Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 15 August 2025

After months of not being mentioned Dorin turned up tonight so that Steve could lose him playing hide and seek.  The whole world thought he had gone off in the broken fridge but luckily he was hiding in the back yard outhouse from which he emerged to swear Carl to secrecy.  Hope does not know her phone contains a picture compromising Carl and Abi as well as Ty's backside so when it falls out of a biscuit tin into a sink of water from which it might emerge working she is not amused.  Dorin was then allowed out of the shed and everyone, except Abi, was thankful he had been found - she worked out that Carl knew where he was and cannot trust him again.  However given his failure to look after Dorin Steve is homeless.  Hope is pretty tech savvy and it will all be backed up in the cloud, although she says not.  Hope however does not trust Carl - she thinks he did it on purpose - so at least she has something right.

Now that Ryan is living with Aunty Carla he can be told her secrets such as her intention to propose to Lisa.  She sets up the ring in the glass of champagne with Glenda for later.  Along the way we are reminded of Ty's proposal to Molly using the same trick where another couple in the same restaurant had a mariachi band to support the proposal!  Lisa eventually arrives at the Rovers and recounts how Becky proposed with a ring in a glass of champagne at which point Carla just about stops Glenda repeating the same trick.  Lisa wants to visit California so perhaps Carla could propose there?  It will be Carla's sixth wedding - she married Peter twice.

Alya is finally looking for a job.  However the application goes nowhere.  Dee Dee misses Laila rolling over for the first time as reported by James.  So Dee Dee comes over all motherly and decides she has to go part time.  She tells Adam the solution is to employ Alya as a legal assistant as she needs a job and they need another pair of hands, even if Adam is sleeping with her.

The fallout from the attack on Noah continues.  Danielle is convinced that Theo is responsible for the attack and bans Theo from seeing the children; plus Lisa Swain invites Theo down to the station to answer a few questions about the attack under full caution.  Noah did not see his attacker.  Theo claims he was at home all evening with Todd who confirms the alibi.  Gary does not admit he did it - but the way he is talking it looks like that he was in fact responsible, but later both Todd and Theo wonder what sort of monster they have released in Gary.

Ronnie thinks Debbie joining a dementia choir might be a good idea.  And is it likely that Debbie will consider it a good idea?  An inevitable row follows which gets worse when Ronnie shows little interest in wedding rings - which he was not planning to wear after the wedding.  Eventually there is compromise on both sides.

And in news which I did not want to hear Carl tells Abi he does not want "this" to end.  Worse - nor does Abi as she wants it to go on forever.  These two are just so wrong.  Please end this story next week.

Just to note that the last gig Roy attended was the Spinners in 1978 (possibly 14 October - Manchester Free Trade Hall £1).  Farewell concert in 2021.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 7 March 2025

Good evening.  I am hopeful that the various displacements of recent weeks are at an end and we are back to regular programming.  We open in the Accident & Emergency Department (it is nice to know that Weatherfield, unlike my local hospital does not consider an Accident to be an Emergency) waiting area where Shona is waiting as Daniel slouches in with his hands in his pockets, alongside Jenny.  They have repaired David's artery and given him a transfusion whilst Daisy has a broken arm but no-one is allowed to talk about the potential abruption.  Ere long David is waking up and is no doubt pleased to hear from Shona that he is going to be alright once they catch the toerag who did this.  Nick and Sarah-Lou sit beside the bed saying nothing.  Max is in Durham in isolation.  Shona departs and Sarah tells David they know it was a setup and give David the suicide note he wrote.  Nick points out that the plan had more holes than the colander in our kitchen.  Sarah says they need to stick together and say nothing to anyone else.  David insists that no-one should tell Shona - no please do not tell her and make it worse.

Along a corridor somewhere else in the hospital Daniel tells Jenny that the money has reached Daisy's bank account, just before Daisy awakes and confirms she is OK.  However Daniel has to break the news that another ultrasound is needed - which Daisy has some trouble believing.  However the ultrasound confirms it is the case and she will go into labour with medication to assist and she will be discharged tomorrow.  [My resident medical expert, aka the good lady wife intimated that this is not what the hospital would normally do so presumably there is to be further stress before an advert break shortly].

