Three men and three babies

Babies born on the cobbles often enter the world by means of various complications. The current 3 babies - Zack, Oliver and Susie were being looked after by their dads in Friday’s episodes but, simple statement though that seems, it’s nowhere near as simple as that.

Susie, Eva and Aidan’s biological baby, is now Toyah and Peter’s baby. Toyah knows Susie is Eva’s baby, but Peter doesn’t. Peter believes that Susie is the result of the surrogate Jackie’s pregnancy, but there’s something else he doesn’t know and that is that Jackie miscarried, but Toyah never told him. So, Peter is under the impression that Susie is straightforwardly his and Toyah’s baby and a half-sister to Simon. Oh dear – this is soap and it will all come out…

Baby Oliver is the biological child of Leanne and Steve. At the time of his conception, Steve was married to Michelle, who, just a short while before Oliver’s birth, had lost her baby. Michelle was absolutely devastated by the loss, understandably, only to discover that in fact her husband Steve was also the father of Leanne’s baby.

And so to Zack – who is the result of a one-night stand for Nicola and Gary, and is also Phelan’s grandson. How Nicola and Gary will deal with that particular difficulty, remains to be seen. Anna Windass is the grandmother of baby Zack so Anna and Phelan, those two great enemies, are inextricably linked, by blood, to each other. Eileen is the honorary grandmother of baby Zack and seems deeply attached to him.

The three fathers were gathered together last week with their respective babies. Sounds simple enough but Gary was with Zack, despite the fact that Nicola has banned Gary from seeing Zack. Gary is not perfect and does get into some difficult situations, but to me, Nicola is being unreasonable, selfish and thoughtless, not to allow Gary to see his son.

Liz jokes that Steve is now ‘Daddy Day Care’ as she bumps in to Eileen and Nicola on their way to pick up Zack. As Liz opens the door for them, we see Gary holding baby Zack and Steve and Peter watching the racing on TV. In my book, that’s no big deal. The babies are clearly fine and yes, maybe the men are a little loud with excitement, but the children are in no danger at all. I felt annoyed and irritated by the 3 women standing in judgement. So the men told a little lie, but was it really all that bad? Nicola went straight over to Gary and wrested Zack from his arms where the baby was sleeping safely and peacefully. Steve defends Gary and says, ‘He has a right to see him – he is his father.’ Well said, Steve. And surely, the more people a baby can have in its life, who love it, the better. This doesn’t wash with Nicola and she refuses to even talk.

A short while later, Gary goes to see Nicola, who tells him that he has only gained entry to Eileen’s house because she doesn’t want to air her dirty laundry in public. Nicola tells Gary that wherever he is ‘stuff happens and I don’t want my son…’ Gary cuts in with ‘Our son! He’s our son and that stuff was mainly down to your dad!’ He adds, ‘This beautiful kid, my flesh and blood, who I can’t have a relationship with him – how can that be right? Whatever you think of me, I am a good person, a good dad. All I want is to have some sort of contact with him, so he knows who I am. Is that so bad?’ To which, Nicola replies that he’s right. Gary’s face lights up with joy.

I’m pleased about this development– it is too easy a weapon for women to use when they refuse access to the fathers. Obviously, if there is some doubt, some danger, then perhaps social services should be contacted.  But we know that Gary is besotted with his son Jake and also little Zack and as far as is humanly possible, Zack will come to no harm in his care.

Lies and Betrayals - the last days of Rome come to the cobbles

Right - let's get some order here. Who has lied, who has cheated to whom and with whom? Who has been betrayed and who are the betrayers? Quite a task!

So, Eva accused Leanne of being a hypocrite. Looked at objectively, she is. Leanne lied to Eva as to the paternity of baby Oliver. Eva called Leanne out on this lie because Leanne made such a huge deal, rightly or wrongly, of Eva having known that Toyah and Peter were in a relationship, and for not passing that knowledge on to Leanne. Eva could be forgiven for not informing Leanne as she genuinely didn't want to cause unnecessary stress to Leanne during her pregnancy. Leanne saw it differently - in her mind, it was a lie of omission and a betrayal. Did Leanne suspect that Eva was trying to protect Toyah and Peter? Well, we know that's not so, but when a person feels betrayed, they are not always thinking straight.

It has never quite rung true for me that Leanne would potentially lose her mind on discovery of Toyah and Peter being together, but the storyline dictated that that would be the case, and so it was played out.

