Episode Review Friday 3 April 2026

Welcome.  Apologies for my absence last week, apparently football was more important than Weatherfield.  Tonight on t'Street we need to start with George who is in court for allegedly influencing the wills of those seeking his services.  In a somewhat perfunctory summary the judge ruled against George and set aside the will and ordered George to pay all costs.  [Inevitably this seems unfair - George did not ask for the court case and has to defend his good name, which he has lost, plus the proceeds of the will and also has to meet all the costs.  How do you prove a negative (that he did not influence the will maker?) - essentially the Shuttleworth business is dead and buried].

Todd continues to assure the world (and himself) that all is well with him and his best beloved even if he did go a little far yesterday in telling them how strong the two of them were.  Todd joins the depressed gang of George, Glenda and Christina for a recuperative drink following the case and then when he gets home Theo, upset at Todd not being home on time goes off on one.  Theo demonstrates his control by telling Todd to leave in such a way that Todd cannot leave.  Theo tells him to start acting likes he wants to be there.

At the Rovers Ben and Maggie are not talking to each other.  Maggie corners Will who once again demands that Will sees the reality of the situation and Will once again re-iterates that it was a stupid crush and nothing happened and the refusal to take a DNA test was simply that Megan knew it was Daniel's as nothing happened.  Maggie continues to press but Will admits nothing.  Maggie then says that she knows what it is to fall in love with someone you should not fall in love with.  [Hmmm].  However she implies it is all to do with the Buzzcocks which will mean nothing to Will who denies he is the victim and he sticks to his story.  Ben comes in with Eva and tells Maggie to stop terrorising her grandson.  Will and Eva leave and Maggie tells Ben she was close to Will confessing.  Later Ben storms into the back room to have another go at Maggie.  They repeat the Will story and argue with Maggie pointing out the many things she has done to protect the family - she had to raise Ben on her own because she had to.  Ben voices the thought that perhaps the wrong parent died (referring to his late father); if his father was there Ben would be so much better off as his father, Alan, was such a good man.  This sets Maggie off who ends up saying that Ben is taking Alan's side against his own flesh and blood.  Even Ben is confused.  Maggie tries to lie her way out of it.  Maggie leaves again.  Later Ben and Eva discuss the revelation - but Ben cannot get it out of his mind.

In prison Debbie is cheered by Lou's return from confinement away from the wing, she is even more surprised when told she has visitors.  Kev and Jack are there.  She asks Jack how is his father - and then tells Jack that he might not be honest with her.  To be fair Kev looks a lot better than he has for ages.  She tells them she is knitting a jumper for Carl and it looks more like a tank top.  However it seems her appeal is on the horizon so she may soon be home.  Debbie however cannot open some packaging - and although she says she is doing well we know she is declining.  A little later Lou gives her a four leaf clover - well five leaf as it has 25% extra luck.  Lou is sure she will be going home.

Bethany and Jodie visit the Bistro and David has given Jodie a voucher entitling her to a 15% discount or David will set the dog on Nick (it is a Yorkshire Terrier).  Bethany tries to get some life history out of Jodie and fails (why was she tied up in Graham's van?).  They have several drinks.  Daniel emerges from the toilets and Bethany notes he is feeling depressed after his latest relationship disaster with all of his women since Sinead turning into crazy nutjobs he tells them so Bethany thanks him for the compliment.  He reminds her of the Turkish cosmetic surgery.  Jodie tells Daniel to do one.  Adam intervenes as he thinks his uncle may have had one too many.  Daniel apologises and leaves the girls.  Jodie notes that Daniel is a decent looking fella.  Bethany also changes her mind on Jodie unfortunately.  In the corner however Daniel bemoans always picking women with issues and not someone who is normal - like Jodie.  (Can we all see where this is going?  Yes Daniel is going to have another nutjob girlfriend).

If Daniel and Adam are drinking in the Bistro and Ken, Tracy and Amy are drinking in the Rovers then who is minding Bertie given that no-one trusts Cassie or Steve and Aunty Emily is no longer on call?  Enquiring minds need to know.  Apparently in another soap far far away Graham is going to be at the receiving end of an individual interested in Jodie's whereabouts next week.  I assume someone is about to be deadified as we term it in this house.  My personal preference is the nasty witch who brought a court case against R'George, followed by R'Gary who has never  paid for Rana.  More likely Theo but killing an undercover policeman is pretty serious.  I can't see it being Megan but who knows?

