Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 31 May 2024

In case anyone doubted my assertion that Joel was responsible for the disappearance of Lauren the reveal on Thursday evening and tonight's follow up showing just how evil he can be should ensure any belief that Nathan ought to be sent down (again) this time for a crime he did not commit needs to be put to one side.  Joel does his best to convince Nathan to plead guilty, implies to Dee Dee he has dropped Nathan as a client and simply looks like a bad man in every scene.  Bethany, Daniel and Sarah are pretty sure that Kit has planted the hair evidence in Nathan's van and are worrying that the evidence trail might convince.  (Nathan knows he has been stitched up - but does not know it was Kit).  A quick phone call to Nicky Wheatley (sat in Frescho's car park) enables her to broker a meeting between Bethany and Ellie - to be honest I am surprised Nicky did not insist on being at the meeting (I assume filming schedules prevented it).  Ellie confirms Nathan abused her but refuses to go to the police.  Ellie also decided to ensure her safety by having company hiding in her flat - yes the ubiquitous Joel emerges, praises her storytelling which has put Bethany off the scent and then treats her like dirt by being difficult over handing over a monetary thank you.  Heavens to Murgatroyd can his evilness be painted any bolder?

Roy meanwhile is suffering and decides that given the cafĂ© a proper bottoming will help his angst.  He is interrupted by Lisa Swain (who is entitled to become Lisa as she is not really on police duties) popping by to advise Roy that all charges are dropped and that they will not be proceeding against Bobby either.  Roy confirms that he has no wish to make a statement concerning Griff Reynolds - it happened and that is the end of it.  As Lisa she also tells Roy that he needs to ensure his friends are properly valued - in particular Carla had only done it because she was his friend and he should put it right.  Roy later arrives at the factory and as best he can tries to make amends - which Carla acknowledges.

With Roy back at his cleaning Sam pops in needing to catch up with his best friend.  Roy is far from welcoming sending him on his way and telling Nina he is not fit to be a father figure to the lad.  Nina explains that all is not well between Leanne and Nick at the moment and Sam needs Roy - but Roy is not trusting anyone at the moment - Roscoe has disrupted any trust he has in other people.

Lisa manages to mention her difficult daughter once again at various points and Carla visits the police station for her intervention with Roy and as thanks indicates that perhaps she can assist the daughter with some work experience at the factory to see real life.  Careful Carla - you might be bribing a police officer - but even she calls Lisa, "Lisa" and not DS.  Apparently the factory owner is a complete nightmare - which brings a huge smile to Lisa's face.  And a few moments later man-eater Carla also has a huge smile across her face.

To close the episode it appears that Joel has an unhealthy obsession with Bethany - whilst he might have thrown her off the trail and even Daniel is telling her to leave it alone Joel is studying her picture online - does will there be some new horror for her?

Unusually this next bit is a SPOILER - do not read any further although it has been published widely - if you do not want to know any more.

Good news.  The wonderful Carol Royle is to visit the Street as Joel's mother.  Quite how a woman as wonderful as Ms Royle could be responsible for Joel I leave to the imagination of the writers.  OK I admit to a bit of a crush.  I wonder if she will be doing Star Tours when I visit the Street later in the month - can someone arrange it please?  In other news Glenda and Michael Bailey shared yet another scene tonight.  I liked James, I do not like Michael - they lost the wrong Bailey there.  So do Kit and Joel know each other or is there another explanation to his framing Nathan?  And on another positive note Beth had a little scene this evening where she was happy, not being grumpy, not being difficult - just a little ray of sunshine and laughter - can we have this Beth permanently please?

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 7 May 2021

We open tonight with Abi and Kev not getting married but instead being at Seb's bedside and almost immediately receiving less than great news from the doctor that the CT scans are not showing what they would like to see and they will need to do some brain stem scans.  Kev vanishes to unoragnise the wedding sending the flowers to the local old people's home and whilst on the Street telling Summer and Billy what a state Seb and Nina are in, Summer is looking worried..  Abi is willing Seb to recover. - and suddenly her phone takes delivery of the last message he left for her hours before.  Similarly Roy is willing Nina to wake up as the sedatives have been withdrawn.

Dev breaks the news to Asha about her friend and Dev refers to it as pure savagery - and that some things in life just do not make sense.  Dev also tells her it happened down by the industrial park - which gives her something to ponder.  Summer finds that Kelly girl in the cafe (which is surprisingly open - Roy is at the hospital, Aggie does not work there any longer, Alex is in Scotland so must be Bernie today) and she looks like she is in a right state.  Apparently according to Kelly, Seb and Nina left soon after Summer and she saw nothing herself.  Kelly does not like all of Summer's questions.  Once on the Street Kelly leaves Corey a message saying they need to talk.

Once she gets home Asha gives Corey the third degree - but as he says he was home by half eight.  Lucky that.  Asha observes that if she and Corey had stayed later they would have been able to even up the numbers.  Corey goes out to buy bread without bird seed (good grief there is something I actually agree with Corey on!!).  Back at the Kate Oates Memorial Hospital (or is that Emmerdale) a blonde police person is asking if there were reasons for the attack - Sally posits they could have jumped the queue at the Post Office (!).  Nina has the implant of a trainer on her thigh (someone should take a picture and check Eli's shoes).  Police questioning seems to be driven by Abi's conviction record.  Continuity also has a problem, Abi is wearing a white "Bride" rosette on her black dress - but it moves to the plastic apron and back.  Given the state she is in she would not stop to repin it on the apron!

