I was 19 Episodes Behind On Corrie! : What Have I Missed?

A new year is always a welcome new start, and as I write this, I'm starting the new year and still catching up on Corrie. At one point last November, I was 19 episodes behind. I haven't written for this blog for months, so I am writing to update you on where I am in the Corrie fandom and my thoughts on the latest storylines.

In October 2024, I was in the middle of some work exams alongside an unexpected work award nomination. Being autistic, I can seldom concentrate on anything, never mind more than one thing at once, so Corrie took a backseat whilst revision came to the fore. Rather like a studious Sam Blakeman or Roy Cropper (more likely, a character with abundant autism traits), I became bookish, gave up on X, and took a black cab out of Weatherfield for a bit. Once exams were over (distinction!!!) I won the award!!! (ceremony in Bristol - a beautiful city), I got back onto ITV X to realise I was weeks, and one point, over a month behind, on my favourite TV show with some serious catching up to do. With nearly three hours of Corrie a week, it left me with a ginormous task. Like I said, I'm autistic, and Corrie is my 'special interest', so I had to catch up. But, as November began and I got into a few episodes, I noticed a definite shift in storylines, character arcs, and a clear criminal motif.

What Am I Watching - What's Going On? ''Crimenation Street'' could be the new name for the show, and alongside a good drop of Hollyoaks, the youngster issues-based storylines tinged with oodles of Kit crime capers (it's a tall order, the long arm of the law - the jokes write themselves) have gone into orbit. Admittedly, I am a fan of police procedurals, and ITV do some brilliant true crime dramas, but it's not what I watch Corrie for!

So, Where Do We Begin? Joel's strung-out murder, the whodunnit, Bethany's botched lipo, Daisy's joyride, David's money laundering, Betsy's factory heist, Mason's dodgy brother's - and that's just from the top of my head. Tracy's part-time return is more criminal than that, as is Toyah stealing Nick from Leanne and Les Battersby's death. Why weren't more legacy characters at the 'wake'? A guest appearance from Curly Watts would have gone down a treat. Don't even get me started on (spoiler alert) Debbie Webster's upcoming Dementia battle. I'm old enough to remember Mike Baldwin's Alzheimer's, and it's a grim subject. During Paul's MND demise, I used the fast-forward button, which was a first for me. I haven't forgotten Gail's departure either; however, going off previous years of her non-storylines, that was a foregone conclusion (same said for Eileen). With online gossip about cost cuts, diminishing viewing figures, and Corrie fans' dismay at the recent output, is this new producer about to enact a Brian Park-style cast cull in Weatherfield?

What's Next For Me? I still love Corrie, and regardless of the crime shenanigans, blackmail, car theft, criminal damage, child illnesses, stabbings and murder, the writing and acting remain top-drawer. Like Roy Cropper's love of trains, Bats, or classical music, my Corrie fandom is unwavering and will never leave Weatherfield for good. That said, with the new producer promising 'shock exits', I'm just hoping Roy Cropper won't be one of them—now THAT would be criminal!!

I'm now eight episodes behind and not far off Christmas Day 2024. Is three hours of drama a week the actual issue?

New Year is always a welcome new start, and with a new producer at the helm, I'm hoping some positive changes are afoot, ones that take "Crimenation Street" back to the Coronation Street we all know and love. What worries me is that Debbie's death ( the epitome of a classic legacy character) is a harbinger of what's to come. I hope not.

Conversation Street Podcast Episode #661

On our first episode of the 2025, we chat about what went down in Weatherfield between the 30th December and the 3rd January (Episodes #11,454 - 11,460).

Swarla fans may not have got their Christmas Day pizza fest, but there was plenty of the pair on our screens this week to enjoy, including an impromptu declaration of love from Carla as the bells tolled midnight on New Year's Eve - but are her feelings reciprocated? Speaking of the Swains, Betsy's getting all loved up with Mason this week, but when he finds evidence that could get his brothers sent down for murder, he suddenly finds himself with a massive target on his back... Also this week, Evelyn gets fast tracked to uni, David declares war on Kit, and Tracy's determined to bring Cassie down.

Another slow news week this week, so after Street Talk, we just round things off with a bit of feedback before finishing.

Coronation Street’s Mason Radcliffe involved in stabbing horror

On Monday night, Coronation Street’s Mason Radcliffe is left fighting for his life after being viciously attacked by his brothers with a zombie knife.