Oh and a final word for Debbie Webster or rather Sue Devaney.  The good lady wife who has a little experience of those with dementia always remarks how well she is portraying the changes and decline.  I can only sit there and enjoy the performance she gives every time she is on screen.

Episode Review Friday 17 October 2025

Good evening.  Asha returns home with Dev trying to restore and rebuild her but the task is of a Sisyphean size as she is unable to find any way out of the mental black hole into which she has fallen - she has completely lost her way.  Indeed she goes for a lie down when Bernie is in the middle of a funny story (well Dev chuckled).  Bernie is still looking for a way to get back at Naomi - but Dev feels all they can worry about is Asha.

Finding her way is Bethany who is working at R'Audrey's who also has Hope in for a work experience day.  A customer is peddling unlicenced weight loss drugs which Hope decides to liberate.  This leads to a tussle between Bethany and Cassie defending her delinquent grandchild during which Bethany's stoma is dislodged.  All messy.  Eventually Hope admits her theft of the pills but Bethany calls out the customer for attempting to sell the tablets to an underage person so the police are not called.  Which is worse - Hope being bullied online or Asha being bullied to her face?  Why two such similar events within a short timescale?  However Cassie notes how well Bethany talked to Hope about the dangers of falling for people peddling drugs that probably mean that Bethany will discover a new career to pursue.  And of course Daniel is once again teaching at Hope's school.

Talking of bullying, Todd's car (did we know he had a car - even an old rackety one which is in need of significant expenditure?) breaks down as he and Theo were going out for the day.  By the end of the programme Theo (who is no doubt going through an expensive divorce and does not seem to do much scaffolding work) has managed to get a new car for Todd to drive.

Meanwhile Betsy appears to have been a little outspoken, exchanging a few words with Inspector Costello and then allegedly attacking a police car and resisting arrest, although no-one can find the CCTV footage to back up the story.  Why was a DI at the same place as Betsy who denies it all.  It becomes clear that Costello has faked it all to get the "situation" under control.  Outcome is that Betsy spends a second night inside (which ignores the standard 24 hour time limit); no-one phoned Lisa from the station the first night and Adam fails to get her out at the end of the 24 hours - she may have resisted arrest but PACE has to be observed.

Becky has two private meetings in ginnels with Costello where she makes it clear that she will only be heading back to Spain providing Lisa and Becky are on the flight with her.  Meanwhile Becky talks Lisa into letting her spend the night at Number 6 Coronation Street, something which Carla is not told when she has a video call with Lisa.  Carla does however make it clear just how little she likes Becky who can hear what she is saying, as Carla does not know the skunk is in the house.

Tracy goes to some lengths to try and get Cassie out of Number 1 and back to Tyrone's wangling some concert tickets from the bassist of the Drunken Wastrels - a band that Fiz would like to see.  However Fiz is not falling for it and the tickets are rejected.  Tracy warns Cassie to stay out or her wardrobe - however that is like a red rag to a rampaging bull.

The bad news is that poor Hope is being endlessly bullied with messages on her phone and so we are presumably going to have the horrors of online bullying for the next few weeks.

I felt this evening that for this evening the team had decided that they would treat us to a total fantasy.  I am only hopeful that it was all a dream; plus point tonight we did not see the inside of the hospital.  Apologies but feeling jaded by the balance of the stories.

Episode Review Friday 3 October 2025

Good evening.  This evening's events happened on a completely different Street to last week's as there is no sign of Abi/Carl/Kev, (bring her back) Jenny Bradley has departed and another lady appears having once again failed down in that London.  After some cross words when Dev explains to Bernie why Naomi has scrapped her planned court case, Asha applies some healing balm and the wedding between Dev and Bernie goes ahead and all is well - apart from Asha - is she able to hold it together for her first shift back on duty - she tells Sienna that she is grateful for her telling Dev the truth - but the smile mask soon slips.

(Bring her back) Jenny's departure has left Brian, in the new much smaller Kabin, short handed.   Both Christina and Jake turn down his entreaties to become wage slaves.  Jake claims to have some side-hustles already (county line drug dealing probably).

Theo has "gone missing".  Jake (Gary and Izzy's son) hands a phone into the Kabin which Brian passes onto Todd.  Later when Todd is having a convenient shower Theo pops into the flat, listens to Todd's answering machine message, grabs a can of beer and leaves again, leaving the phone where he found it.  Around at the precinct Theo thanks Jake for his assistance in handing in his phone and making out that it is all part of a big joke.  Most people would regard such as actions as "gaslighting" - which refers to the title of a 1938 play (Gas Light) by Patrick Hamilton which I saw in London some years ago with Rosamund Pike in a starring role.  It deserves another production.  Meanwhile Todd tries to report a missing Theo to the police who rightly are not interested and frankly nor am I.  Have the soaps not done coercive control to death in recent years - it is not pleasant and it is not entertainment.

PC Heywood has a car thief in the interview room and thinks that DC Green might get a better story out of the girl.  He is a little surprised to find Bethany Platt in front of him.  She has borrowed her recent employer's car for the trip north and had arranged with another person to drive it back south.  It seems that she has managed to screw up another big opportunity in that London and she is back with about £200 in her pocket, homeless and unemployed as she tells Sarah-Lou later once DC Green has straightened things out with the car owner (who apparently enjoys her liquid fuelled research sessions) and delivered to her mother who says that of course she can move in once again.  (Slippery slope - the stories I could tell!).

Shona gets in another mention for the devil child inside whilst looking as right as ninepence.  Amazing pregnancy.  Bethany suggests that if it is a girl then perhaps they should call it Gail or Audrey!

Inevitably Daniel and Bethany's paths cross within seconds (odd as we have hardly seen Daniel for weeks) and this time they manage not to end up in bed together.  However Bethany and Daniel meet for a catch up in the Bistro where he apologises and she makes it clear that they will not be getting back together again, ever.  Indeed she would rather be celibate and live in a monastery at the North Pole.  Daniel says that he agrees with her - he does not feel they are compatible.

Talking of DC Green things are looking up for him.  Costello sees him with Carla who is fed up with Becky (sorry Aunty Kim) and like me does not believe the story they have been sold concerning the need for her disappearance and that it is now allegedly safe for her to return.  Carla also suspects that "Aunty Kim" wants to re-instate the ante-disappearance relationships position.  DC Green promises to make contact with DI Crawley who might know more - but Crawley does not return his call and instead contacts Costello.  Costello thinks that flattery and praise (would that be "Plattery") might throw DC Green off the scent and suggests that if Kit does as he is told then he will become DS Green in no time at all as he has the power to ensure that happens.  Kit expresses the view that he wishes to become the best detective there is.

In an almost throwaway line in t'Rovers Gemma reminds Chesney about the need to make his own decisions in line with the self-empowerment podcast.  Looks like Gemma is getting turned on by the thought of "happy places".  Which in Chesney's case include Gemma having her kit off.

With (bring her back) Jenny gone the road to George's heart is almost unobstructed.  Glenda produces a list of pros and cons on Christina for George; it is short on pros and has some long cons.  She is delivering it when Christina arrives and gets to read R'Glenda's opinions!  However Christina rebuts the worst and at the Bistro over what I think was sushi and chop sticks George and Christina make clear their feelings.  It seems that the two will soon be going for a ride together as he declares her to be a suitable young filly.  The rest of the conversation is not fit for retelling here.

Speaking personally I do think that Christina's redemption arc does not really work - too much too soon given that it appears to be at the cost of both Daisy and (bring her back) Jenny.  Clearly Carla and Kit are on to something "nasty in the police woodshed" at Weatherfield cop shop - but is it a tale of back street notherners in their back-to-back terraces?  And of course Bethany is off to the North Pole to live like a hermit and Daniel is going to have a lobotomy if they ever get back together again.  Plain as the noses on their faces.  If I say any more about Theo it might be my excommunication from the blog - but please do not send him back to Ambridge.
