Episode Review Friday 2 January 2026

Happy New Year.  Welcome to Weatherfield, well almost.  Virtually the entire programme comes from Monkford Hall Hotel and I find it absolutely amazing that "Take a Vow" the wedding planner used by Debbie to bring the event together does not appear anywhere to ensure that it all goes smoothly, lousy wedding planner who would get a poor review in my book (can you ever give no stars when reviewing anything these days?).  Getting ready Bernie finds she has left behind her lucky pig so she and Bernie get lost in the woods seeking some yellow jasmine flowers (in January) and also find a golf buggy to enable return to the hotel in time for the ceremony.

Abi finds the money missing from the bank account as cash in one of Carl's bags (can I remind the writers that in the UK the banks refuse to handle more than £10k of cash at any one time without going through significant procedures - you cannot walk in ask for £18k cash).  Once at the hotel she swaps most of the cash for a bundle of newspapers and stashes it somewhere else (this was not shown but she later checks the bag and shows relief that the newspapers are still there).  She knows that Carl has a one way ticket and she also tells James that she knows the secret and he does not need to tell her that Carl is a bad egg, she exchanges similar confidences with Kev.

Carl has also found the post it note which Debbie wrote reminding her to phone Elaine and that it has been ticked so Debbie did phone her and knew she was about die.  So Carl has good reason to feel unhappy with Debbie.

Asha has told Amy that she is not taking her meds any more.  Quite why this needs to happen on the way to the wedding will probably become clear on Monday.  Billie is apparently a qualified minibus driver and brings all sorts of odd invitees to the party and later he tinkles the ivories - so many talents will be missed.  Amy tells Cassie, wearing a rather smart red outfit about Asha who advises Amy to keep talking to Asha to support her.  Tracy uses it as an opportunity to have another go at Cassie but the latter gets the better of the exchange.

At the start of the wedding ceremony Debbie sings a solo verse of "On Top of the World" with the rest back by the dementia choir.  In print I cannot convey how well she did this.  Ronnie makes his vows and Debbie had some written vows she decided not to use them - but just to tell Ronnie how much she loves him for joining her on her journey she is his now and forever.  Later Debbie makes Ronnie throw away his prompt cards and speak from his heart in the same way.  He calls her many wonderful things and adds the word complicated and the rest of the top table agree with the word being used!  He toasts Deborah his wife for life.

Kev has seen Jack's drone footage of Carl driving off in the stolen car which mowed down Tyrone some months ago.  So once the wedding has happened and it is Kev's turn for a speech as one of the bride's best men (complicated) he plugs in Jack's computer but instead of playing the drone footage he wants to discredit his brother he plays the recording of the dance moves he and Jack recorded the previous day, so Carl lives to breathe another five minutes.  Much later we see that Carl had swapped the laptops before Abi calls him heartless and selfish and she accuses him of hitting Tyrone and that she knows he is going to Germany.  He drops the incriminating laptop on the floor.  He claims the file is corrupted - but most people could pay for recovery.  She admits her stupidity in what she did.  She cannot forgive him for hitting Tyrone.  She takes her bag and goes.  (She should have picked up the laptop).  Carl thinks he still has the money when Debbie confronts him about Tyrone - but he responds with the post it note.  She blames her memory.  He shouts at Debbie for keeping him from his mother.  He takes the bag and goes.  She is utterly distressed in the show's closing shot.

Theo and Todd drove up last night.  At the reception Theo reminds Todd they are not drinking so Todd takes orange juices whilst later Todd spots Theo necking a glass of champagne.  James knocks a pint of beer all over Todd (and splashes Theo) so Todd goes to the bathroom to wash his shirt and Billy follows and sees the bruises from Theo's most recent brutal kicking.  Todd explains to Billy that it is not Theo's fault and takes him to show him the video of events.  Billy realises that the video has been edited and starts a lengthy watch of the unedited video footage and he tells Todd that Theo is gaslighting him.  Billy says that Todd has to get away from the toxic Theo.

Becky has Lisa and Betsy holed up in a hotel room and gets the latter two to have over their phones and sim cards so that she can do phone swaps to prevent them being tracked by whichever gang she alleges is after them and who firebombed the house (which was Becky wearing a rather fetching balaclava).  Even Lisa hands her phone over whilst Becky assures Betsy all her photos are safe on the sim card which is news to me.  Lisa puts Carla's engagement ring in an envelope which she passes to Sarah for Carla as it also contains the house keys.  Sarah takes a look at Carla's latest socials and can see that Carla is still wearing the ring in the envelope as she shows Kit.  DC Green turns his brain on and thinks that there is something suspicious going on.  He and Sarah head back to the flat where we know Carla was in the closet and this time finds a hair which is later confirmed as Carla's.  He finaly tells Sarah that he has been investigating Kim/Becky for some time.

