Top 25 Favourite Corrie Females - No. 1

1. BECKY MCDONALD (388 VOTES)

Duration: 2006-2012
Played by: Katherine Kelly
2012 character poll position (women): 4

In the course of six years, Becky went from a drug dealer who stole Roy and Hayley’s Morris Minor to a much loved Corrie character. She was brought in as an old friend of Kelly Crabtree who she soon framed for theft. She fled the street but returned and found refuge with the Croppers, but soon took advantage by stealing from the till. As always, Roy and Hayley forgave her and thus began a beautiful friendship.

Becky soon became the latest in a long line of strong Corrie women who were always knocked down but got up again still fighting. After a romance with Jason Grimshaw, she embarked on an affair with Steve McDonald who was at the time in a relationship with Michelle Connor. They were found out and after much trial and tribulations they finally married.

Becky and Steve’s marriage was marred with difficulties: Becky’s failure to conceive a child; Becky then buying her nephew Max and then losing him to Social Services; Becky looting from the Corner Shop; Becky’s drunken rampages and being framed by a police sergeant; and Tracy Barlow’s return and her aim at ruining the marriage.

But side by side with all this drama, Becky would star in humorous scenes involving Roy, Hayley, Ken Barlow and Blanche. By 2011, Becky and Steve’s marriage was over thanks to Tracy and although Becky tried to carry on with her life, Tracy was determined to ruin her life. She lied about Becky pushing her down the stairs which made her lose her and Steve’s twins. When Becky found the evidence, she was triumphant and revealed the truth on Steve and Tracy’s wedding day – after they were married.

Becky made a tearful farewell with new beau Danny and left for a new life in Barbados, having ruined Tracy’s scheming.

Were you a fan of Becky? Should she be at No.1?

Too many nights in the ’açienda?

I’m off work today and posting this blog as I embark on an exciting mission to Manchester (more on this in due course). Hopefully, it won’t be a Blue Monday!

It was fun on Friday night as we went back to the 80s for Beth and Kirk’s wedding. The highlight for me was this exchange between Tim and Norris as the bridal party stepped out of Number 5:

Tim: Takes you back does it Nozzer?
Norris: Oh the decades all blur into one for me if I’m honest.
Tim: Oh is that right Nozzer? The 80s were a blur, were they? Too many nights in the ’açienda?

Brilliant! But despite Nozzer gurning his face off while Beth showed off her Madonna costume (Madge made her first ever UK performance at the Haçienda in 1984, fact fans), it’s safe to assume the Kabin Killjoy would have given the Haçienda a wide berth during its 80s heyday.

Tim, on the other hand, was no doubt a regular. You didn’t need to read to have a good time at Manchester’s famous nightclub – top, sorted, MAD FER IT.

The Haçienda opened in 1982 and was a joint venture between Factory Records and New Order. It was financed mainly by New Order record sales. Legendary acts such as The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Happy Mondays and Oasis all played there – as well as New Order, obviously.

The Haçienda provided an early UK platform for acid house and gave rise to the whole “Madchester” scene. It also laid the foundations for rave culture and today’s electronic dance music.

While it changed modern music, the Haçienda famously ran at a loss. New Order bassist, Peter Hook, has claimed the club lost up to £18 million in its final years. When gangs and drugs took over by the 1990s, the dream had turned sour. The Haçienda closed in 1997 and was demolished in 2002.

I never got to the Haçienda. I was 15 when it shut its doors (the same age as the club itself), so there wasn’t much I could’ve done about that. But this quirk of history does upset me – especially as it’s something my older sister has over me. She went to Manchester Uni during the peak of Britpop (94-98) and managed to frequent the Haçienda before it croaked its last.

The site was converted into flats, of course – “The Haçienda Apartments” now stand at 11-15 Whitworth Street West; the coolest address in Manchester and one I often visit in homage to what was an iconic cultural landmark that had a lasting impact on millions of people far beyond the boundaries of Manchester.

