Oh Christmas Three! Corrie Producer Kate Brooks Talks Daisy, Bethany and Daniel

"It's so fun to watch. It just feels nice and 'soapy.'"

I recently travelled to Coronation Street studios in Manchester for a press conference with new producer Kate Brooks. It was packed with so much news, views and spoilers, that I'm sharing her
insights via a series of blogs.

Here, she talks about what Christmas 2024 will be like for Daisy, Bethany and Daniel.

Those who don't wish to be in the know should look away now.

Describing their relationship as “the love triangle that keeps on giving,” Kate says it will be carried through December and into the New Year.

We will essentially find Daniel in love with two women and torn as to what to do for the best, and we could even see a little mistake come back to bite him.

Kate tells us, “For me, the rivalry between Daisy and Bethany is fantastic. It's so fun to watch. It just feels nice and 'soapy,' which I think is what we want to do with that story.”

Acknowledging there are other issue-led stories around it, she says the love triangle and dynamic is going to be “super interesting, and super exciting as we wonder what the heck Daniel is going to do.” With constant dilemmas to negotiate on his part, we're promised lots of relationship drama from it.

“You know what I love about it as well?” she adds, “There's no good or bad guys in it. It's just that these three people have found themselves in this situation, and they just want to find their own happiness. But, obviously sometimes when you find the happiness, it comes at a cost.”

This last remark I found to be very heartening when listening to Kate, as it gave an indication of her focus on and interest in personal relationships and stories, which has always been at the heart of the Street. This was evidenced too in other conversations with her which you can read all about here:

Leanne, Toyah and Nick Share Ex-mas? Interview with Corrie Producer Kate Brooks

“It's fantastic for the viewer.”

I recently travelled to Coronation Street studios in Manchester for a press conference with new producer Kate Brooks. It was packed with so much news, views and spoilers, that I'm sharing her insights via a series of blogs.

Here, she talks about what Christmas 2024 will be like for Leanne, Toyah and Nick.

Those who don't wish to be in the know should look away now.

Leanne's dreadful experience with The Institute, and her relationship with Nick, may both be over, but it seems the drama isn't, as he and her sister Toyah continue to hide that they're seeing eachother.

"You've got Leanne who's got her suspicions about Nick and Toyah, and I felt it was really important to see a different side to Leanne," says Kate.

"She's had a really tough year; she had The Institute, which was all-consuming in many ways. But, she's a Battersby, and she's scrappy and she's feisty - and Toyah is so good, and so brilliant and wonderful. And Leanne sees the life that she had just being taken away from her, and rather than go down the route which is expected, and for her to take it on the chin, or to move on, she really wants to make them pay, and she really is intent on getting her own revenge."

"It can be at the detriment of her own sanity sometimes, but she wants to make them realise what they've done to her. Nick's betrayal is one thing, but the betrayal of a sister is huge."

"And I just love that dynamic between Toyah and Leanne. I think it's fantastic. I remember really vividly them coming on to the Street peak Spice Girls era; they barrelled on to the Street. And just tapping into how they were, and how they were as Battersbys, was really important, and that all comes to the forefront on Christmas Day, and it doesn't end well for anyone.”

Kate's insights here, on other characters central to the festive season, and about Christmas generally, indicates a focus on and interest in personal relationships and stories, as well as a good awareness of the past and who these characters are at their core.

This is refreshing given that grounded stories and strong characterisation have always been central to the Street at its best, and is hopefully a sign of things to come.

Christmas Eves: Carla and Lisa get Festive? Interview with Corrie Producer Kate Brooks

I recently travelled to Coronation Street studios in Manchester for a press conference with new producer Kate Brooks. It was packed with so much news, views and spoilers, that I'm sharing her insights via a series of blogs.

Here, she talks about what Christmas 2024 will be like for Carla Connor and Lisa Swain.

Those who don't wish to be in the know should look away now.

Fans of this pairing, of which there are many, will be happy to know that there will be developments in their relationship as they go into Christmas.

Kate spoke of how the the attraction is clear and chemistry palpable between these “very strong, independent, stubborn, brilliant women” who have been circling one another for a while and “find themselves drawn to eachother” with a “connection that they can't deny.”

Kate explained how, for Carla, “this is quite huge,” and while falling in love with a woman “completely blows her mind” after a long and colourful history with men, she feels “it's important for us to show that she's not struggling with her sexuality, she's very confident in her sexuality, but she's fallen in love with a person that she didn't expect to fall in love with, and that presents many challenges.”

While Carla may not quite understand what's happening, we're told she goes with it, whereas it's Lisa who struggles to let down barriers caused by grieving her late wife and her committment to her job, and to allow Carla see her vulnerability.

“Carla's in a bit of a tailspin,” says Kate. “She's like, I've fallen in love with this woman, but she's hard work. She makes Peter look easy! I think that's what the story is really for them two.”

We finally saw them get together on Friday's Corrie, but unfortunately the honeymoon period didn't exactly last too long, with concerns for Lisa's daughter Betsy among the sources of friction. Her presence naturally also brings Carla into a different world, and Kate says, “it's really interesting watching her navigate this because we know Carla, we love Carla, and this is completely alien, and unknown and unchartered waters, but yet she navigates them really well.”

Kate went on to explain, “We want to keep them secure, we want to keep them grounded, we want to make that relationship really believable, and it is. What I'm seeing on screen is fantastic between the two of them. And I think it's really important to tell these stories, and tell these stories properly. At the heart of it is a relationship; it's a love story."

"They will inevitably get a lot of curveballs thrown their way. 2025 is not a quiet year for them two. There's a lot of hurdles that come their way, a lot of obstacles, and things they didn't quite anticipate that get in the way of their relationship, but ultimately they emerge from this strong and united."

