Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 8 August 2025

We might as well start at the end.  Aadi has spent the episode either in a drunken haze causing an argument with Theo, upsetting Lauren by finally telling her about how she became spiked at the party and generally annoying everyone else by not accepting sympathy from Amy and then rowing with Asha.  Aadi admits his spiking to Dev.  So Dev decides to put him out of his misery and having spoken to cousin Vikram sends him off to India. in recognition of his long suffering presence as a head swap.  (Obviously we all know Vikram is now better known as Jai and lives in Emmerdale).  Given that Aadi managed to be a business whizz kid who loves a spreadsheet and a complete disaster actually running the business when given a chance I feel his character was murdered by the showrunners and so he no longer needs corporeal existence.  No doubt he will return in some form at some future date.

As a result of the non-incident with Aadi Theo has a bad day.  He gets invited to assist the police with their enquiries - but Gary later pops into the station to say that they have it all wrong.  But have they?  An online search by Todd and Billy throws up a previous incident when Theo had some argy bargy from some guy down the chip shop who thinks he is Elvis who was accusing Danielle of pushing into a queue.  Apparently that was all a misunderstanding and it was all sorted out without a problem - but perhaps Theo is not as nice as you all thought - particularly as he has so far warned off James a few weeks ago and has made it clear to Billy his presence is unwelcome.  (I cannot forget Theo is really an undercover policeman either).  Theo also misses the meeting with Cafcass about his children so it is not going well.  Theo then finds out it was Dev who called the police earlier and gives him a warning as well.

After four years the production team have found the Kabin's interior and allowed Jenny a probably final display of her coquettish abilities as George gets his shirt wet sorting out her leaky O-ring which was almost causing a flood.  Did we know George had a toolbox and a reputation for fixing things for ladies?  Anyway I can only mourn Jenny's impending departure, the character was one I long awaited to re-appear and I feel her departure is a complete misstep.  George meanwhile had eggsciting but eggscruciating eggsperience with his air fryer providing far from eggscellent boiled eggs.

Brody is another walking disaster.  Whilst he wants nothing to do with Kit the latter keeps trying by arranging a lunch with Brody and Sarah whom Brody describes as some silly bird who's doing him.  Is Brody a write off?  Can he unlearn his parents' traits?  Sometimes he seems to grasp it - but think it is merely about his personal survival.  They are willing to help him - but does he want to know?  It seems not.  Later Brody does apologise to Sarah and she is surprised and thanks him.  Kit makes the point that he is trying to be a part of Brody's life - and the hidden meaning that it has to be a two way Street.

And even Amy knows Tracy is up to something.  Tracy is fed up tripping over Cassie and Steve snogging and suggests a family tea as an olive branch.  Over tea she offers to drop all claims on Steve's business and vice versa so they can get the divorce settled quickly and an amicable divorce.  Kenny is still not drinking any tea made by Cassie but seems to have accepted her semi-permanent presence which is something (she can solve crosswords though)!  Ken never did sell the house to Steve so the latter may be about to make himself homeless.

I am around for another couple of weeks before I take another holiday.  I think we managed an entire episode this evening without visiting the hospital or the police station (although we did have a visit from a car on the Street).  That was wrong - Dev would have accepted Gary's word and not called the police.

Coronation Street: Episode Review Friday 18 July 2025

Welcome.  Carla and Lisa have been well and truly gazumped by Debbie but in turn Ronnie, Ryan, Kev and old uncle Tom Cobbley an' all convince the property whizz kid also known as Debbie Webster that overpaying by £30k for a back street house of ill-repute with a bit of a history, with the deaths of Katie Harris, Charlie Stubbs and Geoff Metcalfe to my certain knowledge.  So by the end of these episodes Carla and Lisa are lined up as the buyers and Carla would be happy to accept an offer from Debbie for her flat which will means she is living much closer to her family.

Gary is getting the best of everything from Maria to get him better.  He has other ideas and spends the afternoon catching up on lost drinking time up to the point where when he stands up and then he falls down.  Gary must be ill as at one point he even offers to buy David Platt a drink and I have lost count of the run-ins between those two down the years.  Whilst not completely drunk Gary and Theo agree that the latter is happy to take on some scaffolding work for Gary's jobs.  Has Gary closed the secondhand furniture store as he has now returned to being a builder?  Gary is insistent he can get over being duped and beaten up by Lou without any help.  Everyone else knows differently.

