Corrie & Corona - the lockdown lowdown! Press Day Interviews {Part 1 of 3}

As a devout Corrie fan (as I imagine you are, reading this), the last 3 years for me, have been peppered with surreal Corrie moments, when writing for this Blog. As I write this, the world is a funny place, and Corrie has (and has always) remained that mainstay and salve, the constant we all cling on to.

Having attended a few of these press days in the past, I've had to contain childlike excitement when Audrey Roberts paused for a chat (not to me!) at studio reception, Pat Phelan pounced on us on a private set tour, and I once said a cheery ‘good morning’ to David Neilsen who was in full Roy Cropper costume! So many Corrie moments to cherish and this week was no exception!

Last Wednesday 10th of June I was invited to my most surreal Corrie press day yet! My first ever zoom call (no pressure, then) with about 30 journalists/entertainment writers, John Whiston (JW) (Managing Director of Continuing Drama and Head of ITV, North), series producer Iain MacLeod (IM) and Corrie cast members Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) and Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby).

An hour of juicy gossip, Corrie COVID chat, storyline secrets and insider knowledge means that this is a three-part blog post (I could have done six but we are getting used to three now, right?), and believe me, you cannot miss this. In this first part, we interview Corrie head honchos Iain Macleod and John Whiston who give us the lowdown on what lockdown has been like in the world of Weatherfield.

How has Corrie been affected by social distancing?

JW - "We’re maintaining 2m distance, we have poles going around and have divided our filming units into cohorts – they stay in the same studios, using their own equipment. We also have one way systems through the building which are colour coordinated. We were going to do blue and red but someone pointed out there are too many football tribalisms in Manchester! We have brought in minimal crews so keeping numbers low of people on set. Crews used to be 30-40 in size but now we have 12-15 people on set and that includes cast’’

IM - “How on earth do you make a programme about social interactions, romance, someone punching someone in the Rovers adheres to social distancing? It’s been incredibly challenging. We’ve stripped everything back to what soap originated with – brilliant dialogue played brilliantly by an extremely talented cast. We’ve taken out all essential prop interactions, we’ve taken eating and drinking out. We’re losing kissing, hugging, holding hands which provide challenges. We had a scene in a pre-pandemic universe that required a character to try and kiss another which is now not acceptable. So the writer had to craft it and made the come on verbal – it works equally well. It’s a challenging time for everyone who works on the show but everyone has risen to the challenge"

How has filming on location been affected?

IM - "All location filming is suspended indefinitely. Essentially, we know the measures we put in place are enforceable and safe. We have it all nailed down here where we feel we have minimised risk. It’s much better to keep things here to make sure everyone is safe"

JW - "If there is something we might have done off site – say if we need a courtroom, which we might need to {that’s not a spoiler by the way} we can just build one."

Will we see any time jumps pre/during/post virus scenes and storylines?

IM - “Yes – it was a tricky conundrum. Much of it was written and shot before the pandemic – so the remaining scenes will be shot strictly adhering to the new measures and guidelines in place. Fictionally it created a world where people were half acknowledging and half not which would have been weird. In episodes on 24 July, they are the first ones where they acknowledge the pandemic there. It’s just like the flip of a switch, a day/night transition. We agonised over it but I think the audience understands and will go with it. The wrapping paper has changed but its still the gift of corrie. We will also see a lot of washing hands, social distancing conspicuously, people talking about older relatives who are being shielded upstairs in bed or out of the way. A lot of our businesses will be operating as takeaways but it’s possible that Roy’s cafĂ© can open by the time they air but it was safer to bet on people not being able"

So what do we think so far, Corrie fans? Delighted that Corrie will acknowledge this horrendous world event, they've no choice, right? Or, do we close the curtains and imagine none of this is happening, people drinking in the rovers return bar, lovers masquerading in trysts, and nobody acknowledging the real world, at all? For obvious reasons, the latter couldn't happen anyway, so I think we are getting the best of it all, the only other option being it goes off-air and I cannot imagine that to be honest!

