Carla and Peter : A Classic Corrie Christmas Two-Hander?

It's November 5th as I write this, and with a deluge of rain and flooding in South Yorkshire having quelled the expected fireworks, I'm devoid of excitement. Therefore, I thought I'd start writing up the latest Corrie Christmas / New Year teasers to post on the Corrie blog. Rather than saving the best until last, my first article starts with the best at the front - that being a two-hander that celebrates/commiserates the end of Peter and Carla's incredible tenure, which is due to air during Christmas week. Coronation Street is giving the relationship finale the best treatment, with a seasonal special two-hander, exploring the ins and outs of this dramatic duo. You cannot beat a Corrie two-hander, and as 2023 draws to a close, this could be the pinnacle of a brilliant year on the cobbles.

On October 25th, I joined an ITV press event to chat with Corrie producer Iain Macleod, to give you a little sneaky peak of what's to come.

Hi Iain, following Stephen Reid's death, we know Peter is due to leave the street. Can you give us the lowdown on what's to come for Carla and Peter?

What we wanted to do with Peter, was to deal with the reality of a man who has demons, it's fair to say, with a history of alcoholism and depressive episodes. His reaction to what he did to Stephen and the kind of battle to get it straight within himself. (He wonders) whether it was the right thing to do, was it necessary and how much of it was to do with getting revenge for Carla!

Will Peter succumb to alcoholism again?

We were very clear when we started the chapter of this story that we wouldn't want him to fall off the wagon again, so you won't see that. We thought it was important that as a transplant recipient, he wouldn’t drink again - that was an important message to send out. However, he will struggle psychologically with his demons and his happiness on Coronation Street. Carla becomes aware of his feelings - he’s not okay. It's a fork in the road for them, with their happiness appearing to be not reliant on each other.

Does this lead to a Carla and Peter showdown?

It leads to a surprising Christmas day episode* - a HUGE two-hander between the two of them (they are pretty much the only cast on the episode) that picks over every single detail of who they are, what they've been as a couple, what they want for their futures, and what happiness looks like for them. As we know, this is leading to Peter’s exit, which will be bittersweet and is Corrie at its best.

Has this been filmed yet?

It's filming right now (late October), and I cannot wait for you to see the results. If it's as good as the scripts, and experience tell(s) me it's always better, it will lead to a stunning Christmas episode for us. It's the culmination of a decade-long* love story, I think the viewers are going to love it!

Thanks, Iain!

* The Christmas Day episode is not the two-hander, that's a full-cast ensemble. The two-hander will follow on Boxing Day.

Corrie has teased this image:

Is this a double for the ‘Weatherfield North’ tram stop?  It makes a change from someone leaving in the back of a black cab, doesn't it?

*It's actually been 12 years since Carla and Peter’s affair began!

Do we have any current/new relationships on the street that could last that long?

Conversation Street Podcast Episode #600

On the 600th edition of the podcast, we chat about what went on in Weatherfield between the 30th October and the 3rd November (Episodes #11097 - 11102).

Did anyone else absolutely love Monday's episode? The Halloween party at the Bistro, Peter and Audrey's reconciliation chat, Tim and Steve's fishing trip.. a script that ticked all the right boxes for what Corrie should be, as far as we're concerned. The rest of the week was more so-so (we did have to sit through more of the Stu and Eliza story after all), but the focus on Daniel piecing together the clues about Ryan and Daisy's time at the hotel definitely helped keep things interesting for the most part. As well as that, we had Courtney's abrupt dumping of Aadi (though Michael was sure something more sinister was afoot!), a couple of cute scenes between Sam and Hope and even little bit more Toyah - who Simon DEFINITELY seems to suspect is having an affair with Peter... All in all, it gave us plenty to chat about!

Up next on the podcast is The Kabin, where we have a lengthy chat about the news that the British Soap Awards have been cancelled next year - without any proper reason being given! And are they really coming back in 2025? We're not so sure it's a given, to be honest.. Finally, we round off the show with a bit more of your fabulous feedback.

In this special episode streamed live on YouTube, we ranked all of Corrie's kills by just how gruesome and grisly they are - perfect for Halloween night! Over the years, Coronation Street has seen bludgeonings, stabbings, drownings, hole punchings.... and that's not even half of it! We had a great time recording this live, and you can watch the recording of it down below.

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Friday 3 November 2023

Friday 3rd November 2023

DANIEL CAN’T IGNORE THE EVIDENCE Daniel confides in Ken that he suspects something is going on between Ryan and Daisy, but he needs proof. Ken advises him to tread carefully. Daniel corners Ryan and after last night’s debacle demands to know what’s going on. Ryan tells him that he confessed his love to Daisy!

ELIZA’S BLACK EYE SENDS STU RED Stu and Yasmeen are concerned to see Eliza sporting a black eye. Eliza explains that she took a hit in Taekwondo but it’s nothing to worry about. Felicity calls to talk to Eliza. Yasmeen and Eliza are shocked to realise Stu alerted Social Services.

AADI’S GIVEN HOPE Aadi calls in the café in his Freshco uniform and tells Nina that he plans to earn enough money so that he can support Courtney. Nina masks her concern. Back at the precinct flat Courtney waits for Aadi.

ELSEWHERE As Dylan sets off on his paper round, Mason approaches with some girls and makes fun of him. When Leyla sticks up for Dylan and points out that at least he’s earning some money, Dylan throws her a grateful glance. Later overhearing how George’s house will be empty for a couple of days while Glenda’s away, Mason puts pressure on Dylan to steal the keys so they can throw a party. When Peter reveals he’s off to an alcoholics’ meeting, Toyah offers to go with him and Peter’s grateful.

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Wednesday 1 November 203

Wednesday 1st November 2023

DANIEL GETS A TIP OFF Daisy lies to Daniel and tells him she’s spending the night at her Mum’s. But when Jenny questions her about her plans, Daisy crumbles and admits she’s spending the night with Ryan. Daisy explains how she loves both Daniel and Ryan but in different ways and she doesn’t know what to do. Jenny urges her to make up her mind before it’s too late. However when Daniel clocks Ryan getting into Steve’s taxi and asking for the Chariot Square Hotel, is the game up? His suspicions growing after a phone call to Daisy’s mum, Daniel follows Ryan. As Daisy and Ryan head to their room, Daisy comes to a decision and tells Ryan that this isn’t going to work as it’s Daniel she loves. But as Daniel arrives at the hotel, determined to find out the truth, has her decision come too late? AADI’S WORLD COMES CRASHING DOWN When Aadi reveals he’s been offered a job shelf stacking at Freshco and by way of celebration, he’s invited Asha and Nina over for afternoon tea, Courtney feigns enthusiasm. With Courtney a no show and Asha running late, Aadi and Nina tuck in but they’re taken aback by the arrival of Darren who has news from Courtney. ELIZA’S REVELATION IS A HORROR SHOW FOR STU When the PI tells Stu she’s had no luck finding any dirt on Dom he insists she carry on digging, whatever the cost. Visiting Stu for tea, Eliza admits she was given detention for falling asleep in class having stayed up all night watching a horror movie. Stu’s furious.

ELSEWHERE Dylan surveys his packed lunch with disdain. Sean explains that with no money coming in, it’s all he can afford. At Sean’s suggestion Dylan goes for a job at the Kabin delivering newspapers. Asha returns home from her paramedic course and tells Nina all about her day working with Isla and how much she admires her.
