Coronation Street Episode Review Sunday 27 October 2024

Good evening.  As readers may be aware ITV X is making episodes available on the day of transmission - but for some reason this episode appeared on that resource on Friday and it was therefore watched in this house on Friday evening.  First up the antagonism between Sam and Toyah is writ large but Toyah persists and eventually Sam at least lets her stay so that they work on equipment which demonstrates Gail's heart operation.  When Nick returns he gets a demonstration of Gail's op and Sam departs to show it to Hope and later to go to the cinema.  Nick then has a heart to heart with Toyah which ends with lips locking and further close contact.  Nick does not want to upset Sam again or disrupt him and so the new Platt/Battersby pairing agree to keep their romance quiet for now which will inevitably lead to deception, discovery and recrimination in the coming weeks as people catch them in clinches.  Given that Toyah promised to not lie to Sam to start up again with Nick in secret in the same episode must be a record.

We have the big reveal this evening of Bethany's stoma, initially to us and then she unexpectedly exposes it to Daniel as he comes into the flat as he has a key.  She shouts at him and he departs - she had wanted  to choose when she showed him and did not like being caught unawares.  She phones Sarah who returns to the flat instead of visiting Gail - she thinks she might have been followed but is unsure.  Sarah receives a phone call from Damon who has suffered a beating but has convinced Harvey's goons that someone else in the gang has abstracted the cash from the lock up.  Damon says that there should be no further contact between them (and I do not believe that either).  Daniel has decorated Victoria Gardens (where they had their first wedding) in memory of Sinead and Bethany joins him.   Bethany apologises for her anger and Daniel re-assures her all will be well and they kiss.  Bertie is mentioned but never seen.

Much of this evening revolves around the Platt family which is back centre stage after a long time on the sidelines principally because Gail has undergone an operation which went well and she is on the road to recovery.  She will make a full recovery but needs to take life very easy for the next few weeks.  Gail is fixated on oxters (armpits) a much underused word.  Gail also discovers that Hugh Bonneville likes to add marmalade to his spaghetti bolognese!  David apologises for the upset he has caused Gail.  He is however more worried about the money as Jesse has found it and uplifted it but he hands it back to David.  In a strange apparent non-sequitur David returns to the lock up carrying the cash intending to return it but a member of the gang is present so David returns home with the cash.  David and Jesse discuss the cash and against the background that they are currently off Harvey's hook as Sarah passed the information onwards they broker an understanding and David offers to talk the family round if Jesse keeps it zipped.  Jesse wants a share of the cash.

Ken and Cassie are preparing for their trip to Porto, discussing a fado evening (I hope they enjoy it - it is amazing) and go shopping for suitable clothes.  Steve continues to be suspicious of Cassie and makes it clear that she should not accept the jacket which Ken has bought for her.  She returns the jacket and whilst she is out Ken tells Steve that he welcomes Cassie's company and for his sake would Steve please stop sniping so hard.  On her return with Ken apparently sleeping (but keeping an eye on the two of them) Steve offers Cassie a truce and they shake hands on it.  Has a corner been turned?

Kit appears to stalking Dee Dee - in the shop, in Roy's Rolls and eventually in the Rovers.  We also see Joel's father (sadly not his mother) and it transpires that Dee Dee attended Joel's funeral yesterday.  Mr Deering wants to know if Dee Dee has any more knowledge about Joel's demise - which she denies. Later she tells Kit she wanted the satisfaction of seeing Joel lowered into the ground and to know for certain that Joel was gone and buried forever.

No doubt she was originally intended to say those words to Martin - the entire Jesse story is riddled with holes - but putting that to one side he is probably a better bet than some of the others with whom she has been involved!  Jesse takes some time to think about it but when he returns to the hospital later he accepts the invitation.

A bit mixed this evening.  No sign of Lucy Fallon's bump as yet - the stoma will be hiding a lot.  I know that Gail was promised a good exit so I hope it will be.  I cannot believe Damon returned for a couple of phone calls and a beating - so there will be more I suspect.  No-one can keep a secret for long - Toyah tell Sam NOW.  And if Dee Dee actually did murder Joel why would she need to attend the funeral?  No doubt answers to all this and more will be along shortly..

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 5 July 2024

Good evening.  Once again my apologies for my extended absence.  I did manage to visit the Street and I may well add a report of the Tour (with added Alan Halsall) during the week.