To Be Continued...

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 17 July 7.30pm

Man-eating Maria's ravenous appetite is still starving, so Emma sets her up on another internet date.
Will this lunchtime get-together fare any better for our favourite stylist?

Talking of romance, Eileen is easily bought by Jan's gift of flowers. With Seb sulking about Alina dumping him, Eileen hides her newest (dodgy builder) relationship from her lonesome lodger.

Sarah gifts the factory girls with their official share certificates and thoughts turn to sun-kissed holidays. Dreams are soon dashed though, as she tells the girls that if they want to rebuild the factory, they will need to invest their shares into some building work. The insurance won't be any time soon as the factory collapse and investigation is still ongoing (where is the report!?).

Speaking of which, Sarah's suspicions about Gary's involvement in the roof collapse has Adam's conscience pricked. With news of Nick's innocence reaching the solicitor, Adam decides to tell Imran his suspicions and Sarah questions Gary about the voicemail message. Adam decides it's time the police were called, yet surprisingly, Sarah still has her doubts.

Rocked by the sudden reappearance of Rick's lackey, Sharon, Gary spins her the same story he told Rick's daughter. However, murder is the least of his worries, as the police collect him from Coronation Street, to question him about the roof collapse.

Settling into Tyrone's, Roy is having a busman's holiday by making a fry up for Ty. However, Evelyn's backache has spoiled her appetite. Ed relays the news that the Roy's Rolls could be closed for weeks =, and Evelyn protests (perhaps a bit too much) about Roy staying any longer.

Meeting in the Rovers, the workers unite and discuss whether to stick or twist with their share options. As votes are counted, the majority agree to spend their cash on getting the factory re-built (no 'love island' for Beth or Kirk then). Also in the Rovers, Moira flirts outrageously with Jan, only for Eileen to finally tell the her that SHE is dating him... just as Seb walks in!

Out on her date, Maria's match appears to be a bit of a Mummy's boy who talks with a posh accent!.

I can't see this going well, can you?.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 9th of Jan of 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog.

Revenge, regret, biblical theorising, and Pam Ayres, all laid claim to tonight's superb first half of Coronation Street.

From the pen of Jonathan Harvey, Lewis's funeral was always going to be laced with 'Carry on Corrie' and promising drama, as the dastardly charming cad was laid to rest. With Audrey's money still nowhere to be seen, the salon supremo was in no mood to attend the funeral. Until however, she sees Mary being late with the wreaths and decided to rope in Gail and Nick, in attending the ceremony.

With Billy otherwise engaged (flirty theological fun with Paul), the ceremony was comedically led by Weatherfields 'other vicar' (Hayley Cartwright).

Reminiscent of the salon awards ceremony, Lewis's funeral was full of camp camaraderie;  Evelyn as professional mourner (Blanche #Mark2) Claudia suddenly descending into Pam Ayres territory and Audrey again taking centre stage culminating in her claiming that Claudia had, in fact, nicked the cash, to extend her Salon empire. ABBA also piped through the music system, as Lewis's coffin slowly went to the flames. High camp indeed!.

To draw shade on Lewis's farcical funeral, Corrie gave us a little darkness, with Sally's nightmare conviction, still not overturned. As Gina and Tim try to convince Weatherfield police that Duncan's Mrs is still alive, Sally's ally Abi has now been released and the ex-mayor is left with drug dealing in her cell from her scouse cellmate (I forget her name). When the screws come calling, Sally is blamed as grass, and gets beaten up (off-screen).

Also trying to mitigate in Weatherfield's recent crime wave, Eileen tries to cool down Liz, who from being run over by Jenny, to being conned by Hannah and Jim, quite rightly seeks
to enact revenge and right some wrongs. Has Ellen managed to cool Liz down?. I hope not. Liz going against Jenny is like 'Aud V Claud' but with a harsher more darker slant.

In other news, Brian needs a new job, and Rita is feeling past-it. Can the former teacher run The Kabin, perhaps?.