I am sure you will all be pleased to know that Kit is on the mend and he did hear Sarah tell him that she was falling for him when she thought he was asleep.  He has some news for her - he is falling for her too.  He repairs relations with Bernie - Kit admits Sarah has given him a good talking to.  Sarah later pops round to see Bernie and updates her on Kit's recovery and that there might be a possibility of some form of relationship with Brody - but no promises at this point.

What looks like Brody in disguise is running away from the Corner Shop as fast as his legs can carry him with Aadi shouting at the disappearing thief whom we find has taken some £6k from the safe.  Which is odd as everyone always seems to pay with their card (remember cash is king).  There is some story for the police (Tink's old partner turns up) about not being able to get to the bank whilst short handed.  Bernie later walks in on Brody seeking to collect some cash and soon extracts the true story from Aadi.  Despite Aadi being the greatest business whizz kid on the block a couple of years ago he has managed to get the shop £6k in debt and has had to take a loan out.  He over ordered and his promotions did not move the stock, so it was out of date and it snowballed.  So he plans to claim on the insurance using the £6k which is upstairs under his bed to settle the loan and the insurance money to pay off Brody (who was supposed to do in the dark, not in daylight) and put the accounts for the shop straight.  Bernie does not like knowing but promises to keep schtum mainly for Brody's sake in view of the news from Saah earlier.  However one might argue that the expected outcome might not happen when Dev walks in at the end of the episode, his long holiday having ended.

There are a couple of sub-plots floating around the last one.  When the disguised Brody was running he went straight past Lisa who, instead of her usual gung ho action stands there stunned and lets the "criminal" abscond.  It seems that the poor dear is confused about Becky and what is right and what is wrong and she is not at all sure who she is at the moment, breaking down in tears for no good reason, and thinking she cannot ever go back out there again.

Additionally when the shop re-opens Lauren pops in to check on Aadi and admits that she likes Aadi and she was perhaps a little wrong last week and perhaps they could go on a date.  There is a suggestion of bowling but Aadi fluffs it, Asha comes in, Lauren goes to the Rovers and Asha reminds Aadi that he is playing with fire, poor lad cannot get it right.

Having hugged Bernie and Aadi, Dev sets his sights on Asha's share of the pizza and wants to know what's been going on - hands up for the rights to explain his own son has robbed his own business for the insurance payout?

I won't be here next week as I plan to be in Paris (Eurostar permitting) and I will not be here the following week as I should be in Clermont-Ferrand (assuming SNCF are up to snuff).  So I plan to return in three weeks' time.  Hopefully by then we will be seeing character driven plots and isshoos, police stations, hospitals and stunts will have been consigned to the dustbin and we return to stories of strong women in the back streets of Salford.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 20 June 2025

Debbie takes centre stage in this episode as we open with her in focus and the rest of the world out of focus as she stares through the blinds in the cafe and her "other worldliness" only comes to an end when Bernie touches her back points out that she has not paid for a coffee.  Debbie hands over a £10 note and tells Bernie to keep the change.  Debbie's phone goes and she hurries away to Speed Dahl where she arrives in a tizzy and finds Ronnie assisting Leanne prepare the food for the librarian awards at the Chariot Square Hotel (frankly this made about much sense as the stories around Millie).  Debbie was told that the conference room is flooded and cannot be used after a bath was left running overnight.  Leanne suggests that they simply bus everyone over from the hotel to Speed Dahl and hold the ceremony there rather than the food going the other way.  A little later Ryan is getting the PA working and Debbie is struggling with the constant noise as she tries to work.  Abi and Kev come in for a meal and Leanne says that is OK as the librarians are not arriving until 3pm.  Ronnie tries to find out why Debbie was not herself yesterday and says that he is worried about her.  Debbie is giving nothing away.  Subsequently Carl has replanned events to allow for the additional bus journey but Debbie cannot understand it until he explains it and then she asks about the buffet which has gone missing but part of the change over was to move to table service.  Then the room around Debbie goes out of focus and she collapses eventually into Kev's arms.

