Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 5 September 2025

Tonight the Corrie wheel of fortune whirled around.  So headlines only tonight.  Tia Wardley appeared - I am 100% certain that she is not the real thing as Inspector Costello gave her a pay off for her acting skills.  Whilst Lisa lapped up the news that Becky was not bent I am hoping that DC Green is not as gullible as DS Swain and can guess that someone, somewhere knows that he is being hunted down.   After all "Tia Wardley" has no idea who Inspector Costello is.  However all is rosy in the world of the newly engaged couple - they even received a visit from the national treasure that is Evelyn who took Frida Kahlo to hospital (it is a long story and I do not want to bore you all).

Is Billy / Theo / Todd a triangle of some description?  Billy buys some nonsense from Theo that he is having therapy, even though he does not know when the next appointment will be.  Billy tells Todd and so before we know it Todd and Theo are as one again.  Theo tells Gary he did not attend the session as he cannot tell strangers about his problems so he and Gary go on a drinking spree and yet return remarkably sober, so what was the point?    Gary thought it was too loud and Theo thought it was too dark.   And Todd still thinks Theo is getting treatment for his problems.

Christina is behaving like a lost soul without her Dom.  Sadly George is falling for the flattery and picks up the bill and will shortly be fleeced for everything which Glenda has not had from him.  Glenda please rescue your brother.  Christina is dangling the fishing line well baited and before long George will take a bite.

Am I sounding jaded this evening?  The programme has always had a huge gem in Debbie Webster since she returned and now we are expected to tolerate her eventual decline and departure.  So why?  Tonight she did an acapella solo with Gracie Fields "Sally in our Alley" (and it is long before Sally Webster / Metcalfe ever existed) plus a superb lecture on re-inventing a chorus for the social media era.  Whilst I despise what is being done to Debbie this is the Coronation Street we should be seeing - character driven stories about those we love (sadly just the wrong person).  Anyway in the short term Glenda and Debbie are going to team up to form a new choir.

Elsewhere you might think that Betsy is chasing Brody her next door neighbour but Lisa observes that she would rather her daughter was not in a relationship with Kit's son - when Kit is in earshot!  Brody and Dylan are trying to half inch cars but they try to do it on their own doorstep and James threatens to turn them over to the law.  Carl extricates them and it later looks like Betsy might find Dylan more acceptable than Brody.  Has everyone forgotten that Joanie or Shanice (sorry I cannot remember which one) has been taken into care and someone should be trying to rescue her?

Apologies if the update is a little left field.  I might have had a libation or two and I am off to Spain on Sunday for a holiday so will not be here next week.

Tonight was written by Jonathan Harvey and Julie Jones.  Directed by Matthew Peacock.  Can I thank Jonathan Harvey for his observations tonight on hand-dived scallops?  It is far too pretentious for the Bistro.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 29 August 2025

Welcome to this review.  I open with Carl who commences by saying I love you to Abi before she heads off to the sun and gets her to promise that she will not sleep with her husband whilst she is away and to leave finding the money for Tracy'luv to him.  He then spends the episode dodging and diving leaving poor Ty to assess the brakes on Ollie's car which was given an MoT by another garage which Fiona uses; surprise, surprise those brakes are way dodgy, who would have guessed it.  Carl has an exchange with James in the Rovers whilst skiving about it being good to get and hot and sticky in a gym session.  Without an obvious leadup that has indicated that Carl has the slightest interest in men or indeed wants anyone other than poor Abi we get the picture above after Tracy once again attempts to return to evil self and trap him.  Coronation Street should be driven by strong consistent characters living their lives on the backstreets of Manchester.  As I said about Abi recently I have trouble believing that people behave like this.  James leaves a message saying that he would be up for more fun in future.  Carl reads it then tells Abi to enjoy quality time with her boys and he will be waiting for when she returns.

The Kabin is back again with Jenny pursuing Christina and Dom online as she convinces herself that they are about to fleece George in some way.  Steve has to be served bon bons by Rita who is also on duty.  Later Jenny thinks George and Christina are exchanging amusing texts (they are but not with each other) which leads to her absolute conviction that there is no body in the coffin and to prove it she enters the undertakers and removes the lid of the coffin - which obviously does contain Dom's body.  Jenny is left with egg on her face.  George's romance was going so well with Cheryl he gets dumped by text, never having actually met her.  To calm Christina down George magics up a bottle of brandy and they steady their nerves following the earlier ructions.  And before you know it Christina is flirting with George, not exactly the grieving wife as Jenny observed earlier.  Christina then takes Cheryl's place for dinner at Speed Dahl.

