Dear Santa
This Christmas on Coronation Street, I would like to see the following:
1. Rita singing in the Rovers.
2. Tim getting drunk and seeing Santa Claus sitting on top of Sally's conservatory roof.
3. Gemma getting tiddly on sherry with Rita in her flat
4. Jenny flaming Bradley snogging the face off Johnny Connor at the Underworld Christmas party.
5. Ken to make a full recovery and kick some butt in the Barlow house.
6. Mary and Norris to share a kiss under the mistletoe.
7. Number 6 repeated, this time with Freddie and Audrey.
8. Eileen to throw Phelan out on Christmas Eve, he has to wander the streets in the snow.
9. Gail's sprouts to be cooked to perfection
10. Snow. Lots of snow. There's nothing quite as magical as a Weatherfield winter wonderland.
But never mind me, what would make YOUR Christmas viewing extra special on Corrie?

AIDAN FINALLY SEES PROOF OF MARIA’S INNOCENCE Aidan heads off to visit some old contacts in the hope of drumming up business but as he pulls up outside a factory he’s shocked to spot Caz hurrying in, clearly on her way to work. Having blagged his way into the factory, Aidan scours the shop floor for Caz. Clocking Aidan, Caz does a runner through the fire exit and Aidan gives chase. With Caz nowhere to be seen, Aidan calls the police. Will this be enough proof to have Maria released?
ZEEDAN MAKES A GRAND GESTURE Yasmeen calls in the bistro and begs Zeedan to follow his heart and marry Rana and not to let Sharif’s mistakes ruin his life. Begging Rana to give Zeedan another chance, Leanne cajoles her into her car and drives her to the wedding venue. Zeedan greets Rana outside the venue and reveals that everything is in place for them to get married there and then if she’ll change her mind. Will a shell-shocked Rana agree?
TIM DIGS HIMSELF OUT OF A HOLE Having acquired a trailer, Tyrone and Freddie set off in search of valuable scrap they can sell. Meanwhile Sally promises Tim a surprise but he’s underwhelmed when she reveals the gift is that she’s rented an allotment for him. As Tim settles down in his new shed, Sally presents him with a spade and tells him to get cracking. But when Tyrone and Freddie return with an ancient looking vase, Tim suddenly realises he could have some fun with his new allotment.
ELSEWHERE Having found the twins’ share of the scratch card winnings, Erica tells Dev she’s sick of being taken for a mug and wonders if she should move out. Worried, Dev confronts the guilty twins but is it too little too late? Mary confides in Erica that she’s found a lump in her breast.

Hayley Tamaddon rocks as Roxie in Chicago The Musical
I'm a firm believer in not knowing what our favourite Corrie stars are truly capable of until - and unless - we see them outside of Coronation Street.
But Andrea had something about her, a cheeky sense of humour, that could have been exploited more. Remember when she got drunk and sang Tainted Love? If only we'd seen that side of Andrea more, who knows what might have happened. As it was, she left Corrie with Lloyd in the live episode to mark ITV's 60th birthday in September last year.
And what of Hayley Tamaddon since then?
Well, she's currently starring in the touring production of Chicago the Musical and I went to the show at the Sunderland Empire last night. Hayley plays the starring role of Roxie Hart and she sings and dances her way through the show in fantastic style.
Despite my seat being up at the back of the dress circle while watching Chicago, Hayley projected such emotion, sexiness, acting ability and chemistry all the way up to my row - and beyond. She really was amazing to watch. Her singing voice is fantastic, comic timing is perfection and I can't rave on enough about how flamin' great she was.
I've seen Chicago live on stage before, in that London many years ago. Admittedly, I only went to see it back then because Alison Moyet (of whom I'm a BIG fan) was playing the role of Mama Morton. This time around that role goes to Mica Paris who is well worth seeing too.
If you get a chance to see Chicago the Musical at a theatre near you, do go. The UK touring schedule is here and if you're in the north-east, it's running at Sunderland for the rest of this week.

