Time to bring back Dev's daughter, Amber

Sunny Jim and I were waxing lyrical t'other night about Amber, Dev's daughter. We were wondering what happened to her and why she was never mentioned or talked about any more.  And that got us thinking that it's about time Amber came back.

Amber was last seen on screen in March 2012, seven whopping years ago!

She's Dev's daughter, born through an affair that he had with one of his shop workers. She and Dev always had quite a stormy relationship and the last time we saw her, she was storming off the cobbles heading back to live in that London rather than stay with her dad.

But surely it's time for Amber to return to bring a little excitement into her dad's life? Maybe she could get together with Sophie again, who's single after solicitor Paula's done a bunk.

I liked Amber a lot. I thought she had spirit, she was spiky and not too easy to put into a stereotypical soap box. Or maybe that's exactly why she's never mentioned... who knows?

Corrie's Amber to star on London stage

Nikki Patel, who played Dev's daughter Amber Kalirai on Coronation Street has landed the lead role in a new play at London's Old Vic theatre, opposite comic actor Rob Brydon.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus report that Nikki will star in comedy play Future Conditional at the Old Vic. She plays Alia, a young Pakistani refugee who is the newest member of Britain’s Education Research Board with a radical solution for schools - to restore the nation’s place in the world education league. But she faces the challenge of convincing the system to take lessons from a schoolgirl.

Nikki, 25, of Holme Wood studied drama at Idle theatre school Stage 84 and started her acting career in Coronation Street ten years ago.

She said: “I am honoured to be cast in a production directed by Matthew Warchus. I hope that through this production we will raise the awareness of equality of education for women around the world.”

The play, which also stars actor and comedian Rob Brydon, tackles the conundrum of British schooling through a myriad of characters. It opens on September 1.

Nikki is also due to star in new TV drama The Five, airing on Sky Living later this year.

Dissing the Devster

I was maybe a little harsh when I blogged yesterday on the aftermath of the Karl Munro saga. Having thought about it, maybe Dev isn't so bad after all...

I mean the Devster has been a fixture of Coronation Street for fourteen years now so Jimmi Harkishin must be doing something right. I've never really been a massive fan of the character though I admit. I liked him with Sunita the first time around - she humanised him in the same kind of way that Alma brought out the best in Mike Baldwin. However, Dev and Sunita the second time was just one big boring mistake.

I also quite liked his partnership with Vikram back in the day. Mainly because I thought Vik was a good character. And when daughter Amber first appeared, she gave her dad a good run for his money and that was fun to watch.

On the negative side, we had that dreadful long running storyline where Dev got involved with both mother and daughter. Where on earth did the writing team get that one from? I still shudder at the thought of that big naked portrait of the Devster being unveiled. And while I'm shuddering there's always the Dev/Deirdre pairing haunting us all like a very unwanted party guest.

So I guess it's all swings and roundabouts with Dev. The Mad Maya saga was preposterous but good fun, however that was mainly down to the magnificently bonkers Maya. I keep hoping they'll bring her back to finish the job.

My main issue with Dev is that he just doesn't really fit into Weatherfield life. Sure he's got the kids and a local business, but I just don't think he suits the Corner Shop anymore. I agree with David that a middle aged woman should be running that place, making it more of a neighbourhood hub once again. He also does not come across as the kind of character to be living in the middle of that terrace either. I thought it was weird when the Alahan's bought that house, and I still can't fathom it.

So am I harsh about Dev? Is he a character worth nurturing for the years to come?

Off to the wasteland?

Friday’s double-bill saw the Alahan clan coming to the fore and the (second) departure of Amber Kalirai.

Now, I know Amber wasn’t the most popular character on the Street but I liked her and I’m going to miss her. Sure, her return was only ever going to be a plot device to split up Sophie and Sian (something that could have been done minus poor Amber getting involved) but I’ve enjoyed her return (along with her added attitude) and I’m sad to see her axed for the second time.

I think one of the reasons why she has gone is because she was never given a chance to do anything bar argue with Sunita and kiss Sophie a couple of times. Amber was cool and savvy and I think that they could have axed several characters before her (Sean and Kirk anyone?) and more importantly they could have at least given her a decent exit. It all seemed very rushed and sloppy (as did the sudden martial problems between Dev and Sunita but that's another story) and not at all realistic at least not as a permanent exit.
So what should have been done differently? Well, I would have liked for her to have integrated more with some of the other younger characters, David and Tina for example. I never really liked the pairing of Amber and deadwood Tommy Duckworth last year but at least it was something. Since then all Amber ever seemed to do was have to endure Sunita being a total cow to her or moan about Sophie and Sian. I never understood was why they paired Amber with Sophie in the first place since they were never shown to be great friends during Amber’s original stint. It felt very forced and I think Amber could have benefited from having her own storylines instead of just facilitating others.

