Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 24 January 2025

Welcome.  The episode commenced with a very hungover Leanne waking up to find Ryan sharing her bed and it seems she has little recall of recent events.  He would like a nice big fry up - but Leanne suddenly realises that she should be in court this morning and is already late.  Her day gets worse when Debbie drives through a carefully located puddle soaking Leanne as retribution for her flirting with Ronnie - so she will appear quite woebegone in court.  Added to which even though she knows the boss of StreetCars he cannot provide a cab to get her to court.  Toyah offers to drive and despite herself Leanne is forced to accept.  Things improve slightly in court as Leanne is awarded community service and we look forward to her getting a role in the next series of "The Outlaws".  After toasting Nick and Toyah's passports and nearly causing a fire, just about everyone on the Street queues up to tell Leanne how self destructive she is being, how she cannot keep raiding the Bistro profits and that she needs to change.  She takes a decision to sell her share of the Bistro to Nick today and later we see documents being signed and she surrenders her keys to the flat.  It is unclear if she is paid any money but perhaps she would like to buy a share of the Rovers?  She and Ryan acknowledge it was a one off, especially after Tracy reminds Leanne she has been there (in 2012 for those with short memories and of course he was then wearing a different head).

The Platt household is far from happy - Lily is attempting the stroppy teenager routine even though she is only 11 and is apparently unaware of "stranger danger" as that only applies to little children.  David tells her she needs to be more "street smart" - but gets nowhere.  We later learn that "David the dog" (Dthed) needs to be more street smart as he has reportedly been hit by a car and is at the vet's for a scan.  Dthed apparently managed to escape from the garden - no-one knows how - and it may have been  a simple accident until later on David receives a text message from an unknown number but assumed to be Harvey that he (David the human) will be next.  [Following the response to the attack on Piper on Emmerdale it was notable that the incident was entirely off screen - apparently soap viewers are quite happy with humans getting murdered and the like but harm a single hair of a pooch on screen and the complaints go through the roof.  For those who are worried Piper is safe and well].  Of course David the human is worried about the vet bills and starts taking additional steps to secure the house and ensuring all is safe for his family. Dthed has to have an operation and will be on pain killers and will be home tomorrow to Lily's relief.

Bethany is back at Sarah's.  She has arranged to collect her stuff from Daniel's flat.  Bethany says that Audrey is right - the female family members have a screw loose over men.  Bethany has also decided that she is going to London and taking the job.  Over at Number 1 Ken is telling Daniel how disappointed he is and also worrying that Cassie has not arrived.  Daniel reports on the secret that Bertie is keeping and that Cassie is untrustworthy.  Given there have been multiple warnings Ken takes it seriously and later confronts Cassie.  Butter wouldn't melt with that one as she spins the most confected lie heard in years.  Ken swallows it and offers to pay for private consultations for her to help her addiction.

In hospital Lauren is a free woman and Frankie is responding well to the antibiotics and should soon be allowed home - finally they can start their new life.  Except that Joel's mother Anthea drops in.  She has not come to create trouble but to apologise for Gus, to say that they are dropping the custody case and that she feels guilty for what they did.  She says goodbye to Frankie and tells him to be good for his mum.  Max later says he would like Lauren and Frankie to be a real family together and get their own place and after some discussion they tell each other that they love each other.

Jenny and Daisy have a long chat with the former pointing out that Daisy only has herself to blame for being this week's topic of conversation over her activities.    As Bethany moves out Daisy comes by and Sarah has a few words to say.  However Daisy recalls that Sarah was in a similar situation between Adam and Damon not so long ago in the Bistro in 2023.  Honours just about even.  Later Bethany sits down with Daisy in the Rovers back room for a talk.  Bethany apologises for Sarah and admits Daisy being around continually drove her mad.  Daisy confirms Daniel's story that it was a mistaken one-off, but that she (Daisy) will always love Daniel and she apologises for upsetting Bethany in public, but Bethany was always chosen over her by Daniel as he loves her.  Bethany makes one observation - she does not reckon that either Daniel or Kit is fit or ready to be a parent to Daisy's baby and perhaps Daisy should consider being a single mother like Sarah.  Daisy later receives the DNA results but decides to delete the email unread, she has decided that neither individual is good enough to be the father to her baby.

Contrary to my earlier impressions whilst Tracy is back so is Tommy O and they are getting a swanky posh apartment in Cheshire - so presumably the coaching job in Spain has come to an end.