At number 11 Theo is snapping the bands on his wrist when Todd comes in and apologises for his behaviour the previous evening.  They have reconciled when Millie materialises.  Theo has said she can have the day off school, although she is reportedly "fine".  Apparently Danielle is a helicopter mother monitoring her condition and it was Danielle's worrying that led to Millie going to the hospital.  Theo suggests that Millie stay longer.  Later in the day Millie is lazing around and tells Todd that Theo has had to go to site to sort a problem.  Todd advises her that her mother knows far more about pregnancy than either he or Theo and her mother's support will be essential - so she might fare better at home.  Millie seems to accept this and goes to pack.  Once Theo returns Millie reappears and explains she has to go home because she is not welcome in this house (which is not quite what Todd said of course).  Another argument ensues until Theo is forced to admit he has been hurting himself again.  Millie simply observes that if her dad were at home all would be well.  Theo moans on and on and Millie blames Todd - Theo would be fine at home.  In a complete giveaway Millie, whilst on the phone to her brother Miles, then confirmed my beliefs and ordered herself a baby bump.  I like her less than her father.

Talking of which in a scene which beggars belief and demonstrates to me that Theo needs to be given a bum's rush very urgently was his appalling comment to Summer above.  Sorry but I think Danielle is a saint to have put up with him this long.

James is complaining that Laila gets through more costume changes than Lady Gaga to Dee Dee.  James thought she did well in the radio interview and he did notice that she called Laila "my little girl".  Dee Dee assures him that she does not mean anything by it - and James knows it is too easy to use the wrong words by accident.  Dee Dee is off to spread the message at the church over the campaign and similar and all is well between them.  Later Dee Dee returns and she has been doing some deep thinking and there need to be some changes.  She does not want Laila back and she plans to focus on the future - she has joined a women's group at the church - some like minded mates.  And so she now cannot wait to take Laila to church to see the colours and hear the music.  James says that Dee Dee can spend as much time as she like with Laila but he cannot agree to this "church" thing.  He does not want any of that for Laila.  It is a line in the sand.

In the café Aadi is waxing lyrical about spreadsheets to a bored looking Summer and Amy.  Bernie buts in and talks about finding out about herself and the world and inveighs against spreadsheets - the kids should be out on the town enjoying life.  Bernie approaches Aadi in the shop later suggesting he should be doing more at his age - it is Friday - go out and paint the town red or any other colour.  He says that there are no takers - and Bernie says they need encouragement.  The three pensioners later re-group and Aadi says that changes are afoot. They are to plan a mega party.  Aadi is serious - there is a need for some fun.  The three of them are to become the "fun".

Debbie slowly recovers and has to admit to the diagnosis of vascular dementia she has been given and Carl gives away that he has known.  Abi drives Debbie to hospital in Debbie's car whilst everyone else is annoyed with not knowing.  After assessment Debbie is told she has had a TIA and amongst other things she should not drive for the next month.  The medic goes away to make a referral to the TIA clinic and ensure that the surgery knows the situation so that her meds can be monitored.  Carl and Kev arrive at the hospital, apologising about the earlier argument to Abi but then Debbie is nowhere to be found.  Debbie is in the driver's seat of her car and after some looking in the mirror, drives away.  Carl soon confirms that there is no car in the car park.  She has done a runner and Kev blames Abi.  Back on the Street Ronnie and Ryan commence a woman search.  Abi wants to help Kev - but he remains concerned that Debbie did not tell him and yet she told the recently returned Carl.  Abi points out that Kev has his own problems at present.

Later Abi visits the garage and tells Carl that she loves her husband and she cares for Carl as a brother in law and nothing more.

Written by Alasdair Morrison and Carmel Morgan.  Directed by Matt Hilton.

Tonight was a Matt Hilton special as the directorial tricks were cranked up to 100% to deal with Debbie and we also had a different camera angle on some items such as this shot in the Rovers where it appears that Summer is as keen to show her legs as Sarah!  Lauren by the way is not quite creating the right atmosphere in the Rovers.

In other news Daisy Midgeley will be appearing as "Amber Gordon" in Ambridge next week although it is not yet clear what she is doing; oddly although Harrison Burns has left Ambridge for a mystery undercover role as someone called Theo his dulcet tones will also return to the Ambridge airways.  The soap crossovers get ever more complex.
