Coronation Street Blog Interview: Debbie Rush

Corrie fans were stunned at the sight of Anna Windass emerging from the shadows of the builder’s yard on Thursday’s Coronation Street (31 May). Aren’t such surprises great? Yes! But, wasn’t she supposed to be in jail? Yes! And tonight, Gary’s madcap plan of bringing Phelan back to Weatherfield all made sense – his Mam had been released from prison, and considering all that she had suffered at Pat's hands, there was only one woman who could and should get to bring him down. Gary gave her that opportunity.

We attended an exclusive preview of this week’s episodes last month, and had the privilege of knowing Anna was coming back, and sitting down with Debbie Rush to chat all about it! It felt deliciously secret, and my anticipation of the fan reaction only added to the enjoyment.

Debbie was determined that nobody would find out that she would be returning, so much so that she worried her social media profile would give it away. "Our viewers and everyone have always been so lovely and complimentary” she says, “so I just went quiet for a couple of months, ‘cos I didn’t want to tell any lies to our viewers.”

Tonight we saw Anna deliver the fatal plunge of a knife into Phelan's chest and unflinchingly tell him that people like him never win as he died before her eyes. Asked if she feels it is a fitting end, Debbie says “Yes, she had to be the one to kill him, he was an evil vicious man and Anna was his first victim on that street, so she had to be the one that killed him off, and I think that our viewers and the nation will thank her for it!”

Might there be any possibility for Anna that he’s still alive? “We do see him being zipped up in a body bag. She’s done the fatal wound and she waited till he drew his last breath. So she knows his dead.” confirms Debbie.

Describing what it was like to film the scene, she says “It was great! We have stunt people on the set and we had paramedics. A lot of work went into knowing exactly where Anna had to stab him, without there being too much blood spurting out everywhere, but it would be fatal when he pulled it out.”

Did she feel daunted by the scenes? “Because I know him, no” Debbie says. “But when we’re filming, I go somewhere else, so it always feels daunting and the adrenaline kicks in. It’s my job, and I love doing it.”

We’re told that Anna doesn’t stay around and asked if she would return to the show at some stage in the future, Debbie says, “Never say never. I’ve been incredibly lucky, I had a really great time there. I’m in a privileged position, they seem to like what I do. We’ll see what happens. I needed a break.”

I asked Debbie about her favourite Anna moments. “There are so many.” she told me. “I still like when the Windasses arrived in the van at the beginning. They thought the Clampetts were turning up and it was such a special time for us off screen as well as on. We were doing a dream job, and felt incredibly lucky. So, that would be a standout.” She continues, “When Owen left, I was filming those scenes and literally feeling bereft that one of my best friends had left, and when I watch them back on screen, they were great moments. This will be another one. I’ve really enjoyed doing this. Someone has referred to me as Anna Badass, that’s great! I’ve had too many moments, it’s amazing.”

Asked why she feels Anna’s story has gripped the nation, Debbie says, “When we had Richard Hillman, he was a great baddie and we’ve been waiting for a long time for someone to come along who we know isn’t real but is someone who we can all vent our anger at and shout at the telly. I think it’s been great in that aspect, and that people have really got involved. He’s been so vile to everybody.”

One particular stand out scene in tonight’s episodes (1 June) was the one between Anna and Eileen. Asked if she enjoyed it, Debbie says “Yes, because Anna does not have any animosity whatsoever towards Eileen. Eileen was as much a victim as Anna was, just in a completely different way. When Anna went to prison, she felt let down by Eileen because Eileen didn’t believe her – she nearly believed her but Phelan twisted things – so Anna went off to prison and everyone on the street thought she’d lost the plot. So I think at the end when you see the two women come together, it is completely Corrie. But I also think that in the times we live, it’s completely womanhood. These two women recognise that they’ve both been a victim of a really powerful monster, so we had to see them come together and join forces as heroic women.” With such scenes so important to and inherent in Corrie’s inception, I felt myself that it was a welcome return to see such a powerful depiction of support and solidarity between two women on the street.