However tonight on t'Street is going to be a difficult update.  You no doubt remember the old question do you want the good news or the bad news?  For Toyah in her hospital bed this needs to be re-written.  Do you want the not-so-good news or the bad news or the very bad news?  There is no sugar coating this so let us dive straight in.  R'Toyota is not pregnant - the test was a false positive.  Why was it a false positive - there is a growth on her ovary which means the blood test gave a false reading - and a growth must be cancer - so a biopsy is needed.  The very bad news will come later in this update (and there is a triple dose of that floating around).

Elsewhere Shona is ill - well she isn't, although she takes to her bed - but her absence means that Nina can lay a guilt trip on Roy as she works extra long shifts without a break and insists he puts on the apron of power and returns to the stove.  Much of the queue is caused by Kirk wanting mashed black pudding, two sausages and two rashers on brown bread please as he fancies the healthy option, whilst another customer wants sriracha sauce.  Roy eventually descends and struggles to get his apron over his head.  Evelyn is keen to ensure that the customers do not upset Roy and sits in the corner minding a cold brew for over an hour until Nina convinces her that all is well and Roy is safe in her hands.  Later Kirk comes in on the bun run and wants to order a Daniel - he cannot read his own handwriting.  Roy volunteers it should be a Danish and in return Kirk says he is glad to see Roy has returned.  Roy admits that it feels good to be back.  So all is well.  And Shona need not come in tomorrow as Roy will cover the shift he assures David as he is enjoying himself for the first time in a long while.

The wedge Kit has created between Bernie and the twins continues to fester and separate flowers are sent for his mother's funeral.  Kit does not appreciate the flowers from Bernie.  Only Dev as an outsider actually does not see Kit as a fine upstanding gentleman - meanwhile he advises Bernie on negotiating the short term problems.  Paul reveals that he has now lost the use of his left arm.  Kit returns and thanks the twins for their flowers but pointedly avoids thanking Bernie until Dev makes a point of it and calls him out.  Dev stands up for Bernie.

Along at Underworld Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin or as Alison King calls her "Little Opera House" which I shall adopt) is on her first day and is doing well until Kirk decides to tell her that there are 4000 types of potato in Peru.  However within seconds she manages to confuse Kirk on fried rice vs chow mein!  However being a teenage Opera House her phone is going very few seconds and needs instant attention at all times.  "LOH" observes that Fiz is not as dozy as she looks!  Carla eventually confiscates the phone.  Lisa (Swain) arrives at the end of the day to collect her daughter and Carla hands her the phone - and she notes that Betsy has had messages from JD (and that is not the whiskey - my guess is that it is Joel Deering).  Betsy wants to hang out with JD this evening but denies it is a boyfriend and Lisa says not tonight - Betsy's room is a tip and needs attention.  "LOH" rolls her eyes very realistically!

Sarah Lou has been walking a tightrope and the safety net is not very strong.  DS Swain feels that she needs to answer some questions down at the station under caution about the £10k she paid Nathan as it looks like she was seeking to pervert the course of justice.  {Money Laundering Alert - if you try to deposit significant sums of cash in a bank account the bank will ask numerous questions to prove the money is NOT laundered - so how did s shady character like Nathan deposit the money in his account?}  To stop the doo-doo enveloping her completely she rats out Gary as the provider of the money to enable Nathan to leave town.  Gary is trying to celebrate Lian's birthday when urgent messages from Sarah cause him to think up an excuse to rush outside of Speed Dahl so that she can explain why Swain is coming for him.  Needless to say Maria is certain that "something" is going on!

Talking of that bad news for Toyah - part 1 is the card Sam has made for her - with a mixture of Scrabble letters and chemical symbols.  Made of course before the bombshells above were delivered.

And in this triple bill of horror for R'Toyota Leanne has spent most of the day fussing about a special meeting at the AltoValent Institute where other members are gathering for a special session.  So she leaves to tell Rowan that she needs to be with Toyah - but he changes her mind as the session is so special and completing it will help Leanne support Toyah (and Leanne falls for it).  Leanne abandons her sister instead of being with her for the biopsy.  This "malware" session consists of a circle of individuals shouting at Leanne (who is blindfolded) about her misguided past as reality coded to Rowan and not shared with anyone - drug addict, cheat, adulteress, liar, filth, dealer, sold your body, arrogant, son conceived in adultery, do anything for money, arsonist, pure evil, manipulate a man with dementia, don't deserve to be a mother, hurting all around her, driving people like her stepson away, Simon hates you as a terrible mother, we see who you really are.  Then a repeated chant of "Broken" followed by "say it".  This activity is ended by Rowan as Leanne breaks down in tears.  Having broken her the assembly then praises her potential future self - once she is "free" - but of course she is not "free" - she is indoctrinated.  Later Rowan tells her that she has now advanced to Level Six.  Number Six, of course, was The Prisoner and was held captive at Portmeirion (strongly recommended as both a place to visit and a very nice hotel).  And Leanne has now been made a complete captive of the Institute.  And all this to help Toyah!  Neither Toyah or Nick want to hear any of the words emerging from Leanne's mouth when she eventually returns to Victoria Court.

