Coronation Street Episode Review Friday 24 May 2024

I have returned and I can report that the people running the railways in this country do an excellent job of getting people to their destinations on time.  Only one cancelled train and one significant delay over 7 days of intensive rail travel.  However no trains tonight in Weatherfield and we are in pre-BGT week as we build up to the big reveal of what really happened to Lauren.  Cassie continues to stir the pot by letting slip accidentally on purpose to Kev that Abi was in touch with the drug dealing Dean again and was going to meet him in the precinct.  Kev drags Abi off of Dean before she uses the wrench she is toting and Abi goes to report him to the police.  Later poor Abi finds out that there are another four "sex tapes" out on the internet and as Dean was assisting the police with their enquiries at the time he could not have posted them.  After careful study Abi spots that they are in fact deep fakes - her face but the body has tattooes which are not hers!!  Kev summates 2 + 2 and the answer is Max - the lad with consummate IT skills - so Kev storms across to the Platt residence to confront him - but even Abi accepts that Max is probably not that screwed up, dragging Kev away before any harm is done.

Daniel mentions to Daisy that Bethany is feeling a little low and as he has unexpectedly been called into work with his suspension lifted so could Daisy check on her later.  Having summoned up her courage (and a vodka) Daisy takes a bottle of white wine around to the flat above the builder's yard where Bethany is less than appreciative of the visitation.  Daisy talks her way in and there is a lovely scene where the sworn enemies manage to put aside their differences to at least share a drink with Daisy talking about Justin and Bethany and her experiences with Nathan, different but both scared of the shadows as a result.  So when Daniel returns he can hardly believe his eyes as the two girls are both slightly drunk watching Mean Girls and is sent out for pizza and then told that his presence is not needed whilst they watch Barbie.

Joseph has invited some boys from Oakhill around for tea and Bernie and Gemma are in an absolute flap - she has bought fish fingers, chips and peas.  Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard) has suddenly reappeared and at Joseph's request booked a table at the Bistro as they will be dining there - Joseph knew it would be too much for Gemma, therefore asking Linda to arrange it. Linda loves rubbing it in and is paying for the Bistro Bash which we do not actually get to see.  I know Linda is only doing good things - but everyone interprets it the wrong way all the time which must be horrendous.  Linda is also looking for a Manchester pad implying we will be seeing more of her - can I suggest that she is ideal for the next Mrs McDonald?  Go on please.

Simon is decided that he is joining Peter and in showing Carla pictures of the yacht he forgets that one of the photos depicts Peter with his arms around a lady.  Carla eventually discovers from Ken that Daniel, Adam and Simon all know but have not told her.  Carla knew one of them would move on first - but was hoping it would not be Peter.  However mature reflection with Simon as she says farewell to him is that one should not retain emnity and spotting a passing Daisy - on the hunt for more alcohol - offers her her old job in the Rovers and Daisy accepts.

Sarah makes great play of her return to the Platts by seeking to extinguish all reference to Sarah Barlow and ensuring that all correspondence is with her old/new surname, whilst Carla is back to being Connor (was she Barlow I cannot remember?).  Much is made of Glenda and Hope setting up a Little Big Shotz Bank Holiday car wash fund raiser which will no doubt feature next week.

Doing some cleaning David finds blond hair dye under Max's bed which the latter says Lauren must have left there and he had forgotten about them.  However the explanation seems oddly weak and Max refuses to chuck them out.

Roscoe and Roy are getting on well - however even better news for Roy is that Dee Dee visits him and apprises him of the contact messages on Lauren's site and that they will prove that someone other than Roy was sending her messages.  Also positively Roy and Evelyn setup a book club - they read a Winifred Holtby book and then discuss it over the phone which amazingly Roy has in his cell.  Less re-assuring is the arrival of Griff Reynolds the activist who recruited Max to his evil empire through the autumn of 2022 in the same prison and potentially in an adjacent cell to Roy.  And it would appear that Griff has a weapon and believes that Roy killed Lauren - so it looks like he might wish to exact his own revenge.

And leading to a long discussion in this house - just who is the extra in the front of this shot?

Overall an interesting episode with Daisy back in the Rovers, a charity event at which something will happen(!), who is looking to make Abi's life difficult and Griff seeking revenge for Lauren's "death" - all this and more will be revealed next week with only five half hour episodes.

Coronation Street Episode Review Thursday 24 November 2022

Hope decides to take inspiration from P T Barnum - "Be cautious and be bold" - she wants people to sit up and take notice as she extracts a hammer from Tyrone's tool box.  And off she goes to school with Sam as they are allowed to be friends again.  Sam is less certain of her friends and later in the day when she arranges to read another chapter, she overhears their less than friendly comments.  She gets her hammer out and threatens to re-enact her father's misdeeds on Charlotte Hoyle (hammered to death if you need reminding).  Mr Graham, the Geography teacher, knew Charlotte and is so traumatised that he is retiring!

At the factory Sally promises that she will not read "The Book" but Beth has read it and passes it over to Sally because she really needs to read about Stape's shenanigans with a certain ditzy teenager (Rosie).  Sally cannot resist and on her return Carla soon guesses what Sally is reading and Beth is hiding.  Beth is on a final warning and has to apologise to Fiz.  And please bring back Rosie!

Summer is feeling "off" this morning as she rushes around the flat to get to work.  Jacob volunteers to undertake some of the work which Carla has left for Summer (does he know about admin?)  and leaves with a warning from Amy not to get into trouble with the boss.  Summer arrives before Carla but cannot find a file until Jacob explains where he has put it!  Carla is unimpressed and puts both Jacob and Summer on a warning (if they join a union they will find she has not followed the approved procedure).  Later, Summer attributes her feeling unwell to her diabetes and Carla sympathetically "unwarns" them both.  Is Jacob just a bit too soft these days for a former drug dealing fiend?