Coronation Street Blog interview with Samia Longchambon
It was a real pleasure to meet and interview Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor in Coronation Street. Samia was a great interviewee - very interesting, very warm and she really ran with the questions and was happy to explore possibilities and issues.
Viewers have witnessed Maria’s distress as Caz, on whom she took pity and took in when she was desperate, has turned on Maria, when she rejected Caz’s romantic suggestions and then told her that it would be best if Caz left.
I began by asking Samia if she enjoyed seeing herself play Maria on television
I watch the show to see where I’ve gone wrong and to see what I should do differently – to criticise myself, basically. I think I’ll give myself a day off from it on Christmas Day though.
Do you feel that you are following in Deirdre’s footsteps, when she was put in jail and the campaign Free the Weatherfield One began?
That’s what I thought when I first heard about this storyline – although Deidre wasn’t guilty and Maria kind of is. She’s not guilty the first time they put her behind bars – she’s not guilty of murder.
She’s going to be someone’s b.... I can’t say that word! She would not cope. I keep saying she’s going to come out with a tattoo of someone’s name on her chest, or a teardrop tattoo on her face or something. She wouldn’t cope very well.
Aidan and Maria are getting closer. Is it love or lust?
Caz is unwittingly pushing them both together. Aidan is convinced Maria hasn’t killed Caz. Anyone who really knows her, knows she’s not capable of murder. David is really behind Maria and Aidan. He is really gunning for her to be found not guilty. It pushes Maria and Aidan closer together over a period of time. You see her warming more and more to him. There’s that attraction there between them both. It’s building and building. There’s a couple of times when you think, are they going to kiss? and then they don’t, or they get interrupted. If you see how I look in these episodes, it’s certainly not lust.
I’ve been
fighting with the make-up girls for more make-up and they’re like, nope, you
wouldn’t be wearing make up for this. So, it has to
be something deeper for Aidan, because I’m not looking my best. I think he
genuinely does love her. He just wants to protect her. He sees himself as her
knight in shining armour really and so does she. He’s her hero. He believes in
her when a lot of other people don’t. Aidan’s the one person who believes she’s
innocent, apart from Kirk.
He’s with Eva, so Maria’s aware that she shouldn’t be having these feelings, but she just can’t help it. They’re family as well – there’s that long history – she was married to his cousin. There’s a back history that we haven’t seen. There are a couple of times when he makes her feel really cheap. He kisses her, then won’t tell Eva – he wants his cake and eat it
What advice would you give to Maria concerning Aidan?
My advice to Maria would be to stay away! I would run a mile from him. Even Shayne is saying that himself. He’s like, ‘God, I can’t defend myself.’ When she finds the scissors, she realises that Caz has well and truly stitched her up. She realises then that it’s really serious and she could go to prison. Maria and Aidan are making the worst decisions ever – they’re hiding evidence when they should just be telling the truth.
And what about Liam in all this?
There’s a really sweet scene where Maria's’s cuddling Liam on the sofa, because she’s fearing the worst – she’s fearing she’s going to get sent down. They’re watching the film Up and she says, ‘I love a happy ending’. It’s really sad because you know she’s never going to get a happy ending.
Why does Maria let Adam Barlow turn her head?
Adam Barlow, ah yes. – it’s making Aidan jealous. He doesn’t really want her. She’s being reckless - she sees Adam as a distraction and a way to get Aidan jealous.
So is Maria really in love with Aidan?
Yes, I think she is in love with him. It’s not just a sexual thing. She does love him. Going through this together, he’s got her back no matter what. It means a lot to her – she does love him.
And what will happen when/if Maria goes to prison? And what about Eva?
Two possible prison sentences in the space of a month – that’s quite a record that is! For different things. If she does go to prison, she won’t come out the same person. It definitely would change her, but I’m not sure how. The usual sentence is 12 months if you have a sham marriage – it depends if they make an example of her. Eva and Maria are polar opposites. If I was him, I’d stick to Eva – she’s far less trouble!
And Caz?
No one seems to have warmed to Caz’s character, which means we’re doing a good job. She’s a true baddy. I hope everyone is #TeamMaria on this one.
Do you enjoy acting out the bad times?
This year is up there with when she lost Liam – but then she got engaged to Liam’s murderer. This year may take the biscuit though.
And what about Luke?
Luke is too reliable. She doesn’t go for reliable and safe – she just didn’t have that spark with him. - it’s like careful what you wish for.
What would you like to give Maria for Christmas?
For Christmas, I want freedom for my character. Liberty for Maria – that would be lovely. Don’t know if she’s going to get it though. Peace and love for everyone else.
Do you feel lucky to have your job?
This year has been amazing. It’s been one fab story after another. I enjoy it – I love my job. But, when I’m at home, I try and just be mum.
Does Maria annoy you?
Maria frustrates me a lot. I love her, obviously, I’ve stuck with her my whole adult life, so there’s something about this character that I do love. But, despite everything she’s been through, she’s still got this incredible naivety – she’s so gullible. It’s really frustrating. When I read the scripts I think, “God, you’re so stupid!” You will her to have a happy ending, but I don’t think she’s ever going to get it.
How do you switch off after a drama-filled day on set?
I try not to take it home with me. Especially this stuff - it’s been really dark. You’re spending ten hours a day pretending to be depressed and fed up and looking at a prison sentence. So I’ve tried to leave it here at Media City and then go back to being mum at home. When I leave the gates, I put on my happy music and the drive home is my way of shaking off the stress.
He’s with Eva, so Maria’s aware that she shouldn’t be having these feelings, but she just can’t help it. They’re family as well – there’s that long history – she was married to his cousin. Coronation Street Blog interview with Shayne Ward
I was lucky enough recently to interview Shayne Ward, who plays Aidan Connor in Coronation Street.
How does Aidan feel initially after having slept with Maria?
He knows straight away that it shouldn’t have happened. The next day it’s a massive shock for Maria. I think she’s always liked Aidan. What hurt her the most was that he was telling her it was wrong and nothing should have happened. He does love Eva, but Maria and Eva are very different. He feels as if he can have a conversation with Maria, whereas he can’t with Eva. Eva is all, babe this and babe that. Eva is being really kind and caring towards Maria, so that makes him feel really bad about Eva, who is a complete innocent in this. Aidan doesn’t want to break Eva’s heart but it seems as though he will.
More than anything though, his mind set is on work – he wants to prove to his dad that he can run the business himself. He wants to be fully committed with his relationship – but his focus is on work.
Aidan totally believes Maria is innocent. Is that because you knew Caz when she was engaged to your sister Kate?
He’s aware of Caz because she was going out with his sister. She’s a bit of a bunny boiler – Aidan knows her better than a lot of people. He knows she’s up to something.
Do you think Aidan has a conscience or does he just do what he wants?
Yes, because he feels guilty from the get go. He can see how Eva is trying to help Maria and comfort her. He feels guilty in all this, because he slept with Maria and now his girlfriend and Maria are getting pally – there’s going to be a lot of awkward scenes in there. He knows Maria and trusts her not to tell Eva. She’s not going to break Eva’s heart by telling her. He does feel a lot for Maria. If she does end up going to prison, he’ll be really gutted.
And Shayne also told me about his personal life too...
I’m going to be getting the most amazing Christmas present ever – I’m expecting a baby in early December. I’m very excited, it’s the best thing ever. Everything is prepared. The nursery is done, we’re just waiting. We’re on countdown - not long to go now. Everyone is lovely. Mikey North (Gary Windass) is expecting his baby too. It’s wicked because I’m joining this Corrie family club, it’s amazing. I’m an uncle thirteen times over – that’s Irish families for you!
And his best Christmas memories?
17th December 2005 – I remember Over the Rainbow was the final song I sang (on the X-Factor) and it was a brilliant moment for me. It’s nice, because people keep uploading clips from the show itself. It’s weird, it looks dead old now. I get people approaching me who are 18 and they tell me they were seven when I won – it’s crazy. It was one of the most amazing times I ever had – I absolutely loved it on there.
And how do you enjoy being on Corrie? Is it very different from appearing on the X Factor?
It’s so different. The first time I came to do my first scene, I realised I had to look away from the camera. As a singer, you’re taught to look directly into the camera and sell yourself, so it’s really different. I like them both. Singing is a massive passion of mine and I’ll always continue singing regardless. With the acting, I like that it’s a completely different challenge. With a song, you sing it over and over again, but with a script, you do it once and it’s gone, then you have to move onto a different emotion – I love the challenge of that.

