Pic: Corrie fan proposes outside Rovers Return

There was a marriage proposal on the old Coronation Street set this week when Scott Bladen asked his girlfriend Zoe Swift to marry him. And the lady, she said 'yes'!

When Zoe accepted Scott's proposal on the Coronation Street tour, onlookers cheered the happy couple on from the cobbles. Scott and Zoe are both huge Coronation Street fans.

Scott told the Liverpool Echo: “I was really nervous, shaking and sweating. Zoe’s a massive Corrie fan, we both watch it together and we had booked to go onto the tour. I thought it would be a good idea to propose while we were there and, with the Rovers being such a central point, to do it there. Luckily it went really well, she said yes and she was over the moon. I’d booked a limo to take us back from the set to a pub in Neston, the Malt Shovel, where our family and friends were waiting, so I was really glad she said yes!”

Many congratulations to the happy couple!

I can't think of anywhere better to be proposed to than on the Coronation Street set.

Preview of tonight's double Corrie - Friday 31 July

Friday 31st July
ROY AND CATHY ARE THE PICTURE OF FRIENDSHIP Roy persuades a reluctant Cathy to have a day out with him whilst Tyrone, Fiz and Chesney kindly clear some junk out of her house. At Cathy’s request, they visit an art gallery. Roy’s impressed with her knowledge and it’s clear they’ve both enjoyed themselves. Tyrone, Fiz and Chesney work hard clearing out Cathy’s junk. But when Roy and Cathy return home and they reveal the fruits of their labour, how will Cathy react?
MUM’S THE WORD FOR ALYA Yasmeen’s excited at the thought of planning the wedding, guilt-ridden Alya does her best to appear enthusiastic. Plucking up the courage, Alya heads to the Underworld loos with her pregnancy testing kit. But when Beth finds the pregnancy testing kit in the bin, she and Sean wonder who it belongs to. Sinead glances at Alya, aware there’s something bothering her, but keeps her counsel. As Gary arrives in the factory to collect Alya, Beth produces the pregnancy testing kit and teases Alya by suggesting it’s hers. Alya’s alarmed whilst Gary’s bemused.
AUDREY ATTEMPTS TO BUILD BRIDGES Audrey summons Gail, Sarah and Bethany to the Salon for a pampering session, hoping they can iron out their differences. Can she unite the family once more? ELSEWHERE When a stroppy customer calls in the cab office and drops her bracelet, Eileen pockets it and Michael’s perturbed by her dishonesty.

Friday 31st July
ROY RUES HIS ACTIONS As Roy calms Cathy down, Tyrone shows her how they’ve boxed up all her junk and labelled it so she can decide what to dump and what to keep. Cathy’s touched, revealing how after Alan’s death, hoarding junk gave her comfort. Telling her to call if she needs him, Roy heads home. Clearly in a state, Cathy arrives at the café and admits to Roy that she’s scared that the longer she stays in the house, the worse she’ll become. Sympathetic, Roy makes Cathy an offer.
ALYA CONFESSES THE TRUTH TO SINEAD Sinead comes to Alya’s rescue, making out the pregnancy test was hers and it was negative. Will Gary accept this? Alya feels terrible and as she and Gary meet with Yasmeen, Sharif, and Anna to discuss wedding plans, the stress becomes too much for Alya and she heads out for some air. Sinead finds Alya in tears on the street. Alya breaks down and swearing Sinead to secrecy, confesses how she had sex with Jason. Catching up with Alya, is Gary about to discover the awful truth?
KYLIE RETURNS WITH NEWS OF DAVID Kylie arrives home with Max and Lily and explains to Gail that David is spending a few days alone with his Dad as Max’s continual references to Callum were getting him down. Sarah feels guilty.
ELSEWHERE Under pressure from Michael, Eileen begrudgingly agrees that if the customer returns looking for her bracelet, she’ll hand it over. Finding sulky Bethany alone at the bus stop, Sarah cancels her date with Callum and persuades Bethany to join her at the chippy.

Craig Charles has filmed his final Corrie scenes

Craig Charles, who plays Lloyd Mullaney on Coronation Street, has filmed his final scenes.  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Lloyd has left the building - and the show.

