Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 23 August 2024

Good evening.  All aboard for a tour along Coronation Street!  We might as well start at the Chariot Square Hotel where Alina's mystery watcher has followed her to her room and having been allowed in makes it clear that she needs to shut her mouth - luckily Ron Bailey happens to be wandering around as Alina has some broken plumbing - and he strong arms the heavy out of the door.  Alina decides that she needs to do an unencumbered run for it so Dorin is dumped on Number 9 - and the earlier hours that Fiz spent in tears worrying if Ty was about to take up with the floozy are laid to rest as she is off into the wide blue yonder and Ty, having lost Jack to Kev gains a Dorin in exchange.  Remember in Hebrew (not Romanian) Dorin means gift.  So this was foreseen when he was named by Alina during her absence from the Street.  Fiz is not keen - but there seems to be no alternative.  Later Hope and Evelyn make it clear that they are not sold on the idea - only Ruby seems keen!

The spectre of Nathan Curtis hovers over Sarah-Lou and DS Swain wearing a swirly pattern jumper pops into Underworld to invite Sarah for a conversation, under caution, on the "evidence" found in Nathan's van.  Sarah is unable to shed any light on the events but obviously is pretty certain that Kit could!  (Will the knitwear achieve world dominance like Sarah Lund's Faroese  jumpers?).  Oddly, given that we know that Toyah and Imran had to drive to the police station because it was so far away, once interviewed Sarah elects to walk back to Underworld!  However DS Swain reckons that someone planted the hair on Nathan and later talks to Kit about it telling him that she knows Curtis has been setup.  Kit tries to blame Joel - but DS Swain is having none of it - Kit pushes her back to working out they get Joel convicted.

Sarah also takes Daniel to task - he needs to get Bethany to back off from pursuing Nathan as she knows it could bring the house of cards tumbling down.  Daniel catches Kit in t'Street and tells him that he has to do the right thing - which of course would be the end of his police career.  Kit declines saying that he did not plant any evidence and Daniel is barking up the wrong tree. Events mean that Daniel lets slip his suspicions to Daisy - who observes that Kit is definitely not someone you want to cross.

Dee Dee has to apologise to Emily and Dee Dee brings her up to date on recent events.  Dee Dee also tells Emily that she needs to look after Maeve as Joel is dangerous.  The tracking app means that when Joel pops into Adam's office to berate Dee Dee for reporting him to the Solicitors' Regulation Authority she knows he is coming and is able to take a deep breath before he kicks off another series of threats after Emily has refused him visits to Maeve.

Amy is not exactly excelling as waitress in the Bistro and having been given a pep talk earlier on by Rowan, mystic cult leader, who is amazingly focussed on the financial needs of a phantasmagorical "Resource Centre" which needs money and yet will generate profits from day 1, she takes a polite request from Nick to get the job done as reason to lay down her job and become an entrepreneur by investing Deidre's money (despite Aadi's warning ringing in all of ears).  Meanwhile Toyah and Nick have been to a tasting together and she is in a very good mood.  Tracy is proud of Amy standing up for herself and Rowan turns up - so that Amy can confirm she will be investing.  And Rowan will arrange an upload session (from her bank account to his).

Kirk attempts to broker peace in the Middle East between Beth and Craig and initially it goes badly but Beth does eventually apologise for causing Craig problems at work.  However Craig cannot let matters rest and feels that Beth needs to explain events to Kirk as to why they fell out and then Kirk realises that he was delivering (wrongly) the knock off T-shirts and he kicks off storming out of the Rovers.  She explains that she wanted a proper wedding - but Kirk is unhappy that he has been lied to again.  Beth turns on Craig for insisting that Kirk be told.

A solid episode - bit lacking in the humour department but we are where we are at the moment.  I was left wondering why Daisy is being drawn into the story around Nathan Curtis and Kit - but I suspect that in some way something she will hear at the Rovers may be a key element.  But I could well be wrong.  I think we all know that Beth will be leaving and that is fast approaching.  Physically I have to say that she looks awful and I hope that it is all down to make up.