Carla is re-instating her face and is going to work for a couple of hours where there is a welcoming committee of Sally, Sean and Izzy who express that they are chuffed at her return before she reminds them that the Wentworth order needs to ship TODAY!  Bobby dares to put a foot in Carla's office and apologises again.  Carla tells him she will be civil - she can manage that.  After a couple of hours, just before leaving, she upbraids Betsy for staring at her phone which is reporting that Rob has been sighted in Brighton.  Except Carla returns to her flat to find it has been raided - the cash and painkillers are gone so she knows it must be Rob.  Later Carla and Lisa are clearing up the mess and Lisa tries to convince Betsy not to go out - but Betsy knows better and when she leaves we see a shadowy hooded figure following her.

Julie is meeting the palliative care nurse at the hospital and of course the minute Eyelash is in earshot they are talking about something completely different.  George and Todd are both trying to maintain their cool in the light of Julie still being unable to tell Eyelash.  On Julie's return from the hospital she wants an early evening and refuses Eileen's invitation to a meal at Speed Dahl.  Eileen cannot understand why Julie is avoiding her.

Along at Roy's Rolls an outing is being organised to see Evelyn and Alya's conscience is finally starting to kick in as she is defending a coercive controller in court, as she says everyone is entitled to a fair trial!  Later in Speed Dahl Roy and Yasmeen report that Evelyn is well and enjoying her course.  Yasmeen however has news - she has been offered a job - which raised absolute incredulity in this house.  As a reminder she is 71 (Shelley King is younger).  The job is somewhere near Zeedan in that London, with a charity dealing with modern slavery and she will have to sell the house and Speed Dahl.  Roy talks her into going.  I know there is no longer a retiring age in this country but frankly I doubt a charity would consider it appropriate to offer what I assume is a full time job to someone needing to relocate at that age.  So having decided she also has to break the news to Alya that she will be homeless shortly.  Alya has her own problems as she tells Adam; her employer Fabians gave her two choices when she raised her problem - defend the client or quit.  She quit.  And now she has quit she has to repay her training costs (she would have signed a document to that effect or it is not legally enforceable).  On top of which Adam refuses to employ her - he wants to keep his personal and professional lives separate (that is a new one).  Alya is however happy for Yasmeen when the news breaks and wishes her well with her new challenge.

Dylan is "settling in" - his new "best friend" is introducing him to prison ways.  Sadly Dylan is not prison wise and is talked into getting himself in debt and we all know what that means.

Kit pops in to see David - they know the car was stolen, the driver was Andrew Garland, identified from CCTV - David's alibi and best mate? - but David is saying nothing.  Shona however recalls his earlier phone call and wants answers.  (Money reminder - it was Carla's money stolen by Stephen, recovered by Daisy to buy into the Rovers which the brewery had bought and then sold when it had new owners).  David comes clean to Shona once Kit has gone and admits it was his idea to get the money from the life insurance to pay off Harvey.  Shona does not know that Daisy has spent the money on the Rovers and dashes down the corridor to the grieving pub owner and demands money to solve the Platt problem with Harvey.  Shona storms into Daisy's room and demands £40k from Stephen/Carla's money and blackmails her over Debbie's car which she crashed (and hit Shona).  Daisy tells Shona that she has just lost her baby.  Daisy soon realises that she has to give £40k of Bertie's money to Shona to buy her silence and she will return the rest to Daniel.  Daisy tells Daniel that this whole mess is over.  But she will never be over losing her baby.  However this still leaves Daisy and Jenny with the need to pay money to Carla - BUT Daisy no longer cares much for Jenny giving that she told Kit he was the father.

You may have gathered that aspects of this episode did not ring true with me - possibly because it was mainly mopping up after Wednesday.