And now we have her exit leading to the affair between Karl and Sunita. I know she wasn’t the strongest character on the show but Amber deserved better and hopefully if she does return in the future she does so as her own character because even now she’s gone she is being used as a plot device to lead to the affair.

I hate to do posts like this where I moan about something, but I felt the need to have a little grumble over Amber’s departure and how she has been wasted over the last twelve months.

Amber leaves Coronation Street - again

Nikki Patel, who plays awesome / awful Amber on Coronation Street, has filmed her final scenes for the show.  Digital Spy report on a story in today's People (which I can't find online) that confirms Nikki's time is up on the cobbles.

But it's not the first time she's left and returned so this may not be the last either.

A Corrie source, who's always busy on a Sunday it seems, tells the People: "Nikki's part in the love triangle was a huge success, but the producers feel that the character has run her course. Nikki is a professional and she understands, although of course she is disappointed."

Amber will leave the Street after a series of rows with stepmum Sunita Alahan.

A Coronation Street spokesperson added: "Nikki will be leaving us at the end of her contract, but viewers may see Amber again."

Amber Waves

Am I the only one who thinks Amber's been getting a rough deal of late?  It seems that she's getting blamed and criticised for events that really aren't her fault, and in the process becoming something of a pariah.

Take Sophie & Sian.  Somehow it became Amber's fault that Sophie fell for her.  A single kiss - a kiss delivered to rescue Sophie from an unwanted suitor, remember, not a romantic one - and Amber became the target of Sophie's desires.  She did nothing to encourage it, there was no affair or furtive hand holding, and when Sophie came clean Amber immediately said she wasn't interested.  After that, she was simply being a good friend, rightly questioning how Sophie could declare her love for Amber one minute and Sian the next.

The kiss at the hen do was a bit extreme, but again, she was right; Sophie needed to realise that she wasn't ready for marriage to Sian.  Yet Amber's the one who's getting screamed at in the Street and given the cold shoulder.

Similarly, Amber seems to be getting the blame from Sunita for her new car.  It was her 21st birthday and Dev surprised her - why is she getting any heat at all?  Sunita, of course, just plain dislikes Amber, which is another problem for me - whatever the circumstances of her birth, she's Dev's daughter, and Sunita needs to stop being jealous of how he treats her.

I love Amber.  She is more brittle since she returned, admittedly, but I love her sarcasm and her willingness to prick Dev's pomposity.  She's also just a fun character - while Sophie is full of angst and pain, it's nice to have a girl who just wants to go out on the lash, have a couple of snogs and enjoy herself.

Corrie's Amber - from awesome to awful

I used to love Amber Kalirai on Coronation Street. She was the cheeky kid who used to wind up dad Dev and I really enjoyed watching her on screen, she lit up every scene she was in.

But what's happened to her now? She's dreadful. She's never been the same since she went off to University in that London. She dropped out and flopped back up north to sponge off her dad, give stick to Sunita and now she's nicking Sophie from girlfriend Sian.

Come back, lovely Amber. We miss you.

Pic: Sophie kisses Amber

Oh dear. In scenes to be shown on Friday next week, Sophie and Amber lock lips while Sian's away on holiday.

The preview for next week's Coronation Street says that on a girls' night out in town, Amber spikes Sophie's drinks, determined to spice up the evening. When a lad then tries to chat Sophie up, Amber kisses her, pretending she's Sophie's girlfriend.

Hmmm...it's nasty of Amber to spike Sophie's drinks, though. Really not cool.

Sophie and Amber to get together in Corrie

The Sun reports today (so take with usual pinch of tabloid spoiler salt) that Sophie and Sian will split up later this year when Sophie and Amber get together.

Suddenly, Amber's bisexual, according to the Sun, decides she fancies Sophie and the pair of them share a Christmas kiss. Sian finds out and she's devestated and this leads up to her leaving Weatherfield as actress Sacha Parkinson departs the Street.

Why do Corrie's Amber and Sunita dislike each other?

Maybe I'm just forgetful, but I was really confused in last week’s episodes of Coronation Street as to why Sunita didn't get along with her stepdaughter Amber. Hopefully I wasn't the only one. Corrie usually does a really good job of explaining past stories, but as they haven't yet; I thought I'd post this recap to explain.

