Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 20 April 2024

Apologies for absence last Friday - I was off to Bari on Saturday and ran out of time.  Tonight in Weatherfield Nick looks continually perplexed as Leanne continues to spout extensive (and expensive) Institute gobbledegook concerning reality coding which explains why an anniversary party last night spent more than normal and some of the family will come back for another meal today.  To me it sounds a lot like the manifestation obsession/fad a few years ago which told the unwary that they could achieve their aims by visualising and magically it happens.  As Nick (and Toyah later) tries to point out - perhaps they just did their job as a Bistro to the best of their abilities and the family actually enjoyed it so much they wanted to do it all again!  The daughter of the family, Anwen, (Maya Irving Piper) sees Sam playing chess in the corner of the Bistro and they have a game (she opens with the Slav Defence - which is wrong because she was playing white and it is a plan used by Black) - the outcome is a draw, although she does suggest Sam could teach her some new moves.  She is a member of a chess club in Worsley and suggests that Sam joins the club.  Obviously she has not yet encountered Hope.  Sam meanwhile hears Leanne espousing reality coding and starts reading some of the Institute literature in the vain hope that it will help free Roy.  Toyah is not convinced by Sam's reading matter either.  Sam later says that the Institute is a load of round objects.  Leanne and Toyah argue over the subject as well.  Nick remains perplexed.

Daniel decides to reach out to his vast web of underworld contacts in the hope that they have a lead on the missing Lauren.  No - he phones Nicky (who luckily still has the same number and is now an outreach worker with those working in her former profession) and she brings Deanna along to a meeting with Daniel in the precinct (hardly keeping the low profile he promised Bethany).  Max and Bobby have been following Daniel as the former is convinced of Daniel's guilt and take the opportunity of filming his meeting to give DS Swain even more evidence on which to question Daniel given that he took some clothes to the charity shop which might be linked to Bobby's false story of an intruder in a furry parka.  DS Swain rocks up and accuses Daniel of seeing two known sex workers in front of Bethany and we are into another interview session at the police station.  He is later released but has to face the wrath of Bethany - so she chucks him out of Sarah's flat.

Dee Dee is worried as Nina reports that Roy will not leave his cell for a visit - he later tells Nina that he could not withstand the noise outside his cell.  She already knows about Bobby's new statement which could collapse the case against Roy.  She also admits she had a drink with Joel - Michael tries to warn her off.  It later becomes clear that Dee Dee is receiving phone calls and emails threatening her with death for being Roy's solicitor - which means that Joel helps calm her down and he misses his meeting with his daughter.  There is also an odd moment when the above appeared on Dee Dee's screen - to which I can only ask - is the gambling habit genetically linked?  Joel and Dee Dee report the harassment to the police.  Later in the Rovers Abi talks about parenting and Dee Dee offers to support when he sees his daughter.  Michael however cold shoulders Joel when invited to join them for a drink - but cannot get served as there are no bar staff visible.

Adam and Dee Dee are drowning under the workload caused by Alya's departure and the loss of at least one client.  Adam tries to apologise to Alya - but even though she has been sucked in by the flattery from her new employer (who are really only interested in the clients she can convince to move with her) she does think about changing her mind - but eventually decides that Fabians is the answer after Michael reports Adam's earlier assertion that Alya would return for more money.  Alya uses Michael as her witness when she tells Adam to his face that he can take his job and stuff it where the sun does not shine!  Meanwhile all scenes involving Alya are being shot only showing her face and little else - I wonder why?

Nicky visits Daniel in his flat and the police have seen her as well - she has heard nothing about Lauren - but she does say that Roy was never a client of hers.  Nicky explains about the abuse and predators that exist and the difficulties which girls like Lauren encounter.  And just as Nicky is about to go Bethany comes in the front door.  Nicky tells her why she is supporting Daniel and departs.  Daniel says that it is a two horse race between him and Roy - and so he is no longer certain about Roy.