Next week I will be away on the high seas on a short cruise but I hope to be back the following week having spent the day chasing a steam engine on the Swanage Railway.

Coronation Street episode review Friday 19 July 2024

Good evening.  When this episode aired I was waiting to be treated to 90 minutes of Madness (other musical entertainment is available).  They may be a little older - but they still manage a stonking good set.  Up in Weatherfield Lauren confirms that Nathan Curtis is responsible for her injuries but refuses to give DS (she is on duty) Swain a statement so holding him for an attempted murder might prove difficult.  Max and Bobbie visit with the latter offering Lauren his bed (he promises to sleep elsewhere) as well as bringing her up to date on the troubles which Roy has experienced.  Lauren tells Joel that she wants to go to Ireland and he says he will sort it and will put her up in a hotel short term.  Lauren once discharged heads to Roys Rolls and apologises telling him some of the story and then hugging him.  However in the absence of a better offer (Carla had refused her a bed) she lets Joel put her in a hotel.

Betsy blackmails Beth into cutting her into her black market operation creating fake high end T shirts with designer labels.  Roy has been convinced to go at stay with Kathy in Scarborough and Carla offers to drive him over the East Coast and she will have a couple of days off.  Beth and Betsy ("LOH") can see that black market  stitching opportunities will abound in her absence as it is easy to pull the stitching over Sarah's eyes.

Rowan has more to hide than just photos with which to blackmail Nick - he has another identity - he is really called Luke!  Under Rowan's blackmail Nick has however conceded that he will put £20k into the resource centre which will soon pay back its investors because all cults generate profits to pay off debts in no time.  Seeing Nick crumble leads Toyah to lift Rowan's driving licence and with a reverse image search on t'internetwebby thingy (which in an unbelievable co-incidence Sam had explained how to use earlier in the episode) finds a newspaper report of Luke being sentenced for aggravated burglary and assault.  Meanwhile R'Toyota has a phone call to make a medical appointment - so there is bad news in the offing.

Lisa (off duty Swain) asks Sean for a drink and information about the other workers at the factory and he reveals they have a new gobby employee - what a surprise!

Dylan walks into Speed Dahl and asks Stu for a job.  Stu eventually offers him a first shift.  Elsewhere in the passage way / ginnel / cut through opposite Speed Dahl Stu spots what looks like the now released Mason Radcliffe dossing down in a sleeping bag.  He is subject of a restraining order and can go nowhere near Dylan or more importantly Liam - who have had a letter saying that Mason is being released.  Stu comes to tell Sean that Dylan did not show for his planned shift - and has not been in touch.

Everyone is starting to be concerned about Gemma and family getting split up but she is sure that they will sort something.  Paul is noticeably weaker and the war between her and Kit shows no signs of a cease fire.  Paul wants the fighting to end.

Joel moves Lauren into his flat as he is moving in with Dee Dee and the ex-wife wants evidence of all of his expenditure to aid her claim for settlement of the divorce.  She is in the flat when Dee Dee arrives seeking from rest and relaxation and Joel only just keeps her out of the bedroom.  However in the second indication that IT is taking over the world Lauren tells Joel she has written and unsent email to DS Swain telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth - which will get sent if she is not around to prevent it being sent, she claims she is no longer the stupid scum which Joel believes her to be (I can only hope she has copied Dee Dee on the email).  Later he shows an air ticket to Lauren for 12 August - three weeks' time.  (Which is telling.  We lost a whole week's worth of episodes to the Euros so in theory we are seeing Friday 12 July - obviously there was always a plan to lose three episodes).

Meanwhile Joel is investigating drugs which might lead to an end to a certain pregnancy.