The hotel used for the location is The Saddleworth Hotel, Oldham and this shot of Kev and Abi shows some of the wonderful scenery from that part of the world - not all old smoky back streets and the huge mill facilities and pre-eminent textile processing which characterises the location.

Coronation Street Episode Review Thursday 3 April 2025

How confusing, again no Friday episode this week so I have been shunted back to Thursday.  Abi is fussing around Kev and he is not very keen on it.  The school has emailed to make Kev aware of Jack's recent fight.  Jack wants to go to an end of term party and in the light of the email he cannot go.  Jack says he did not cause the fight.  Debbie confirms Jack's story.  Debbie is distracted as her toilets are blocked.  Kev pops into the garage but Tyrone is struggling under the cosh when Jack and Hope appear as school has finished early - and Jack is still not going to the party.  Later Abi settles Kev down for the next session at the hospital.  He sends her away as he wants to be on his own.  Kev recalls his own mother having cancer and will try and talk to Jack when he gets home.  Time passes.

Mick wants Chesney to go for a drink later but Chesney doesn't.  Chesney joins him in the Rovers before working but is on soft drinks.  Mick winds up Chesney up about being honest and owning up to the mistakes he has made.  Mick has had a complaint about his attitude via his boss.  Much later Chesney tells the quads to sleep and they do so - most unusual.  Chesney and Gemma are about to have some rare quality time when Mick and Lou arrive with alcohol at the back door and pour drinks.

Dee Dee has had major surgery but has decided to discharge herself.  She just wants to go home.  Ed arrives with Laila.  Why?  Ed explains that James is landing in the USA because Danny has had an accident.  Dee Dee refuses to move into the Bailey house and believes she can cope at home alone.  Ed gets her back to her flat when Debbie phones wanting her toilets unblocked and Ronnie is ill.  Ed feels he has no choice but to take the work leaving the baby with her mother.  I am sure Aggie would help her daughter if asked.  For a while Dee Dee and Laila are entirely happy but before long the baby either wants changing or a bok bok and the mother is unsure why it is crying.  Alya and Sarah respond to a call from Dee Dee so are able to assist.  Dee Dee eventually decides that she wants to lodge a formal claim citing negligence against the hospital - correctly based on what we were shown - but for the wrong reason as Dee Dee refers to "people who look like me" and "colour of my skin".  I thought we had got over the Bailey family and a link to the "R" word.  The treatment was wrong - just cite that - do not attribute cause - that is the responsibility of the hospital management.  James texts to say he needs to speak to her urgently (why not just phone?).  Danny is in an induced coma.  James is in bits.  He is unlikely to return soon.

In the cafe Julie wants a day out on the East Lancs Railway and I do not wish to carp but there were no trains running on the line today, they start this weekend.  Todd is fascinated by his phone, Eileen is not enthusiastic as she will die of boredom but George says he will bunk off and they can go to the railway.  Once they have departed Todd gets tarted up and welcomes Theo at the back door.  Theo admits it is weird not using the front door but obviously there is a need for some secrecy.  There is some banter and then they have a beer.  Theo inspects the family photos and Jason is particularly featured.  Within seconds Theo and Jason are snogging and the ad break comes far too late.  Later Theo is looking for his phone which Todd brings down from upstairs.  Theo stays for a chat and then rushes out when Julie etc return from their day out.  Theo disappears out the back door leaving his jacket which he later has to recover.  On his brief return Theo says it cannot happen again.

Hope and Jack are hanging around the precinct and see Toyah and Nick get off electric scooters - Toyah is saying that they need to do something different every month as a challenge (next month silent disco) - out of their comfort zones.  It gives Hope an idea and she dares Jack to hire scooters and go for a ride.  Hope has some dutch courage (medicinal brandy according to Evelyn) in full sight of PC Haywood and PC Tinker, so are promptly challenged, a situation which worsens when Tyrone appears from one direction and Kev climbs out of a taxi behind them.  Jack used his father's driving licence and credit card to hire the scooters.  Back at Kev's PC Haywood reads the kids the riot act but does not given them a caution and before leaving recalls that her father had chemo last year so Kev sees himself as the recipient of pity, which does not please him.

