Beverley Callard to star in new stage show The Thunder Girls

Beverley Callard, who plays Liz McDonald in Coronation Street, will be playing the role of Roxanne in The Thunder Girls this September at The Lowry in Salford.

The Thunder Girls is the debut Novel and play by Melanie Blake. It's a glamorous epic about the reunion of an 80s girl band torn apart by jealousy and brutal betrayal.

Ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors when legendary bands meet up to discuss a reunion?  What’s really going on behind the hugs and kisses at those reunion press conferences?

THE THUNDER GIRLS were a successful ‘80s girl band until lead singer, Chrissie, sensationally quit the Band to pursue a solo career taking with her, Rick, the Band’s manager.  Chrissie broke the Girl Code as Rick was also the boyfriend of Band mate, Roxanne.

At the reunion dinner from hell, Chrissie tries to reunite the band to salvage herself from bankruptcy after being conned out of her fortune by her toyboy husband.

But is there a price which can heal the wounds? Or maybe some friendships never die, even if you want them to? 30 years later, can lightning strike twice?

Coronation Street Blog Interview: Beverley Callard

When you sit down to chat with the actor who plays one of your favourite Coronation Street characters, and that character is (in)famous for their (ahem!) style, it’s an added treat when they greet you in full costume. When I travelled to ITV in Manchester with fellow Coronation Street blogger Martin Leay to get the low down on this year’s Christmas on the cobbles, nothing could have prepared me for seeing Beverley Callard enter the room in an unholy trinity of lycra, leather and suede. Involuntary squeals of delight erupted at the sight of her garish ensemble, and she seemed as amused with it as we were as she sat down to chat all things Liz McDonald. I couldn’t avert my eyes from this outfit, and nor did I want to, but if you don’t wish to see any spoilers, it’s probably best that you look away now.

We all know that Liz and Johnny Connor have slept together, Jennybradley Connor has found out, and all three now work side by side in The Rovers. What could possibly go wrong? We’re aware that Jenny’s suspicions about them cheating behind her back are rife, as she has been tracking both via a mobile app which has led her to erroneously believe her suspicions are true. Her revenge so far has included ensuring Eileen catches Liz after standing her friend up for Mike Thornberry, and setting Liz up on an escort site which promptly yields a punter. With Jenny’s revenge and suspicion escalating by the episode, where will this all lead?

In my recent interview with Sally Ann Matthews, we discussed how Liz and Johnny were taking Jenny at her word that everything was fine after their secret was revealed, and were therefore acting normally. Asked if Liz thinks everything’s okay with Jenny, Beverley echoes these sentiments. “Beverley doesn’t, but Liz definitely thinks that,” she says. “This is how I justify Liz being like this; I think because they slept together once, and after that, even though he wanted more, she turned him down. I think she knew it was a mistake. I think she has got a great fondness for him because they go back so many years, and so because of that, it was quite easy to fall into that situation. But, Liz has never been involved with a married person before,” she notes. “I think she beats herself up about that. I think Jenny most definitely is not her favourite person, and never will be, but I think she feels guilty about it. And, I think she truly believes, naively so, or stupidly so, that Jenny has forgiven her.” Beverley continues, “I think she thinks Jenny is up herself and has got ideas above her station and she wouldn’t be mates with her really, but I think she thinks, ‘well I’m back in the Rovers, and this really is my home and it will work out’ - until it doesn’t...”

So, is Liz any way interested in Johnny at this point? “She really isn’t,” Beverley replies, “and I think she thinks Johnny has got that message, so Jenny will have got that message.”

Meanwhile, Jenny is plumbing new depths with the tracking, and her drinking is proving dangerous to more than herself. Speaking of her placement of Liz on an escort site, and the fact that a punter turned up, Beverley says, “I have to tell you, when I read those scripts I was like, ‘why on earth would they think that?” We all roar laughing. “Maybe he’s into lycra” she jokes, adding “you’d have to be a bit, wouldn’t you.” Beverley explains that she’s convinced Hannah is responsible, thus deflecting culpability away from Jenny. But, whether or not Jenny is found out remains to be seen.

With her spark for Johnny confirmed extinguished, Beverley says “I’m hoping they keep Louis Emerick, who plays Mike. We’ve been mates in real life for thirty years, Louis and I, and we’ve actually played together as a couple years ago. It’s great he’s come in.” I was thrilled to see his recent return to the cobbles, and wholeheartedly agree with Beverley. I think Louis has already brought so much to this part, the chemistry between them is fantastic, and long may it continue.