The lie told to everyone by Leanne and Nick about baby Oliver's paternity, was revealed to be just that, when Steve, holding the baby and overcome with emotion, revealed gently but persistently, that Oliver was his son, not Nick's. In front of Gail and all the family, gathered to celebrate Oliver's arrival, the truth dawned on everyone, Michelle included.

While Gail denounced the idea of Nick bringing up another man's child, she failed to remember just how fond she is of Max, who is not David's biological son, though he loves him all the same. She then claimed to have known all along that Leanne Battersby was no good.

And what of Liz and her role here? Initially she tried to get Leanne on side in the hope that she might be able to play a part in the baby's life. But, Leanne was having none of it - adamant that Liz would play no part in the baby's life. Later, there was a softening in Leanne's attitude towards Liz, Leanne understanding how heart breaking it was for Liz to lose her grandchild. An offer was made and accepted -  the Moses basket was gratefully received by Leanne as a gift from Liz. At least until Nick arrived home and was inexcusably rude to Liz.

Liz was in a very difficult position - beset by all manner of moral difficulties and a wholly unenviable division of loyalties. Whatever she did would have consequences - really serious and life changing consequences. Should Liz have told Michelle that her husband had made Leanne pregnant as well as Michelle, around about the same time? Steve didn't want her to do that, but should she have betrayed her son nevertheless? Was the argument that Steve and Michelle were on a break worth mentioning?

And so to Michelle who has lost everything. She clearly sees her mother in law as a betrayer, telling her in no uncertain terms that she doesn't want to hear from her. She knows that Liz knew. What has happened to Michelle is unbearable. To have lost her baby is bad enough, but coupled with her husband's betrayal, it is no wonder that she locked husband and mother in law out as she entertained the punters to free drinks in The Rovers and celebrated Rita's birthday. And smashed some bottles.

William Congreve, a British playwright, who wrote The Mourning Bride in 1697, said this - ' Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.' And so it is the case still.

The Wombs of Weatherfield

One of the central cobbles themes of late is all about babies, pregnancy and IVF. To start with Leanne - we saw her give birth in a lift with out of favour sister, Toyah, as midwife. The ambulance arrived, Toyah, Leanne and baby Oliver, were freed from the lift and, holding her baby tight, Leanne was wheeled into the ambulance. Nick hopped in to accompany Leanne and 'their' son to hospital. There was a meaningful glance between Nick and Steve, the biological father, then off drove the ambulance.

Oh the irony! On the very day that Steve and Michelle scattered their baby's ashes, Steve's 'other baby' was born. How difficult this will be for Steve and indeed for Liz, as Leanne's much-wanted baby, is to be brought up by Leanne and Nick, barely a stone's throw from The Rovers. Will Liz approach Leanne and hope for some contact? And what about Michelle? Will she be suspicious as to why Liz is so interested in Leanne and Nick's baby? And Gail - will she learn that the baby she thought was Nick's isn't Nick's? She may have already become attached ...so how might she react?

A further irony is that Toyah missed her IVF appointment as she was busy delivering Leanne's baby. Time will tell if Toyah and Peter have a baby together and, in his more mature years, whether or not Peter will step up to the plate and be a full time dad. But, doesn't Chloe, the girl in the taxi, loom over that possibility.

And might Michelle and Steve try for another baby? After seeing Michelle holding Oliver, might it not be the case that she will be keen to try again? Until she finds out that her husband is in fact Oliver's biological father. Then what? And can Leanne live a lie?

A while ago, we discovered that Mary had had a baby at the tender age of 14, which was forcibly taken from her. She found him, was offered a new life at the other side of the world, but changed her mind at the last minute and stayed in Weatherfield.

What of future births on the cobbles? Sarah and Gary could have a child - the second for Gary and the third for Sarah. And Rosie? With Adam or someone else?  Sinead and Daniel? And what about Maria when she is released?  Will she and Aidan be a couple or will he stick with Eva, who, I would guess, would love a child with him. And there's always Tracy and Luke. Maybe there will be a romance between Chesney and Gemma. Might Tyrone and Fiz have another child? But where, may I ask, is Dylan, Sean and Violet's child?

Despite all this womb chat, I am with Jennifer Aniston, whose womb has probably endured more scrutiny than any other. She wrote an article on that very topic and I couldn't agree more with her. Her take was that women should not be defined by their reproductive capabilities - not now, not then and not in the future.
