Coronation Street Episode Review, Wednesday 30th August, 8 pm

Welcome to another Wednesday Weatherfield round-up and to catch up on the latest goings on, on Coronation Street.

Last night, I booted up my premium ITVX (it’s advert-free, kids) and whizzed through Monday night's 44-minute offering with a somewhat lacklustre attitude. Work is hectic and I was rather tired so maybe it was that. I tuned in, and other than the Stephen Reid shenanigans and Rita namedropping the Winkleman, I was surprisingly non-plussed - although the writing was top-drawer, as always. We do have a few story strands going at the minute, so maybe it was me? Anyway, tonight pretty much picked up where Mondays left off. Billy and Paul seem much happier after Monday's ‘dirty dancing’ lake swim, and having dried off, they remembered Summer’s birthday (I’d forgotten to be honest). They both apologise for not getting the student a new laptop. Paul tells Bernie all about it and she decides to join him on a visit to see his MND pal Shelly. With money on his mind, Paul is surprised to learn how Shelly pays for her care package - with credit card fraud and selling (drumroll) laptops! Paul takes one home for Summer and doesn't tell the truth. Billy and Summer’s wedding vlog will look a lot better now! Later, Bernie visits Shelly and offers to help her shift the dodgy goods.

Meanwhile, having cottoned on to Uncle Stephen’s nefarious dealings, Sarah’s eyes are now widening to his behaviour in the Underworld factory. What with the nipper snapper’s buy-out progressing, the middle manager/niece is somewhat blindsided and wonders what to do about her Uncle. Stephen heads off to a meeting at the hotel and Sarah follows him. She collars him thinking he's up to something but then realises he’s meeting Jenny who’s about to sign off on the Rovers deal. I'm guessing Ronnie’s secret share deal may have something to do with this in future. With Ed also trying to sign off his latest project and needing the cash, Ronnie blindsides his brother with talk of a surveyor to bide some time. However, Ed has already hired someone. Debbie Webster is a delight as always, and I would love to see her behind the bar of the Rovers… just me? With the sale (of the pub) complete, Ed has less luck and the land deal is delayed, but it looks like Ronnie may be cutting in fine if he wants to turn those shares into cash. Meanwhile, Jenny is down at having sold the Rovers, and Stephen is there to pick her up with a classic soap snog.

Back at Underworld, Carla hands over some cash to Lou Donahue, who tells her all about police activity with her husband's suspicious death. Lou tells Carla about LSD microdosing and her own experiences, which pricks Carla’s conscience. Confiding in Roy (who's busy selling his new coffee range) Carla tells him that she may have been drugged and not had a breakdown. Sharing some doctor Google research with Roy, he’s apprehensive about her suspicions, and she’s adamant about what she’s discovered. Roy calls Peter and tells him he’s worried about Carla’s mental state. Peter tells Dr Gaddas who then visits their flat. Carla chastises Roy for interfering, but he gives her a tip about finding out whether she has LSD still in her system. Carla vengefully promises to follow it up.

Elsewhere, Stu and Eliza’s Dad come to a truce with Yasmeen offering her usual dash of wise words, yet Yasmeen and Roy aren't a couple! Deciding to return to Pakistan, Yasmeen shares a lovely scene with Eliza, a monologue of memories tinged with sadness - my favourite scene tonight. For tonight’s comedy, Mary being bemused by Cassie flirting with Dev was very funny! At least Tyrone seems to be bonding with his new Mum. It wasn't long before Cassie was drunk and it seems she is using alcohol instead of abusing drugs. I'm not sure we haven't seen this before with Abi, but hearing ‘Gin Rummy’ reminded me of playing the game with my Nannan in the late 90’s! It’s a random memory to conclude this review, and I'm immediately entrenched in nostalgia, forgetting my Monday night miserabledom. That's Corrie for you - isn't it?

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 28th of September 8 pm

It's my first episode review in over a fortnight, so I shall start with the apologies. I've started a new job, and with the Queen's passing, national mourning, and a Corrie schedule shuffle - I’ve been all over the shop - major Ryan busyness! (but not robbing a Bistro) Anyway, I've caught up with the latest Weatherfield dramatics, and I dive into this review feeling a strange sense of optimism about it all. Although the last few episodes contained warnings about mild violence, shootings, and murder, I've actually found them to be a welcoming and light relief!