In scenes which aired earlier this month, we saw Liz hide under the table in the Bistro having jilted Eileen for Mike when she’s not only supposed to be meeting up with her to plan a holiday, but she’s agreed to remain single. In the hilarious scene where Liz is discovered by her friend and identified by her stilettos peeking out from underneath, Beverley explains, “I said, it’s got to be an iconic Liz shoe, it’s got to be really good.” Well, the costume department excelled themselves. I can only imagine how much fun it is dressing a character like Liz. Beverley also described with great hilarity how she lay on the floor in her lycra dress, wrapped in her own check shirt. “I’m under the table sticking my leg out and I’m literally going, ‘are we checking that then? Can I come out now? Are we going for another take?’”

Back to The Rovers now, and Beverley is asked if Liz still feels that the pub is hers. “Oh I think Liz would definitely think that,” she says. Even though she loves working in the Medical Centre with Louiza Patikas who plays Moira Pollock, Beverley adds, “Liz thinks she will be back in the Rovers at some point. I mean, have you seen the Rovers living room on the TV? What the hell is that all about? I think Liz would buy it back at some point, and you know the panelling that they’ve got? She’d paint it burgundy and she’d have lycra curtains or something, wouldn’t she.” Beverley adds, “It’s got to look like a back street pub, hasn’t it. She would think, ‘Why are they doing it like this? They’re wrong!’ but that adds to the magic of Liz, you know?”

Liz has had a tough year, in the main down to a plot in which Jim returned with a girlfriend, Hannah Gilmore, who posed as their deceased daughter Katie to con her out of money. Speaking about the storyline, Beverley says, “Obviously you can imagine when they said, ‘Actually you’re dead daughter returns’, we were thinking, ‘What? Well I’m not sure about this.’ But, in the end I think, and certainly the viewers seemed to think, it worked well. We were quite skeptical about it. But, I think the way they wrote it, and the twist, was just brilliant.”

Beverley says she was delighted to have Charles Lawson back in the role of Jim. Noting that there is always a will they/won’t they whenever he returns, I ask Beverley if she is disappointed that this may no longer be possible given that what he has done this time would be hard to come back from – are they finished forever? “I honestly don’t think they are finished forever” she says, “because I think the way Charlie and I played it towards the very end – they were coming together again before it was discovered. And he played it with a sense of remorse and that he really did love Liz. And so I think, and I really hope, that they will try and bring him back. I think maybe he’ll somehow get the money to give back to Liz and then I think it will begin again.” She adds, “I don’t know how she could forgive that, but I think there is this chemistry.”

Asked what her hopes are for Liz in the New Year, considering this one has been tough on her character, Beverley says, “I absolutely love doing it but it would be quite nice to have a bit of comedy soon, hopefully. But I don’t know whether that’s going to be the case, I don’t know.” She adds, “It would be good to get a little bit of levity, I think. Yeah, I would like that.”

When she’s not working hard at being the iconic Liz, Beverley loves painting and decorating. “I’m actually doing a course in polished plaster. You think I’m mad, I am aren’t I?” she says, laughing. Describing one job she’s done, she says “I used four different colours on a wall, and the wall’s almost sixty feet high, and I was hanging from ladders and all this – I absolutely love it.”

Whatever 2019 might hold for Liz, Beverley is looking forward to beginning it as part of the cast of the Rocky Horror Show.

As expected, Beverley Callard is a delight to interview, and while she may be a world away from her character in many respects, she certainly sparkles with Liz’s sense of adventure and love of fun.

Let’s hope she gets the comedy she’s hoping for in her fishnet Christmas stocking!

Bev Callard interview: Johnny, baby Susie and the return of Big Jim

How has Liz been feeling about the situation with her and Johnny?
Liz has been really conflicted, she has had a few men in her time but she has never had an affair with a married man. She is very moral but she has really fallen for Johnny, she has tried to tell him that she has no feelings for him to try and put a stop to it.

What are her thoughts about his fight for baby Susie?
She understands what he is going through but she really does think that Susie should be with Eva. He knows he is angry with Jenny for saying that so she is trying to be careful about what she says. She had told him about Susie falling off the sofa and that went terribly wrong for her so she knows she has to watch what she says. It is tricky because she wants to support him.

Does she feel guilty about him telling her how angry he is with Jenny?
Yes she does, she doesn’t take any pleasure in him talking about the problems with his marriage. She feels uncomfortable about it.

What happens when Susie goes missing?
Susie has gone missing from her crib and Johnny is also missing then Liz discovers that her keys for the pub are missing. She tells Kate and when Kate and Jenny search Johnny’s flat they realise he hasn’t taken his MS Medication with him. Everyone is really worried.

Is Liz surprised to hear from Johnny?
Yes she is but she is glad that he has called her as she was very worried about him.

What does she do?
She knows that she has to go and see him as she thinks she is the best person to persuade him to come back. The police are looking for him and Eva is all over the media with her police appeal so time is against her.

