brewery where initially Ryan and subsequently another DJ (Chris) play catchy little beats for the residents to celebrate Paul's life.  Billy starts the day with a mahoosive hangover.  Bernie has already collected the ashes before Billy gets to the undertakers setting the day off to a worse start for Billy who is having to deal with Paul not hearing his final message as revealed by Bernie.  Formal permission for the road closure has not arrived but Kit is helping man the barriers and will flash his card if there are any queries.  Daniel wants Vera's and salmon and trout - no idea is Dev's response and nor have I.  Paul's ashes have pride of place adjacent to the decks - Bernie has split them and hands a box to Billy as the rest will be sent into space.  Billy starts shouting at Bernie who tries to explain but she soon shouts back.

Andy Garland was in jail with David and Paul so turns up at the rave to announce he has gone straight.  They recall "Minty" as he always had a packet and the freshest breath in the prison.  Bernie and Billy both fume separately on opposite sides of the Street.  Billy makes up his mind and dashes through the ravers, grabs the urn and returns to his flat, where he holds the urn tightly.

Gail reappears to announce the Platts will be homeless as she is selling the gaff and putting them on the Street.  It is the only way to meet the Turkish hospital costs.  Ken tries to talk Daniel out of using Bertie's Trust Fund.  Daniel asks Adam's advice who reveals that Damon has offered to pay with the  money stolen in the armed robbery - which Daniel says Sarah must reject and that Sarah should not be told about it.  Adam pops along to the jail to see Damon.  Damon says they have both lost Sarah - but he can supply the money Bethany needs (and by the way he still loves Sarah).   Adam tells Daniel who tells Adam that he will do anything rather than use Damon's money.  Daniel also forces Adam to delete the voicemail - but honestly I am not convinced that he did so.  Gail is going to get a bridging loan until the house is sold.  David is booking a homeless shelter for his Christmas lunch.

Even Ken gets in a quick rave.  And then Bernie spots the missing urn.

Carla is tetchy and it gets worse when she opens a mystery brown envelope which Ryan delivers.  Ryan thinks it is about the ABH charge and likely community service sentence.  Ryan later reads the content of the envelope and finds it is the decree absolute for Carla's divorce from Peter.  And whilst Carla knew it was coming, so is death, but when it happens it is a shock.

Kirk is setting up a "Singles to Mingle" group - but fails to tempt DS Swain (whose right arm mysteriously rarely moves) to join him and Ryan.  I am worried about Kirk - he gets "Sleeping with the Enemy" {Julia Roberts} confused with "Sleepless in Seattle" {Meg Ryan} - it is enough to keep me awake at night.

Fiz and Tyrone initially tell Hope and Ruby that there is no baby and that it was a false alarm.  Hope consults Sam who is able to recall Toyah's false alarm so Hope concludes that Fiz must have cancer as well.  Fiz later corrects the record admitting she is still pregnant and that next week she will go to the hospital for a termination in what I consider to be a completely erroneous approach as neither of them are really old enough to grasp the explanation.  Ty and Fiz believe it is for the best.

On the other side of Weatherfield Joel's father wants to see whoever is in charge of the search for his son - but is ignored by DS Swain who wants to talk to Dee Dee who does not believe Joel is dead although his father does abd DS Swain thinks Dee Dee should hold the same opinion.  Why?

Eventually Bernie sits down with Billy (and Paul).  She tells a story about her father's ashes and says that they both have to let Paul go and both cry.  Later Bernie watches the ravers out of the window and asks Billy what do Dev and God have in common?  Apparently they both move in very mysterious ways.   And Billy realises that Paul would indeed love to be sent up to space as Billy admits he is coming round to the idea.  At the end the Street is illuminated by fireworks and Billy apologies to Todd.

In other news the Wednesday night episode was written by Jan McVerry and Jonathan Harvey. It is (at least for now) the latter's last episode for Coronation Street having written 331 since joining the team in 2004.  We have him to thank for the development of Todd over the years as well as writing for Sean.  I just wanted to thank him for his contribution and to offer our thanks for his sterling efforts.  I have known for a long time that seeing his name at the start of episode was welcoming as I knew it would have a little extra somewhere.  Above all may I cite Gail's monologue following Aidan's death in 2018.  I believe it moved everyone as she was at the time worried about David and the news of Aidan's departure was spreading through the Street.  Thank you Jonathan.

Coronation Street Episode Review Sunday 11 February 2024

In the UK we have had a few gaps and this episode should have been broadcast last Wednesday - although it is not obvious.  There is another catchup episode coming on Tuesday too.  Sam does not make his chess championship because a somewhat hungover Simon, who was still well over the drink/drive limit, was browbeaten to drive him whilst Nick was attending to something which Nick considered more important (and which no-one knows about and he refuses to talk about).  Simon crashes Leanne's car (a 2009 reg).  Simon and Sam leave the scene of the incident and Simon later has to admit events to Leanne, including being over the limit.  Kev recovers the vehicle.

Bethany's double dealing starts to unwind when Daniel answers her phone to find he is talking to "Chit Chat" about the article and not some glossy upmarket magazine.  She is forced to admit that she has written about Ryan, Daisy and Daniel - but she changed the names to protect the innocent.  Daniel reads it and accepts that the article is well written and suggests Bethany needs to tell Daisy about it.