Tonight’s show started with Stephen's Hollyoaks-style flashback of the murder, once again whilst hiding behind the factory bins! We true crime fans will tell you that the murderer always returns to the crime scene! Jenny is understandably worried about Leo's disappearance and Daisy wonders if Leo’s done a runner following that spat he had with his Dad. Daisy wants to raise this issue with Jenny, but Gemma tells her that Leo left his passport and luggage in The Rovers lounge - all whilst Stephen is in earshot and propping up the bar. Like I say -criminal and crime scene. Amazingly, the Canadian murderer manages to sneak into the pub, whilst Daisy and Jenny are out, stealing the evidence, without Gemma seeing him. Annie Walker would have turned in her grave at that appalling pop music coming out of the bar, but it worked as a distraction. Stephen Reid is Richard Hillman V.2, and I'm all for it.

Jenny takes the disappearing suitcase and passport as a definite confirmation of Leo’s departure to Canada and reacts in full Bradley fashion - chucking out both Micheal and Stephen, whilst seeking solace with Rita. Jenny then goes to the airport, but returns on her own. Later, Daisy tells her like it is, and to be fair, she is correct. Leo was a dull character, and unlike Kelly, he actually got quite a good send-off, I thought.

Meanwhile, Bernie’s doppelganger comedy subplot lends itself to Coronation Street's lighter side; and she continues to be my favourite new (ish) character. Tonight, she puts her fraudulent Fern plan into action, getting Paul to babysit whilst she pretends to be the posh (Patricia Farnham / Debbie Brownlow) lookalike. All dressed up and lying about a job interview, Bernie has a successful speed awareness course and meeting back up with Fern, she gets a cash payment.

Later, with *spoiler alert* news of James' departure from the street (no, me neither) it's time that we finally meet his long-lost sister Diana ‘'Dee-Dee’' Bailey tonight. I had no idea she was a solicitor, but nearly losing her laptop and mobile phone in her arrival cab suggests slight inadequacy and unprofessionalism; a perfect replacement for Imran in Adam's solicitors. I could have done without the boardroom shenanigans, but it was worth it for the Ben Dover gag - that did make me chuckle. With Dee-Dee litigating a payment out of the club for his severance, I think we can guess that James will soon depart for a fresh start with the cash and maybe some football teaching job, that little session with Lily was certainly a clue. Also, I guess Dee-Dee will move into N0.3 - it's probably not a tardis, unlike Eileen’s.

Kelly’s midnight flit also got revisited tonight, with her former comrade Stu, and a heartbroken Aadi, both picking up the pieces. My favourite scene tonight was Asha and Nina visiting Aadi in the hospital to try and cheer him up. Aadi now seems resigned to losing her - Maria’s advice seemed to add finality.

Meanwhile, with Yasmeen back from the trip, she reconciles with Stu and tells him that she will do anything to cement his innocence and reopen Speed Daal. With newbie solicitor Dee-Dee in the Rovers, Yasmeen collars her and asks if she can take on Stu's case pro-bono, which is evidence, if you still needed it, of her soon-to-be working with Adam!

This was enjoyable Corrie tonight, and it keeps me watching. I may be busy with my new job, but life always finds time for Coronation Street. Back next week!

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 8th of June 8 pm

Aadi’s academic altruism, and his gift of colour coded revision cards for Summer, didn't give him quite the results he was hoping for tonight, did it? Getting accused of cheating has left him all high and dry, and by the end of tonight, we learn that Summer was attempting to cheat. With Aadi facing suspension or exam failure, will Summer admit the truth and derail her Oxbridge dream, or let Aadi carry the can? Less Grange Hill and more Hollyoaks, I can't pretend to be too invested in this at all, but I also can't help but wonder if Summer will ever make it to Oxford?

Dev scorches Aadi for his cheating accusations, so he tells his Dad the truth about Summer’s duplicity. Meanwhile, Dev tells Todd that he thinks the truth lies with Summer. Todd tries to get the truth out but Summer lies again. Hardly a clever move from someone so intelligent...