The news that Councillor Windass is going to turn the Community Centre into a help point for immigrants reaches Griff and Co so he and Spider stand outside the Centre with some hastily printed and inaccurate leaflets implying that the facility will be unavailable to regular users - untrue as this is an additional use as Maria explains - but of course leaflets are always true and the "Main Stream Media (MSM)" to which Griff refers only ever prints lies and misinformation.  Very Trumpian.  However Griff now believes that Spider is now 100% in tune with his plans - and "something" bigger is on the horizon.

Debbie has potential buyers visiting and leaves them in Leanne's capable hands.  Leanne very capably puts the buyer off,  telling her that the books are cooked, the place is often empty and it is rodent infested whilst Debbie might be a bit of a drinker!  Debbie soon finds out that Leanne has not been entirely honest!  Debbie consults the contract they all signed - which she reads out to Nick and Leanne - which can force them to sell to a new buyer offering above market value.

Brian is awarded the job of telling Mary that she is to benefit from the accumulated wisdom of an actress friend of Nigel Kipling, the director, who has agreed to stop by a rehearsal to give advice.  Initially Mary is reluctant but eventually agrees.  Nigel, Brian, Ken and Mary are discussing the actress about whom Nigel has been raving and as a familiar face enters behind them when Ken is saying that she is hugely talented and just wants to bring her vision to the team.  All of which Martha (a returning Stephanie Beacham) finds entirely welcoming.  Ken cannot believe it is Martha.  Mary and Brian soon guess that she and Ken know each other.  Martha gets Mary breathing as an actress and later they repair to the Rovers for a drink where Mary admits that Martha has been helpful.

Nigel asserts that Martha was one of the possible "DCI Jane Tennison" actresses but she denies it.  When asked, Ken confirms that they were just good friends, a long time ago.  At the bar a little later Martha challenges Ken's description of their relationship - he apologises but had not wanted to make her feel uncomfortable.  She calls his behaviour abominable!  He apologises and did not think she would be happy if he told the world he had broken her heart!  Martha says that he takes the biscuit for arrogance!  No broken heart - she was just disappointed.  Ken was a tiny insignificant episode, a mere footnote.  Methinks the lady doth protest too much, Ken retorts.  Martha turns on her heel and stomps out of the Rovers.  Nigel, Brian and Mary insist that Ken needs to grovel and get her back - working on the play.

Nick gets a phone call - Harvey would like to have another meeting with Sam tomorrow.

Reverting to the Hope storyline, the events with the hammer lead Mrs Crawshaw to soon have Fiz on speed dial (not dahl) and summoned to the school.  At least Ty jokes we do not have a reserved parking place unlike junior school.  The joking is ended when Mrs Crawshaw suspends Hope for a week.  Ty considers that the correct treatment for the miscreant (who made £75 selling the books he bought) is to take time off and get to prove that he is a good father - or as Hope reports to Sam over the walkie-talkie she has Tyrone twisted around her little finger and a week off school.

Coronation Street Episode Review;Wednesday 16th of November 8 pm

Daryan's physical injuries are much clearer tonight following Monday’s horrendous attack. Visiting Maria and Gary for help with his immigration application, he reads them his statement and is visibly emotional as his backstory is regaled for us viewers. hard-hitting. Meanwhile, the main attack suspect, Griff, is busy right-wing sabre-rattling, and the residents are aghast when the community centre's environmental meeting turns out to be a cover for his sinister agenda. As analogies go, it was well written, and as that sabre-rattling got louder, his speech, although eloquently delivered, sounded very familiar.

Roy’s impassioned rebuttal against Griff was my favourite scene tonight and for all the right reasons. With Max filming events, he did seem to see things a bit clearer but was quick to change sides again when PC Tinker turned up to arrest Griff for the racist assault. Assuming Alya’s involvement, Max was quick to point the finger at the speed daal boss, until Darius told him that it was he who raised suspicion with the police. He then visited Lauren, who denied that her Dad, nor Griff, would have had anything to do with it. Max vowed to sort it out.

Later, Maria and Toyah, decide to try and reclaim the community centre as a refugee help point. After his arrest, Griff is released and soon back on Coronation Street, telling Spider that Max gave him an alibi. Griff then threatens Spider, telling him to up his game if he wants to stay in the gang. Toyah tells Spider about the community centre plans, and his nervousness is clear to see. Meanwhile, Max heads over to Griff’s and posts the edited meeting footage online.

On a lighter note tonight, Bernie’s doppelganger comedy crime farce comes to a conclusion. Dee-dee offers legal advice, telling Bernie to plead guilty, and Howie pays her a visit pre-hearing. Suddenly acting suspicious, Gemma quickly notes that Fern’s ex knows precisely how much the jewellery heist was worth, and she calls upon her Mum’s heavyweight friend from the dog and gun. Making threats, Howie convinces Fern to meet him in a random car park, with the number 5 gang hiding in a van, and soon enough, the police are on the scene to arrest Fern. Later, Dee-dee tells Bernie that she’s in the clear.

Hope, Sam, Summer, and Max - the Corrie youth contingent have had storylines in abundance this year, so you could be forgiven for thinking we probably don't need any more kids of Coronation Street. Not so, as tonight, Stu’s granddaughter Eliza becomes the newest teen albeit a pre-teen resident when she moves in with her Grandfather and Yasmeen.

Elsewhere, Nick and Leanne make Debbie a derisory offer for the Bistro so Ronnie offers to make a few calls…
