Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 4 August 2023

To the Rovers Return where Jenny is facing facts; the changes in lifestyle are disastrous for the little local boozer; the margins are very tight, the punters getting fewer and costs are rising rapidly.  And going mean on meat does nothing for your reputation.  Jenny tries all the tricks, 50p on a pint, £10 extra rent for Glenda, halving the shifts of all the staff and the gap gets no closer, not helped when the less-regular regulars of yesteryear head along to the back yard of Number 3 for darts and supermarket booze.  Needless to say Jenny can hear them and they all get banned - including Sean - whose darts playing is decidedly dangerous.  Even Daisy tells Jenny to sell up to the brewery and whilst Jenny makes contact with the boss his view is that they are planning on selling pubs - not buying.  Sean and Glenda talk Jenny into a big push on Monday evening when Philip Newton (not Henry) will be coming to see if there is any potential.  Apparently the King's Head and the Station are no more and the Flying Horse is about to take a dive.  They make plans to get the punters in on Monday - or will it be the Night the Rovers Died?

Sarah has yet to tell Harry and Gail is providing support to Sarah during this difficult time.  Gail feels that Adam could have timed his request for a divorce rather better as she explains to Ken in the Street - whilst Ken explains in reply that maybe Sarah should not have had an affair in the first place.  Honours even I reckon.  Sarah herself is more realistic - she and Adam chat and she accepts that she was at fault and that the best solution is to sign the papers and move on.  Adam wants to continue to be a father to Harry and together they tell the little boy that there will be no baby - but not that they are splitting up yet.  Gail denies the fall out with Ken - being minor compared with the ding dongs with that Grimshaw woman but Sarah explains that they need to accept reality.

Stu is concerned that Yasmeen and Roy might be enjoying more than mere friendship and is feeling excluded when another jolly is being discussed as Yasmeen recalls her historic interest in art - but many years ago before life intervened.  Alya seeks to work some magic and talks Stu into arranging an art class for two.  Yasmeen grabs the wrong end of the stick thinking it is for her to take Roy - until Alya explains that it was intended for Stu and Yasmeen to spend time together.  Problem unravelled, Yasmeen decides the solution is for the art event to be in the living room - her behind the easel and Stu in the altogether as her subject.  Eliza later sees the picture and feels that Stu should be wearing a jacket which does not need ironing!  Then Eliza's phone goes - she claims it is Harriet but when she gets in the garden we see her talking to a middle-aged man - and she obviously does not want Stu to know about it or overhear the call - maybe someone she has met at the holiday club?

Gemma admits to Chesney that she is working for Newton & Ridley but she will not be seeing Henry Newton and indeed he is not involved with the cider line she is launching.  Needless to say Henry turns up to collect Gemma and Chesney sees Gemma getting in his car - so he promptly dives into a deep pool of depression over her duplicity.  On her return, when challenged she says that she knew he would react like this which was why she did not tell him.  Whilst Henry is expecting her for another job next week Gemma tells Chesney that she will not be doing any more for Newton and Ridley.

Bernie is trying to use her spiritual skills to ease Paul's problems - and maybe the positive energy is having some benefits.  She cannot source a Himalayan Gong but was offered the use of Ken's bells!  However she has a recording and when she turns it on it almost works as an enema!  Bernie tells him to bathe in the sound.  However Paul is able to talk to Bernie and how she will be suffering now and in the short term - but eventually she knows he will be free and she needs to accept that side as well.  Paul also says that he would want no other mum and that Kel was to blame - not Bernie.  Bernie responds by telling him how strong he is and they hug.

Tonight I felt the stories chugged along - touching moment between Bernie and Apollo whilst the Rovers crew go from failing to support the darts night to overkill to keep things going.  Are Jenny's days as mein host at the Rovers coming to an end?  If so will Jenny depart.  In terms of character returns she has been a huge success and I hope the writing is not on the wall.

Oh and I cannot resist!  As I write this Southampton are where I hope they will be at the other end of the season - top of the Championship!

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 8th of August 8.30pm

Steve McDonald does something quite valiant for downtrodden Abi, who feels that her life is spiralling out of control again. Her kids have visited and in her eyes, it's not been that successful, as they wanted to go 'home.' So she gets them picked up and flees from Eileen's. Steve finds her and does something that not many have done for Abi, he listens to her.

This scene is really touching, as he then talks of his own loss and the mistakes he has made. This means that Abi feels like she is on an equal footing. But, this is Steve McDonald we are talking about and for the women in Weatherfield, he is George Clooney, so she-she makes a pass at him and they kiss. Two seconds later, Tracey arrives, none the wiser. It may not be November yet, but I spy some impending fireworks!

We go to Weatherfield General next, and we seem to be at the hospital more times than the cast of Casualty. And for those of you like shots of Rana's tears, you are in luck. Rana's panto villain mother says she is not welcome at her father's bedside. Imran has told Rana that her dad has had a stroke. She is really angry, as she explains to her mother that if she had contacted her, she could have helped and he might not be in this position. This is where Rana needs to force her way into the hospital room, as she is an adult, and her mother needs to move on. But, for more drama - you can see where this one is headed.