In passing can I record that I thought the episode on Wednesday was a complete mess as part of a continuing drama in Weatherfield being more suited to Walford or heaven forefend the Dales.  Whoever conceived and oversaw the melange presented on screen should be given their marching orders forthwith and let professionals get back to telling stories about the lives of friendly people on a Northern back street.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 4 October 2024

Good evening.  Tonight is dominated by a rave outside the gates of the closed Nuttall's brewery where initially Ryan and subsequently another DJ (Chris) play catchy little beats for the residents to celebrate Paul's life.  Billy starts the day with a mahoosive hangover.  Bernie has already collected the ashes before Billy gets to the undertakers setting the day off to a worse start for Billy who is having to deal with Paul not hearing his final message as revealed by Bernie.  Formal permission for the road closure has not arrived but Kit is helping man the barriers and will flash his card if there are any queries.  Daniel wants Vera's and salmon and trout - no idea is Dev's response and nor have I.  Paul's ashes have pride of place adjacent to the decks - Bernie has split them and hands a box to Billy as the rest will be sent into space.  Billy starts shouting at Bernie who tries to explain but she soon shouts back.

Andy Garland was in jail with David and Paul so turns up at the rave to announce he has gone straight.  They recall "Minty" as he always had a packet and the freshest breath in the prison.  Bernie and Billy both fume separately on opposite sides of the Street.  Billy makes up his mind and dashes through the ravers, grabs the urn and returns to his flat, where he holds the urn tightly.

Gail reappears to announce the Platts will be homeless as she is selling the gaff and putting them on the Street.  It is the only way to meet the Turkish hospital costs.  Ken tries to talk Daniel out of using Bertie's Trust Fund.  Daniel asks Adam's advice who reveals that Damon has offered to pay with the  money stolen in the armed robbery - which Daniel says Sarah must reject and that Sarah should not be told about it.  Adam pops along to the jail to see Damon.  Damon says they have both lost Sarah - but he can supply the money Bethany needs (and by the way he still loves Sarah).   Adam tells Daniel who tells Adam that he will do anything rather than use Damon's money.  Daniel also forces Adam to delete the voicemail - but honestly I am not convinced that he did so.  Gail is going to get a bridging loan until the house is sold.  David is booking a homeless shelter for his Christmas lunch.

Even Ken gets in a quick rave.  And then Bernie spots the missing urn.

Carla is tetchy and it gets worse when she opens a mystery brown envelope which Ryan delivers.  Ryan thinks it is about the ABH charge and likely community service sentence.  Ryan later reads the content of the envelope and finds it is the decree absolute for Carla's divorce from Peter.  And whilst Carla knew it was coming, so is death, but when it happens it is a shock.

Kirk is setting up a "Singles to Mingle" group - but fails to tempt DS Swain (whose right arm mysteriously rarely moves) to join him and Ryan.  I am worried about Kirk - he gets "Sleeping with the Enemy" {Julia Roberts} confused with "Sleepless in Seattle" {Meg Ryan} - it is enough to keep me awake at night.

Fiz and Tyrone initially tell Hope and Ruby that there is no baby and that it was a false alarm.  Hope consults Sam who is able to recall Toyah's false alarm so Hope concludes that Fiz must have cancer as well.  Fiz later corrects the record admitting she is still pregnant and that next week she will go to the hospital for a termination in what I consider to be a completely erroneous approach as neither of them are really old enough to grasp the explanation.  Ty and Fiz believe it is for the best.

On the other side of Weatherfield Joel's father wants to see whoever is in charge of the search for his son - but is ignored by DS Swain who wants to talk to Dee Dee who does not believe Joel is dead although his father does abd DS Swain thinks Dee Dee should hold the same opinion.  Why?

Eventually Bernie sits down with Billy (and Paul).  She tells a story about her father's ashes and says that they both have to let Paul go and both cry.  Later Bernie watches the ravers out of the window and asks Billy what do Dev and God have in common?  Apparently they both move in very mysterious ways.   And Billy realises that Paul would indeed love to be sent up to space as Billy admits he is coming round to the idea.  At the end the Street is illuminated by fireworks and Billy apologies to Todd.

In other news the Wednesday night episode was written by Jan McVerry and Jonathan Harvey. It is (at least for now) the latter's last episode for Coronation Street having written 331 since joining the team in 2004.  We have him to thank for the development of Todd over the years as well as writing for Sean.  I just wanted to thank him for his contribution and to offer our thanks for his sterling efforts.  I have known for a long time that seeing his name at the start of episode was welcoming as I knew it would have a little extra somewhere.  Above all may I cite Gail's monologue following Aidan's death in 2018.  I believe it moved everyone as she was at the time worried about David and the news of Aidan's departure was spreading through the Street.  Thank you Jonathan.
