Natasha's return! Corrie blog interview with Rachel Leskovac

Can it seriously be 10 years since Natasha's incredibly camp departure from Corrie? Double-crossed by Nick, and Gail, she flounced across the cobbles unleashing venomous diatribe to all and sundry, before leaving the cobbles in a taxi. As a fan of the show, Natasha still stands out as great femme fatale and something the show continues to do well.
Fast forward a decade, and as a Corrie superfan, I’m not only overjoyed that she is returning to the show, but unbelievably, I got a chance to chat with actress Rachel Leskovac for this very blog!

Q - Welcome back to Coronation Street! How are you settling in?
A - It’s been interesting adjusting and following strict rules, it’s felt like the first day, every day. At the minute I’m filming about once a week but today it doesn’t feel like it, so that’s a good thing!

Q - What’s it like stepping back into a character after 10 years, and have you watched back any of the old episodes?
A -I did look back at a few of the old episodes as 10 years is a long time and my memory is not great. A fan had put up a load of old clips together on Instagram of my last few episodes, and I loved watching those old interactions with Gail and in the factory, I had a lot of fun doing it. When it comes to reengaging with Natasha, however, I don’t think it was that beneficial as her life has changed so much. The ‘powers that be’ wanted her to come back as a stronger and independent woman.

Q- What has Natasha been up to in the last 10 years, and what makes her tick these days?
- She’s still in the hairdressing business and runs a couple of salons and it's scripted that she’s looking to open a third, so she’s a good businesswoman. She’s good at her job and has thrown all of her efforts into that. initially, all we see of her is the fact that it’s just been her and her son. She’s not kept Nick a secret from him, he was just too young. However, he’s not at an age where he’s questioning who his Dad is and she’s trying to be open about it. We have a lot of blended families these days so it’s quite a common storyline. It wasn’t an intentional secret for Natasha though.

Q - Is Natasha coming back to get together with Nick?
- No. I was relieved when I got the call, I wondered if she was coming back to steal someone’s man because you see that quite often in character returns but luckily it’s a story that has a bit more depth than that.

Q - Were you shocked when you got a call to return to Corrie?
A -  I think so. Because of the exit, I always thought the door was left open to return and they contacted me a couple of times at least over the last few years, they checked my availability and interests but it never materialised for one reason or another. It’s nice to know that they have actively been trying to bring her back. When you join a soap unless you came with a family, you are on the periphery, which is fine but it does come with some uncertainty. To come back with Nick’s son is just brilliant.

Q - Why has she kept Sam (her son) a secret from Nick for all this time?
 - I’ve not been told the reasoning but I don’t think she’s purposely kept this a secret. She always knew she was going to tell her son who his Dad was when the time came, it was just a case of her telling Nick. I think given the fact that when she left, he had no intention of a relationship with her and still had feelings for Leanne, she was devastated about the abortion and the emotional attachment to him so didn’t want to deal with it. Fans on Twitter have speculated that she’s back to break up Nick and Leanne but that’s not the case at all!!

Q- How does Leanne feel then when she finds Natasha back on the scene?
A - Initially Leanne is very suspicious of Sam being Nick’s son and Natasha’s intentions but Natasha is now a parent as well, so she sympathises with Leanne and it becomes a Mother to Mother understanding. When Nick feels that the time is right, she wants him to be a full-time father to Sam, and for keeps, but the timing may be a bit difficult.

Welcome back, Natasha! I cant wait to see how this story develops.

Rachel also disclosed that she’s just done some filming with Helen Worth (aka Gail Platt), so we’ve also got that to look forward to!

Keep your eyes peeled on the Corrie blog as I also chatted Ben Price about how Nick will cope with Oliver’s illness and to Jack P Shepherd about David Platt’s 21 years on the street!

All to come this week.

Heartbreak Ahead for the McDonalds

There's a very sad story coming up within the next few weeks for Steve and Michelle when Coronation Street explores late miscarriage.  Michelle is going to lose her baby at 23 weeks.

ITV is working with Stillbirth and Neonatal death charity called Sands to make sure they're getting the storyline right.

Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle, said: “I thought long and hard before agreeing to take on the challenge of this storyline. It is obviously a cause very close to my heart having lost my beautiful Archie at 21 weeks and 5 days. I discussed it with my family and friends, all of who were very supportive.

“In the end I felt it was an important story to tell in order to raise awareness of something which affects thousands of women every year.

“I have had to go to some very dark places in my mind whilst filming these heartbreaking scenes but my family, friends and colleagues have been incredible. Losing a child is something that never leaves you so to revisit those feelings as Michelle has been challenging.

“Coronation Street ensured that I had a counsellor on set at all times to go to after filming the scenes but for me the best tonic after a hugely emotional day was to go home to my kids and be reminded of how lucky I am to have them.

“I am very proud of what we have done with this storyline and I hope it helps raise awareness and helps people to talk about their own experiences.”

Late miscarriage is not rare but it's also not overly common. At and after 24 weeks, it is considered a stillbirth, which is what Maria Connor experienced when she had to give birth to a baby that had already died. The story will start the week of January 9 and will have a devastating effect on both Michelle and Steve, who we viewers know is also the father of Leanne Battersby's baby. What this will mean for them remains to be seen.

I have to say I have great respect for Kym Marsh. Tackling this storyline would be tough for anyone but Kym lost a child herself at 21 weeks and 5 days a few years ago.  She has relived the most difficult time of her life while filming this storyline but believed it would help others. I know she'll pull out all the stops.

Spoiler Alert! Leanne's going to have a surprise pregnancy

Wow, I like this sound of this one. From the Radio Times, via the Sun (but I don't have that link), there's a new spoiler revealing that Leanne Battersby is going to get pregnant this summer after a one night stand...with Steve McDonald!

We know that Steve is soon going to find out about Michelle's almost-tryst with Will and things will be rocky in that marriage for a while. He's going to have a one night stand with Leanne and she's going to discover she's pregnant, horrifying Steve. I imagine she'll find out just as he and Michelle are working things out.

We know Leanne has had a miscarriage in the past and doesn't think she's able to get pregnant but in soap world, one night stands with the wrong person usually end up with a little plus sign on the pregnancy kit stick. Steve will want her to terminate but given her history, I doubt she will. I do hope she isn't going to lose this baby.

I'd really like to see Leanne have her own child as long as it doesn't send Simon into another fit of rage. I'd prefer to see Simon become really protective of the little one and be a really good big brother. It might do Amy a lot of good, too, to be a big sister.

I know this kind of storyline is about as cliche as soap cliches get but they do work with the right characters. Steve and Leanne have known each other for nearly 20 years and each have come a long way since they were tearaway teens. In a perfect world, I could see them together as a couple but I doubt the powers that be are going to break up Steve and Michelle (Stell? Stichelle? Steanne?). Maybe we could even have Michelle pregnant as well! Liz would have a coniption fit! She likely will anyway, giving Steve holy hell just like she recently tore a strip or two off Michelle.

What about you? Are you still on Team Steve and Michelle or would Team Steve and Leanne make you want to dance at Steve's seventh wedding?

More Corrie spoilers about Jenny and Phelan's 2016 returns

It's that time of year when we start looking forward to what's around the corner in soap land for the coming year.

In this week's edition of Inside Soap magazine, which went on sale on Christmas Eve, they bring us some teasers for what's on in Weatherfield.

First up - Carla will be left fighting for her life. You can read all about that here.

Also teased by Inside Soap magazine is the return of both Pat Phelan and Jenny Bradley.

For Pat Phelan's return, Anna is going to be horrified to see him again, especially when he turns up to work with Kevin.  Kevin and Anna are going to snog under the mistletoe this New Year's Eve.  Will Anna tell Kevin about her night with Phelan?

And for Jenny Bradley's return, we're told that Jenny contacts Rita who tracks Jenny down and brings her back to Weatherfield.  Jenny seems eager to make amends with Rita, Kevin and Sophie after she kidnapped little Jack earlier this year.  But the question remains - is Jenny really on the mend after receiving counselling and therapy, or is there a more dangerous motive behind her sudden return?

See more spoilers for 2016 including information on the return of Jenny Bradley and Pat Phelan.
And what's the mystery that's going on at Underworld?