Corey bobs round to R'Toyota's flat where Kelly is lying low with a hangover.  He has a simple message for her - keep it zipped (above).  She responds that the weak link is Summer.  Corey pops along to the caff and gives Summer a stern talking to.  She is not to talk about the joy riding or there will be no Oxford for her.  So it would be better for her and Billy if she kept quiet.  She agrees, thinking Corey is a mate.  Somewhat later Kelly denies any knowledge of events to Toyah.

Another superb soliloquy from Royston to his beloved niece seeking to get her to awaken and simply call him "Roymond" in her disapproving way, he would be extremely relieved!  At which her eyes flicker and Nina is back with us.  Along the way Abi is seeking some response from Sebastian - but there is nary a flicker.  With Seb being tested Abi pops in to see Nina and the latter's memory is a bit scrambled - but she does remember meeting Corey.  Abi makes a run for it to the Street where she immediately finds Corey and asks him what he knows.  He says he was home by eight thirty and Asha confirms that she was at home with him.  Later Corey says he was not lying - just not trying to provoke Abi in case she turned nasty.  Corey denies having anything to do with the attack and asks Asha to provide an alibi.  The police interview Abi - but whilst she can remember Corey and Kelly laughing and a slap she cannot remember much else.  With Seb the first round of stem cell tests are inconclusive and they will be repeated later.

Mary tries to get a private word with Asha to get her to leave Corey - and he accuses Mary of simply listening to gossip and jumping to conclusions thereby isolating Asha from one of her main supports.  Asha decides to visit Nina in hospital - but is far more concerned for herself and Corey than for either Nina or Seb - which Roy spots and calls her out on it (above).  Asha repeats her story that she was at home with Corey at the time in question.  Asha returns home - Corey is gaming and he again denies touching either Seb or Nina.  He reassures her that the hospital will be able to get Nina back to full health.  As she continues to question him he gets quite nasty - until Asha admits she repeated the story about that they were at home together.  Soon Corey is watching TV as if nothing has happened.

Meanwhile the doctor finds Abi and Kev.  The tests have shown no brain life and she advises that Seb has died.  Abi feels she has failed to protect her son and then breaks down and sobs at his bedside (above).  Roy tells Nina, Kev calls Eileen, the word will soon spread.

Which wraps it up for this week.  I have never been keen on Seb and never invested in him.  I have felt that he was hanging around for no useful purpose, no proper job, no proper relationship, no real interaction with other Street residents, on-off-on with Alina and Emma, on/off/on/off (I never could care which) with Abi and given the raw end of an HIV diagnosis.  Something about the actor, the role and the writing never worked for me.  So suddenly we have him hooked up with Nina out of nothing and now despatched into the care of Gorgeous George.  I am relieved.  I think the only Street resident I want removed more is Gary Windass.  I have no doubt I am in a minority of one.  I will admit tonight that he acted his socks off.

There won't be any Corrie Comicals this week as there is not a lot about which to be funny when things like this are the centre of the story.

Corrie Comicals week ending 4 October 2019

Time to find a little bit of sparkle in the Street which is proving a little more difficult than normal at present (hence my absence last week).  But first a question.  If Paul slept on the sofa and Billy and Summer were in their own beds where is Sean sleeping?  I thought he had Billy's sofa?  You have to admit that is a very baggy top which Sophie is wearing (above right).  To be honest I am not sure that they are attempting to disguise Brooke Vincent's bump any longer; so when she started looking at the snaps being posted by a far distant Kate Connor you could almost sense her impending departure!

And above Royston is delivering a nice piece of philosophy - in full he said:  "I read an article recently that suggested that many business people are now turning to philosophers for guidance.  They nudge and question.  They take people on uncomfortable journeys and force people to confront the truth.  It's just a thought".  All of which gives Sophie food for thought!  I like a nice bit of thinking from Royston.

Apparently Brian likes Cathy in her hat and she is about to tell new recruit Asha about "the other night" and you can just see Asha rolling her eyes at the about to be imparted TMI - but Cathy just about stops herself in time as we and Asha just do not want to know!

Light relief on Wednesday was entrusted to Dev.  The first item for our delectation was when he unwrapped a nasal hair trimmer - enthusing that his is better than Steve's.  A little later he was asked by Asha if she could go "on a date".  So with usual sensitivity Dev applies to looking after his children he summons Mary (who actually made reference to the beast with two backs) and they sit down to talk birds and bees attracting Asha's scorn - she is NOT going to get "knocked up" (and she probably has been taught more than they both know at school)!

A little touch of then and now.  Sue Devaney returned after 34 years to take up once again the role of Debbie Webster, Kevin's sister.  She is now a successful business woman and we also learn that she is the only person who was still talking to the now late Auntie Vi.  She was originally on the Street less than a year and this is clearly a fleeting visit but welcome none the less.  Note the similarities in wardrobe too - biggish earrings, necklace.

For those who have heard the Conversation Street podcast (and if not why not?) here is the shot where Sophie was hiding in Dev's aisles.

Maria is telling Gary and Fiz about her dinner this evening with Michelle, Robert, Ryan, Alya and Ali.  She is not keen on it - but for the benefit of those reading the subtitles she actually said she would prefer a quiet night in with Ali.  Neither Alya or Maria have given any indication of preferring the company of females (to males that is) that I can recall!

You cannot make "Bugsy Malone" without a range of splurge guns - personally I doubt they would be loaded before the final dress rehearsal - sadly at Asha's school they are loaded and ready at early run throughs - and she gets full blast from the mean kid who fancied the boy!  If this is Asha's life you might just grasp why she wants a change.

Not sure if I will be here next week as I am visiting Leeds to check out the studios and external sets of Emmerdale Farm which is another docu-drama from the ITV stable.