Debbie is still recharging her batteries since leaving Corrie, but says “I’ve absolutely loved being part of this great show. I’ve watched this since I was a little girl. It was something that I really wanted to do and I was lucky enough to do it. I’d never say never about going back. I think it’s a great job. When I came back I just loved it, it was so nice to be part of that family again.”

Mikey North, who plays her onscreen son Gary, was also there on the day, and their closeness was evident. When asked about this, Debbie says, “that’s what is hard, because there’s a good few in the cast that I’m really close to. I get to speak to them all the time. Sue and I have been out for dinner and things. They’ll always be my friends and that won’t ever change.”

I very much enjoyed chatting with Debbie, and thought she put in a brilliant performance in Phelan's final episode. It will be interesting to see where her acting career takes her next, and I wish her every success with it.

To Kate Oates from a Corrie superfan

Criticising Coronation Street can be quite cathartic when you’re a super fan. It’s good to share thoughts on the way we think Corrie is going, what we like and what we don’t like. Despite being in my early thirties I feel like I’m part of the Corrie ‘old guard’ – someone who loves the good old days, the classic and iconic characters like Bet Lynch and Hilda Ogden, and wish today’s Corrie was a bit more like back then. I took great comfort in a recent interview Corrie boss Kate Oates gave, in which she acknowledged people like me exist, and writers do try to keep us happy. Not exclusively, but we do matter to the powers that be.

Kate spoke about the recent criticism Corrie has received on the darker storylines. She also mentions her personal preference for darker comedy rather than slapstick. It’s been something we’ve talked about on the blog. The performances of cast members such as Debbie Rush and Connor McIntyre have been sublime, and Corrie for me, generally is very good at the moment. But negative comments on the darker turn Corrie has taken since Kate took over are well founded I think. In recent times we’ve seen Pat watch Michael die, then shoot three people in cold blood, setting one of them on fire in a gruesome car explosion. Billy’s been stabbed in the leg and almost bled to death. Ken was shoved down the stairs and nearly died. Rita had the brain tumour – quite what that was all about I’m still not sure, it seemed like they threw it in to give her a storyline but didn’t quite work in my opinion. Michelle’s stalker. Bethany’s sex grooming. HIV. Drug addiction. False imprisonment. Racism. Daniel and Sinead. Chesney’s brick to the face. Mary’s meltdown and the arrival of her dull but delicious long lost son. Aidan and Maria’s affair. Gary's 'death'. The fake baby. The miscarriages and still births. Quick sand(!?). Not to mention the many glaring continuity errors.  Flippin ‘eck it’s been hard going. Don’t get me wrong, as I’ve said there have been some amazing performances and as always the hilarious asides from the likes of Gemma, David Platt and Audrey have given us some much needed comic relief. But the sinister goings on in Weatherfield for many of us have been a bit much. That’s why some recent developments have given me some optimism. Before I get onto that though, one more negative. Sean Tully. What the hell. It’s like he’s been possessed by ghosts of Rovers barmaids past. I love a bit of camp, I really do. But shoehorning lines in that hark back to the good old days without the charm and likeability of that era, or of the character, just looks forced. I feel like they don’t know where to put him. How he ended up living with Norris, and now Tyrone and the kids is beyond me. I just don’t see much more longevity in that character. But who knows.

Now for the positives. Roy and Carla. I love it. I know we’ve been here before but it’s just so beautiful to watch. When she asked him to marry her, in jest, the other day I could have cried (who am I kidding - I did). So much warmth and affection between them. It really works for me.

Audrey, Gail and Sarah sipping wine in the lap dancing bar. Classic. Sue Nicholls needs more screen time. PLEASE! And I love the mature Sarah. I see glimmers of tortured, struggling Gail in her. I’ve commented on Tina O’Brien’s performances in the past, around the time of evil Callum's demise. I think she’s really blossomed since coming back.

