Corrie Comicals week ending 27 December 2019

After the roof came off the first time (Adam being norty) the factory was re-opened looking much the same.  Credit to the powers that be - first Number 3 is given a modern revamp and now the factory has had a real makeover.  I cannot capture it all but this first sight was certainly eye-catching.  Well done.

Also in Underworld, underworld mastermind Gary Windass has just told Nick that he owns the factory site and is now their landlord.  However I really felt that there has been a Dirk shortage in recent months and so wearing a Christmas tree I present Dirk!

Jade has been found and brought back home to the delight of Hope and Ruby but inevitably Evelyn is far from convinced by Jade's inability to find work and housing.  Will Evelyn suss it out?

First dose of extra rations this week was Tuesday when Jonathan Harvey found he had to write an episode consisting of Rita sprawled on the floor - but he accepted the challenge and we knew she would be found as we have been promised more of this story through to February.  Secondary star of the episode was "Arthur" who seemed totally unmoved by the emotion around him.

"Fairytale of New York" appeared about the same time on BBC1 with Nessa singing the Shane MacGowan part and Rob Brydon singing the Kirsty MacColl part ("Gavin and Stacey").  If anything Robert Preston (above) looked rougher than Shane MacGowan on a bad day having once again (not) slept in the van.  It is 19 years since we lost Kirsty and she left such a thumping memory.  I wonder if Amy will recall Robert was her father figure for many years?

The episode ends with a "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" but somehow knowing the Street I very much doubt that all their troubles will be out of sight.

I am sure everyone  has already noted Liz's new hairdo - but she also became our favourite Christmas decoration wearing this seasonal outfit.  First prize to the member of the wardrobe team that identified this ensemble for Liz.

As she ended the episode in a coma with possible brain damage let us remind ourselves of Shona Platt joshing with David implying that he had left her alone in her hospital bed; it soon becomes clear that she is pulling his leg as he has only been for a toilet visit and had been by her side all night.  I wonder how many months before Shona magically recovers from her illness - as Nicola did on Emmerdale when her arm almost magically came right after two and a half years!  Perhaps the bump hidden by the hospital over the bed table might explain matters?

To be honest there was not a lot of lighter items on Friday evening (my review should be along later) but finally it seems the team have remembered that Carla cannot drink; Ryan poured a couple of whiskies and Ali challenged Carla drinking hers - which she then pushes across to Michelle to drink.  So Robert and Michelle have gone and to be honest Shona is not going to be saying a lot in the near future; indeed she has not been seen much recently anyway.

I had hoped for some fun and lightheartedness over the Christmas period but it was missing this year and I hope that this time next year some cheerful and heartwarming stories will be told as well these were this week.

Corrie Comicals week ending 11 January 2018

Woefully under-represented in recent weeks Kirk often has some wonderful bon mots and here he is telling Gina how they should prepare for a stake out - but she is only waiting for Duncan to materialise for his visit to see Imran so she that can break into his poky flat.

Great scenes between these two on Monday evening.  Liz has returned from hospital and almost immediately gave Johnny a flea in his ear.  Jenny does not want Johnny being nailed for a hit and run on Liz (although I thought Liz had nailed him some months ago) and would like Liz to drop the charges; after all Jenny knows it was not Johnny and before long Liz knows it was Jenny who did the deed.  Liz retires from the fray and Jenny waits to see if Liz is alright this time - hence Liz dying of irony above!

On first watching this little line passed me by.  Sarah-Lou and Gary are homeless and Gail has welcomed them back to David's house.  Bethany is not impressed and decides to flat share (after all she has two jobs now) and it turns out that Maria is willing to welcome her - although Bethany does not have a great view of her new landlord!

A note of accuracy on Monday evening as well.  Duncan dialled 00506 - which is the code for Costa Rica.  Later in the week it was confirmed there is no formal extradition agreement between the UK and the Republic of Costa Rica which enables potential fugitives to go into hiding in that country.

A quick interchange between Audrey who was almost run down by a mad BMW driver whom she accuses of being one of them there "millienials".  Rita is unsure what they are but asks Audrey if it is like "snowflakes".  In fact the mad driver is one Claudia Colby so although she might be getting on she is far from being a million years old (that is the meaning of millenial isn't it?).

One of the stranger lines from Wednesday as Gail seeks to convince David that she really is not a spy!  I don't think he ever believed it!  After all just because she has all the terms down pat and knows a firelighter from a lamplighter!

Moira has returned and we find she is addicted to Cola Chews - which the new Kabin recruit Brian is passing to Rita who is stunned to find the bottle is way down.  Apparently Brian also rather likes cola chews and has been helping himself.

Carla nails it - and she has not even discovered that he stole the money from Audrey.  And we know Nick's lying because no-one in the UK can walk into a bank and pay in £30,000.  The bank have to ask everyone paying in over £10k (and often less) in cash to provide a full and detailed explanation of the source or they will refuse it as the proceeds of money laundering in some form.  So when and how did Nick turn to the Dark Side and will we ever be told?  And who is the mystery woman?  Should Leanne be worried?

Which wraps the sunnier side of the Street for last week.