Like Billy the vicar, I shall be back later for a second date, later tonight, with my review of 8.30pm's episode.

CORRIE PRESS DAY: Bethany’s attack! – Lucy Fallon Interview

Welcome to interview No. 4 of my visit to the Coronation Street set, and my day caught up in a flurry of exclusive summer storyline interviews.

Located just behind the new set extension (I think this was built at the same time), I hurried out of the TV studios ‘Corrie Hub’ for a final quick vape (breathing in ‘Weatherfield’ air, what a privilege) and headed back to the kitchenette for some water. Quenching my Corrie thirst for the final time on this amazing press day, in strolls the bright and breezy Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt) to answer today’s closing set of interview questions.

As Kayla reaches a breaking point, will she seek revenge on Bethany Platt?

At what point does Bethany realise that Kayla might not be all she seems to be?
From the beginning the relationship hasn’t been great, she then starts to convince Craig that his OCD rituals don’t work, and Bethany starts to suspect.

Do you think Bethany is still dealing with all the emotional issues from the grooming storylines?
Yes, she is still dealing with that and we will always see those emotions come up in any storyline in future. When we spoke to survivors and victims, one thing they said was, it something that will stay with Bethany forever, and not something just disappears one day, she will always have that with her.

Would you like to see Bethany have a bit more happiness?
No, because I want to do challenging gritty storylines rather than the really happy ones. A bit sadistic maybe but that’s it.

Has Neil groomed his own daughter into believing he’s innocent or to attack Bethany and Craig?
He’s just forced Kyla to believe that he is a good person and that Bethany is the one that’s made it all up and she forced Craig to lie for her and cover it up, so yes in a way, he has groomed her.

Kayla does have a twisted streak though when she attacks Bethany?
Although Kayla attacks Bethany, it isn’t pre-meditated. Bethany goes to Kayla’s house looking for Craig and sees a picture there of Neil, so Kayla hits Bethany over the head, but nothing is pre-planned, it’s a panic reaction.

Could Bethany and Kayla actually become very close friends in the future?
I think after everything happens, when she gets hit over the head by her, Bethany starts to realise that Kayla is just as much a victim as she is. You’ll not see a friendship but Bethany wants to help her get help.

Do you see Bethany as a character that could continue on the street for a few more years?
Yes, I really love playing Bethany, I love the character. There are so many things you can do with the character. She’s just turned 18, so there are so many different things they can do with her now, and I really like playing her.

Interview over, I leave via the Studio back-gate with the journalist ensemble, heading towards media city tram stop. As the tram pulls away, I look across Manchester, and can still see cranes near the original and iconic Granada Studios set. I can’t help but wonder what press days were like back then...

I am @rybazoxo and I write Wednesday night episode reviews for @CoroStreetBlog.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 23rd of May 2018 7.30pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog and the first of tonight's two-episode reviews.

Faye breaks the 'first one to talk, did it' rule while lingering around Eileen's backyard. Hiding behind a snazzy new fringe, will Faye's revenge against Eileen remain undiscovered?. Nicola Rubenstein is still on her side, but what has angered Faye all of a sudden?.

As David's day of reckoning calls, Shona is in a race against time to try and retrieve some form of mitigating circumstances.

On the street, Josh's old gym buddy turns up and admits she's seen Shona hanging around his old place of work. Is the net slowly closing in on Josh?.

The mitigating circumstances tact would help Zeedan too but it looks like he's leaving the street anyway. Jaded by the KANA romance and the back alley fight, not even Imran, Yasmeen, nor Rana's upset has any effect on his decision.

Meanwhile, the police tell Eileen to take notes, but they're still convinced Phelan is dead. Although we must remember, this is Weatherfield police. They tell Eileen he's been spotted at a karaoke in Luton (what would Phelan's song choice be?)and even a library in Abergele, North Wales.

Abergele you say.. in a caravan? with a beard?.

I wouldn't sharpen your pencil too soon, Eileen!.

Anyway, that's me done for another week.