According to the wonderful episode summaries on Corrie.net, Amber moved in with Dev and Sunita way back in 2005. Amber's mum was one of Dev's shop assistants and was taken ill so Sunita let Amber stay with them for a while. Dev wasn't happy about this and we soon discovered why. Amber was in fact, one of Dev's secret children, although she had no idea she was. Sunita obviously had no either her husband had another family either.

Soon afterwards, Sunita left to live with her parents. So it's likely that Sunita blames Amber for her and Dev's break up, even though it wasn't Amber's fault at all, it was all Dev's. This explains the resentment between the two I think.

Let me know if I've got this wrong or missed something, in the comments box below.

Four characters axed?

The People reports that four characters are set to face the axe, they are Sian Powers, Chris, Cheryl and Russ Gray. Sacha Parkinson recently signed a new contract which will keep her in the show until the end of 2011, so the exit, if true would happen in 2012.

Craig Charles will also be taking a break towards the end of this year to film new episodes of the brilliant comedy series, 'Red Dwarf' though he will return sometime next year. On the topic of returns, the same article also reveals that Dev Alahan's daughter, Amber Kalirai, who will apparently experiment a bit with Sophie Webster!

Overall these sound like good decisions, the Gray family have never really fit into the street. I kind of like Sian, so I'd be happy if that part of the article wasn't true, and the news of Amber returning is fantastic, lets hope she's just as cheeky when she arrives back!

Alahan? No!

What's happening to Dev?

I admit, he's always been a bit... well, hard to take.  Jimmi Harkishin's always made, let's say, interesting acting choices.  Dev is a riot of harumphs, eye rolling, and squeals, meaning you're never quite sure how he's going to react in any given situation.  He could explode with rage or do a whinnying horse impression; we just don't know.  Dev's provided some great comedy over the years, with his combative relationship with Steve, his womanising (this is the man who bedded both Dierdre and Tracy, never forget!) and, of course, a certain thirty foot high nude photo.

Some people hate him.  I've always found him strangely hilarious, perched on his stool in the corner shop, giggling at the people who come in.  He's also a genuine Alpha male, one of the few left on the Street after the death of Mike Baldwin and the Connor brothers.  Since Sunita's return, however, the character's lost a lot of his appeal.  He's ceased to be who he once was.

Part of this is down to the loss of Amber, who was always willing to prick his pomposity and superiority complex with her razor sharp tongue.  His exasperation as she casually ran rings around him was always a joy, and she's seriously missed on the Street.

We've also been asked to accept too many unlikely circumstances in too short a time.  Firstly, Dev's new found paternal instincts toward the twins, who haven't even been seen or even mentioned over the past five years.  Then he and Sunita reconciled, with her swiftly dumping a fiance and apparently choosing to ignore his many other unmentioned children, even though this was what drove them apart in the first place.  Finally, the two of them move out of Sunita's massive home in the suburbs to the tiny two-up, two-down that is number seven.

All of this was hard to swallow, and clearly there just to enable the return of Shobna Gulati.  I like Sunita, but I think these developments have damaged Dev, possibly beyond repair.  He's been weakened by being dragged into these plots, and he's lost a lot of his appeal along the way.  Dev no longer rules the roost: Sunita controls him completely, and it's strange to watch.  The women in Corrie have always been the dominant force, but some men need to retain their hairy chest and double whiskey attitudes: would Mike Baldwin have given up his penthouse flat in Weatherfield Quays as quickly as Dev sacrificed Victoria Court?

The situation's compounded with the current Aadi storyline, which again has nothing to do with the Alahans, and everything to do with writing out the Peacocks.  It's required Dev to be brutal and unpleasant to people he's lived alongside and trusted for years, and it's not working.  He's lost most of his humour.  Dev needs to be back to his strange, unusual, unique self before he's damaged goods.

What do you think?  Do you think Dev can be redeemed, or should he be under a tram come December?

Where's Amber?

It must be nearly a year since Amber went off to university in that London. When the character was axed we were told that she'd be back occasionally but never mind the Christmas and Easter breaks, we've had nearly the whole of the summer without her returning to Coronation Street to see her dad. I suppose she must have spent it all in Scandanavia with her mam or back in that London, though with Sunita & Dev back together you'd have thought she'd pop back if only to see her step sister and brother and touch her father up for some cash.

With Ryan Connor about to make a similar departure, can we conclude that the same fate awaits? At least with him out of the way the problem with the embarrassing fake Ryan storyline is more likley to fade from the collective memory.