However, I wonder if he will be returning for the live episode in September.  Hayley Tamaddon, who plays Lloyd's girlfriend Andrea, revealed in an interview with Radio Times earlier this year that  Andrea will leave the show with Lloyd during September’s live episode. 

I'll miss Craig Charles a lot on the show as I rate him highly as an actor and Lloyd's a great character too. 

Craig is leaving to record a new series of Red Dwarf as well as taking his trunk of funk on the road with the Funk and Soul Roadshow, and continuing his Radio 6 funk and soul show, which I love.

Last time Craig left the show for a break in December 2011, Streetcars gave Lloyd a 10-horn salute as the cabs beeped their horns on his exit, as it were.

Let's hope we'll see Craig again on Coronation Street.

Sarah Harding won't be returning to Corrie

Sarah Harding, who appeared as Joni Preston on Coronation Street last week, will not be returning to the show, says The Sun today.

Mr Curry Sauce told The Sun: “It’s safe to say Sarah’s Corrie career hasn’t gone as planned. Fans and critics have been pretty unimpressed with her acting. It doesn’t reflect well on Corrie, who have been accused of chasing ratings with gimmicks. They will not be getting her back and the general consensus on set is that this was a failed experiment.”

However, although she was only signed up for four episodes it was later reported that Sarah Harding apparently "wowed show bosses".  And she said she's been asked back to film more episodes later this year.  So perhaps this is the return that's been axed?

A Coronation Street spokesperson confirmed to The Sun: "Sarah was cast for four episodes in a cameo role for a specific storyline. There are no immediate plans for the character of Joni to return.”

Sarah also admitted that she was never auditioned for her role on the show.  "The producers YouTubed me."

I have one word in response to this news item: Phew.

Tyrone, Kirk & Chesney’s charity golf takes place today

Tyrone, Kirk &Chesney’s Charity Golf Day and Dinner takes place today, 30th July 2015. 

The Coronation Street actors Alan Halsall, Andy Whyment and Sam Aston will be putting off at the Marriott Worsley Park in Manchester today. Anyone who has sponsored a hole on the pitch can decorate it how they wish and there are some corkers. One of the sponsors has placed a plastic pub on one of the holes!

Coronation Street episode review, Weds 29 July

A warm, dry welcome to this Wednesday review to escape the very wet weather you'll have been experiencing if you're up here in the North.

What started as a 'bridge' episode quickly turned otherwise, as the bridge collapsed.  Fiz, Tyrone, Roy and Cathy have organised a NOT double date. Assumptions that Cathy and Roy are now an item causes Roy to feel very perturbed, most likely because of Hayley.  I'm sure that we are all agreed that if Hayley could see him now, she'd be cheering him on with Cathy. She's probably writing her blessing in bright red lipstick on the big window in the sky. Cathy insists on making her 'Toffana Pie'-  her take on banoffee pie. Flustered because of the assumptions, Roy sharply sends Cathy away, claiming he is too busy to talk.

Roy: "I'll be doing a mango sorbet"
Cathy: "I'm not so keen on sorbet. I've always thought it's a bit of a con. It looks like ice-cream, feels a bit like ice-cream.
Tastes like toothpaste. Though...I'm sure yours is lovely..."

As Cathy readies herself for the dinner party, she spots a book she thinks Roy would like. Of course, it is wedged under a mountain of junk. As she pulls on it, an avalanche of items topples over. This is where the 'bridge' collapses. Over at the dinner party, the mechanic, the knicker-maker and Roy grow concerned as Cathy is now 45 minutes late. Thinking he had upset her earlier, Roy visits Cathy (it's a good thing he passed his driving test last week). He has to shout through the letterbox as the door is locked and Cathy can't move. She has been engulfed by years of treasured possessions (clutter). But it's not all bad. Cathy has been helping herself to some of the Toffana Pie which has fallen next to her.

The hero of the hour breaks the door down with a fire extinguisher he keeps in his car and rescues the woman who he is NOT dating. This is a very interesting storyline; rather comic on the outside but the further it goes, the more serious it becomes and I think tonight's episode was a catalyst for the storyline.