And on a slightly sad note this episode would typically have been filmed about 6 weeks ago - around the same time that Carol Royle's husband died in a freak accident.  It must be a huge loss for her and our sympathies go to her at this somewhat late stage.  I hope her appearance tonight was recorded before that event.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 22 November 2024

Tonight I feel as though the White Queen from Through the Looking Glass has been sprinkling her magic across Weatherfield (given that she can believe 6 unbelievable things before breakfast) and hope that I can convey events as they happened.  Lisa awakes on Carla's couch which is normally where Ryan spends the night - but apparently he enjoyed being elsewhere last night as we are later told.  Lisa cannot remember trying to start a sing along with Bo Rap.  Carla gets her a sausage bap from Roys Rolls - Lisa asks if she can have another sleep before she goes home.  Ryan is surprised that Carla did not seize the moment last night - and points out that it might not be too late.  Carla returns to the flat and tells Lisa not to continue getting dressed and drags the acquiescent woman into the bedroom.

Mason survived the night and Betsy wants them to get closer - but Mason appears to have grown a conscience and tells her that once he is sorted then he will consider it.  Logan and Matty are watching Betsy like hawks.  They eventually corner her in the alley off Victoria Street.  She says Lisa will be worried so they tell her to send her mother a text which she does using a code to say that she is in danger and the post coital Carla and Lisa are soon searching the streets to find her - but Logan/Matty are telling her that she needs to ensure Mason knows where his loyalties lie; luckily Ryan passes the end of the ginnel and Betsy calls him over and the ne'er do wells are on their way, one of whom Ryan recognises.  Mason meets Betsy in Roys Rolls and he passes her a piece of patisserie prepared in college today - and also gives Roy (who is partial to mille-feuille) a piece for later - Betsy declares her piece is gorgeous.  She denies having seen Matty and Logan.

Max is out of the big house and it does not take him that long to discover that Lauren is inside due to his parents' efforts when Kit interviews him and shows him the letter he wrote to Lauren.  He tells Jit that Lauren hit Joel to save Max's life - but he is still going to be prosecuted for perverting the course of justice.  Max is not amused.  Initially it seems that Frankie might be joining Lauren - but is there another possibility?  Lauren phones Roy and Max joins the call - Lauren would like him to take on Frankie and he tells David and Shona that is what he wants to happen.  However no-one seems to have considered that Max will go down for his own illegal actions.

Leanne is down - Oliver's four year anniversary is approaching and in Roys Rolls R'Tracy is back in full-on gobby mode wanting confirmation that she will be testifying against cult boy (Rowan).  And helping to get Amy's money back.  A little later Steve is getting coffee when Cassie comes in and is pleased to hear that Ken will be home soon - he just had too much warfarin (a blood thinner rarely prescribed these days as it has been replaced by Rivaroxaban which is much safer) in his system.  Steve then gives Cassie a dressing down for giving him too many tablets and sacks her again.  R'Toyota is listening and once Cassie has gone explains how Tracy knocked the pills flying earlier in the week so it probably was not Cassie's fault (although the audience is shouting as one that it WAS Cassie).  Tracy is told to leave number 1 by Ken and not to darken his door again.  Cassie is soon re-instated at Number 1 with a pay rise BUT we then see her searching online for drugs to make people drowsy!  Steve apologises for earlier and the more glamourous Cassie we now have makes a point of gracious acceptance.

Leanne pops into the Bistro and almost catches Nick and Toyah kissing.  How many men have those two both enjoyed?  Since Toyah's return it is Peter, Imran and Nick - are there more?  Toyah is coming to point where she feels that the world needs to know.  So presumably all will become clear next week, probably on Oliver's anniversary.

Betsy espies that Lisa is wearing a "new" top which exactly matches one Carla wears and immediately works out that she spent last night in Carla's bed and punishes her mother's misdeeds by throwing water over her top.  Lisa and Carla seek to explain that did not happen yesterday, but today might be another story.  Betsy reckons a day's difference has no effect.  As a result Lisa and Carla argue as Lisa wants to put Betsy first, so it is all over already.  Betsy is contemplating the day in Victoria Gardens and Carla joins her to tell her how life really is - and that Betsy needs to grow up.  Betsy does not want a Becky to be replaced and she does not want Lisa to want anyone other than her.  Carla tells her that we get one short life each, so wring some joy out of it.  That life has gone - and Betsy needs to accept that and allow herself and by implication Lisa the chance to move on.

Betsy offers Matty and Logan a deal.  If they promise to leave Mason alone then she will arrange to get them keys whilst the staff are on a team building day and they can have their fill of brand new laptops etc.  She will let them in and it will be the easiest job ever.  The deal is agreed.

