Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 8 November 2024

Welcome.  Sometimes we all accept that the Street goes off the main thoroughfare and such diversions are not to everyone's taste.  So it is tonight and we end with everyone reconciled over the loss of Paul and knowing that he is now in a better place, even if the journey has been somewhat tortuous from Billy and a bottle, Bernie dumping Dev and taking him back, hypothermia to finally end with Bernie referring to her four children (Apollo, Gemini, Kit and Billy plus the quad squad), standing hand in hand with Billy as it rains - bringing just a little of Paul back to earth.

Bethany has changed her mind and has returned to Daniel's flat where she decides that with her bump all the clothes have to go and she can only wear hoodies and baggy jumpers.  However she jumps back when they try to make up and assures Daniel she is ready - only she isn't.  He re-assures her that if the stoma is keeping her alive then he loves it.  Later Daniel asks Daisy to store some of the clothes as he knows Bethany will regret dumping them at some future point.

David is taking steps to ensure that attempts by Clayton to contact Shona are failing, deleting emails and ignoring phone calls from the prison.  Almost certainly the steps will fail.  Come morning Shona receives an email - head lice at Lily's school again.

Tim has taken pity on Mason and moves him onto the sofa and lets him get a shower.  Mason's disreputable brothers turn up, spotting him emerging from Sal's and know he is onto a good thing.  Some time later Sal and Tim return from the cafe to find the car has been twoc'd and Tim admits Sal's mother's engagement ring was in the car plus the car keys have gone from inside the house and Tim immediately believes that Mason is the one to blame as there is no sign of a forced entry.

Dee Dee admits to Eddie that she borrowed Ronnie's crowbar and she found Joel with a suitcase (on up to DS Swain) and then hit Joel once, killing him.  Dee Dee then rang Kit (using a disguised voice) telling him where to find the body - but as we know Joel was most definitely alive when Kit arrived but luckily his car's attendance has been removed from the police records.  Ed points out that Joel was found elsewhere so still must have been alive.

In the round I think we have said all our farewells to Paul.  And finding Joel's "killer" made no real progress.  Bethany is learning to live with a bump.  And I reckon Mason left the front door open when he left and he is not responsible for the missing car.  No doubt we will find out much more next week and I believe I will be able to reveal all next Friday.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 4 October 2024

Good evening.  Tonight is dominated by a rave outside the gates of the closed Nuttall's brewery where initially Ryan and subsequently another DJ (Chris) play catchy little beats for the residents to celebrate Paul's life.  Billy starts the day with a mahoosive hangover.  Bernie has already collected the ashes before Billy gets to the undertakers setting the day off to a worse start for Billy who is having to deal with Paul not hearing his final message as revealed by Bernie.  Formal permission for the road closure has not arrived but Kit is helping man the barriers and will flash his card if there are any queries.  Daniel wants Vera's and salmon and trout - no idea is Dev's response and nor have I.  Paul's ashes have pride of place adjacent to the decks - Bernie has split them and hands a box to Billy as the rest will be sent into space.  Billy starts shouting at Bernie who tries to explain but she soon shouts back.

Andy Garland was in jail with David and Paul so turns up at the rave to announce he has gone straight.  They recall "Minty" as he always had a packet and the freshest breath in the prison.  Bernie and Billy both fume separately on opposite sides of the Street.  Billy makes up his mind and dashes through the ravers, grabs the urn and returns to his flat, where he holds the urn tightly.

Gail reappears to announce the Platts will be homeless as she is selling the gaff and putting them on the Street.  It is the only way to meet the Turkish hospital costs.  Ken tries to talk Daniel out of using Bertie's Trust Fund.  Daniel asks Adam's advice who reveals that Damon has offered to pay with the  money stolen in the armed robbery - which Daniel says Sarah must reject and that Sarah should not be told about it.  Adam pops along to the jail to see Damon.  Damon says they have both lost Sarah - but he can supply the money Bethany needs (and by the way he still loves Sarah).   Adam tells Daniel who tells Adam that he will do anything rather than use Damon's money.  Daniel also forces Adam to delete the voicemail - but honestly I am not convinced that he did so.  Gail is going to get a bridging loan until the house is sold.  David is booking a homeless shelter for his Christmas lunch.

Even Ken gets in a quick rave.  And then Bernie spots the missing urn.

Carla is tetchy and it gets worse when she opens a mystery brown envelope which Ryan delivers.  Ryan thinks it is about the ABH charge and likely community service sentence.  Ryan later reads the content of the envelope and finds it is the decree absolute for Carla's divorce from Peter.  And whilst Carla knew it was coming, so is death, but when it happens it is a shock.

Kirk is setting up a "Singles to Mingle" group - but fails to tempt DS Swain (whose right arm mysteriously rarely moves) to join him and Ryan.  I am worried about Kirk - he gets "Sleeping with the Enemy" {Julia Roberts} confused with "Sleepless in Seattle" {Meg Ryan} - it is enough to keep me awake at night.