Cathy: "I'm not on fire"
Roy: "Oh no, I used this to get in the door. I keep it in the Woody.
Though not yet mandatory in private vehicles in the UK, in many European vehicles they are"

Eileen and Michael came down the stairs together this morning. In terms of soap cliches, everyone knows what that means. Michael is wearing a dressing gown which Gail bought him, which Eileen is secretly smirking at. She goes to make him a 'well earned' fry-no- grill-up. Later on, in the pub, Eileen can't resist rubbing salt in Gail's wounds. She stands at the bar, smiling at Gail in a patronising manner and draping her arms around her new man, Unfortunately, Michael doesn't see the funny side and leaves. I am absolutely loving this storyline. I'd be more than happy to see a Gail vs Eileen spin-off!

Michael: "Don't upset her unnecessarily"
Eileen: "Upsetting Gail has been my life's work. I've gotta get my pleasure somewhere"

Over at the factory, Sally and Alya are preparing for an important meeting. But something is troubling Alya. The smug-needs-a-slap-Sally patronises her colleague about facts and figures and falls all over the potential client, whilst Alya has to make a quick exit, looking sickly. Sally puts this down to a dodgy hotpot. Later on, a nervous Alya sits in a cubicle at the Rovers loos after yet another scornful lecture from Sally and unwraps a pregnancy test. But she can't do it. This is also an intriguing storyline and will certainly bring lots of questions.

Alya: "I was ill"
Sally: "Yeah, well, don't bother going to see a doctor. I diagnose a severe case of being out of your depth"

Elsewhere, Callum dispels Bethany's claims to Sarah that he is potentially cheating. I know Bethany is controversial, but I like her. She's feisty and devious.  I just hope her character is reformed or redeemed somehow and she matures. I am impressed with Lucy Fallon as Bethany recently.

Ken calls at the Rovers, telling Liz about how he is sorting out Deirdre's things. He has decided that she should have a piece of jewellery which Deirdre loved and inherited from Blanche. Just after, Tony turns up again, saying that he will sell his half of the pub back to Steve. Liz is far less than thrilled than this idea and Tony leaves, his offer in the air.

Ken: "Your friendship was everything to Deirdre"
Liz: "Well thank you, I will treasure this"

In most places, this episode was a 'bridge' episode but was largely entertaining in places. The highlight for me was, of course, the Gail/Eileen scene in the pub.

Guerilla knitters hit the Coronation Street set

The old Coronation Street set is being covered in knitted items thanks to members of the In Stitches knitting circle at the University of Manchester.

The MEN reports that guerilla knitters are decorating the street with knitted items including bees, trailing flowers and hanging baskets.  The group have been invited to ‘yarn bomb’ the old Quay Street set to bring some eye-catching new additions to the final few months of the Coronation Street tour which closes in December.

Charlie Hooson-Sykes, a 36-year-old executive assistant at the university, is the founder member of the group which began in 2011.

She said: “I wanted to meet other people who knitted and enjoyed crochet. With this project we are covering a post box and creating hanging baskets and randomly covering other things on the street.”

The art of yarn bombing, also known as guerilla knitting, is a type of graffiti or street art that uses colourful displays of knitting instead of paint or chalk.

Dr Gillian Sinclair, who works in computer science at the university, said: “I’ve always watched Coronation Street. My mum brought me up on it. I wasn’t even allowed to rustle a paper when we watched it. I haven’t told her yet that I’m working on it.”

Cathy Matthews - what's she up to with Roy?

What do you think of Cathy Matthews so far?  The reason I'm asking is that I think there's a lot more going on with Cathy than we first thought.

When it was announced that Roy was going to get a new lady friend, I breathed a sigh of relief that the official press release said that Cathy wasn't being brought in as Roy's girlfriend. She's been a friend to Roy, they've bonded at the allotment and now she's spending time with him as his friend on the Street.

We know she's got problems, what with the hoarding and all, and in her way she's a lot like Roy too.  In a way, it's reassuring that Cathy is almost as socially awkward as Roy is, if not more so.  But will their friendship turn into something more, I wonder, and I have to admit, I think it might not.