Asha skips work using different excuses for different people.  In the cafe Summer, Amy and Nina all say how good her job must be, how brave she is, how well she is doing and how important saving lives must be.  She does not tell them how she is feeling about the stresses.  She crosses paths with DS Swain later who asks if she is feeling better and offers to listen if Asha wants to talk.  Sienna tracks her down in the Rovers where she appears to be feeling much better.  Asha seems reluctant to talk.  Sienna warns her she looks like she is crumbling and that she does not want that to happen.  Asha pleads not to be reported and that she will sort herself out.  However this is a last warning.

In a rare scene involving Tim and Abi the latter reveals she is being wound up by Tracy who is being her usual charming self with Tim saying that she will have forgotten her troubles once she is sitting in the sun holding hands with Kev.  (For those not aware in another world these two are married).

Needless to say that Billie has advised the police of the assault by Miles; he did try to talk to Miles but achieved nothing which made his mind up  {Given the education of children these days do any of them really consider homosexuality a problem - this story might have worked 40 years ago but now?).  This rather overshadows Summer Spellman's 21st (she has been around in various guises since 2017) - a girl with more fathers than I have had hot dinners this week.  Given she has her degree why is she not at work?  Miles apologises to Billy at the party in the Bistro and then gets invited by DS Swain to answer a few questions down the station.  I am surprised Billy making the report - surely he has heard about turning the other cheek?  Obviously not.  During the interview Miles reveals that he will not be involved with Noah any longer and Danielle is on board with that.  Theo gets ever more objectionable in that he rails at Billy about seeking to get his son a criminal record calling Billy a self-righteous prat.  Later Theo uses it as a weapon to tell Todd to choose between him and Todd which Todd conveys at the end of the episode saying that he and Billy have nothing to discuss and that Billy needs to stay out of his way.

Due to holidays I may well not be here next week and I certainly will not be here the following week.  I hope by the time I return that something will have changed.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 15 August 2025

After months of not being mentioned Dorin turned up tonight so that Steve could lose him playing hide and seek.  The whole world thought he had gone off in the broken fridge but luckily he was hiding in the back yard outhouse from which he emerged to swear Carl to secrecy.  Hope does not know her phone contains a picture compromising Carl and Abi as well as Ty's backside so when it falls out of a biscuit tin into a sink of water from which it might emerge working she is not amused.  Dorin was then allowed out of the shed and everyone, except Abi, was thankful he had been found - she worked out that Carl knew where he was and cannot trust him again.  However given his failure to look after Dorin Steve is homeless.  Hope is pretty tech savvy and it will all be backed up in the cloud, although she says not.  Hope however does not trust Carl - she thinks he did it on purpose - so at least she has something right.

Now that Ryan is living with Aunty Carla he can be told her secrets such as her intention to propose to Lisa.  She sets up the ring in the glass of champagne with Glenda for later.  Along the way we are reminded of Ty's proposal to Molly using the same trick where another couple in the same restaurant had a mariachi band to support the proposal!  Lisa eventually arrives at the Rovers and recounts how Becky proposed with a ring in a glass of champagne at which point Carla just about stops Glenda repeating the same trick.  Lisa wants to visit California so perhaps Carla could propose there?  It will be Carla's sixth wedding - she married Peter twice.

Alya is finally looking for a job.  However the application goes nowhere.  Dee Dee misses Laila rolling over for the first time as reported by James.  So Dee Dee comes over all motherly and decides she has to go part time.  She tells Adam the solution is to employ Alya as a legal assistant as she needs a job and they need another pair of hands, even if Adam is sleeping with her.

The fallout from the attack on Noah continues.  Danielle is convinced that Theo is responsible for the attack and bans Theo from seeing the children; plus Lisa Swain invites Theo down to the station to answer a few questions about the attack under full caution.  Noah did not see his attacker.  Theo claims he was at home all evening with Todd who confirms the alibi.  Gary does not admit he did it - but the way he is talking it looks like that he was in fact responsible, but later both Todd and Theo wonder what sort of monster they have released in Gary.

Ronnie thinks Debbie joining a dementia choir might be a good idea.  And is it likely that Debbie will consider it a good idea?  An inevitable row follows which gets worse when Ronnie shows little interest in wedding rings - which he was not planning to wear after the wedding.  Eventually there is compromise on both sides.

And in news which I did not want to hear Carl tells Abi he does not want "this" to end.  Worse - nor does Abi as she wants it to go on forever.  These two are just so wrong.  Please end this story next week.

Just to note that the last gig Roy attended was the Spinners in 1978 (possibly 14 October - Manchester Free Trade Hall £1).  Farewell concert in 2021.

Written by Chris Fewtrell and Simon Crowther.  Directed by Richard Lynn.