I often wonder which Corrie characters would have spent their weekends raving it up at the Haçienda. While it’s difficult to be certain (as I’ve said – I wasn’t there), here are my Top 10 most likely Weatherfield contenders to have had Fac 51 membership:

1. Peter Barlow

Peter would have been 17 when the Haçienda opened and already in the navy. But if Ken ever invited his son to Weatherfield while he was on shore leave (unlikely, I know), a trip to the Haçienda would have been a must for this hedonistic sailor – especially if this T-shirt is anything to go by:

2. Liam Connor

Liam was a proper TopBoy with swagger and effortless Manc charm. Remember when he installed a jukebox in his gaff and had to decide which tunes to have on it? New Order made the cut. I also recall Liam in the Rovers naming “Fools Good” by The Stone Roses as his favourite song. A definite Haçienda man – era: the mid 90s.

3. Rob Donovan

A couple of years younger than Liam, they would have moved in similar circles given the relationship between Carla and Liam’s older brother, Paul. In planning his doomed marriage to Tracy Barlow, Rob proved himself a fan of Oasis, The Roses and The Prodigy (for all your rave/techno needs). He would have turned 18 two years before the Haçienda closed and so could have sneaked in just in the nick of time (and before his time in the nick).

4. Karl Munro

Talking of firestarters, Karl would almost certainly have been found burning down the house at Hac 51. He was rarely seen wearing anything but Pretty Green (Liam Gallagher’s label) during his time on The Street. I met John Michie at Labour Party Conference (2013) just as his final scenes were about to air. I asked about the Pretty Green clothes. I was impressed when he told me this was something he added to the character – because even though he didn’t have much money, Karl was the kind of bloke who would have spent what he did have on clothes (amongst other vices). Karl would have been 19 when the Haçienda launched. My verdict is that he was there from opening night onwards.

5. Tracy Barlow

I quite like Tracy at the moment. I warmed to her when she walked down the aisle to “Waterfall”. And when it all went tits up, she sat and listened to The Stone Roses on repeat for a week. She’s got taste. And she didn’t think much of the 80s tunes that Beth chose for her wedding day. My view – Haçienda goer: late doors.

6. Beth Tinker

Though her wedding playlist veered towards the cheesier end of the 80s spectrum, I reckon the misspent youth that Beth sometimes alludes to would have involved some mad ones at the Haçienda. Perhaps this is why she gets on so well with Tracy. Beth’s likely Hac heyday – early to mid 90s.

7. Tim Metcalfe

His banter with Nozzer is all the proof we need. And that line on Friday night is another reason why Tim is brilliant – and a nice touch by the writers.
8. Becky Granger

I don’t have much to base this on, except for the fact that Becky was no stranger to a big night out. Technically she would have been underage when the Haçienda closed. But I don’t think that would have stopped her.

9. Steve McDonald

A teenage tearaway when he first arrived in Weatherfield, Steve was always getting into mischief in his younger days. I find it hard to believe that Steve and Andy never went up town for a night at the Haçienda. I just hope that poor Steve can experience the good times again.

10. Owen Armstrong

Age wise, this makes sense. Born in 1958, Owen was almost certainly still going for it in the early 80s before settling down and finally getting out of the game with the birth of Izzy in 1986. Recently, Owen could be heard singing along in the kitchen to “There She Goes” by The Las, so he's into his music. I reckon Owen went once or twice in the early days.

And that’s my 10. It was a narrow miss for Lloyd Mullaney. Lloyd is more into Northern Soul but as a lover of music and all round cool guy, it's probable he would have made the short journey from Liverpool to Manchester to see what was going on.

Which other Corrie characters were cool enough to have hit the Haçienda? And who out there on this blog was lucky enough to have been there?

I would like to give an honorary mention to Luke Britton. Luke was probably still in nappies when the Haçienda closed. But it’s clear from Kirk’s stag do that Manc vibes run through Luke’s veins. It was funny watching him try to get the party started in Tyrone’s front room – “This is quality mate, just wait for the drop” said Luke as he enjoyed his one-man rave while Craig googled Stag Party Games. It was a genuine case of M.V.I.T.A. (Manchester Vibes In The Area).

Anyway, that’s it from me. My train is pulling into Manchester Piccadilly and I’m in the mood for a party. I’d better find myself a double espresso and get down The Haçienda Apartments. Top Buzz mate.