I have to go into hospital again this week over night for an operation on my right hand.  I very much doubt I will be able to work keyboard and mouse following the treatment so probably will not be here for the next two weeks.  I will return as soon as I can.

Writers: Jan McVerry & Carmel Morgan (Monday); Jonathan Harvey (Wednesday): Ian Kershaw & Cameron McAllister (Friday)
Directors: Alan Grint (Monday); Brett Fallis (Wednesday & Friday)

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 28 December 7.30pm

Greetings Corrie fans, it's Kelly here. Well Christmas is done, we survived Ken’s bell-ringing and Mary’s singing and now it’s back to the first of Friday’s reviews.

Liz is in hospital, with Moira, Eileen and a keen policeman keeping a devoted vigil at her bedside. She’s had an op and is out of the woods with just a bit of bruising and some enlarged lips.  As I don’t think collagen jabs are available on the NHS yet I’m going to be kind and put this down to swelling from the accident. As soon as she’s conscious Moira and Eileen waste no time in letting the policeman know all about her affair with Johnny plus the news of him being a violent ‘wife-beater’. Meanwhile the man in question is being questioned at the police station set where he is using his MS as an excuse and saying he had a dizzy spell when he hit Liz.

Back at the street Audrey and Lewis are having a loved-up chat about Michael Caine films when Gail interrupts them with a suggestion that ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ might be the most apt of Mr Caine’s oeuvre. After getting short shrift from her mother she decides she needs to be a bit cleverer and spy on Lewis.

Peter has practically bought the snooker hall. Which is no doubt an excuse for him to start wearing his incredible collection of terrible waistcoats again. He muses about its history to Kirk, saying it is pretty grotty, but it’s got something about it. ‘Asbestos?’ says Kirk. Dev, meanwhile, sees this as a chance to wind Mr Barlow up and he and Kirk try to convince him of the existence of the phantom Black Ball Butcher who haunts the snooker hall. When Peter remains unconvinced Dev and Kirk (who is stuffing his face with monkey nuts) sneak into the darkened snooker hall to play a few tricks.

Over at the prison Gina has been dragged in to visit,  seemingly for no other reason than to face the wrath of Sally and the stern looks of Sophie.  Sally slaps her and calls her a liar and Sophie tells her she’s dead to them. I’m slightly wondering what has happened to Sophie’s Christianity at the moment? I know these are trying times, but I was kinda led to believe that forgiveness was pretty central to the whole belief structure.

Back at the Rovers Gail has gone through Lewis’s pockets and found his diary which contains the cryptic entry ‘D-Day’ and ‘Madagascar’. She decides to follow him and finds him drinking champagne at a posh hotel with a middle-aged woman, before accompanying her to one of the rooms. Obviously this looks suspicious, but I can’t help thinking the cad is going to be found innocent. Given the earlier chat with Audrey about films he’s probably planning a private screening of ‘The Longest Day’ followed by ‘Madagascar 3 – Europe’s Most Wanted’.  What could be more romantic?

Surely all will be revealed at 8.30....

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 26th of Dec 7.30 pm

Welcome to Wednesday's edition of the Coronation Street Blog.

Good old Christmas Day, eh?. A time to settle with the family, watch TV movies and indulge in copious amounts of booze and turkey- joyous festivities!. Unless of course, you live on Coronation Street. Far from a peaceful day; Jenny got drunk and ran over Liz, Mary murdered Morrissey (hilariously) on the karaoke, and Tim finally realised his sister-in-law Gina is a bunny boiler!.

As Boxing day begins, Jenny appears to be missing and a frantic Johnny is looking for his wife.
Upon her return to the pub, Johnny admits to Jenny that he has sacked Liz, and wants to rebuild their marriage.

Over at her flat, Liz is unconscious on the floor after her collapse from the accident. Discovered by Eileen, the ambulance quickly arrives. Seeing Liz being carried into the ambulance, Jenny looks suitably mortified with guilt.

In a critical condition, the hospital informs Eileen that Liz's injuries are consistent with a hit and run.

The Metcalfe family are reunited at HMP Norcross, with Sophie and Tim decided on a campaign to release Sally on appeal. Gina arrives at Speed Daal and is given short shrift by Tim. Kirk's conscience is pricked and he decides that Gina can stay with them until she finds somewhere else to live.
Meanwhile, Paula admits that the only way Sally can be freed is if Duncan admits his guilt in the fraud.

Speaking of fraud, Lewis is still sniffing around Audrey following her windfall.Returning from holiday, Gail remains suspicious of the charming cad. Archie's money has caused Audrey to reconsider her life though, and announcing an early retirement, she tells David that he's now effectively in charge of the salon.

Realising the trouble she may be in, Jenny leaves Emma in charge of the pub, but it may be too late. Johnny has noticed a bump on the car and a bottle of wine on the driver's seat. Confronting his wife, Jenny admits that she drunkenly ran over Liz on Rosamund Street.

With Tyrone working overtime at the garage, on Johnny's car no less, he hears news of the accident on the radio. It isn't long before the police arrive at The Rovers Return. Johnny decides to take the blame for Jenny, and is arrested!!.

As it's only half hour tonight, I shall be back blogging again next week. What did you think of Christmas on the cobbles?.