Damon and Sarah are house hunting - Sarah has accepted that she will have to leave the flat and Damon agrees to a house with a garden.  Adam finds out from Dee Dee about Damon's attempted manipulation of Ed's insurance claim and uses it as another weapon to attack Damon - also claiming that he has moved on from Sarah and with the rest of his life.  I am not sure he has moved on that much as he accompanies John Perry to the police station to give a knowingly false statement over Natasha's murder.  It all sounds fairly airy-fairy to me but Adam is convinced it ties in adequately with the known facts to provide grounds for an investigation by the police into Harvey's probably wrongful conviction.

Lauren needs cash for her exam entrance - which she struggles to find and Daniel offers to fund it - she later says thank you so he has lent her the money - but she is struggling at the moment financially.

Simon spends the rest of the episode skulking around corners and hiding from Nick.  He leaves a message on Peter's answering machine complaining at being abandoned, although he then deletes the message.  He is a lost soul at the moment.  He packs to run away to London but Leanne stops him.  To save Simon's backside as her surrogate son, Leanne tells Nick that there was a brake failure.  However the truth is unlikely to remain a secret on the Street given that the axle is damaged and will cost more than a small bump.

More seriously when explaining to Adam about the false insurance claim Dee Dee also told Adam about the insider trading in the Newton & Ridley shares undertaken by Ronnie and so the web of deceit starts to unravel - and is Joel anywhere near as perfect as he tries to be?  Even he struggles to maintain his facade and he does not seem to be run off his feet like other solicitors!

So, episodes this week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and I think we will then be back on schedule!

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 12 January 2024

I think we all know that Dev cannot count and so we are tonight celebrating the 19th birthday of Aadi and Asha which in terms of US soap age changes is minor!  Meanwhile Aadi has a hell of a hangover and is dosing himself with painkillers.  Asha is treated to a fuss by Dev and breakfast.  Asha and Nina are still apologising to each other over Isla etc.  Nina and Aadi are also still talking about the "kiss".  They both agree to never mention it again - OK?  OK!  Aadi has bought a bracelet for Asha and she observes he only buys nice presents when he is feeling guilty.  And he is looking guilty!  Nina springs to his defence and Asha demands to know what has happened.  Nina admits they kissed.  Asha is distraught.  The birthday lunch is never served.  Aadi cancels the planned party at his flat and is reduced to solo drinking.  Asha eventually lands up at the flat and gives an apparently drunk and comatose Aadi a piece of her mind over letting his lips touch those of Nina!  She never wants to speak to him again.  Asha later tells Amy (who was going to give Aadi a second chance) that Aadi is dead to her now.

In a sign of how the mighty have fallen we are subjected to Carla complaining about her missing banana.  Bobby is responsible, of course, as he is later for organising further mayhem at the factory.  He then calls her a sad cat lady in the making.  Bobby tells her that she should "put herself out there again".  Sarah rescues Bobby from the sack or worse by announcing that he is back to top of the sales chart!  Secretly Carla smiles.

Damon is worming his way around the place - Ed admits to Sarah that he is working for Damon who is trying to turn his life around.  Sarah bumps into Damon on the Street later in front of his expensive car and suggests that they go for a drink.  Later Damon returns to the Street and finds his car has undergone "unscheduled disassembly" - or been crushed!  Damon makes a decision that he has to leave Weatherfield and visits Sarah's flat to tell her he will be departing.  He tells Sarah that he believes Harvey was behind the car's crushing.  He is going to keep Sarah safe.  But Sarah stops him at the door and snogs his face off.

Gemma and Chesney have a meeting with social services - but despite their pleading the chances of Gemma returning home are not looking any brighter at the moment.  They assure each other that they will make it through this together (but apart at the moment).  And in a news release Linda will be arriving on Monday.

Cassie wants to spend the money she has stolen and suggests a meal to Evelyn.  She is later caught counting the dough by Hope who demands a cut for her silence.  Once PC Tinker admits that money was stolen from Terry as well as the assault (£1500 for a puppy is daylight robbery as well) it does not take long for Evelyn to add it all up and demands the truth from Cassie.  Terry cannot be charged because there was no money - just puppies.  Cassie admits she found the money on the way out and she knew the police would not charge Evelyn.  And she has not spent the money on drugs.  Mother and daughter argue themselves to a standstill as neither will give ground.

Amy wants to see Aadi and Gav is able to enable entry into the flat using his debit card (that old trick) where she finds Aadi completely out of it, unresponsive and a constant unwelcome beeping noise from a monitor.  An ambulance is summoned.  In the hospital waiting area Dev has just arrived when a red jacketed professional reveals that Aadi ahs suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, probably an old boiler (hardly an accurate description of Courtney).  Having seen Aadi, Dev tries to talk Asha down - is a kiss that important?   Roy Cropper is talking bats as the cafe is cleaned but Nina is not listening - he proffers advice to Nina when Mary pops in to ask for change and to ask after Aadi - which is the first Nina has heard of his illness.  Asha and Aadi apologise to each other.  Aadi tries to convince Asha that it meant nothing.  However Asha has made a decision and when Nina arrives they sit down and Asha announces
"we are over".

Roll credits.

Depending on personal events I may (or may not be here) for the next two weeks as I am away to Madeira for some winter sun.  I was not overly enthralled this evening so a break may do me good and I hope that my return will enable engagement with Street happenings.