Becky Granger - was redemption a mistake?

Katherine Kelly will be leaving Coronation Street fairly soon, and I never thought I'd say this, but I'll be sorry to see her go.

I really liked her as Kelly Crabtree's skanky mate, but quickly went off the character when she got involved firstly with "Royston and 'Ayles" and then "Stevie-babes". The Corrie team seemed determined to "rehabilitate" Becky, but sadly they went way OTT. It was completely overdone, cloying and nauseating, and in my opinion a total mistake. For quite a spell, Becky seemed to dominate every episode and had me literally reaching for the remote. And the "Kylie and Maxie" storyline was awful, awful, awful.

However, I've warmed to her again since she split up with Steve, left the Rovers and started working in the factory. Her scenes with Kirk have been funny, and her scenes with Tracy Barlow would be good, if (I'm sorry to say it) Kate Ford was a better actress. She's also gelling well with Sylvia, Roy's mum. All in all, I'm finding the character much more interesting and watchable now, just as she's leaving! I'd very much like to see Becky with a juicy exit story, because Katherine Kelly really does deserve it.

Anyone else have a view on this?

Katherine Kelly to leave Coronation Street

ITV have confirmed that Katherine Kelly will leave Coronation Street next year, the exact details of her exit are as of yet, unknown.

I personally am happy she is leaving, when Becky came into the show, she was interesting and unpredictable, when she moved in with the Croppers, she became lovable.

When she moved into the Rovers, she then became repetitive and boring. Constantly messing up Steve's life for her own gain, I hope we see a spark of the original Becky when she goes.

Fat Brenda's Cream Horn

Well loves it's time for another cab eye view of Weatherfield courtesy of Aunty Bren.

I've had Eddie on the night shift with me this week and he's been ever so worried about his Gary's brush with the law. Apparently he gave some punter a right going over after he was horrible to Izzy. Between me and you, if there's one girl who doesn't need protecting it's Izzy. I tried to talk to her last week and told her I could sympathise about her being in a wheelchair because of the time I had an ingrowing toenail removed and had to use a walking stick for a week; she gave me a right gob-full! I reckon Gary's soft on her but he's been fandangling with that awful Kylie Granger girl, I think I'd rather face the Taliban than Kylie Granger!

The best news for me has been Eileen showing off her dazzling 'figures' for Owen, and failing to bag her man. I mean, come on, she does the same thing every time; puts on the Superdrug hair mousse to create that 'just been sleeping rough' look, wears a bit of lippy and tries to intoxicate her prey with a bottle of plonk from Dev's! Alas, it wasn't meant to be and Owen ended up getting a personal lock-in with the lovely Liz, I'd kill for her legs. Eileen has handled the situation like she always does, with a kebab, tons of chocolate and a large helping of bitterness. Still, at least she doesn't have to work nights like me, then she'd really have something to complain about.

Back to that Kylie again though; fancy making at pass at Steve! She's trouble that one, you mark my words, and if you think that kiddy's going to make her mend her ways then I'm afraid you're softer in the head than Becky! Twice she's tried to take our petty cash from the cab office telling us Steve sent her. She must think I'm daft!

So that's me then loves, I'm off home now for a Findus Crispy Pancake and a week of Jeremy Kyle on me Sky+. Remember, if you need a cab then just call Street Cars and I'll try to make sure it isn't Eddie who picks you up, he always goes the longest route so he can charge more and I've had enough of it!

If you want regular updates from the cab office then you can follow me on the twitter into-net web or your orange apple hi-phone here. See you next week for another generous helping of Fat Brenda's Cream Horn.

Becky Granger's new look

She's come a long way from the strung-out, homeless, thief that she started out as, and now Becky Granger's been given a new look.

Katherine Kelly's new bobbed haircut has been written into Coronation Street. Scriptwriters incorporated it into the image change Becky will undergo as she and Steve set about trying to adopt.

Katherine explained: "She borrows Claire Peacock's clothes for a while because she wants to look good for the social worker coming round. We thought it was a good opportunity for her to have a slight image change."

