Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 30 April

Evening Corrie fans, it’s Kelly here with your Friday night review.

Peter’s back in Wethie General waiting for his liver transplant. He’s been in that hospital bed so many times this year I’m surprised he doesn’t get a blue plaque. Back on the street, Sharon has somehow found out about his transplant and uses the knowledge to continue her unsubtle grooming of Sam. She tells him he should message Nick so that he can let Simon know about his dad. Her plan works, Simon overhears Nick telling Leanne about the transplant and does a runner from the safe house. I’m sure it wasn’t just me who thought the safe house looked remarkably like their old flat in Victoria Court. When Leanne and Nick said they said they were ‘going into hiding’ did they actually meaning moving down one floor?

Pleased with how her plan has worked out Sharon visits Harvey in prison, but as she leaves she bumps into a very suspicious Jenny. She makes up a lie about mentoring one of the prisoners but there’s no fooling our favourite landlady who vows to find out what she’s up to.

When Leanne finds out Simon’s gone, she goes immediately into her patented Battersby strop, telling Nick he’s put them all in danger and that Simon is probably being tortured as they speak. Actually he’s sat at Peter’s hospital bed moaning that being in hiding is boring. Unbeknownst to Peter and Simon one of the cleaners is working for Harvey and makes a covert phone call to let someone know where to find Simon. Nice work Si, you’ve risked your whole family’s safety because you can’t get Netflix in in your safe house!

Meanwhile Todd bleats to Eileen that George has unfairly sacked him from the undertakers. She goes marching round to George's but finds that Todd was actually sacked for being money-grabbing and having no moral compass. Amazingly she still manages to wangle him a weeks notice with pay. Left on his own, Todd deals sensitively with an old school friend who has lost his son. Impressed George offers him his job back.

In other news, Kev and Abi tell Tyrone he can’t bring Alina to the wedding which leads to him resigning as Best Man and Kelly flirts with Corey the creep telling him that she used to fancy him when he was a bad boy but now he's with Asha he’s Mr Boring.

Back at the hospital Peter is told the liver isn’t viable so he won’t be getting a transplant after all. As he gets ready to leave he hears the hears the dodgy cleaner on the phone and twigs that he’s working for Harvey. He shouts at Simon to run. As Si legs it, the cleaner punches Peter in the stomach. Simon gets away but Peter is taken for a scan and then told by a pretty judgmental doctor that getting into fights could go against him getting another transplant. Seems a bit unfair.

Simon returns to Nick and Leanne and tells him he was almost caught. They all dump their sim cards, but have they done enough to keep themselves safe?

And that's all for this week. If you have a candidate in mind for Peter's liver donor let me know in the comments or on twitter @mskelstar. I'm hoping for either Harvey or Corey...no anaesthetic needed for either of them, just whip it out!

Friday 30th April 2021

SIMON BREAKS COVER FOR HIS DAD In their hideout, Nick admits that Sam’s been in touch to let them know that Peter’s having a liver transplant. Simon listening from the door. Leanne knocks on Simon’s bedroom door but to her horror she discovers he’s gone. Simon arrives at the hospital, shocking Peter and Carla.

SHARON USES PETER’S OPERATION TO HER ADVANTAGE Sharon tells Sam that Simon’s Dad has gone into hospital for a liver transplant and he ought to message Nick so that he can let Simon know.

TODD IS OUT TO GET HIS JOB BACK When Todd reveals that George sacked him, Eileen vows to have it out with him. However when George reveals how Todd was ripping off vulnerable customers, Eileen’s rage turns to embarrassment. Eileen tells Todd that George has agreed that he can work his week’s notice. Todd returns to the undertakers where George lays down the law, explaining that they have the body of a young boy in the chapel of rest and he’d better show some respect.

ELSEWHERE When Asha suggests they get a couple of cats so they can be a proper family, it’s clear Corey doesn’t share her enthusiasm. When Abi reveals that Tyrone’s intending to bring Alina to their wedding, Sally’s horrified.

Friday 30th April 2021

PETER STEPS INTO SAVE HIS SON Simon announces he’s not going back to the hideout meanwhile Leanne worries that Harvey’s mob has got Simon. Peter and Carla persuade Simon but as he makes to leave, Peter overhears the cleaner on his phone, reporting Simon’s whereabouts. The cleaner punches Peter. Simon legs it. Simon returns to the hideout and admits how he nearly got caught. The transplant coordinator explains to Peter and Carla that as a result of his head injury, they’re going to keep him in for a couple of nights. Peter pulls out a crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and stares at the address on it.

JENNY BEGINS TO SMELL A RAT Sharon lies to Jenny, making out she's mentoring one of the prisoners. Sharon takes a call and is furious to hear that Simon’s done a runner.

TODD HAS A REVELATION Todd is reminded of his own son when Stuart, an old mate from his past, revealed that the young boy in the chapel of rest is his son. George is sympathetic and offers Todd his job back. George and Todd go for a pint and agree that from now on, they’re not only colleagues, but mates too.

ELSEWHERE When Kelly accuses Corey of turning into Mr Boring, Corey reckons she’s jealous, but it’s clear they’re enjoying the banter. Having realised that Alina’s not welcome at the wedding, Tyrone takes umbrage and tells Kevin and Abi they can stuff their wedding and he’s resigning from Best Man.