Any Christmas disasters?
I once bought a Santa’s outfit from America – I went the whole hog; it wasn’t a cheap one. I dressed up and came downstairs – I had the boots on and everything. I came downstairs and had my nephews and nieces going “It’s uncle Shayne” I was like, “No it’s not! It’s Santa!” I’m sat down on the couch with all my nieces and nephews around, then all of a sudden I got a weird reaction from the clothing. I had to take it off – I had a massive allergic reaction. I was itchy and had a rash, I was also sick!

Coronation Street episode review, Monday 28 November
On hearing that Liam is missing his mum and crying at school, Aidan hires a hotshot lawyer to take on Maria's case, much to his family's disgust. Johnny tells Aidan to drop it and Kate flounces out of the pub, taking her "manager of a second division football club" sheepskin jacket with her.
The Aadi/Asha vs Erica battles heats up a notch as the latter discovers the former hasn't been handing in his homework and insists that the twins do their schoolwork in the shop (it's unclear why Dev isn't looking after his kids). Instead of literacy or numeracy, the twins work on thievery as they nick some scratchcards and win £300, roping in Bethany to claim the loot in return for a share of the profits. Maybe Aadi needs to do a bit of maths homework, since he can't work out what his share of the spoils is.
In "dude, where's my car" news, Adam is still ribbing Daniel, who takes Ken and Eccles out for a walk/sit down on Maxine's bench, where Ken admits he wishes he'd been there for Daniel more as he was growing up. Later on, in the pub, observing Ken and his son, Mary rushes out as if she's just remembered something. Could it be a new plotline? By the way, is anyone going to tell Lawrence and James Cunningham about Ken's stroke, since the Barlows are