The dramatic scenes will see Mason (Luca Toolan) in a critical condition after being stabbed by his brothers, Matty (Harry Lowbridge) and Logan (Seamus McGoff).

The storyline comes as England and Wales has seen an 80% increase in knife crime in the last 10 years. According to a *study compiled up to June 2024, there have been 50,973 police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument.

The same study highlights that there have been 225 murders involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales in the 12 months to June 2024, 78 of the victims were aged under 25, and 10 of the victims were aged under 16.

Kate Brooks, Producer of Coronation Street, said:

“It's vitally important to shine a light on this topic, and really show the impact knife crime has on not only the victim and their loved ones, but also the wider community.

“With the alarming statistics, we want to do anything we can as a show to combat this violent endemic. After watching this harrowing, but important story unfold, if one person thinks twice about bringing a knife to a fight, then we've achieved our aim to raise awareness.”

The storyline escalated when Lisa (Vicky Myers) showed Mason photographs taken at the crime scene of Becky’s death and revealed that his brothers were behind the murder.

Determined to take his brothers down, Mason searched their flat and found a WWII helmet, matched to the one listed in Becky’s case file, and handed it in to the police station. After being questioned by Kit (Jacob Roberts) the brothers come looking for Mason intent on brutal revenge.

When the altercation breaks out in the children’s play area, Dylan (Liam McCheyne) manages to make his escape. Abi (Sally Carmen) is first at the scene to find Mason bleeding and does her best to stop the flow of blood before the ambulance shows up.

As news of the stabbing spreads around the street, the whole community is left shocked and horrified, with the tragedy affecting each resident.

Coronation Street have been working closely with The Ben Kinsella Trust to ensure the storyline will be told as accurately and sensitively as possible.

Patrick Green, CEO of The Ben Kinsella Trust, said:

“This impactful Coronation Street storyline vividly highlights the devastating consequences of knife crime. We applaud the show for their commitment to working closely with us to accurately depict this reality.

“This storyline aims to raise public awareness of the dangers of knife crime. Furthermore, we hope it will encourage viewers to seek help and support before situations escalate, ultimately contributing to the prevention of knife violence.”

On his upcoming storyline, Luca Toolan said:

“I truly am honoured to be a part of this storyline. I’ve always enjoyed Coronation Street as a viewer, but I completely underestimated the power that it has on its audience until I was involved in the bullying storyline.

“Fingers crossed this storyline will be received the way we are hoping it will be and ultimately, if one person drops a knife and someone is saved, that would definitely make it all worth it.”

Coronation Street is on ITV1 at 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on ITVX and STV.

Preview of today's Coronation Street - Friday 3 January 2025

Friday 3 January 2025

After spending the afternoon in bed with Mason Betsy is angry to read text messages on his phone from Stu offering him a job in Germany as a trainee chef. As she orders him to leave Lisa arrives home and demands to know what is going on. Lisa catches up with Mason and shows him some photos taken at the crime scene of Becky’s death and reveals that his brothers were driving the car that mowed Becky down.  Mason is genuinely shocked and asks Dylan to keep a lookout for him while he searches Matty and Logan’s flat. He and Dylan arrive at the station and hand Lisa a WWII helmet that he found at the flat. Could it be the smoking gun Lisa needs?

The doctor breaks the news to a shocked Carla that the sepsis has damaged her kidney and she may need another transplant.  Ryan returns from Ireland and realising that Carla lied about her whereabouts Lisa visits Carla and spells out that she doesn’t appreciate being lied to. Carla makes out that she didn’t want any fuss and she’s on the mend. Clearly hurt, Lisa leaves her to it.

Hope and Joseph film prank videos of Tyrone after swapping the sugar on his cereal for salt and upload them to their social media accounts. Meanwhile, Evelyn is thrown into panic when she receives a text inviting her for an interview at the university. At the university, Evelyn heads in for her interview and is dismayed to come face to face with Marjorie Tavistock, the woman she impersonated at the Chariot Square law lecture. Is Evelyn’s dream over?

Tracy confronts Cassie over an advance she has had in her wages from Ken. How will she react?  Tracy tells Steve and Amy that while she’s in Spain, it’s their job to keep an eye on Cassie for her. Steve and Amy reckon she’s worrying about nothing.

ELSEWHERE Daisy calls at the builder’s yard flat with a bin bag full of Bertie’s toys and explains to Daniel that it’s best if she cuts ties with Bertie.