So I struggle to believe that Max would not think about his own jail sentence, that Matty and Logan think that Betsy really means it, that Toyah has changed her mind so quickly, that Cassie is still drugging Ken, that Carla is no longer entirely straight, that Tracy did not really know where the pills should go and defend herself, that Roy won't enjoy the pastry and offer Mason work.  As it is after breakfast I am allowed seven?  I almost certainly won't be here next week but should be back in two weeks time to bring you all up to date again.

Coronation Street Episode Review Sunday 27 October 2024

Good evening.  As readers may be aware ITV X is making episodes available on the day of transmission - but for some reason this episode appeared on that resource on Friday and it was therefore watched in this house on Friday evening.  First up the antagonism between Sam and Toyah is writ large but Toyah persists and eventually Sam at least lets her stay so that they work on equipment which demonstrates Gail's heart operation.  When Nick returns he gets a demonstration of Gail's op and Sam departs to show it to Hope and later to go to the cinema.  Nick then has a heart to heart with Toyah which ends with lips locking and further close contact.  Nick does not want to upset Sam again or disrupt him and so the new Platt/Battersby pairing agree to keep their romance quiet for now which will inevitably lead to deception, discovery and recrimination in the coming weeks as people catch them in clinches.  Given that Toyah promised to not lie to Sam to start up again with Nick in secret in the same episode must be a record.

We have the big reveal this evening of Bethany's stoma, initially to us and then she unexpectedly exposes it to Daniel as he comes into the flat as he has a key.  She shouts at him and he departs - she had wanted  to choose when she showed him and did not like being caught unawares.  She phones Sarah who returns to the flat instead of visiting Gail - she thinks she might have been followed but is unsure.  Sarah receives a phone call from Damon who has suffered a beating but has convinced Harvey's goons that someone else in the gang has abstracted the cash from the lock up.  Damon says that there should be no further contact between them (and I do not believe that either).  Daniel has decorated Victoria Gardens (where they had their first wedding) in memory of Sinead and Bethany joins him.   Bethany apologises for her anger and Daniel re-assures her all will be well and they kiss.  Bertie is mentioned but never seen.

Much of this evening revolves around the Platt family which is back centre stage after a long time on the sidelines principally because Gail has undergone an operation which went well and she is on the road to recovery.  She will make a full recovery but needs to take life very easy for the next few weeks.  Gail is fixated on oxters (armpits) a much underused word.  Gail also discovers that Hugh Bonneville likes to add marmalade to his spaghetti bolognese!  David apologises for the upset he has caused Gail.  He is however more worried about the money as Jesse has found it and uplifted it but he hands it back to David.  In a strange apparent non-sequitur David returns to the lock up carrying the cash intending to return it but a member of the gang is present so David returns home with the cash.  David and Jesse discuss the cash and against the background that they are currently off Harvey's hook as Sarah passed the information onwards they broker an understanding and David offers to talk the family round if Jesse keeps it zipped.  Jesse wants a share of the cash.

Ken and Cassie are preparing for their trip to Porto, discussing a fado evening (I hope they enjoy it - it is amazing) and go shopping for suitable clothes.  Steve continues to be suspicious of Cassie and makes it clear that she should not accept the jacket which Ken has bought for her.  She returns the jacket and whilst she is out Ken tells Steve that he welcomes Cassie's company and for his sake would Steve please stop sniping so hard.  On her return with Ken apparently sleeping (but keeping an eye on the two of them) Steve offers Cassie a truce and they shake hands on it.  Has a corner been turned?

Kit appears to stalking Dee Dee - in the shop, in Roy's Rolls and eventually in the Rovers.  We also see Joel's father (sadly not his mother) and it transpires that Dee Dee attended Joel's funeral yesterday.  Mr Deering wants to know if Dee Dee has any more knowledge about Joel's demise - which she denies. Later she tells Kit she wanted the satisfaction of seeing Joel lowered into the ground and to know for certain that Joel was gone and buried forever.

No doubt she was originally intended to say those words to Martin - the entire Jesse story is riddled with holes - but putting that to one side he is probably a better bet than some of the others with whom she has been involved!  Jesse takes some time to think about it but when he returns to the hospital later he accepts the invitation.

A bit mixed this evening.  No sign of Lucy Fallon's bump as yet - the stoma will be hiding a lot.  I know that Gail was promised a good exit so I hope it will be.  I cannot believe Damon returned for a couple of phone calls and a beating - so there will be more I suspect.  No-one can keep a secret for long - Toyah tell Sam NOW.  And if Dee Dee actually did murder Joel why would she need to attend the funeral?  No doubt answers to all this and more will be along shortly..