Come on everyone - free Cropper now.  Even Tony Blair knew about Deirdre - what is Rishi doing about this huge miscarriage of justice? Obviously not attempting any vote winning public comments.

Which just about wraps it up for me this week.  Be careful out there - even your best friends and neighbours can be convinced that you have killed an employee.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 15 April 2022

Rather than "What's it all about Alfie?" as Millicent Martin (and later Cher, Cilla and of course Dionne Warwick - whom I rather hope might include it in her set in June when I see her) asked in the 1966 film tonight was rather more "It's all about Alfie" as the small infant became the focus of an intense custody residence battle.  Having strained every sinew to believe that Toyah would accept Imran back into the flat, let alone her bed we then see the social worker (Chloe Pearson played by Lucy Avison) re-appear.

Now the last time we saw the social worker she had not had "gullible" branded across her forehead - but she was listening to Imran and R'Toyota tear lumps out of each other and you might think that the social workers were trained not to be taken in either by

Imran's smug looking "winning" smile (which he only seems to deploy when needing to achieve something unwelcome) together with the outpourings from Toyah who, let us remind ourselves, is a trained counsellor and can therefore be expected to pour oil on troubled waters and to pat everything smoothly into place so that all the fuss simply disappears.

In this household there was a debate.  I take the view that Toyah is only doing this to find a way of scuppering Imran's dinghy of hope with a tsumani and ensuring that he can never get his hands on the child whilst the good lady wife takes the view that Toyah would never do anything to hurt Abi (the sisterhood at work) despite all that has happened - just blaming Imran for his mistake and wanting revenge on him.

Miss Gullible is an amazing social worker - not only does she believe the tripe she is offered is edible she also has a judge on speed dahl dial on Good Friday and arranges that as soon as Alfie can leave hospital he can return to the loving care of the family which has so far abandoned Elsie and R'Kelly - you never know third time lucky.  My belief that Toyah is looking for a way out grew when even she was surprised that things were moving so quickly.

More surprised than Toyah was Abi who was with Alfie when the fateful call came and she immediately exploded returning to the Street for a shouting showdown with Ms Battersby and her future husband (oh yes she said they were getting married when interviewed by Miss Gullible).  Kev and Roy intervene and the latter walks her back to her flat near the Weatherfield Precinct to stop her doing anything stupid.  Roy subsequently talks Abi down and hopefully redirects her with the power of positive thinking - and after all she is Alfie's mother so her rights are significant.

Elsewhere Kelly, Gary and Maria attend Rick Neelan's funeral which is enlivened by a former customer (Dave Burman played by Andy Salthouse) of the late Mr Neelan turning up to spit on his coffin (grave spitting is so last year).  Gary lands a solid punch in the middle of the church and the miscreant departs in his van - which has his name and address painted on the rear door.  Meanwhile in what will no doubt make life difficult for Councillor (the other sort) Windass, a member of the local press hid behind a huge camera and took pictures of those attending the funeral of a "known criminal".  Once Rick is in his third grave Kelly and Gary say their farewells.  No doubt given that Mrs Neelan admitted to being the killer and that there is no more evidence it looks like the story of Gary and Rick has finally reached a conclusion and that Gary has got away with the factory collapse and Rick's death.  Later R'Kelly goes after Mr Burman and apologises for her father, for Gary and well just about everything.

The factory gets a look in - the buyer, Mr Geronimo (played by Steven E Harris), whom Kirk sweet talked into an order turns up and after a cardboard box building contest (with Kirk winning) he does offer to discuss a deal with Carla!  Beth demands that in consequence Kirk should be given a promotion and Carla concedes a meaningless new title which to my mind does not sound half so grand as "head of packing".

Amy gets Summer out of the flat and into Roy's for a piece of cake - but she takes her books with her and Roy plies them with bacon barms as he has a new bacon supplier (I still wish for Nina's Noodles) which they take back to the flat.  Summer gets rid of Amy and then visits the smallest room in the flat to relieve her stomach of its contents.  Amy however comes back for her phone (which is odd for a teenager - do they ever put them down?) and Summer admits her need to stay slim.  However in friend mode Amy later denies to Billy that Summer is doing anything wrong.  Difficult choice there for Amy - stand by your friend or bring down the powers which might help her?

