Corrie's Amber to star on London stage

Nikki Patel, who played Dev's daughter Amber Kalirai on Coronation Street has landed the lead role in a new play at London's Old Vic theatre, opposite comic actor Rob Brydon.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus report that Nikki will star in comedy play Future Conditional at the Old Vic. She plays Alia, a young Pakistani refugee who is the newest member of Britain’s Education Research Board with a radical solution for schools - to restore the nation’s place in the world education league. But she faces the challenge of convincing the system to take lessons from a schoolgirl.

Nikki, 25, of Holme Wood studied drama at Idle theatre school Stage 84 and started her acting career in Coronation Street ten years ago.

She said: “I am honoured to be cast in a production directed by Matthew Warchus. I hope that through this production we will raise the awareness of equality of education for women around the world.”

The play, which also stars actor and comedian Rob Brydon, tackles the conundrum of British schooling through a myriad of characters. It opens on September 1.

Nikki is also due to star in new TV drama The Five, airing on Sky Living later this year.

Amber leaves Coronation Street - again

Nikki Patel, who plays awesome / awful Amber on Coronation Street, has filmed her final scenes for the show.  Digital Spy report on a story in today's People (which I can't find online) that confirms Nikki's time is up on the cobbles.

But it's not the first time she's left and returned so this may not be the last either.

A Corrie source, who's always busy on a Sunday it seems, tells the People: "Nikki's part in the love triangle was a huge success, but the producers feel that the character has run her course. Nikki is a professional and she understands, although of course she is disappointed."

Amber will leave the Street after a series of rows with stepmum Sunita Alahan.

A Coronation Street spokesperson added: "Nikki will be leaving us at the end of her contract, but viewers may see Amber again."

Corrie's Amber - from awesome to awful

I used to love Amber Kalirai on Coronation Street. She was the cheeky kid who used to wind up dad Dev and I really enjoyed watching her on screen, she lit up every scene she was in.

But what's happened to her now? She's dreadful. She's never been the same since she went off to University in that London. She dropped out and flopped back up north to sponge off her dad, give stick to Sunita and now she's nicking Sophie from girlfriend Sian.

Come back, lovely Amber. We miss you.

Nikki Patel on playing Corrie's Amber

There's a long, lovely interview with Nikki Patel, who plays Amber in Coronation Street in The Mirror and it includes pics of Nikki all glammed up in pretty frocks. She says she loves playing Amber: "I don't like to plan ahead too much as I think that's tempting fate, but I'll stay in Coronation Street for as long as they'll have me really. They write great stuff for Amber and I'm really happy here."