Gemma, noisy and frantic as she is, is great. Should she and Chesney get together? I’m not sure he could cope with her, but there’s something there, and he needs to get back to his old self. Perhaps she can help.

Steve and Tracy. I didn’t want it to happen but I like it. It brings so much comedy and has all the elements of a good old fashioned Corrie relationship. Tracy wears the trousers and apprentice-battleaxe Amy adds that extra bit of stress for Steve – he plays henpecked so well. Steve’s a bit of a cartoon character with his hilarious facial expressions and body language. We need that in Corrie right now.

The extension of the set is exciting. I’m not sure how a small neighbourhood can accommodate another grocery store and coffee shop, but it opens up so many more opportunities for the show and I’m all for seeing more of Weatherfield.

I recently wrote a love letter to Corrie. And there’s so much to look forward to in 2018. Let’s hope writers get the mix right. High drama is always welcome. But Kate - don’t forget me, and many others like me, who love the charm of the good old days. And despite all the criticism, personally, I think you’re doing great.  Still a superfan.

Coronation Street Blog Interview with Debbie Rush

I had the pleasure of recently meeting and interviewing Debbie Rush, who plays Anna Windass in Coronation Street.

Debbie first of all gave away a few details first about her upcoming storyline in which she becomes ensnared in Phelan’s web. She collapses and is taken to hospital. Kevin visits her there, and adds to her woes by telling her that it is over between them and that he must prioritise Jack. Anna is devastated and it feels to her as if her support system is slipping away. She’s preparing to return to prison when she spots an overcoat. She puts it on and furtively heads towards an open door. Anna goes on the run.

Then, Tim tells Faye about her mum’s escape and it is now that Faye sees the gleeful expression on Phelan’s face. She then confronts him about what really happened between him and Anna. Faye is now finally convinced that Phelan is a liar and tells Seb that Phelan is a liar and that Anna did not push the ladder. However, Seb doesn’t believe her and as a result, Faye dumps him. At the same time, Anna cowers in a deserted building – terrified and alone. When in prison she can’t get anyone to believe what Phelan has done.

Viewers will know that Debbie Rush, who plays Anna Windass is leaving, but we don’t know how.  Debbie Rush tells us that many people come up to her to express their loathing of Pat Phelan from old ladies to teenage boys, showing how unanimously, Phelan is loathed. Naturally there would be a sense of justice if it was Anna who finally brought Phelan down, but there was no confirmation nor denial of this.

Debbie said that she had found the whole experience of acting out the scenes with Phelan exhausting, but even more so she has found it exhilarating. She is, she says, someone who throws herself into her acting and so does Connor McIntyre, so it’s great to play the cat and mouse game with someone who is just as keen as she is to get it all absolutely right.

When Phelan left the cobbles the first time, Anna was well aware that there existed unfinished business between them. Since then, their dislike of each other has been bubbling under the surface and for a while they stayed out of each other’s way.

In other storylines, Debbie told us that when Owen left, Anna was devastated – he was the love of her life. Then, of course, Anna was badly burnt and her legs were in a terrible state. She felt ugly and undesirable, which got in the way of Kevin and Anna’s relationship, as well as affecting her confidence generally.

Debbie spoke passionately about the rape of Anna by Phelan. She is keen to put over her belief that Phelan raped her and that she was abused and that therefore her story is on a par with the Bethany grooming story, in that both were coerced against their will.

After Debbie and Connor have finished a scene, Debbie said that they always have a cuddle, which is a relief from the dark areas into with both actors must travel. Debbie spoke of how the two of them arrive on set in a jovial mood. Then, when the time approaches for action, each actor distances themselves from each other in readiness for their role, as they transform into their respective characters. Anna admits that the dark places they go to can be terrifying.