Meanwhile Daisy's green eyes are flashing again given the need for Nicky and Daniel to spend time together to plan the school trip to Edinburgh (we got a day trip to an oil refinery when I were a lad).  Jenny uses her knowledge to suggest that in place of having a cat fight in the Street (shame) Daisy could quiz Nicky about her intentions.  Whilst not revealing the history of their connection Nicky admits that yes she could fancy Daniel but she would never split him and Daisy up because she is not that sort of woman and she is not a home/family wrecker - and she would not want Daniel if he was prepared to cheat on Daisy.  This is such an alien thought for Daisy's brain that she struggles with the concept for a while but will probably accept that such women exist (at least in fiction). Oh - never let Daniel borrow your car.  He always puts windscreen washer in the brake fluid.  At least Abi gets her job back at the garage as they are still short handed.

Adam is a sore loser as we know and it appears that in a recent case the other side used a real dirt digger (paralegal Ben Chancellor) to win a case unfairly.  The agent of evil then gave Adam his card for future business - but Imran talks Adam into throwing the card away.  However in the ongoing residence battle Imran decides that Abi is back "using" and he wants proof so that Abi's "missile cruiser" status in relation to Alfie can undergo a mysterious explosion in the ammunition store and later roll over in a storm and sink; so he rescues the business card and makes contact with Mr Chancellor.  Abi's solicitor is Elliott Newell (a return for Toby Gaffney) who is looking for revenge on Imran - if anyone can remember why let me know please.

Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 18 September 2020

Hi again.  I was here last week but a holiday beckons and the wonderful @MsKelstar will be here for the next two weeks whilst I try not to get lockdowned in the Lake District.  I shall be relieved not to be reporting on Oliver as the story is a little close to home and I hope that there are not too many other parents who are sharing similar pains.  As last week tonight was a full hour all in one go.

After Leanne misleading Doctor Schmitz (from Germany) earlier in the week concerted pressure from Tracy led to Leanne backing down and amending her earlier delineation of Oliver's ailments to a more realistic version with Steve giving non-verbal nudges to get her to reluctantly tell the truth.  Even so the German doctor (above) confirmed that Oliver might be capable of being helped.  I do realise that this story has been properly researched and that the response from Leanne is entirely human but the corrected information which she provided would already have been sent by the UK medical team.  For the moment however there remains a possibility of treatment in Germany but with significant costs and no doubt anguished attempts by all concerned to raise the sum needed.  Alongside this Nick is facing his own dilemma over Natasha and his new found son which he has conveniently told Sarah all about!  (And with another Nicky in the show I cannot call him Nicky Tilsley any more).

Abi finds the necessary gumption to tell Kev (we'll come to Kev in a minute) about her morphine swig and subsequent almost reversion to her bad old ways.  She will get to meetings and she will get his support - he is standing by her and feels it should be him and not Peter and not his sister Debbie.  Abi has a few drinks - possibly one too many - she tells Debbie (a wonderful pleasure to see her back with us) about how she used to encourage others to fall of the wagon and she needs to find meetings further away where she does not know people and she also recalls Seb screaming at her and the twins playing with wraps - all of which Kevin hears (above).  Naturally he is shocked and later on he discusses with Debs if he has made the right decision - he needs to think about Jack.  But we saw her in those days and she is nothing like that.  With help it will be OK.

At Tumbledown Towers aka the Platt residence David is getting to know the new Shona who is planning to move in and keeps offering David sex which he keeps turning down, alongside a suggestion that a hot tub be used to fill in the hole in the garden!  And there is something else going on.  Shona (who is almost back to beanpole thin) is constantly hungry (above), consuming about 5 meals a minute day saying her sleep patterns are disturbed and she was up early.  Anyone suggest any reasons for her being hungry given that I assume the last time she actually engaged in sexual activities was before Christmas?  David has no idea how he is going to pay for the sinkhole to be fixed - at the very least as he could hear water running that ought to have been sorted.  Insurance tends not to cover it but insurers would be keen to get the cause fixed if it might damage the house later.