Gemma is feeling disappointed that her dream of moving into the Rovers with Jack Whitehall, I mean Henry Newton has gone sour. For me, Henry is part Nigel Havers and Hugh Grant. He does not feel real to me, and I have trouble connecting with him or this storyline. We could have had an Eliza Dolittle style plotline here, but instead, he flips flops from "I love you, Gemma" to hatching another scam. Not really sure who he is, a wasted opportunity but he is underwritten.

The real drama in the big reveal of the new landlord and landlady of the Rovers is the fact that Jenny is one half of the double act. Gemma flips out and fur flies, and she leaves the pub, feeling embarrassed and betrayed. Jenny is grateful that Liz is there to help her run the place, and Ms McDonald and Johnny share an awkward glance. People mocked Peter being behind the bar, with the temptation of drink and he did ok. But, this is something quite different. And Adams Family/The Connors will be the other side of the bar, dressed in black, mulling over how best to help Johnny, when the proverbial hits the fan.

Sally decides to have a fundraiser for Jack, in Speed Daal and Yasmeen is not impressed, as these two are rivals in true soap tradition. Geoff though, says it's fine. I think she should stay at the hospital, as we would still see him, given that someone is admitted there every episode.

There are many different plot lines, jostling for your attention this week. But, the main thing is with Jenny behind the bar, I cannot see it being dull. Have you seen her pull a pint?

See ya next week!

Gemma and Henry - what's going on?

I’ve been suspicious from the very start, but really, please, what on earth is going on? Well, to answer my own question, we know that Henry is ‘involved’ with Gemma for a bet. It seems it is as crude as that.

So, we have the toff with the working-class girl - all brash and brazen and on the surface with no finesse, at least not of the superficial kind. But there is an irony here, and that is that though Gemma appears to have no class, at least superficially, I repeat, she is in possession of some excellent qualities – and she has them in spades.

Gemma is the embodiment of loyalty. It was Gemma who went back into the Register Office room to check that Chesney was ok after the wedding collapsed. It was Gemma who devoted herself to Rita when she had a brain tumour diagnosed and was the best friend anyone could have had.

Gemma has her rough edges, but she is decidedly a good person, despite her background and some of the friends she hung around with in her earlier days.

Why then is Henry on the scene? Does Gemma really want to be with him? Is Henry engaged in some kind of social experimentation? It was confirmed in Friday’s second episode that Henry was going out with Gemma for a bet. Such an undertaking is at best stupid and at worst cruel. It will end, Gemma will be hurt and Henry will continue his life pretty much unscathed by the experience. His attitude towards Gemma can be summed in some of the words of the secret telephone call he made. ‘Can you believe the cheeky wench tried to finish with me?’ Wench! Are we in a Shakespearian tavern in 1590? Heaven help us if there are people still referring to women as wenches!

It could have been so much better. Henry’s snobbery could have been exposed by Gemma and her ‘rough diamond’ character could have genuinely turned Henry’s head and maybe they could have had an honest relationship. The storyline could have been treated with a light, deft touch and Gemma could have mocked him, gently, because no one can help the class that they were born into. As it stands, we are left with an untapped vein of humour and if our favourite street needs anything right now, it is a sizeable dose of humour.

New Corrie star George Banks on being Gemma's Rockefella

There's a good interview with George Banks, who is the new addition to Coronation Street, playing Henry Newton.  Or as I like to think of him, playing Rockefella to Gemma's Cinderella.

Radio Times have the interview in which George says he was over joyed to find out he'd got the role in Corrie. He says: "I couldn’t believe it! I found out I had an audition on the Monday and then I came up on the Wednesday. I hadn’t heard by the weekend, so I thought I hadn’t got it, but my agent called me very early in the morning telling me I got the part. I told my wife not to tell anyone else – I really wanted to keep it a secret and try and watch the episode with my family, but I thought better of it and let the cat out of the bag.

"I left drama school in 2009 and I’ve done lots of theatre and plays that I’ve really loved and enjoyed. But doing TV was the scary new thing that I hadn’t done properly before. My first scene was with Malcolm Hebden [Norris] in the Kabin and he was very funny – he knew I was nervous but he was wonderful. Everyone here is so lovely to work with and I just settled right in.

You can read the full interview here.

Why Gemma and Henry could be classic Corrie gold

One of the highlights of Coronation Street, for this fan, right now is the Gemma and Henry storyline. Henry, or 'Newt' as he's known to his friends, will of course turn out to be Henry Newton.

And if that name sounds familiar, then it should.

Henry Newton is heir to the Newton part of the Newton & Ridley brewery who supplies the beers to all the best backstreet pubs in the Manchester area, the Rovers Return included.

But Gemma doesn't know this yet. She has no idea who Henry is, only that she fancies him. And he fancies her. What's not to like?

Well, the previews already tell us that Liz will be the one to rain on Gemma's parade when she tells her who her new fella is. Gemma goes into a slump, thinking that she's nowhere near good enough for Newt.

I say, give it time and let's hope Gemma and Newt end up behind the bar of the Rovers together. Now wouldn't that be something? Gemma as the new Bet Lynch!