Coronation Street Christmas spoilers 2015

In today's rather wonderful double issue of Inside Soap magazine, there's a whole host of soap spoilers.  So if you don't want to know what's going to happen this winter in Weatherfield, look away now.

But if you would like to know what's planned for Christmas on Coronation Street, here we go!

With Nick about to pop the question to Carla next week on Corrie there's only one thing for Carla to do (after she says 'yes' of course).  She asks Roy to give her away at the church and walk her down the aisle.  I love the sound of this, although I'd personally like to see Carla with someone tall, dark and handsome (like Robert) rather than a short, fair mums-boy like Nick.

At the Underworld Christmas party, Eva cosies up to Aidan Connor.

Simon refuses to go to counselling.

Tyrone asks Fiz to marry him.  But Tyrone ends up deep in debt after he tries to bring Lapland to Weatherfield for little Hope.

Tracy is convinced that Robert is going to propose to her (for the second time). But she's also got the hots for ex-love Rob Donovan who turns up next week in his prison cell.  Will it be Rob or Robert?

Kylie and David are set for a showdown over Callum this Christmas, so there'll be no peace and joy in the Platt household.

Meanwhile at Sally's house, she ends up cooking Christmas dinner for herself and Tim, Sophie and Faye, Anna and Kevin.  Can Sally keep herself from interfering as Anna and Kevin get on like a house on fire?

Even more spoilers for Christmas on Corrie!

Spoilers: Corrie filming out on location this week

Coronation Street have been out filming on location this week and we've found some excellent pictures online.

The Sunday Mirror today have paparazzi pics showing Tracy and Carla on the edge of a cliff. The Mirror reports that Tracy, played by Kate Ford, wore a safety harness for the scenes at a quarry near Glossop, Derbys

In the pics, Carla's drinking - is she desperate enough to be considering suicide and what's Tracy doing there? Is she helping her or pushing her over the edge?

Alison King, who plays Carla, will be taking a break from the show in 2016 but says she definitely wants to come back. Read all about that here. They wouldn't kill Carla off, would they?

Have a look at all the pics here.

Also out on location this week was newcomer Ted Robbins with Patti Clare, who plays Mary. The Manchester Evening News have the paparazzi pictures showing Ted as a ghost hunter with Mary, filming at Wythenshawe Hall, in Wythenshawe Park, which was transformed into ‘Butterthorn Hall’ for the shoot.

The MEN report that snippets of dialogue overheard during filming reveal Ted’s character is investigating suspected paranormal activity at the supposedly haunted house.

Spoilers! Corrie producer reveals live episode details

Stuart Blackburn, Corrie producer, said that the Platts and Callum will be at the heart of the live episode.  He has promised it will be full of drama, comedy and tears.

Stuart said: "It's going to back to basics and much more about the storytelling. We have got a fantastic cast and I've got complete faith in each and every one of them. We're using a huge number and it's going to be a huge challenge."

"At the heart of all of this is going to be about the Platts and the ongoing feud between them and Callum. Whoever thought David Platt would be one of the good guys? This is going to be full of shocks and turns and twists and will really make everything that has come before look like a prologue. Decisions are going to be made that starts with Sarah stupidly thinking she can take on Callum. From that point on, all decisions made will have ripple effects for years to come and that's not just hyperbole - it will happen."

The live episode will also feature a "key moment" for Roy and Cathy after Roy becomes uneasy when Yasmeen suggests he and Cathy are more than just friends.

Stuart said: "It's been a really tough one for us to do, because the memory of Hayley is still so fresh, and yes we want Roy to be happy. Whether it happens or not is up for grabs. Again, it's about decisions. Cathy takes the decision to surprise Roy to give him a really good day, which actually then puts their relationship under huge pressure."

And Sally and Tim's wedding will feature in the live episode, which sounds great. But Sally's recent kiss with  Kevin is discovered, well, it is soap after all.

Stuart said: "The significance is that this live episode is the week before their wedding. When did a soap wedding ever, ever go to plan?"

Finally, Lloyd and Andrea will leave the street together, but not before Lloyd's "bromance" with Steve gets a fitting send-off.

Coronation Street's live episode will air on Wednesday, September 23.