And I'm not sure if I want it to. This isn't out of some sense of loyalty to Hayley, although I have that in spades, but it's because I don't trust Cathy and I think she's playing Roy - slowly and subtly. For what, I'm not sure. But there's something about Cathy that makes me wonder what she's up to with our Roy.

Paparazzi pictures released recently show Roy and Cathy enjoying a day by the seaside at Blackpool. They look happy together, eating ice-cream and having a paddle in the shallows. Why Blackpool, though?  Would Roy really take Cathy to his special place that holds so many memories of Hayley for him? I wonder if Blackpool is a special place for Cathy; perhaps it's where her husband and she used to go and it holds special memories for her too?

Cathy's a complicated character, more so than I first thought, and Melanie Hill is playing her superbly. Roy seems to be becoming rather irritated by Cathy of late, and I wonder if he'll try to pull away from her soon?

I'm intrigued to see where Roy and Cathy's friendship goes next, if indeed, it goes anywhere at all.

Preview of tonight's Coronation Street - Weds 29 July

Wednesday 29th July
PROBLEMS PILE ON FOR CATHY When Cathy calls in the café and offers to make the desert for the curry night, Roy’s curt with her and Cathy leaves chastened. At home Cathy has a fright when a pile of boxes suddenly come tumbling down upon her. Cathy lies trapped and unconscious. When Cathy fails to turn up for the curry evening, Roy’s concerned and sets off to Cathy’s house to find out what’s happened. Realising she’s trapped, Roy breaks the door down and rescues her from the pile of debris. Pointing out that her house is a potential death trap, Roy vows to do something about it.
ALYA FACES AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE As Alya prepares for a business meeting, she’s suddenly overcome with nausea and scuttles off to the loo leaving Sally to deal with the client. In the Rovers loos, Alya toys with a pregnancy testing kit but loses her nerve and shoves it back in her bag.
SARAH CONFRONTS CALLUM In front of Callum, Sarah confronts Bethany demanding to know why she said Callum eyes up other women. Bethany squirms with humiliation. After the showdown with Sarah, Bethany’s clearly scared of Callum’s reaction. Apologising to Callum she assures him from now on she’ll do anything he wants. Has Callum got Bethany right where he wants her?
ELSEWHERE Eileen and Michael are loved up after spending the night together. Eileen enjoys rubbing Gail’s nose in it but Michael’s unimpressed by her childish behaviour.

Coronation Street theme tune in top 20 funeral songs

A poll this week  shows that the Coronation Street theme tune has not lost its appeal as one of the most popular funeral tunes.

The poll by Gigwise this week reveals that the Corrie theme tune comes in at No 17 of the most popular funeral songs.

The top 5 are as follows: 5) Frank Sinatra's My Way, 4) Match of the Day theme tune, 3) Abide with Me, 2) The Lord is my Shepherd and the top one is Eric Idle singing Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

Inside Soap Award nominees reveal Corrie secrets

This week's Inside Soap magazine has an exclusive photo shoot of some of the Coronation Street cast members nominated in the Inside Soap Awards. And what a good photo shoot it is.

All dolled up in their best bib and tucker are Sally Ann Matthew (Jenny Bradley), Colson Smith (Craig Tinker), Ellie Leach (Faye Windass), Jack P Shepherd (David Platt), Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt) and Sean Ward (Callum Logan).

As well as the pictures of them all glammed up, there's a few snippets from behind the scenes from each of them too.

Sean Ward (Callum) is nominated for Best Bad Boy and Sexiest Male. He says that in real life: "People are always asking me for drugs! Even if I'm just in the supermarket with my mum, it's terrible."  Sean admits he doesn't drive so he has a driving double on the Corrie set, and says he'd love to do a scene with Barbara Knox, who plays Rita.  I'd love to see that too, she'd scare the living daylights out of Callum.

Lucy Fallon (Bethany) is nominated for Best Newcomer and she's one I have voted for. I love her and think she's ace.  Lucy says she'd love to have some scenes with Kate Ford as Tracy Barlow. "I think there would be fireworks if they crossed each other," she says. I can see Bethany joining Team-Evil at Barlow's Buys with toxic Todd and terrible Tracy.