Frescho manager turns up as solicitor in Coronation Street
Hot shot solicitor Ben Fordham in Coronation Street tonight is played by actor Sam Barriscale.
Sam's appeared on Coronation Street before. In 2011 he played the part of Anthony for just three episodes.
Anthony was the manager of the Weatherfield branch of supermarket Freshco. In supervising a photo shoot for an advertising campaign in July 2011, he cast Dylan Wilson and Marcus Dent when Marcus's boyfriend Sean couldn't get time off work. On the photo shoot, Anthony took a shine to Marcus and when Sean skipped work and turned up, Anthony asked him to leave. Although Sean took the hint, Anthony's attitude caused Marcus to quit the shoot.
Sam has appeared on TV in Emmerdale, Eastenders, Family Affairs, Casualty, The Bill, and Holby City. He's also worked on radio soap The Archers.
Sam is on twitter at https://twitter.com/monkimanchimpYou can view his showreel here.

Mary's bombshell leaves Norris speechless in Coronation Street
Mary's got a shock secret she's going to spill soon in Coronation Street. And when Inside Soap magazine tells you that Mary's secret horrifies Norris, you know it's going to horrify us all.
But what could it be?
Well, Inside Soap tease the storyline by saying that Mary's bombshell leaves Norris speechless. We already know, in the previews already released by ITV for next week, that Mary faces a breast cancer scare.
This forces Mary to think about her own mortality and she starts work on a bucket list. In typical Mary style, the list is inside a ring binder. And it's a ring binder that Erica finds and she can't resist peeking inside. Erica tells Norris what she's found out about Mary and Norris tries to help Mary.
However, Inside Soap say that nothing can prepare Norris for what he's about to hear as Mary spills her deepest, darkest secret to him.

Roy and Cathy's wedding - more Corrie secrets revealed
Oh 'eck. In the ITV previews released already for next week's Coronation Street, we'll see Roy make a decision about his wedding to Cathy.
However, it looks as if his decision is short-lived and he changes his mind, because Roy's wedding to Cathy is back on, and Inside Soap magazine have the photos to prove it.
But with all good soap weddings, just because we have a groom (Roy), a bride (Cathy) and a best man (Alex), it doesn't mean there'll be a married couple at the of it all.
Melanie Hill who plays Cathy says she loved spending the day in make-up and wardrobe being dressed as Roy's bride in a frock.
And she reveals this about the wedding: "There's a twist viewers won't see coming. The writers have done the story proud!"
So, I wonder if there'll be a Cathy Cropper on Corrie, or not? What do you think?

Corrie's Michelle and Robert - mistletoe kiss or miss?
Ooh! Today I got my hands on the first of the two festive double issues of Inside Soap magazine.
And what a joy it is, there are Christmas spoilers galore inside. And
so, without any further ado, here we go with some teasers of storylines
in the run up to Christmas on the cobbles.
Michelle and Robert feature in the festive spoilers as the two of them become even more friendly than they already are.
With Steve having so much on his mind at the moment, he hasn't noticed that Michelle and Robert have become friends. And while things between Michelle and Robert have been platonic so far - are things set to change this festive season?
When the two of them carry out a Bistro delivery together, they enjoy a laugh and there's a moment when something seems to pass between them, says Inside Soap.
Would pregnant Michelle cheat on Steve, though? Hmm...

Nick and Peter set for a ding-dong this Christmas
Ooh! Today I got my hands on the first of the two festive double issues of Inside Soap magazine.
And what a joy it is, there are Christmas spoilers galore inside. And
so, without any further ado, here we go with some teasers of storylines
in the run up to Christmas on the cobbles.
Nick and Peter will come to blows again this Christmas, and this time over Leanne (yet again).
The festive feud of Barlow v Tilsley begins when Leanne's sister Toyah in Liverpool invites Leanne, Nick and Simon to spend Christmas with her. This makes Leanne feel guilty that Simon won't be spending Christmas with his Peter and so she offers to go Chrimbo shopping with Peter to choose Simon's present.
And, as you might guess, paranoid Nick jumps to the wrong conclusion and ends up raging, thinking there's summat going on between Leanne and Peter.