Debbie has been on the cobbles for nine years and says it feels it’s time for a change and wants to seek work elsewhere, though she is very grateful for the fantastic storylines she’s been involved in. She’s very excited about new opening and potential opportunities. When asked if the door to the cobbles would remain open, Debbie claims that she’s not sure. She had nothing but praise too for all the people she’s worked with at Corrie and admits she’ll miss them dearly.

So Anna leaves at the end of January 2018 and wanted to make the point that she thinks the snobbery that once dogged soap operas, has now seriously diminished. I think she may be right.

Debbie Rush teases Anna's exit story

Debbie Rush, who plays Anna Windass in Coronation Street was interviewed on ITV's This Morning this week.  She talks about leaving Coronation Street and about Pat Phelan too, of course.

Debbie says that Pat Phelan is "one of the most evil baddies that we've ever had!"

Talking about working with actor Connor McIntyre, who plays Phelan, she says: "Every time we're put together for a scene we know it's not going to be nice. It's never nice. So every time we have a scene we have a little cuddle beforehand and we'll have a little cuddle afterwards, but just as we start to roll, we'll just give each other "the look", we'll move our heads away and then we're in with hatred!"

Talking about her exit storyline, she says: "Some people think I'm being killed off by Phelan and some people think I'm going to be sent down, so I'll leave that there for now..."  Debbie also stays that Anna "has still got a little bit of power left over Phelan" with regards to getting Nicola back into Phelan's life, which he wants more than anything.

The Ruination of Anna Windass

This was originally posted on State of the Street, reposted here with permission.
Anna Windass has been on our screens since 2008. Right from the start, she and her common law husband, Eddie, were portrayed as people that were a bit or a lot dodgey, from a rough background. They hired Joe McIntyre to build their kitchen then refused to pay for it, leading Joe ultimately to bankruptcy. Anna has always been shown to be a fiercely protective mother though perhaps hasn't always made the best judgements but she'll do anything for those she loves. She'll also turn on anyone she may previously shown friendship and affection for if they so much as look at her or her family sideways.

No, Anna has never really been a sympathetic character overall. Just when you think she's showing signs of improvement, doing kind things for friends, and being generally nice, something will happen and she'll be cold-shouldering, unfairly accusing, shrieking and slapping. The object of her anger will then be her enemy for life,  until of course, she realizes the error of her ways and then butter wouldn't melt. She will apologize but I don't know how anyone can trust her not to lost her temper again and go off on them.

Ah yes, that temper has got her into trouble more than once. She'll regret it but it doesn't matter. She doesn't learn. And she can be vicious with it, even towards her beloved teenage daughter who has been the cause of Anna's temper on more than one occasion. She'll let her mother down and end up being shut out, screamed at, even slapped. It's no wonder Faye thinks Anna hates her. It doesn't take much for Anna to turn her back on Faye on a regular basis. She certainly wasn't too nice to Faye after discovering that surprise pregnancy, calling her names and all sorts. Remember, she coldly turned against Roy, her friend and employer, after he assaulted Gary. She knew Roy had been tested to his limits by teenage bullies and was pushed to the edge. Roy shouldn't have resorted to violence, but Gary shouldn't have broken into the cafe to try to rob it but Anna didn't see it that way, assigning no responsibility to Gary at all.

We know that Phelan used her badly, forced her by blackmail into having sex to let Gary off the legal hook. I'm not making excuses for Phelan over that. She didn't deserve that treatment and did what she did because she didn't think she had a choice. Phelan knew she wouldn't let Gary go to jail. She has told a few people over the years. Some believed her. Some have not. Phelan has groomed everyone into believing he's a nice guy, just misunderstood so Anna looks like a vindictive liar. She's at it again, this time revealing the past to Phelan's newly found daughter, Nicola who seems to believe her, or at least, is smart enough to consider that it's the truth and investigate on her own. She doesn't know Phelan well enough yet to trust him 100% so Anna's story hasn't fallen on stony ground this time.