Jack P Shepherd (David) is nominated for Best Actor. He says he loves acting with Les Dennis (Michael Rodwell). "It's hilarious doing scenes when he's in them because he's always corpsing and then he just laughs in your face."  When asked if the cast like to play pranks on each other, Jack says "Of course! Colson Smith (Craig) is the biggest target at the minute.  He's only just started coming into the green room so he's fresh meat.  It's him and Ches (aka actor Sam Aston) - everyone calls him Chesney, no one calls him Sam!"

Ellie Leach (Faye) and Colson Smith (Craig) say they're great friends off-screen as well as on-screen.  Colson and Ellie have both been nominated for Best Young Actor although Colson says he should have been nominated for Sexiest Male.  It was a hard decision for me to know which one of these two to vote for in this category, they have been both excellent. Colson admitted there could be romance on the cards for Craig coming up!

Sally Ann Matthews (Jenny) is nominated for Best Bad Girl. She talks about Jenny's wig having its own twitter account and admits she didn't keep it as it was a really nasty, cheap wig.  She says she would give an award to Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop) in Corrie as she is the ultimate professional on the show and she has a wicked sense of humour.

What are your first memories of Coronation Street?

What are some of your first memories of watching Coronation Street?

I've been watching the show since before I can remember. Corrie was always part of our house, it was always on. I used to watch it with my mam and my grandma as my mam tutted at Elsie Tanner's antics and grandma and I relished in Elsie's naughtiness.

I can't recall any exact first moments or storylines, and the point at which I turned into a regular watcher is lost in the mists of time.

However, I must have tuned in properly around 1974, at the age of 10 years old. 1974 was the year that the women went to Majorca when Bet won on Spot the Ball, a storyline I remember, and love.   I also remember scenes of Elsie Tanner rinsing her stockings out in the kitchen sink, smoking, applying make-up and crying it off again.

Coronation Street scriptwriter hosts writing workshop

Coronation Street scriptwriter Ben Tagoe is hosting a writing workshop this Saturday 1 August, in Manchester

Ben writes:
"I'm going to be running a scriptwriting workshop in Manchester on Saturday 1st August 2015. The event will be raising funds for a good friend of mine who has been living with breast cancer for a few years now. It's a 90-minute 'pay-what-you-can' session. I'm suggesting a contribution of £20 for attendees, but you genuinely can pay whatever you can afford. If you want to contribute more, that's great. If you've only got a spare quid then that's also fine. There's a link for donating below.

I'll provide more details about the topics covered, but they will include story structure, creating compelling characters, the process of taking ideas from script to screen along with career advice for writers in film, TV and theatre. The good people at The Bowling Green pub in Chortlon have offered the use of their premises for free. I'll be hanging around after the session for a drink, a bite to eat and to continue the conversation. Be great if as many people as possible could also do the same to thank them for their support.

All funds generated will go towards helping Kath explore alternative treatment options that aren't available to her on the NHS. They will also occasionally help Kath to have a bit of time out for travel or a holiday as her treatment can be exhausting and very difficult at times.

Carla's gambling secrets spill out on Coronation Street

When Carla left Coronation Street the other week she told Roy she was off to Madrid.  I can't say I blame her. I've been to Madrid and it was an eye-opener, let me tell you.

But when Carla returns to Weatherfield next week she admits to Michelle that she never went to Madrid. She went mad in Las Vegas instead, and gambled away loads of her cash.

Back on the Street, Carla continues gambling at Weatherfield's finest casino where Nick catches her at it.

Can Nick save her savings or is Carla too far into her addiction to be brought back from the brink?

And just when - WHEN - will the truth come out about Tracy and the candle and the fire?

Platt storyline takes a turn to the dark side

Comedy Callum and his Power Rangers pyjamas are set to get scary in Coronation Street.

Next week on our favourite show Max will find a gun in Callum's flat and Callum starts threatening Sarah. 

For such a supposedly scary villain, it's funny how Callum picks on the girls, isn't it?  Someone called Callum a 'big girl's blouse' the other week online, which made me chuckle. That's just what he is. He's the campest Corrie villain that the show has ever had.

Callum turns on Sarah after he shows her the photos of Bethany acting as his drugs delivery girl.
