Video: Coronation Street - They're Back!

With thanks to Coronation Street fan Barrie Turnbull for alerting us to a couple of little gems. Barrie  has found a couple of lovely little Coronation Street specials via the wonders of YouTube, as follows.

The first one is called: Coronation Street - They're Back! It's a Coronation Street: Granada Plus Special from 1996.

In October 1996, satellite channel Granada Plus began broadcasting classic episodes sequentially every weekday starting from the golden era of April 1976 (ep 1588).  This 1996 promotional programme is introduced by Thelma Barlow. There are some lovely interviews and anecdotes with several cast members, writers & producers who worked on Coronation Street between 1976-1996. There are also some classic clips from upcoming 1976 episodes. The original plan was to re-broadcast the series from 1960, but this was scrapped in favour of Bill Podmores golden era. As 1976 was only 20 years ago it was thought that 1976 cast members would be more familiar to 1996 viewers. Original broadcasts were screened four times a day on Granada plus, being the unique selling point of the channel. In addition to a Sunday omnibus, and special block episodes of particular storylines on Saturday primetime. Indeed the first Christmas Day of 1996 saw a classic corrie marathon broadcast from 10am-6pm, showing the first 16 episodes from 1960.

You can watch it here.

The faces of Corrie in 1996

If you remember, last year I had a series of posts looking at the top 12 faces of each Corrie decade - the 1960sthe 1970sthe 1980sthe 1990s and the 2000s. For the next few weeks or so, I’ll be looking at the top 12 faces of each year between 1960 and 2013.

With thanks to Corriepedia for the information.

In 1996, 163 episodes were broadcast.

1. Vera Duckworth (114 episodes)
2. Liz McDonald (105 episodes)
3. Andy McDonald (102 episodes)
4. Jack Duckworth (100 episodes)
5. Ken Barlow (97 episodes)
6. Deirdre Rachid (94 episodes)
7. Rita Sullivan (92 episodes)
8. Bill Webster (92 episodes)
9. Don Brennan (90 episodes)
10. Jim McDonald (87 episodes)
11. Mavis Wilton (86 episodes)
12. Mike Baldwin (85 episodes)

Due to lack of space, Alma Baldwin, Fiona Middleton and Audrey Roberts fail to make the top 12, but they also appear in 85 episodes

Average age: 51

Note: This is the last time Mavis (to date), Jack and Don appear in the top 12 and the only time, to date, Andy and Bill appear