What does she say to him when she gets there?
When she gets there he totally breaks down, he can’t bear the thought of losing his granddaughter. She tries to convince him that he has to give himself up but he just won’t listen.

Does Liz realise she is going to get into trouble for what she is doing?
Yes she is in a really difficult position because she wants to help Johnny but she knows he is in a lot of trouble. She knows it is only a matter of time before people put two and two together, as she has also now disappeared, and think that she was in on it all along.

How does she feel when he asks her to run away with him?
She is shocked when he suggests running away to Spain with him and they can bring up Susie together, she knows in her heart that is just not going to be possible but Johnny is not thinking straight at all.

Have you enjoyed this storyline?
I’ve really enjoyed it, I am very lucky to be working with such great actors. We’ve seen a different side to Liz and that’s great.

Do you prefer the high drama or the comedy?
What’s great about playing Liz is that I get to do both, I love working in the medical centre, sometimes me and Louisa who plays Moira can’t keep a straight face.

Are you looking forward to Jim coming back?
I am so excited about working with Charlie again, Liz and Jim have such a complex relationship and I am really looking forward to the storyline surrounding his return.   More details here on Jim McDonald's return.

Liz back in the Rovers - Yay or Nay?

It's a rhetorical question, well, for this fan anyway and I'm going to say right now it's a big fat YAY from me.

The Rovers without Liz running it is like Betty's Hot without the Pot, like Newton without the Ridley.

I love the way that she's wormed her way back behind the bar even though Toyah and Peter don't really want, or need her there, but they're both too scared to sack her. This reminds me of something Betty Turpin once did, or could I be misremembering things?  Anyway, I love it that she's back from behind the counter at the medical centre to behind the bar of the pub.

So what do you say, Corrie fans. Should Liz take over the Rovers again, and who knows, with Tom Ridley's help she just might.

The Light and the Dark on the Cobbles

First of all, the light...

This stunning piece of comedy gold represents much needed light on the cobbles. It concerns Liz and her belief that Peter and Toyah have invited her back to serve behind the bar at The Rovers.Peter has sent a note to Steve asking him to come back to the pub after he was barred. The problem is that Peter assumed that Steve would receive the note but hadn't considered its ambiguous nature, nor the possibility that Liz would get hold of it and assume she was invited back.

Bouyed up by Tyrone's comment that a bit of glamour was needed behind th bear and the Liz, had 'still got it' Liz handed in her notice at The Medical Centre in readiness to take up her job offer at the Rovers.

Launching herself behind the bar, she thrusts her bag at Peter and gets stuck in. She informs her new employers that she is doing a 'freebie' as she transitions'  into her old role.

Toyah blames Peter for the mix up and tells him he should be the one to let liz know of the misunderstanding . Peter tries to worm his way out of it by flattering Toyah, telling her that she is braver than he is. So, reluctantly, Toyah has a go and fails spectacularly. Liz is so excited to be back 'in her own pond' that Toyah cannot get a word in. As she tries to tell Liz that there has been no job offer, Liz interrupts, glowing with happiness, 'Can I just say that I feel I've come home.' and 'Im so happy to be back behind the bar, where I belong.' An exasperated Toyah gives up.

The brilliance of the piece stems from Beverley Callard's excellent comic timing. Once again, I have to repeat that in the soaps, and in Corrie in particular, some of the acting is as good as any to be found on the stage in the West End.

Now to the dark...

Mel has successfully gained access to the Platt household. At first it was hard to tell if her need was genuine, but after a call to Nathan, in his prison cell, awaiting trial, and the words, 'Im in' all confusion ends.

So should we pity Mel or should we despise her for her playing on Bethany's sweet nature, naivety and gullibility? Mel is clearly captured under  Nathan's spell and her manipulation of Bethany is an attempt to stop Bethany giving evidence against those who so vilely abused her.

Mel, is an interesting character in that she must realise what Nathan does, how he tricks girls into abuse by telling them he loves thank and that by sleeping with his friends, the girl is making him happy. It is a twisted, distorted world, but because Nathan is such an arch manipulator and, on the surface, initially, an attentive boyfriend, who claims to be in love with the girl. Surely then Mel knows this, yet seems willing to be duped by Nathan again, believing that he loves her. Just how damaged is Mel?

When Bethny tells Mel how foolish she was to believe that Nathan loved her and how long it took her to realise that he was merely using her, an agonising expression crossed Mel's face, suggesting that she does actually know, deep down that he is using her, but damaged as she is, has to believe it's true. It is chilling to see the wreckage that a man such as Nathan can create,

There is though, for the viewer the safety net that villains in soap operas always get their comeuppance. Heartbreakingly, in the real world, I suspect that in the majority of cases, there exists no such safety net.