It doesn't seem to matter that she's been a good and loyal friend, or a caring mother figure. She can flip personalities like a pancake on a griddle, soft and puffy one minute, sizzling the next. This is not a new thing. This isn't a new aspect of her personality since her encounter with Phelan all those years ago. It's one thing to get angry when someone you're trying to help rejects you, it's quite another to be seen screaming vicious insults at that someone in public but that's what Anna does.

Therefore, it annoys me when fans say that The Powers That Be are ruining Anna because the actress is leaving.  This is an accusation you hear often when actors decide to go on to other things. They make you dislike the character so you won't protest so much when they're gone. Lately, we've seen Anna going up against Seb and Faye after trying to help Seb's family. When it all went wrong, she was accused of calling Social Services. She didn't, but nobody involved believes her and because of that, Faye and Seb are in "I hate you" mode. Anna has begged them to believe her and when that doesn't happen, she pushes and pushes until one of them lashes out. What does Anna do? She caterwauld like a banshee, shrieks and insults these children and they both felt the heat of her fingers across their faces (in different scenes). Nice.

Now Anna's also being accused of causing Seb to fall off a ladder and Phelan is manipulating the evidence in that direction. Nicola has uncovered another devastating truth about her mother and Phelan that will reinforce Anna's story and realize that he's not the man he's led her to believe he is. He'll lose the daughter he was so proud to have found, the one for whom  he thought he could redeem himself. If that happens, he'll have nothing to lose.  Anna's been a thorn in his side for a long time and this might be the way to get rid of her. He'll make sure Anna is ruined, a pariah until she's in jail or has to leave town.

I've never been a fan of Anna all that much. She's had her good moments when she's been loyal but then she's also had so many moments when she's been disloyal or unnecessarily harsh. She didn't call Social Services, but if she hadn't badgered him trying to convince him of it, Seb wouldn't have lost his temper and shouted at her. When Seb insulted her in the cafe, his heart broken after losing his siblings into Care, his mother back on drugs and assumed she called Social Services causing it all, Anna changed from begging him to believe it wasn't her in one breath to screaming at him and slapping him in the next. A 16 year old kid who needed support, not abuse. And she wouldn't leave it alone, she practically chased him out of the cafe trying to drag him back inside. It's no wonder he was so distracted he was careless on the ladder and fell. You could lay that blame at her door even if she didn't actually push the ladder.

Has Anna been ruined? I don't think so. I think she's just been revealed. She might have a good and kind side to her but she's also got a streak of nasty inside like Blackpool Rock. Always has had.

I rest my case.

(Kudos to Debbie Rush. She's done a great job as Anna, I think.)

Debbie Rush quits Coronation Street

Actor Debbie Rush is leaving Coronation Street. Debbie has been playing Anna Windass for 9 years. It's time for a new challenge for Debbie who has enjoyed her time on Corrie immensely.

Debbie will be filming up to later in the year and will be on screen into early 2018, giving ITV lots of time to sort out a leaving storyline.

Debbie said: “I’ve had an amazing nine years and the decision to leave was not made lightly. I love playing Anna and will miss working with the fantastic cast and crew. I don’t know what the future holds but I am excited to explore what other acting opportunities are out there. I am very grateful for all the brilliant storylines I have been given during my time on Coronation Street and am very much looking forward to what is in store for Anna in the run up to my departure next year.”

Judging from previous reaction on this blog, there will likely be a very mixed reaction from fans. Anna is a character that is sometimes difficult to like. She has certainly had her challenges over the past 9 years including being coerced into having sex with Pat Phelan to get Gary off the hook for an assault charge, adopting a daughter who got pregnant at 12, and most recently suffering very bad burns when David Platt crashed his fuel-filled car on the cobbles.

What's next for Anna? Producer Kate Oates says "Debbie’s decision to pursue other roles will allow us to play an exciting exit story for Anna, which will see her fighting for her family and tackling old enemies head-on.”

Sounds like a possible final confrontation with Pat Phelan to me!

See who else is leaving, joining and returning to Coronation Street