Shock news for Becky McDonald

There's sad news for Becky McDonald next week on Coronation Street when she finds out that her mum has died.

And as Becky struggles to come to terms with her grief, what does feckless husband Steve go and do? He only chats up Kelly Crabtree, that's what, leaving Becky alone. She eventually breaks down and confides in Roy and Hayley.

Could this be the beginning of the end for Becky and Steve?

Becky vs Michelle: you decide

In yesterday's blog post about the ruination of Michelle Connor, someone mentioned that Becky was in danger of being over-exposed as a character as well. I sort of agreed with that but with reservations. I got thinking about the character, as you do, and I decided that there's a vast difference between the characters of Becky and Michelle and how each has been handled by the Powers That Be. Up to now, it's been a fine line.

There have been a lot of major storylines featuring Becky but, at least to me, she doesn't feel over used and I'm not tired of her nor am I starting to dislike her. I realise that liking any character is purely subjective, but she's always been one of my favourites whereas I was always kind of meh about Michelle but am now starting to actively dislike her.

Anyway, all that aside, I've written another essay along the same lines, examining the differences between the two characters and why Becky *could* be in danger of over exposure and why, so far, I don't think she has been. Agree? Disagree? Meh?

Katherine Kelly on confidence and Corrie

The Sunday Mirror Celebs magazine have a spread on Katherine Kelly, who plays Coronation Street's Becky Granger, today. There's not much in it we don't already know but it's a nice enough read with some pictures of Katherine dolled up to the nines. Have a look here.

Praising four Corrie actors

Of course, it's only my humble opinion but isn't that what a blog is for? While watching Friday's and Monday's episodes, I was riveted to the screen watching two couples, four actors who put in platinum performances. The writing and dialogue was as good as Corrie gets, for me anyway. The actors more than did the writing justice. I want to watch it over and over. I'm talking about Simon Gregson, Katherine Kelly, Craig Charles and Bev Callard. Craig Charles in particular surprised me. We usually only see Lloyd as a jokester, somewhat goofy, sometimes serious but not usually overly emotional and with the breakup with Liz, we finally saw some of that. Craig really made his character's feelings utterly believable. Everyone else was equally great and I *had* to write about it. As always, the long and not very short of it is over here.

Is Becky Granger a Coronation Street icon?

The Radio Times this week have a Coronation Street barmaids special with a picture of Becky in a Manet painting on the front cover. The tag line under the picture reads "The making of a Coronation Street icon".

Do you think Becky Granger deserves to be called a Corrie icon? Isn't iconic status deserved only after many years, decades even, or does Becky deserve icon status already?

Radio Times tribute to Becky Granger

Look out for the cover of the Radio Times this week as Coronation Street barmaid Becky Granger is transformed into a Manet painting.

Radio Times celebrates Becky behind the bar of the Rovers Return with a special cover paying tribute to Manet’s famous painting, ‘A bar at the Folies-Bergere’. Plus there are interviews with Katherine Kelly and actresses who have played previous barmaids Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) and Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn).

You'll have to buy the Radio Times if you'd like to read the interview but their website has some other good Corrie stuff - click here.

Is Slug's reformation genuine?

He doesn't 'alf clean up well. Slug, that is... or I guess I should be calling him Neil. Slug was Becky's boyfriend and partner in crime a few years ago but when they got drunk and she was persuaded to help him nick Roy and Hayley's car and then stranded her out on the road, she finally dumped him. She'd disappointed the Croppers after everything they'd done for her and they were more important to her than her greasy druggie boyfriend.

"Slug" was a good name for him back then too, he really was creepy and disgusting. Well, now Slug seems to have cleaned himself up, pulled his act together, got a job and is working towards being respectable. Has he really changed? Maybe... but the spoilers say he's going to be blackmailed by that corrupt and bitter cop, Cst. Hooch (with a name like that, could he be any other sort?) and it's going to cause havoc for Becky again.

What I want to know is, is this turnaround of his life genuine and down the road, Hooch just drags him down again into his scheme to get revenge on Becky, or has that revenge scheme already started and this whole "clean up" routine is a scam as well? I'm going with the latter. Watch this spot.