Guess who goes after Phelan in Coronation Street?
Michael's fake son plans revenge on Pat Phelan. "This is war," a Corrie insider tells Inside Soap magazine. "Andy is fixated on making Phelan pay."
When Gail and the Platt family head out to scatter Michael's ashes, they're told that the official cause of death for Michael was a heart attack. But Andy's not buying that and determines to pin the blame for Michael's death on Phelan.
Andy manages to piece together enough of what's happened to draw his own conclusions. He's just waiting for a chance to deliver his revenge on Phelan that will shock the Corrie villain to his core.

Corrie's Ben Price - "I really enjoy Woman's Hour"
Coronation Street actor Ben Price, who plays Nick Tilsley tells The Express about his five things he can’t live without.
It's an interesting little read, giving an insight into the actor's private life. Ben says he enjoys travel to Morocco, running, writing and says he's a team player.
And as he lives in Bath and travels to and from work in Manchester by car, he likes to listen to the radio en route.
He says: "Filming for Coronation Street in Manchester and living in Bath means I spend a fair bit of time in the car as it’s a three-and-ahalf-hour drive between Granada Studios and my home. Not that I mind though, as I enjoy having time just driving by myself. In fact, as long as the traffic isn’t too bad it is actually a pleasure as I tune in to Radio 4 and catch up with the week’s current events.
My favourite programme is the Moral Maze as it really digs deeply into complex ethical questions and often covers issues that I haven’t thought about before.
I also really enjoy Woman’s Hour as it tells the personal stories behind the headlines. For a bit of light relief, I will sometimes flick over to Radio 1Xtra.
Ben Price is a celebrity ambassador for UK development charity CAFOD and is promoting their Christmas World Gifts range. Visit worldgifts.cafod.org.uk for more details.

ZEEDAN DROPS A BOMBSHELL ON RANA When Rana’s parents arrive for a family meal, Rana squirms as they inform Yasmeen and Zeedan of the string of unsuitable men in her past. Zeedan’s glad to escape to the Bistro when Leanne calls, confiding in her that he’s worried that he and Rana are rushing into marriage, as there’s so much he doesn’t know about her. Meanwhile Zeedan’s dismayed to learn that Yasmeen’s pawned her wedding ring and other family heirlooms to pay towards the wedding. Rana tackles Zeedan about his distant mood but she’s floored when he announces that he can’t marry her as watching his grandparents’ marriage fall apart has made him question their own relationship.
AIDAN HAS AN IDEA HOW TO HELP MARIA When Kirk tells Aidan that Liam is missing his mummy, Aidan resolves to do what he can to help speed up Maria’s release. He meets up with Ben, a hotshot solicitor and asks him to take on Maria’s case but in doing so is Aidan dangerously putting his business and family on the line for Maria?
WILL ERICA CATCH AADI AND ASHA RED HANDED? Having found a letter from school about Aadi’s repeated failure to hand in his homework, Erica insists they’ll do their homework in the shop in future where she can keep an eye on them. As the twins set about their school work, they steal some scratch cards. When a thrilled Aadi reveals he’s won £300 they form a plan to collect their winnings without exposing their scam. On the understanding they’ll split the winnings three ways, Asha and Aadi cajole Bethany into presenting the winning scratch card to Erica. Will they be rumbled?
ELSEWHERE Daniel joins Ken on his walk with Eccles. Ken apologises to Daniel for not spending more time with him when he was growing up meanwhile someone watches on as the pair enjoy a drink together.

Maria Connor locked up in prison - for a year?
Tabloid tales this week suggest that Maria will get locked up at Christmas - and spend a year in jail.
But rumours are rife that Maria will miss out on the Christmas party in the Rovers as she's being grilled by the feds (as Kirk would say). Not only that, but the tabloids reckon Maria will be jailed for a year. A year? Does this mean that Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria, is taking a break from the show?
Mr Curry Sauce tells The Sun: “Maria will be handed a 12-month stretch but she’ll be back on the cobbles in the new year because of good behaviour."
The tabloid also say that the storyline will see Samia be involved in less shooting than regular actors – but that she will still appear in prison scenes.
However, the rumour has neither been confirmed nor denied by ITV, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

Coronation Street stars Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe), Dolly-Rose Campbell (Gemma Winter), Daniel Brocklebank (Billy Mayhew) and Rob Mallard (Daniel Osbourne) switched on the Christmas lights at New York New York bar in Manchester
The event helped to raise £3,000 for the Breast Cancer Prevention charity, a cause backed by Sally after her own battle with cancer.