ITV3 recently aired a Classic Corrie episode that saw Rovers landlady Natalie Barnes let barman Vinnie Sorrell sell his home brew over the Rovers bar. It was successful, and the punters lapped it up, raising cash for Gary Mallett after Judy’s untimely demise. Fast forward 22 years and tonight it's our current landlady Jenny who has the same problem. Yorkshire Leo, (yes, I'd forgotten about him as well) wants to sell his home brew to the paying public. The only problem is (unlike in classic corrie) Milk stout may well have been a hit for Ena, Minnie, and Martha in the 1960s snug, but in these craft beer hipster days, Jenny and Daisy’s modern-day tastebuds can't hack it.

Struggling to cancel the homebrew launch, Brian enjoys the sour stout, but Daisy has switched pumps, so it's not Leo’s ale after all. Tasting the homebrew, Leo fails to recognise that it's not his brew he’s tasting, then decides to not take his new job and brew his home brew instead! Jenny admits the truth eventually and the romance seems to be now sour, too. Meanwhile, Cathy seems somewhat dismayed at Brian's idea of a homebrew launch as a date night.

Last week’s climatic corrie car crash into the toppling scaffold has left Toyah struggling to hold everything together as revelations continue to reverberate around the street. Leanne is constant support as always, and tonight, she was in full throttle; lambasting all and sundry (Alya, Peter, Bernie, Adam) and defending her sister to the core. Toyah is nowhere to be seen, and Adam is questioning why Imran was changing his will. Peter makes a perfect soundboard to counterbalance any murderous claims about his ex and tries to get Leanne to see sense but to no avail. Zee overhears all accusations in Speed Daal and relays his suspicions to Alya. Later, Leanne takes stock, calms down, and tells Nick that even she has doubts about Toyah's innocence. Later, we learn Toyah is back at her flat, emotional turmoil clearly visible.

Meanwhile - George struggles to contain his pain at Frank’s presence, so Eileen visits Frank and asks him to apologise for his past playground taunts. Frank apologises to George and invites them out for a meal at the Bistro. Frank plays it cool in front of Eileen but out of her sight, he craftily teases George by humming an old school song taunt. George then decides to move out of Eileen’s.

Elsewhere tonight - Max gets cooking for his date, with Shauna and David playing the comedy embarrassing parent roles.

Coronation Street Episode Review; Wednesday 26th January 7.30 & 8.30 pm

This week, Wednesday night’s Coronation Street gave us the downfall of Bernie Winter’s recent kidnap cash scam (of sorts), and devil-child, Hope, suitably sold her down the river. I’ve enjoyed this storyline. I don't think I’m on my own in saying that Bernie wasn't a favourite (to start with) and now I think she has longevity, in the vain of Janice Battersby, perhaps? I've been watching classic corrie (for blog research, obviously), and you can see the similarities. Evelyn's involvement (in pushing this plot strand to a conclusion) was a nice touch and gave it added depth. Any added Evelyn involvement makes it top-level Corrie, of course. More of that, please. However, Bernie is now in real trouble with Dev, her blended family, and the Weatherfield keystone cops.

The best scene of tonight was the gathering outside Chez’s front door, and it was good to see Evelyn, Bernie, and Dev in serious confrontation, instead of the comedy corner shop stuff. The dawn/or dusk of natural lighting did give the scene a sense of dark foreboding and was a good direction. Tonight's plot also brought the 'Fiz always defending evil Hope' strand back into play. Will she finally see sense? Here’s hoping!

Also tonight, and still seething from Maria’s political pee take, Sally (sidelined by Tim’s post-op heart problem) decides to hang up her power suit and clipboard, in aid of her husband's recovery. Have we seen the last of our favourite Coronation Street Mayor? (Sorry, Alf) I hope not. I would not have thought of throwing Sally and Maria together, and although the acorn was the climate change story, I think Corrie has done well with this (unexpected) comedy tree. I hope we see more from them both soon. Talking of bolshy women, dashing Daniel seems to have been caught in Lydia’s net, whilst his ex Daisy struggles with her true feelings. Lydia is going to be a bunny-boiler, isn't she?

Elsewhere,(or, things that don't float my boat) Jenny inadvertently meets Leo’s Dad, Teddy, and the relationship progresses anyway, and Craig’s crutch investigation deepens.
