New pics: Carl Webster plays away with James Bailey

It looks as though Corrie’s Abi Webster is heading for heartbreak following shock scenes in tonight’s episode. (Fri August 29th)

As viewers have seen on the 7am ITVX drop of today’s Coronation Street, Abi was hardly out of the country before Carl’s head was turned by another resident.

Whilst many might have been wondering if Tracy would get her claws into Carl in Abi’s absence, it was actually James Bailey (Jason Calendar) who ended up under the covers with the two timing mechanic.

With Abi away on holiday with Kevin and Jack it seems Carl had no qualms about playing away with former footballer James and the pair agreed to see each other again.

Tracy Barlow is already blackmailing Carl over his relationship with Abi so is he risking losing everything with this latest fling?

Jonathan Howard said: “Carl likes living life on the edge, he is a hedonist and a free spirit, he is attracted to a person regardless of their gender and if he sees something he wants he goes for it with no real thought to the consequences of his actions.

“He is frustrated that Abi has gone away with Kevin and he needs something to distract himself. There is a spark between him and James so he goes for it. Tracy was also offering herself to him but he isn’t stupid and he knows that would be a dangerous move, James on the other hand is less complicated and more fun.”

Watch this dramatic turn of events on ITVX now or on ITV tonight at 8pm.

So absolutely no hint of Carl being bisexual before this. Just like Carla with Lisa.

Crikey. Yet another seemingly straight person suddenly turning gay, for no reason whatsoever. So far we've had Tracey, ( she had a fling with lawyer Paula) Nina, Asha, Carla and now Carl!
It's a tad OTT, in my opinion. Carl's love life is complicated enough without adding this to the mix.

Oh pur-lease. I am sure the actor is a nice chap, but Carl is now bisexual?! He doesn't even have a pleasant personality yet he's supposedly irresistible.

It would have been funny if he was in bed with that drag queen from the 'drag night' episode! He deserves to be brought back - so funny!

Has nobody on the street heard the expression: 'Don't do it on your own doorstep'? The writers are getting desperate! Does anyone even care about Carl, Abi or James? Unless this is leading to an issue-based storyline on the global increase in syphilis.

When James said 'this is unexpected ' I said yes, and it's unexpected for the viewers as well!
I agree with you humpty Dumpty - the writers (and the Corrie team) are getting desperate.
Why have a lot of the cast left or have been booted out? Something is clearly going on behind the scenes.
They should be doing all they can to hang on to characters such as Jenny, Abbi, Aadi, Yasmeen, Debbie, Billy, Peter and Daisy.
Less hospital and police station scenes would be good, too.
The mass exodus all started when Beth tinker went.
If we go back to that time and include returns and exits, such as Jason and Julie, it's almost 20 cast members who have chosen to leave or have been booted out.

Sophie and Todd were established straight characters but at least they were teenagers. Carla is late 40s with four marriages behind her!

No wonder Sally Carman (Abi) has chosen to leave the Street. This whole story line is so unlikely that it's nauseating.

Corrie seems to have officially entered its "jumping the shark" phase. The writers and show runners seem to have been told to throw anything at the wall and see if it sticks. As a LOOOONNGG time viewer from afar (Australia), I am starting to feel insulted and cheated. I know the writers are better than this. Corrie has been the foundation of so many good careers, both in front of the camera and behind, this is just sad. I feel the actors and writers must be feeling a bit, I don't know, "ho hum" about some of this. Not all of it. There are still great little kernels of goodness in there. Like many contributors on here, we write because we care. Continuing Drama is an art form, but it is so often looked down upon. Yet later on many of the very same directors, writers and actors from this arena are nominated for, and win, prestigious awards for their later work. Corrie is a great training ground and springboard.

Carl and James turned what would have a been a routine and dull episode into something worth watching.