This episode was a little unusual in that at the mid way break we moved to a second day - all episodes are still made as two half hourly episodes - hence there usually being two writers credited - but it is rare it is explicitly over two days.  More than some episodes there were also bits keeping other stories moving - often the two producing blocks do not mention the other stories - but given the events next week there are important reasons to keep certain items in focus.  An apology this evening for the images included being of different formats.  ITV X looks like it has had an upgrade which means that overlays are not vanishing.  Sorry.

And for a change some predictions:
  • Mason has had a huge argument with his father and left home
  • Sarah will prove cuter than she looks and catch on to Beth and Betsy
  • Joel will lose his temper
  • Stu will think Mason deserves a second chance and will put on the same shift as Dylan.
The truth is out there somewhere.

Coronation Street Episode review Friday 14 July 2023

After last week's car crash I am back and ready to write.  We open with R'Leanne congratulating R'Toyota on her engagement to Geoffrey.  To think they left together for that London over 20 years ago (February 2003) so it has been a long time coming.  Leanne also warns Spider that if he messes her sister around she will rip his head off.  Even Simon is present to celebrate!

Sam cannot go to school for silence day as he needs to be at home for 48 hours.  Spider is summoned to a meeting at Freshco's car park at 11:30.  We see him waiting for a contact and sat in a car there are two obviously "shady" men (uncredited) watching him.  Back at the flat Sam wants to go and play chess with Roy, Leanne goes shopping and a mystery visitor, Leyla, Spider's ex-wife, is at the front door and wants a chat.  Sam nags to see Roy.  Toyah explains to Leyla that Sam is not hers.

Just before the break Leanne and Spider meet at the precinct and Spider is alarmed as his almost ex-wife is abroad.  Spider phones R'Toyota and Leyla twigs that Toyah has become discombobulated when she is offered another cup of tea - not having finished the one in her hand.  Spider and Leanne arrive back at the flat - no people, plant pot all over the carpet and a broken mug.  No Sam either.  Leanne phones Sam - he is safe and playing chess.  So Spider thinks it must be the far right group that are targeting him.

Platt's-ville all have the day off as it is the anniversary of Kylie's stabbing (so it is actually 15 July) and a visit to the cemetery is planned.  Max is not sure he wants to participate (well he is booked on a prison visit with Lauren who has been in the garden all this time).  They head off to meet Lauren's father.  At the prison Reece Bolton tells them how bad prison is and wants Max to amend his story so that Griff gets all the blame as Reece claims that he was duped by Griff just like Max and he was only doing it to protect Lauren.  They apply the thumbscrews but Max is not as green as he is cabbage looking and tells them that Reece can forget it - he is not changing his story.  Lauren is unhappy and they leave the prison - but Max is not falling for that trick again - he has paid for it and he wants to change and he wants Lauren to change as well.

Magically Spider finds Lauren and Max outside the prison and under police questioning Lauren admits she recently told a journalist all about Spider and Toyah and where they lived, so it seems it is not a far right group.  Despite everything Lauren later gets offered the Platts couch until she can find somewhere to live - David believes she would be at risk on the street as Max has admitted use of the salon.

Adam is planning a lunchtime gathering of the clans - one of those massive Barlow / Platt get togethers that were in my view the only reason for getting Adam and Sarah together!  Rovers lunchtime - be there or be square!  He confirms to Daniel that the intention is to announce the new spawn of the Devil Damon that will be joining the family.  Having invited Ken, Adam departs and Ken wisely speculates there are only three neatly alliterative reasons for the gathering - professional success, pastures new or pregnancy!