After a further argument at home with Jacki, Kev takes himself off to the Bistro for a quiet pint where Tyrone finds him.  Hope has been grounded for a month but Kev has not yet sorted it out with Jack.  Ty tries to be sympathetic but Kev is ultra prickly and calls Hope a bad influence.  Kev says she is organ grinder and Ty does not take kindly to the comment.  The two men argue and Ty knows Kev is having a difficult time and he would like Kev to be aware that he is doing a 60 hour week at the moment, seeing little of his family so Ty would appreciate less attitude and more gratitude.  Kev is not in the right frame of mind and suggests Ty finds a less useless business partner.  Ty just wants his mate Kev back.  Kev ask what that means.  Ty responds with "I quit".

I cannot put my finger on it but tonight did not feel right.  I do not think Jack would fall for being the monkey to Hope the organ grinder - and might be aware of the pain he is causing his father.  Ty has had his own challenges in the past so might just accept it is the way it is.  Dee Dee put herself in an impossible position by discharging herself and simply should not have done that.  And I despair at what are going to be two upcoming stories.  My concerns are not the writing and directing or the acting - but those providing the underlying direction at the moment may need to go and give their heads a good wobble please.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 2 August 2024

August already.  I know I sometimes have to face the inevitable and report events but tonight I was disgusted so I am going to ignore all subtlety and record the facts.  Joel gets a ne'er do well scrote to mug Lauren and steal her bag containing phone and keys.  Following the mugging she uses Max's phone to call a cab - hence revealing her location.  Joel then prepared some recuperative soup which he liberally laces with a drug intended (I think) to induce her labour.  He then locks her in the apartment (as he needs to get new keys cut) without a phone and abandons her to her fate.  Luckily Max and Bobby are concerned and Max decides to turn up outside the locked flat whilst Lauren writhes in pain.  We next see Lauren in a hospital bed with Max and a nurse both looking super concerned.  Later Dee Dee turns up with Joel at the hospital.  Max reveals that the 24 week baby (so tiny says Lauren) is receiving specialist care.

At 13 Coronation Street Debbie Webster is the official responsible adult (questionable) to attend Jack's interview at the cop shop.  DS Swain tries to get answers to her questions which revolve around the video evidence showing a person entering the reception whilst he was loitering around outside in a no doubt suspicious manner.  Given therefore that the evidence is against him he is to be charged with arson with intent to endanger life.  Can't see Adam getting him off that one in a hurry.  Adam is all for Jack pleading guilty to minimise the sentence.

Along at Underworld the underhanded overlockers get their comeuppance when Kirk takes the unlabelled box of "knock-off" T shirts to a customer and delivers them - much to their surprise.  Carla therefore receives a phone call asking why they have it and she is unable to explain.  Although when she came in early this morning she found Beth, Izzy and Betsy (LOH) also at work very early.  The penny drops and she wants answers (and is even harder than DS Swain).  Beth realises the game is up when Carla tells them she knows they are not stupid enough to use her hardware to make knock off T shirts.  Beth and Carla argue and in consequence Beth storms out of the office and her job, thinking she has another job - but without the T shirts no job either.

Back across t'Street at Number 9 Fiz is looking at a holiday in Barmouth as a way of keeping Tyrone from falling under that trollope Alina again even though he does not know she is on her way back to town.  Ruby meanwhile has a blackhead and is therefore not on screen this evening.   Fiz later undertakes some deft marketing to Ty to convince him of the benefit of a holiday.  They fall to discussing Jack and his charge and unobserved and unheard Hope descends the stairs to hear them talk about matches, fire starting, Hope's history and that Jack is not a bad lad.  Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Paul continues his campaign to donate his corneas (the MND association say that this is not possible) - which continues to discombobulate Bernie.  In the precinct Alya confirms to Summer as they head out for the day  that Paul cannot donate - they have to find a way of telling him.  The girls later confirm that whilst they cannot go to another person his organs might be used by MND Research and he is prepared to settle for that.  Bernie is not yet ready to face his absence and that is why she wants the talk about his demise to be at the root of every conversation.  Bernie talks and Paul admits he was ready to go and changed his mind.  She also grasps that he wants to leave a legacy when he does go.  They are reconciled.  She flushes the tablets which had been stored.

I am wondering if Hope helped Jack set the fire - but the videos DS Swain talked about made no reference to him being with someone else - and neither did she say that the video recording showed who set the car alight - if they had that video evidence then it would be cut and dried.  I am not sure Paul wanted Bernie to flush the tablets - does that mean he can no longer get Billy to help him?  And Beth has drifted into shit creek without a paddle.  Given the length of time since she was given a positive story this is hardly a surprise.