"I'm really excited to be with this couple on this journey, and I think the drama and the story they've given us already is immense, so there's going to be a lot more of that.”

We're told their relationship becomes public knowlege during the festive season. “They are happy during the Christmas period" Kate explains. "Carla initially flinches a little bit at the idea of people gossiping. And it's not about sexuality, but she's a bit unsure. But once it's out there, and she realises that everybody's absolutely fine with it, then it's all systems go.

"Christmas will be when they really commit to eachother, when they declare how they feel about eachother, and when they stop circling eachother and touching eachother's hair.”

Kate's insights here, on other characters central to the festive season, and about Christmas generally, indicates a focus on and interest in personal relationships and stories. This is refreshing given that it has always been at the heart of the Street's best storylines, and hopefully bodes well for the future of the show.

A Classic Christmas for Gail? Interview with Corrie Producer Kate Brooks

I love our Christmas Day. I just thoroughly enjoyed everything about it.”

It's always a big moment when a new Corrie producer takes the reigns, and quite natural for fans to receive the news with both excitement and trepidation, as we anticipate how the show will be shaped under their authority.

Kate Brooks was appointed to the role in April 2024, and we're told her first episodes are set to appear on our screens in mid-December; just in time for Christmas.

I travelled to Coronation Street studios in Manchester for her first press conference, which was packed with news, views and spoilers.

Those who don't wish to be in the know should look away now.

I'm delighted to be able to bring you a flavour, from Kate, of what the festive season will hold via a series of blogs. As the biggest news is that the Christmas Day episode will be Gail Rodwell's last, with actress Helen Worth bidding farewell to the show, this first in the series will focus on that storyline.

It's quite simply impossible to imagine Corrie without Gail after 50 brilliant years, and she leaves a proud legacy of both iconic performances, and the kind of reassuring presence, whether on-screen or not, which is the hallmark of any great soap character. She might also leave a final sprinkle of confetti in her wake - or not - as we're told her farewell may - or may not - involve a wedding to husband number five.

Here's what Kate had to say about this, and what we can expect overall from Coronation Street this Christmas.

“It is, in a word, very fun. It's a really lively Christmas on the Street. It's really festive.”

“Lots of bombshells are dropped. Obviously this is set against Gail's wedding - whether she goes through with that or not, I cannot tell - but it is a story about the Platts at the heart of it. Basically, it's a story about family and how secrets can impact and implode on a family, so there is a lot of betrayals, lots of secrets are exposed during this episode, and it will feel very kind of Classic Corrie with a bit of a twist.”

“Obviously, I think we're all in need of a bit of escapism at the minute, and we've had quite a dark, and brilliant, few months on the cobbles. Christmas, and the Christmas period for us, is all about trying to tap into the family dynamics of the Platts - what makes people tick - and ultimately trying to make sure that we give the glorious Gail the exit that she deserves."

"She's been such an icon on the street for such a long time - 50 years of television, which is amazing - and we can't tell a story about her exit, and we can't tell the story on Christmas Day about her exit, without it feeling and being steeped in nostalgia, and there's tons of nostalgia in this episode."

"Hopefully people will be crying, they'll be laughing, there'll be gasps as people kind of watch and go, 'Oh my goodness! That's just happened!' [It's] old school Corrie, but just with a real modern twist, and I think people will really, really enjoy it.”

“I want people to sit down Christmas night with a full tummy, watch this episode Christmas Day and go, 'You know, that's exactly what I needed.' So that's what Corrie is this Christmas.”

I don't know about you reading this, but when I heard fun, lively, festive, family, Classic / Old School Corrie, escapism, nostalgia and laughter, I was already thinking, that's exactly what I need from Coronation Street, before even seeing the episode. It sounds like essential viewing this Christmas, not least on foot Gail's farewell, which is the end of an era in the truest sense.

Expanding on what we can expect from her departure storyline, Kate says, “In the run up to Christmas she's found out that some of her nearest and dearest have absolutely betrayed her. She doesn't know who to believe. Even her dear old Mum has lied to her and she really struggles with that and she's a bit, like, 'I don't know whether I want this. I don't know whether I want to be with Jesse.' She contemplates and questions everything and every decision she's ever made; and obviously Gail's had a really colourful past, so that will be part of that Christmas Day episode.”

“She's going to leave the Street, and it's going to be so wonderful and sad, 'cos I'm devastated that Gail's leaving. It really devastates me, 'cos she's so iconic. And I think that label gets bandied about quite readily, but it's Gail! 50 years she's been on the Street. We've watched her grow, and it was really important to make sure that her exit and departure felt really fitting and in keeping with who she is as a character.”

Kate came across as very down to earth, passionate and knowledgable about the show. She did work on Corrie previously between 2011 and 2016, first as a storyliner and then story editor, before moving to a producer role with Emmerdale, so that may make her familiarity with it not wholly surprising. But she had on a Newton & Ridley jumper when we met – an homage to Weatherfield's finest brewery – which gave the impression we weren't just speaking with someone assigned to the position, but a fan of the show, and up for a bit of fun to boot; here's hoping her lovely good humour makes its way into the scripts!

It was great, and admittedly refreshing, to hear what lies in store for our Christmas with Corrie this year, and when Kate went on to talk about what the future held for clusters of characters, I felt the dear hope that strong characterisation, and character-led drama, might be a hallmark of her tenure.

Time, of course, will tell, but speaking in such terms felt like a good sign.

Now that we have an overall sense of the feel of the festive season on the cobbles, and what a farewell may look like for Gail, you can read all about what Kate had to say about those other characters which will feature most at Christmas and in the build up:
