Vicky Myers Talks About Carla, Betsy, And D.S Swain Fandom!

Since becoming a series regular, firm fan favourite, Corrie Copper DS Lisa
Swain, has had her character's backstory swiftly fleshed out. Following her confession to Carla about her partner's death in service, we've now met her daughter, Betsy, and that friendship with Carla has set X fandom alight with talks of a possible romance.

Last Monday I had the immense pleasure of being in sunny Salford, in a posh ITV Coronation Street media suite* to listen to Vicky Myers tell us about DS Swain's latest investigation: her daughter!

Hi Vicky, We are now learning more about Lisa's backstory. How important has it been for you to learn about Lisa's family background and her story?

"It's massively important! What we do, it's all about displaying truth and authenticity for the characters we play. To know that, and the tragic death of Becky, the impact it would have had on their relationship. I ask myself, I wonder what it was like before as the three of them, how it has changed, and the impact the death would have had on Betsy, with her being in her early teens. Lisa thought she was doing the right thing by returning to work, but, it appears to have pushed Betsy further away"

You've been in the show a while and we are now getting a more 'rounded' Lisa with the casting of her daughter Betsy. How important was it, and how much were you involved in the casting process?

"I was very involved, which was brilliant, and thanks to the team here for giving me that opportunity. It was quite tense, and I was involved in the initial shortlist, the screen test, quite a few screen tests and I also learnt so much about what's potentially going to happen. We did a few scenes we may see - in time to come!"

What is the relationship like between Betsy and Lisa?

"To put it mildly, it's strained, fractured, and very broken: they are both vulnerable. Lisa remembers being a teenager: if told not to do something, she would have done it, regardless. Lisa is fiercely protective of her now the family dynamic has changed, but she can't be too much of a disciplinarian as she's now 16"

Betsy Blackmails Carla?

How would Lisa feel if she learned what Betsy has been up to with Joel and Carla?

"I think she would be furious! Lisa brought her up with morals and because of the profession, she's in. Also, blackmail is contrived, and she would want to know why Betsy felt she needed to do that. She would be disappointed"

Lisa is quite a cool customer and doesn't have many friends, but appears to have made one in Carla. What is it about Carla, that has made Lisa show vulnerability, and a blossoming friendship forming?

"the car scene (they shared) where Lisa was very vulnerable, Carla showed some vulnerability too and shared a bit of her life, the story about Liam, and with Peter. I think she can see a lot of herself in Carla: they are similar in many ways -she's a powerful woman - opinionated, and a businesswoman with a huge heart. I think it would be lovely for her to have a friend"

What has the public reaction been to Lisa?

"It's been pretty overwhelming, actually, in a lovely way. I've received many messages, letters, and friendship bracelets. It's been a real privilege and honour to portray this character. People can relate to her. Representation and inclusivity are so important: with that comes responsibility. I do take that on board and not take it lightly. To receive so many letters is quite something"

Thanks, Vicky!

At the start of this interview, Vicky noticed my 'Roy Cropper Is Innocent' T-shirt and joked that she should have worn hers. She looked across at me (very arresting eyes) and I swear I thought I was heading for Weatherfield Police Station, lol! Jokes aside, she's a fab character/actress and it's clear I'm not the only one that thinks that!

What are your thoughts on DS Swain's backstory? Let me know I am @rybazoxo on X

* Do you remember Rowan taking Leanne to that restaurant in last week's episode? I'm 99% certain this was that same room. Keep your eyes peeled for my next cast interview for more on that story!

Coronation Street Episode Review Monday 1st July

Always a treat to review a Damon/Jonathan double header, the holy grail of Corrie eps.

Steve has decided to treat himself to a birthday bath (hopefully not a euphemism) whilst Ken tries to rustle up some birthday guests for a "surprise" birthday do. He only manages to get Rita and Brian, both of whom complain about the "party". You'd think Rita'd be happy with the free booze and Brian with the free anything. Steve discovers Tim is at Weathy County (a re-dressed Chariot Square set) for the unveiling of the Orpington bust, so he and Cassie decide to Thelma and Louise it and get their revenge by replacing the statuette with a Castaway-style football with a face scrawled on it. Later, as Tim and Sally go upstairs for a bit of afternoon delight (Sally's fascinator must've made Tim think they were attending a wedding) they find Tommy's head in their bed. Steve and Cassie are the mob!

Amy is already depressed that Tracy hasn't accompanied Tommy to the unveiling, more so when her mum messages to tell her daughter that she wants her to run the florists. Mary's right there, Tracy! She "uploads" to Leanne, who is Level 5 now, she has to start recruiting and she gets Amy to watch an Institute video, which impresses young Ms Barlow. Even Toyah's impromptu counselling doesn't put her off.

Meanwhile, Bernie has agreed to meet with Kit in the pub and they will tell Paul and Gemma together that he is their half-brother. Kit has set Bernie up though, he goes straight to Paul and Billy's flat and spills the beans, acting like he's concerned for Bernie, who cooks her goose by throwing a remote control at him. What a rotter! I like him though, he's a good mix of caring, sneaky and vengeful. Obvs he will become a member of the extended Winter-Brown-Foreman-Mayhew family eventually, and I reckon he might be the one to buy Gemma and Ches's house and rent it back to them.

Talking of houses, George agrees to give his to Glenda, although he didn't really have much choice given that Glenda has changed the locks, moved in and dumped all his stuff at Eileen's. Mary says she doesn't like the portrait of Archie looking at her in the morning as if she wouldn't have been chasing Roy Hudd around the coffins if they'd been in the soap at the same time. Anyway, this doesn't have the desired effect (Michael and Glenda getting back together) but give it 'til Friday, assuming there's an episode then.

Finally, Deedee asks Joel to move in with her, separate bedrooms of course (they can't live at his because of the teenagers chained to various radiators). This means Adam has to move out. I hear there's an undertaker's house in Oakhill going begging?

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Monday 1 July 2024

Monday 1st July 2024 at 9pm

Bernie waits for Kit in the Rovers to discuss how they tell Gemma and Paul they have a brother, unaware he is already over at the flat breaking the news. How will the twins react?

Steve’s birthday party is not exactly what he was expecting and he is gutted to discover Tim and Sally are at the unveiling of Tommy O’s bust. Cassie offers to drive him to the party to confront them. Once there they discover a way to get revenge on Tommy once and for all. What have they got planned?

Toyah is horrified when she finds Leanne showing Amy an institute video to help relieve her stress and realises she is considering investing.

When George approaches Michael hoping that he might be able to talk some sense into Glenda, he reveals that they’re no longer together as he disapproves of her recent behaviour.