Todd Grimshaw and his shenanigans

In my book, at the moment, Todd Grimshaw is the best thing about Coronation Street. If ever there was an enjoyable villain, Todd is the one. Admittedly, it took a while after his initial arrival and a strange, ‘didn’t quite work’ storyline about some weirdly unconvincing gangsters, for him to find his feet. Now though, he is fully integrated into the street. He has his mum. Eileen is fully aware of her son’s faults, but he is her son so she will always stand by him.  He did have his job until the sacking last night. Might Eileen be able to fix that? And finally, and most importantly, he has Billy back. After all his manoeuvrings, machinations and manipulations he has succeeded in his objective – to restart his relationship with Billy.

We knew from early on in his return that his target was Billy, but there was one major problem, namely, Paul, Billy’s live-in boyfriend. However, to Todd, yes, of course it was an obstruction, but one that he could deal with and deal with it he did. And what’s more, we were able to witness every detail of Todd’s plan. How fascinating it was too, as he worked his way back into Billy’s affections. That is not to say that Todd’s methods were in any way worthy of praise.

In actual fact, they were downright dodgy. It pains me to say it, but Todd’s moral compass is defunct. In his efforts to secure his way back into Billy’s affections he had to remove Paul. One ruse of Todd’s was to employ teenager Will. Will succeeded in manipulating Paul’s emotions. Paul, soft-hearted and desperate to help a person with an allegedly violent step-dad, (this last bit being untrue) Paul crossed the line and defied the rule of the charity for which he was working. Paul met up with Will, annoying Billy who had warned him against such an unwise act.

Gradually, Billy and Paul’s relationship was worn down. Their unsuitability was highlighted by Paul’s behaviour and his jealousy of Todd. It transpired too that Billy was still in love with Todd and that he had been kidding himself. So, Billy and Todd are back together and who didn’t have just a momentary feeling of pathos for Paul as he looked up to the window of his former home, just as Todd was drawing the curtains for an evening in the company of Todd and Summer. However, bad deeds cannot go unpunished and a chill wind will surely be blowing Todd’s way before too long.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 28th April 7.30 & 8.30 pm

Sharon’s super-sleuthing and secret snooping for Harvey mean that Nick’s son Sam is now firmly in her sights. Tonight, and using her past friendship with Gail as a key to N0.8, Sharon manages to get involved with helping Sarah arrange a birthday tea for Sam. With David and Shona busy, Gail and Natasha also are absent, so Sharon spots an opportunity. Sarah is soon distracted by a text message and heads out, so super manipulator Sharon takes charge of proceedings.

Questioning the youngster about Nick’s whereabouts, Sharon pricks Sam’s conscience and he secretly calls his Dad. Safe in his undisclosed bolt-hole, Nick answers the phone and reassures his son that all is fine. Supposedly out of earshot, Sharon overhears the whole conversation and uses the youngster's naivety to her advantage. Sharon is now armed with plenty of ammo, but is Sam about to be caught in the crossfire? Later, Sarah tells Adam she thought the text was from Nick so went to meet him, only for nobody to turn up. Back home, she responds to another text or call, and it’s clear that Sharon is behind the hoaxing. Later, Sharon takes a call from Harvey and she pleads with him to not harm Sam!

Corey’s coerciveness hasn't taken long to reappear and kind of echoes Geoff’s goading of Yasmeen, albeit a retelling via the Corrie kids. With Asha in the Yasmeen role, tonight she has a chat with the best pal - Nina replacing Cathy as a voice of reason. Ironically, Dev chats with Yasmeen in the shop, and she gives Asha’s Dad some friendly advice, telling Dev that she has also spotted Corey’s familiar behavioural trait, but when will Asha? After a visit to their new flat, Dev seems reassured of his daughter’s safety, which Adi pours scorn on. Later, and after a visit from her friends Mary, and Kelly,  Asha tells Corey how happy she is. For how long though?

Peter and Carla are settling into married life at N0.1. The newlyweds haven't had a honeymoon for obvious reasons, and Steve is still keen on assisting Peter’s rehabilitation with some jigsaw therapy. Feeling amorous, Carla has a different kind of jiggy in mind, and models some victorian underwear for our transplantee! Later, it looks like Steve may need a transplant himself, after he walks into the living room, and catches the couple in the throes of a compromising position! I genuinely thought Steve was going to have a heart attack then! Rather than shocking Steve to death, Carla decides to move them into the streetcars flat. Later, Peter receives another new lifeline in the shape of a donated liver!

Todd’s reorganisation of Shuttleworth’s business books begins in earnest. As a qualified solicitor, I do wonder about Todd’s career trajectory, but sales do appeal to that slippery demeanour he holds so well. It isn't long before a disgruntled customer turns up though, claiming to be ripped off. George takes a hit in the pocket and fires Todd.

Elsewhere in tonight’s episodes;  Audrey has twisted her ankle for about the 1000th time! Tyrone and Tim bicker over the arrangements for Kevin’s stag party. Kev soon makes peace with Tyrone but Abi is fuming when he invites Alina to the ceremony.