In Roy's Rolls Sarah immediately cancels the pregnancy pronouncement as she has not had her 12 week scan, so Adam agrees he will invent another excuse.  In the Rovers we find Ken, Peter, Steve, Tracy, Nick, Gail, Shona and David who is told by Tracy that he should be at home writing a book on how not to raise a right wing terrorist.  David then reveals that he a cold curry waiting to be consumed at home and this remains the conversation until Adam and Sarah arrive which allows Tracy to announce that Sarah is up the duff!  After big hugs Adam reveals that he won a trial and no Sarah is not pregnant.  Shona is not convinced.  The fizz is served and Daniel arrives pleased that he can now celebrate a new Barlow baby.  Tracy collects a fiver from Steve as she guessed right.  Ken then asks the inevitable question - who is the Daddy - or as Tracy puts it "Are you sure it's Adam's sprog?"  Sarah assures them all that it is Adam's and leaves.  Later Adam assures her that he wants to be a father and she will be an excellent mother just as with Harry and Bethany.

Text messages abound tonight - Gemma gets one from Henry Newton wanting to chat (about a job!).  However she does not tell Ches the news pretending it is from Glenda.  Beth continues her objectionable shouting from across the Street and a passing Kirk is asked by Ches if there is any chance that he could take Beth and stuff her mouth to shut her up!  In the factory Kirk makes Beth a cup of tea just the way she likes it - with 3 sugars, but she only takes 1 now!  But they talk and Kirk plays the Paul card - asking Beth to be easier on Gemma.  At the end of the day Beth goes to see Gemma and apologises.  She also offers to listen if Gemma ever wants to talk about Paul.  Beth invites her to the Rovers for a drink and Gemma accepts.  When they arrive they find Kirk and Ches deep in conversation and this allows Kirk to thank Beth.  And it turns out she has been dead miserable and Kirk admits he loves her and has been missing her.  As we can see they are re-united.

Dev ties to convince Aadi that he should smile at the customers as it grows sales.  Aadi is not convinced but is pleased to see Amy when she arrives with Asha and Nina (who are clearly partners now).  Aadi is mispricing some cans when Asha returns and he admits to his sister that he is hoping that there might be more than Amy being a mate - but Asha thinks now is not the time to pursue it - Amy is not ready for a relationship.  Dev catches them talking and he thinks there must be something wrong if they are not falling out!  Later in Speed Dahl Aadi tells Amy she can do some shifts in the shop (well they are an Evelyn down in case you had forgotten) and she hugs him.  He is pleased - but will it lead further?

Spider admits to Nick, Leanne and Simon that he has a pretty good idea who has abducted Toyah and it is not a far right group but someone wanting revenge on him - which narrows the possibilities but finding Toyah will not be easy.  So to help the police does anyone recognise the view above?  That is "Leyla" - so not Spider's ex.  And it is a remote car park as no-one will hear her banging on the side of the van - and she is gagged so cannot shout.  Apparently the lady is "Maggie" according to the credits and is played by Catrin Aaron.

OK last week I had a moan.  Can I therefore praise the team this week?  First up the interchanges between the Platt and Barlow families were exactly what I expected from the link between Sarah and Adam and the quips and lines were played well and were exactly what I wanted - it just did not go on long enough - but a wonderful ensemble piece.  But not just that tonight.  The ladies playing Asha and Nina were given time to show their relationship - long overdue - but it is those familial links which are important.  Similarly where Beth and Kirk in Speed Dahl started talking about wanting to be sharing a bed again moved from having a curry to having a curry to go to have to GO and now!  Ditch the abductions; the far right - tell us about the families and how they live together and play together (within reason - this is pre-watershed).  And that is without commenting on Sean wanting to sniff a bacon butty - and did I mention that plain clothes Craig was on the case with the returning DS Swain?  What a turnaround within a week - from despair to delight.  Which of course is why we watch!

And it is a long time since I had a "if only I could" and it never happened (reminder - Rita, Sharon, Jenny, Evelyn and Elaine in a Rovers lock-in) but I now have another one.  Can we get Evelyn, Sharon, Glenda, Cassie and Estelle (and the latter has to come back at some point - we all know that) together for at least one number?  They have all done big West End musicals so it ought to be easy!  I know - but we all have our fantasies.
