Connor McIntyre, who plays Pat Phelan, gives a good interview to Inside Soap magazine this week.
When asked if Phelan would have killed Michael himself if he had been forced to, Connor says: "That's a good question! We've seen enough of him to know that he can spin on a sixpence but I don't think he's the bloodthirsty type. If he can do his dealings without any of that, all the best for him. He's more of an arch-manipulator."
He says that being talked of as the next Richard Hillman... "Those are big boots to fill. Hillman is the benchmark but in Pat they've created a fully rounded baddie we can relate to in some way."
And if there comes a point at which Phelan's crimes catch up with him, Connor says: "The guys upstairs decide that and the writing team are doing a fantastic job, so I have no anxieties. Put it this way - I'll be here for as long as there is work for Pat Phelan to do!"

Phelan won't get his come-uppance if the writers want him to stick around. He bounced back so quickly from being scammed by Vinnie that there wasn't even time to give two cheers. I have to take issue with Connor McIntyre who says that Pat is 'a fully-rounded baddie that we can relate to in some way ...' He doesn't appear to have an Achilles heel though, of course, the writers can easily stick one on. Without that Achilles heel, it's hard to relate to him. This is a personal thing but I wish the writers would give the character a proper sense of humour ie not sarcastic comments about Michael. Both he and Eileen are such dreary people that I don't find the storyline at all compelling or entertaining. Todd's situation will be much more interesting to watch.
I think I read somewhere they were going to delve into Phelan's past to unpick what's made him the way he is. But I agree with Humpty; it's Todd who is compelling to watch, especially given his conflict of conscience, wanting to be a better person for Billy's sake.
I agree with the Todd angle - he is more interesting to watch now - at least he isn't 1 dimensional, even if we don't ever find out what happened in that London. Please keep him this way.
Love to hate Pat Phelan! The writing has been great and the acting superb! Connor McIntyre makes this character very watchable. I always felt that Phelan was the type that would get someone else to do the dirty work, that he wouldn't cross the line to murder.
Anon @ 12:17 - we DID find out what happened in 'that London'. Tod told Billy when he was waiting to be seen at the hospital after accidentally sticking himself with an old needle when moving an old sofa. He was engaged to a guy who contracted HIV, whom he stood by, supported and became engaged to; then the guy dumped him for someone else. It completely crushed him. It was largely opening up with this confession that led to Billy taking him back. It's only been mentioned once, without a big song and dance about it, so if you happened to miss that episode, you wouldn't know about it.
You are right Cobblestone, I did forget about that episode. It does explain everything. I'm just glad that he is the way he is now. So much better to watch.
I think pat phelan is a wonderful character and I hope he sticks around for a while, we need good characters like phelan to cause some trouble