David and Nick have several heart to hearts over Toyah - David suggesting that Nick tells Toyah to lose the baby before the revelations and later in the next bad news for Toyah Nick admits that he may no longer love Leanne as she is a different person and when David asks if he might in love with Toyah Nick admits that he does not know.

Sorry it is a little long this week.  There seemed to be a lot going on.  What was particularly nice to see was the knicker stitching at the factory - always one of my favourite settings plus LOTS of people in the cafe.  Having survived the long long period of covid and the odd person constituting a "rush" in the cafe for there to be lots of people around feels so much better.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 31 May 2024

In case anyone doubted my assertion that Joel was responsible for the disappearance of Lauren the reveal on Thursday evening and tonight's follow up showing just how evil he can be should ensure any belief that Nathan ought to be sent down (again) this time for a crime he did not commit needs to be put to one side.  Joel does his best to convince Nathan to plead guilty, implies to Dee Dee he has dropped Nathan as a client and simply looks like a bad man in every scene.  Bethany, Daniel and Sarah are pretty sure that Kit has planted the hair evidence in Nathan's van and are worrying that the evidence trail might convince.  (Nathan knows he has been stitched up - but does not know it was Kit).  A quick phone call to Nicky Wheatley (sat in Frescho's car park) enables her to broker a meeting between Bethany and Ellie - to be honest I am surprised Nicky did not insist on being at the meeting (I assume filming schedules prevented it).  Ellie confirms Nathan abused her but refuses to go to the police.  Ellie also decided to ensure her safety by having company hiding in her flat - yes the ubiquitous Joel emerges, praises her storytelling which has put Bethany off the scent and then treats her like dirt by being difficult over handing over a monetary thank you.  Heavens to Murgatroyd can his evilness be painted any bolder?

Roy meanwhile is suffering and decides that given the café a proper bottoming will help his angst.  He is interrupted by Lisa Swain (who is entitled to become Lisa as she is not really on police duties) popping by to advise Roy that all charges are dropped and that they will not be proceeding against Bobby either.  Roy confirms that he has no wish to make a statement concerning Griff Reynolds - it happened and that is the end of it.  As Lisa she also tells Roy that he needs to ensure his friends are properly valued - in particular Carla had only done it because she was his friend and he should put it right.  Roy later arrives at the factory and as best he can tries to make amends - which Carla acknowledges.

With Roy back at his cleaning Sam pops in needing to catch up with his best friend.  Roy is far from welcoming sending him on his way and telling Nina he is not fit to be a father figure to the lad.  Nina explains that all is not well between Leanne and Nick at the moment and Sam needs Roy - but Roy is not trusting anyone at the moment - Roscoe has disrupted any trust he has in other people.

Lisa manages to mention her difficult daughter once again at various points and Carla visits the police station for her intervention with Roy and as thanks indicates that perhaps she can assist the daughter with some work experience at the factory to see real life.  Careful Carla - you might be bribing a police officer - but even she calls Lisa, "Lisa" and not DS.  Apparently the factory owner is a complete nightmare - which brings a huge smile to Lisa's face.  And a few moments later man-eater Carla also has a huge smile across her face.

To close the episode it appears that Joel has an unhealthy obsession with Bethany - whilst he might have thrown her off the trail and even Daniel is telling her to leave it alone Joel is studying her picture online - does will there be some new horror for her?

Unusually this next bit is a SPOILER - do not read any further although it has been published widely - if you do not want to know any more.

Good news.  The wonderful Carol Royle is to visit the Street as Joel's mother.  Quite how a woman as wonderful as Ms Royle could be responsible for Joel I leave to the imagination of the writers.  OK I admit to a bit of a crush.  I wonder if she will be doing Star Tours when I visit the Street later in the month - can someone arrange it please?  In other news Glenda and Michael Bailey shared yet another scene tonight.  I liked James, I do not like Michael - they lost the wrong Bailey there.  So do Kit and Joel know each other or is there another explanation to his framing Nathan?  And on another positive note Beth had a little scene this evening where she was happy, not being grumpy, not being difficult - just a little ray of sunshine and laughter - can we have this Beth permanently please?