Fiz and Tyrone initially tell Hope and Ruby that there is no baby and that it was a false alarm.  Hope consults Sam who is able to recall Toyah's false alarm so Hope concludes that Fiz must have cancer as well.  Fiz later corrects the record admitting she is still pregnant and that next week she will go to the hospital for a termination in what I consider to be a completely erroneous approach as neither of them are really old enough to grasp the explanation.  Ty and Fiz believe it is for the best.

On the other side of Weatherfield Joel's father wants to see whoever is in charge of the search for his son - but is ignored by DS Swain who wants to talk to Dee Dee who does not believe Joel is dead although his father does abd DS Swain thinks Dee Dee should hold the same opinion.  Why?

Eventually Bernie sits down with Billy (and Paul).  She tells a story about her father's ashes and says that they both have to let Paul go and both cry.  Later Bernie watches the ravers out of the window and asks Billy what do Dev and God have in common?  Apparently they both move in very mysterious ways.   And Billy realises that Paul would indeed love to be sent up to space as Billy admits he is coming round to the idea.  At the end the Street is illuminated by fireworks and Billy apologies to Todd.

In other news the Wednesday night episode was written by Jan McVerry and Jonathan Harvey. It is (at least for now) the latter's last episode for Coronation Street having written 331 since joining the team in 2004.  We have him to thank for the development of Todd over the years as well as writing for Sean.  I just wanted to thank him for his contribution and to offer our thanks for his sterling efforts.  I have known for a long time that seeing his name at the start of episode was welcoming as I knew it would have a little extra somewhere.  Above all may I cite Gail's monologue following Aidan's death in 2018.  I believe it moved everyone as she was at the time worried about David and the news of Aidan's departure was spreading through the Street.  Thank you Jonathan.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 2 August 2024

August already.  I know I sometimes have to face the inevitable and report events but tonight I was disgusted so I am going to ignore all subtlety and record the facts.  Joel gets a ne'er do well scrote to mug Lauren and steal her bag containing phone and keys.  Following the mugging she uses Max's phone to call a cab - hence revealing her location.  Joel then prepared some recuperative soup which he liberally laces with a drug intended (I think) to induce her labour.  He then locks her in the apartment (as he needs to get new keys cut) without a phone and abandons her to her fate.  Luckily Max and Bobby are concerned and Max decides to turn up outside the locked flat whilst Lauren writhes in pain.  We next see Lauren in a hospital bed with Max and a nurse both looking super concerned.  Later Dee Dee turns up with Joel at the hospital.  Max reveals that the 24 week baby (so tiny says Lauren) is receiving specialist care.

At 13 Coronation Street Debbie Webster is the official responsible adult (questionable) to attend Jack's interview at the cop shop.  DS Swain tries to get answers to her questions which revolve around the video evidence showing a person entering the reception whilst he was loitering around outside in a no doubt suspicious manner.  Given therefore that the evidence is against him he is to be charged with arson with intent to endanger life.  Can't see Adam getting him off that one in a hurry.  Adam is all for Jack pleading guilty to minimise the sentence.

Along at Underworld the underhanded overlockers get their comeuppance when Kirk takes the unlabelled box of "knock-off" T shirts to a customer and delivers them - much to their surprise.  Carla therefore receives a phone call asking why they have it and she is unable to explain.  Although when she came in early this morning she found Beth, Izzy and Betsy (LOH) also at work very early.  The penny drops and she wants answers (and is even harder than DS Swain).  Beth realises the game is up when Carla tells them she knows they are not stupid enough to use her hardware to make knock off T shirts.  Beth and Carla argue and in consequence Beth storms out of the office and her job, thinking she has another job - but without the T shirts no job either.

Back across t'Street at Number 9 Fiz is looking at a holiday in Barmouth as a way of keeping Tyrone from falling under that trollope Alina again even though he does not know she is on her way back to town.  Ruby meanwhile has a blackhead and is therefore not on screen this evening.   Fiz later undertakes some deft marketing to Ty to convince him of the benefit of a holiday.  They fall to discussing Jack and his charge and unobserved and unheard Hope descends the stairs to hear them talk about matches, fire starting, Hope's history and that Jack is not a bad lad.  Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Paul continues his campaign to donate his corneas (the MND association say that this is not possible) - which continues to discombobulate Bernie.  In the precinct Alya confirms to Summer as they head out for the day  that Paul cannot donate - they have to find a way of telling him.  The girls later confirm that whilst they cannot go to another person his organs might be used by MND Research and he is prepared to settle for that.  Bernie is not yet ready to face his absence and that is why she wants the talk about his demise to be at the root of every conversation.  Bernie talks and Paul admits he was ready to go and changed his mind.  She also grasps that he wants to leave a legacy when he does go.  They are reconciled.  She flushes the tablets which had been stored.

I am wondering if Hope helped Jack set the fire - but the videos DS Swain talked about made no reference to him being with someone else - and neither did she say that the video recording showed who set the car alight - if they had that video evidence then it would be cut and dried.  I am not sure Paul wanted Bernie to flush the tablets - does that mean he can no longer get Billy to help him?  And Beth has drifted into shit creek without a paddle.  Given the length of time since she was given a positive story this is hardly a surprise.