Beth is convinced Daniel is on a date and sends Kirk to introduce himself to the very obviously physically distanced couple (above) who are sharing a drink and chat in the park.  They tell Kirk it is not a date.  They are just friends.  However Kirk pointed Nicky (not Tilsley) out to Craig and the latter is convinced he knows her from somewhere - he just cannot remember where at the moment and heads off on a run to maintain his new svelte figure.  Daniel advises Kirk that Beth needs to find a new investigator who is more Poirot than Sesame Street.  When asked if there are benefits Nicky makes it clear to Kirk that she always charges by the hour!  Whilst Nicky is not paid for her time in the park she refuses to be paid to spend time with Daniel and heads off to one of her regular appointments.  Ladies of the night have to earn their keep during the day as well.

Things are pretty difficult between Paul and Billy.  The latter tells Paul about the time he thumped Peter Barlow and tries to explain why he asked about Kel with Billy saying that he did not believe Paul had done it but wanted him to say it.  However the nightmares have returned for Paul (above) with the events of his earlier life causing him troubles.  The two are reconciled over a brew (although Paul apologises my view is that Billy was at fault for asking in the first place), but I wonder if further ructions may be around the corner.  [And a personal observation I think the whole Kel storyline was originally planned to be much longer but we have been spared by the virus and most of the story has been lost.]

Which just leaves Kev who appeared (above) to have a black right eye.  Unless it was a trick of the light or poor makeup.  Either way he did not look great and I hope there is nothing amiss.  Emma went on a sponsored silence and various other money raising possibilities to provide some light relief and her contribution to Ollie's fund.  I fear that it did not all work that well.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Weds 22nd July 7.30 pm

To begin with, I thought that Daniel's behaviour with sex worker Nicky was sordid and salacious. As it transpires, he's still mourning for Sinead (me too pal, me too!) which is why he doesn't want more (ahem) bang for his money. Sniffing Sinead’s clothes whilst being held by Nicky, is so heartbreakingly sad and kudos to Corrie for diving deeper into the male grief process. I do wonder though if he’s going to come off worse (and not just financially) Saying that, I do like Nicky. Does she have future street resident potential, perhaps?

As an ex-radio DJ myself, I could forgive Geoff for filling dead air time with complete untruths,  but his brazen attempt to curry favour with the courts whilst live on air is classic Geoff behaviour and another dirty tricks campaign!. His latest fastidious falsities may hoodwink some but I doubt he will fool all of the cobbles residents for much longer. With Yasmeen's unexpected visitor revealing some more home truths ( I thought she was going to be Tim's Mum) Elaine seems to have finally convinced her of Geoff's behaviour and battle lines are drawn for the court showdown. Can Yasmeen finally be released or will Geoff's lies win the day?

Emma’s existential angst epiphany at her aunty Tina's unfortunate spice girls related demise is a light touch to the recent heavy cobbles drama (all the hallmarks of writer Jonathan Harvey)and I wonder if Emma is softening towards Seb what with his troubles with Abi and the twins? With Emma's mum living in Australia, maybe they could both visit together one day unless he gets back with Alina, that is? We haven't seen a love triangle for quite some time and a younger element could add an interesting angle? I can't imagine Abi’s pasta being up to much but I can see why he may have made himself scarce!

Gary and Adam's confrontation has been about 2 weeks in the making and comes as no surprise. Aside from Adam's dubious relationship with Laura (is he about to cheat on his new wife?), Gary’s closeness to her daughter does at least have some sort of guilty conscience to it. Although Adam’s spot-on conclusion is a tad unbelievable, is this the beginning of the end for gangster Gary? I very much doubt it. I love the fact that he's turned into a version of his old nemesis Phelan, though. Could he bump a few more cobbles residents off in the process? I'd start with Geoff if I was him!
